I have jut opened up my carbs for drilling 3rd prg. hole, changing venturis and setting floatheight. I found a tech article that shows to set the float height to 5,5-6mm above the top of the carb body. But this tech article shows a metal float, and my new 48 IDA has a plastic one. Does the same float height apply to both type of floats ? As regarding to the quality of these new IDAīs........... There were 3,5mm difference in floatheight from one carb to the other, one of the banjo bolts were filled with machining debris and donīt even get me started on the quality of the venturi castings, which are now luckily changed to 34mm (picture shows both venturis)........ Post by: Rasser on January 03, 2009, 23:33:03 pm Is now a good time to start telling about when I first received the carbs, and i had to send one back because the progression holes didnīt line up as they should?
When one progression hole was visible in one of the "tubes", then I couldnīt even see the beginning of one in the other tube. It took me a while before I figured out that the entire throttle shaft wasnīt machined properly in a 90 degree angle to the "tube" - more like 85 degree or so. This resulted in this strange problem, luckily for me I found the fault before mounting the carbs. They would have been near impossible to tune with the progression holes that much out of sync! Quality control....??? obviously not!!! anyway - anyone know if the float setting is different with these plastic floats ? Title: Re: IDA float setting - metal/plastic float, same settings ??? Post by: WhiteTrash on January 05, 2009, 22:53:15 pm The float setting should be the same, all later and new floats are made from plastic or dense foam (cheaper to make then solder two brass halves together). The important part is the metal tab which shuts the fuel off.
You may find that the carb body is not a good casting and the fibre washer under the needle valve is to thick to get the right height. I had to use a very thin cooper washer otherwise the needle valve would have shut to early, starving the fuel. And yes the quality is shocking, every one of the new IDA's need totally stripping, checking and cleaning. Don't forget to put a little bit of grease in the throttle shaft bearings, they're as dry as a nun's c**t and will wear out and stick in no time. I have heard about a set of new 48īs where one bearing was missing in one of the carbs. Schocking! |
