The Cal-look Lounge

This is how my dragracing project started, a sorry looking Notch that I found in a town close by. The goal is to run it on SCC 2009.

While I was waiting for the chassi I collected some parts. Kept them in may old racer.

The engine is a 2332:a with JPM heads, big turbo a Garrett GT45, it will run on E85, Autronic SM2, MSD 7 and some more stuff. I think it will be quite competent and make the car move.

Finally the chassi arrived. Though the salty air on the ocean had done some damage. Had to start with some cleaning.

With the chassi finally home I could start with the body. Had to put one side on just to get the feel of it. Now all I have to do is to get there...

While I am running a turbo I can be good to cool the air before it gets into the engine. This is how it will look like

I will add a fan that will suck air through the IC and if it will be needed I can get air from the sidewindows.

The gas will get to the engine through two pipes and return in one throught the regulator

Now we are getting closer to realtime. No racecar will be complete without it´s aluminum. When I ordered the chassi I also ordered 100 Dzus.  A bit cheaper to by there then here. I have never worked with aluminum before and not much with steel either. I had some trial and error. But i think it came out alright.

The seat is at it´s position and so is the steering wheel  and so is the throttle, break and clutch pedals.

I don't think I've ever seen a twinscroll turbo manifold setup on a type 1 engine before. I normally see the exhaust ports matched with the firing order to minimize any turbulence/pressure drop. I think 1 and 4 then 3 and 2 would have to be paired to separate the pulses properly.

Looks neat though! I can't wait to see how that setup performs compared to an open turbo.

Damn that looks like it's going to be a hard ride  8)

I've a right side NOS rear fender, it is nos but rusty (price € 150,--), you have to sand-blasted it.
I live in Holland so maby it's to far away!!!

Got the opportunity to get a Mendeola MD4 tranny. It will require some modification of the chassi but hey it' s worth it  :)

I was thinking the same thing.
Nice wastegate arrangement though.

The rollcage is 44 mm chromolly.

Got the scatter ring welded so I now can hang the engine. Need to redo all pipes form the IC due to the longer tranny. This is the first time I have the turbo in its place. I think it´s going to work. Need to cover it with the wing.

Well I finally put it on the floor last night. Wanted to see how low it is and if I need to do some adjustments. I will have to do some small ones. I am also waiting for my glasfibre hood. Still a lot of work but I will run it this summer.

Re-did the front end last night. Added it when it was up in the air. Not quite straight. Realised that I have to raise the car a bit. The rear fenders are at 50 mm from the ground. Though it is okay by the rules it´s a little too low. I also need to do some removal of tin at the c-pillar so the tires get some clearance.

Yes sir you are correct  ;D Hopefully we will have 8 cars coming from Västerås, if we can get the cars together. Quite a few of them have had major breakdowns early in the season.

Aha.. the famous Västerår turbo mafia  :)  If I ever want to go fast is it ok that I ask you guys if you have room for one extra car?  :D

I hope you manage to get your car ready and that the rest of the guys manage to sort things out and be ready for SCC.

Really enjoyed my SCC. Next year I will be better prepared. Finished the car on Thursday night and we rolled Friday morning. The car didn´t run well at all. I have found the reason and will sort it and will have it mapped properly. Though the season is coming to an end I will at least be prepared for next year  :) . Realised that I did not take many pictures of it. But at least two in it´s  semifinished and finished state.

I found out why the car didn´t perform. It was leaking air like crazy. I did not have the time to check those basic things... A another day or so in the garage and it will be running better again. I´ve also added the side trims which made a big difference.

Was at PBZ and dynoed the car. We had some issues with the map. We had do redo it from scratch and then it worked perfectly. Though the way we setup the dyno it calculated the rpms in the engine from the wheels. This means that you can´t have a clutch that slips a bit under load. It shuts off. This happened at about 6 000 rpm when the power came. So we could only get around that in the dyno this time. Though it still made 430 on the wheels and about 490 nm of torque. Going straight up. Then a pushrod decided to become banan shaped. They are´nt strong enough. Got new ones ordered.

I borrowed a set from one of the cars in our garage, I also borrowed lashcaps. My new stuff came on friday afternoon.

Borrowed scales to weigh the car. It weighs 639 kg without the driver and 719 kg with me in it. 62% of the weight is over the backwheels. Very satisfied with the numbers  ;D

This is from the 19 th of September when I went to Kjula. It was a good day. Got 3 runs in and they were all in 10 sec and below with a 9.91@232 at best. I also managed a 1.35 60 but then my clutch went up in smoke. This was my second time at the track. I am making some improvements this winter and will take it to the dyno this winter. There are some cars from my hometown that will have to watch it  ;D. They have all run in the nines with Patte being fastest at 9.41

Well this is not an all metal notch. It´s a tube chassi. The rear fenders are metal. Front fenders are fibreglass. The hood is in very light fibreglass (can have more made if you need one.) Front apron is metal. The rest i metal though. It weighs in at 639 kg. This is before I´ve added the chute.

I have not done that much so far this winter. I´ve ordered a new engine case and flangecrank with the works. The old flywheel broke all the dowels straight the last run this summer. I´ve built doorsides and started to paint the chassi. What a difference some paint makes!

Same stroke, 84 with all T4 mains. All the case work has been done in the US.

I recieved my new engine case and flanged crank yesterday. It´s got T4 mains on all and Shawn Geers did the machining before it was shipped. Looks awesome. Now all I have to do is to get it ready. Hopefully this setup will last longer than three runs like the old crank setup did.

The engine is coming back together. I am going to the dynos May 1st so it is getting close. I still need to build the return oil setup for the turbo and break in the cam. The Raptor cam looks really nice, it is going to be real interesting how the engine will sound.

Ragtop your engine is looking realy good :) will be nice to see how much power it makes with the jpm cam :) funny it looks like its ground on a SC1 Scat cam blank!!, i will only use the SC1 blanks they are much better than the CWC brasilian blanks, much better material, are you using jpm springs? im going to buy his cam and springs to try myself, good luck with the tunning, just turn it up with plenty of fuel :)

Went to the dyno today. After some struggles with the lamba and also the boostcontroll we managed to pull 540 rwhp at 2 bars with 572 newtons of torque  ;D then the clutch did not want to play anymore, so there is a lot more to come from the engine. We were still leaning it. So I guess I have to start working on another clutch setup yet again.

haha that is true. Don´t know, a friend used his regular camera for this not a digital camcorder.

well, we went to Mantorp this weekend for BugRun, lots of rain and not working timing meant that we could only get the 60 time and the end time, no speeds. Ended up with a new personal best of 9.72  ;D tried the chute for the first times but then... EPIC FAIL a rod decided to find a new way through the case... will open the case or whats left of it to see how the crank and cam are doing. Now I need a new case again + more things. No fun.

Well there is still hope for SCC  :). Just got word that my new case and crank is at Shawn Geers. Now I need to order some more stuff to complete the engine. It will have bigger stroke and longer rods with stronger bolts than before. So hopefully the reason that the engine broke will be eliminated.

Well, it is almost August and I have not started with the new engine yet. I got word that the hardware will be sent today from California. Will continue with the work on getting my first engine running again, just to make sure that I will run at SCC. The best event of the year!

Friday was a good day when the package arrived. Started working yesterday. The race is on to get the engine running.

Oh congratulations to Patte with the black fastback who ran a new PB of 9.39 and Rulle who ran a 9.60 but did not believe us at first  ;D

Run for SCC update

The engine will come together tonight so we can measure the new pushrods and see if we need to make some shims for the cylinders to get the correct comp. Spent last night cleaning the rods and checking stretching at correct ft/lbs on the bolts. The crank is ready and so is the Raptor camshaft.

Hi guys!

Update is as follows, engine will go into the car tonight for breaking in the cam. Yesterday we were still building and changing things such as the exhaust needed to be widened now that the engine is about 10mm wider than before, also the pushrods were sorted yesterday plus a bunch of other things. I had to redo pretty much everything due to the engine failure and just having a week to sort most of them is quite stressful.

But we will be there, I think the rest of Turbo Town is ready to race

This is such good news Johan, I wish you luck with the break in and also the map and dyno session. See you at Gardermoen.

It has rained a little tonight and the air is fresh with a light breeze from north. The roads are drying up and today we will start rigging for the event. Track maestro Geir is really positive with regards to the track and the weather forecast is looking better and better. Fingers crossed for a lot of track time this weekend.

It´s alive! Had some issues with clearance on the cam and had to split the engine at 10 o´clock last night was back together at 2. Now we are running in the cam. Then change the springs and a testrun on the street. Load the bus and we are off tomorrow morning.

After a week of intensive wrenching we got to SCC. I had not driven the car one meter with the new clutch setup (dual disc). Suited up and got in the car for the first run, could not get the damn thing in gear... My first thought was that the cable was too tight, buy nope. Realised that we had to take out the engine and we would continue to do that another 7 or 8 times before we got it working. Turns out that the crank bolts were hitting the rivets on the disks, after we were almost done we were told that this was a common fact... thank you... Well at least it was working again.

Sunday morning, feeling really ready for driving. Rolls up to the starting line and through the water. Hits the linelock and steps on it. Feels really weird the car is twisting like crazy. Turns out I broke left axle, come on!! Afterwards I found out that I was the first one to break a Karpiola axle. Fortunately I had brought one of my old axles to Norway. Though it was no easy task to get the pieces of of the spool. Eventually it was done and we could put the new axle in.

Finally, race time. Was a bit eager so i did not stay long enough on the two step so the car bogged, ran a 10.60 with decent top speed but awful 60. Next run I decided to stay longer on the two step, but same reaction, bogged again. But better time 10.30 with yet againg decent speed on both 200 (181 km/h) and 402 (226) but the 60 at 1.56 I usually have no problems reaching 1.38 or less. Need to take a look at the clutch setup and fix the hydraulic one with clutch management. I still have on more race in september so I will have it setup for testing.

New year and it is only 4½ months to first test and tune (hard to believe with all the snow).

I have added a clutchmanagement for next season.

Got back from SCC last night from a weekend of meeting good friends checking out great cars  but the best of all running a 9.05 at 245.7 km/h With a 1.30 60 and 5.82 on the 1/8. I could not believe it!  Great fun. Unfortunately an oil leak at 3rd cylinder foot stopped me from driving on Sunday. Time to get ready for BR Classic

Pulled the engine to see where the leak was coming from. The pinnbolt top on cylinder three is the one that is lowered in to the block and the wall between the hole and the cylinder hole is very thin. The sealant i used there was to thin i guess. Put some other stuff there. It is now back to together and testdriven last night. I am ready for BR Classic.  ;D

It would be fun to drive at Das Drag Day but it is quite a long drive and the bus really likes it´s diesel. If I can get some sponsors for next year i might go.

Tierp arena, what can i say what a drag strip! Rolling in for the first run was epic. Though the first run resulted in blown gaskets pretty much on all places. I had changed exhaust and intake gaskets before BR Classic but after running them for the first time i did not re-torque them (to be honest did not think it was needed) well you learn new things every race. Best run was a 9.59 at 245.68 with missed 3rd gear and a slight bog start. The RLR Rev 6 clutch worked perfect though. I am not running clutch management as previous pictures show.

Unfortunately there were oil spills on the track and cleanup was not optimal. Semifinal run I had a slip of grip at about 200 m and decided not to continue the run at full speed an of course lost to Niklas in the green bug.

All in all a decent  day at the track. I will be at Kjula on the 17 - 18 of September for a final run of the season to try to catch that 8  ;D

Finally got to see my 9,05 run from SCC today, awesome  ;D

Working on the engine with some mods for next year. Hopefully it will produce some more power. Will need it to catch a certain green fast Norwegian bug

It has been a while since I posted anything here I just realised.

Well the season has not been good at all so far. The first race two cylinders decided to crack, still ran a 11.73 with no turbo pressure and on Tierp left axle broke in the bleach box. So no runs so far to be proud of.

Working on getting the new axles in place and go to SCC. Will try to defend the title but it will be hard considering how well Stian is running right now. He really deserves the success, super nice guy (and Thorleif) and super cool car  :) Also saw Skinne when they were at Kjula for TTS2, the car went straight and really fast considering it was not a full run and they still ran 8.60!

The last run at SCC I torched the right head which can be heard on the movie clip. We have started the work on it and also finished the 6 stud conversion

I have used original Mahles with powersleeves last season (first year with powersleeve). I wanted to make my own cylinders for quite some time but the material was always backlogged then finally they had it in stock. Now we can make them as thick as we want.

Since there are new rules in 2013 regarding the safety classification on the chassis. My chassi is now legal down to 8.50 which is very fast but my goal is the get there and beyond. I then need to upgrade to 25.4 this means funny car cage and some more bars in the floor. Here is the kit from RLR for the FC cage

To get the cage in I need access to the interior. So I took everything out for the first time since the car was built.

good to see the garage is warm enough to work in :)   I have a question,it may just be the angle of the picture but it doesnt look like you can get a pushrod tube in where you have welded the 6 stud mount under the head? is there room? I had a similar problem with my 94bore comp eliminators after they where 6 studded and chased a leak for a while before i found the tube touched the washer under the nut slightly on 1 side only and held the seal off a tiny amount.

I dont have the heads in front of me so cant visualise how mine looked, I will look next week when i am in the same place as they are

Richie, you are correct. We will take material off in an angle to make it as thin as possible still keeping the strength

Can you put some more weld to each side and build up the mounting surface to help spread the load over a greater area? are Johannes heads available 6 stud now? if so how did he change the head to allow this? do you think he does new for old exchange? ;D

Yes it's possible to add more material. Yes his new big heads are 6 stud. He left material there instead of cutting fins. Not sure he wants these worn heads hehe.

may I know what is your rear wheel size? back space? axle narrow? and tire size? Please. reason i am asking right my 9" wheels is tight to the body ( square back) and I plan to change to 10.5 inch. I got 5 inch narrow with ladder bar.

I have 9/28 tires, 5 inches shortened axles. Not sure on the backspace. I run Bogart wheels that I bought from RLR. I'll check on the backspace.

It started as a simple upgrade, ended up being an all out clean up. The 25:4 upgrade welding will occur this weekend then retagging. Off to media blasters and paint.

Put it back together and maybe do some secret twists that hopefully will make it go even faster.

It will be done for the first Turbo Town Shootout on the 24th of May. This year we will have new T-shirts

Great progress on the Chassis upgrade. I thought to comply with the new sfi standards that the chassis had to have two centre tubes, not a single centre tube (below shift rod)

After about 50 hours of work with the tubing and about 15 hours of welding the chassi is now done. Needs to be re tagged and hopefully it will happen this weekend.

Then I need to put some paint on it, the question is should I paint it the same colour as the car but shiny or silver like everyone else?

Looks good,but should there not be a bar on the outside between the funny car hoop and the main hoop running horizontally as you have on the inside? about the height of your nose?

Ah ok,typically a funny car cage net is smaller,just the front of the cage is covered but if you use a normal net it will cover it,dont know how you fit it with the funny car cage though? and just because there was not that bar in the kit doesnt mean it shouldnt be there,we know "mistakes happen" and parts get forgotten ;)

As I am changing EFI to MaxxECU this season I am also upgrading from 2 step to be able to retard the ignition. We took an old dizzy stripped it and made a lid. The design is copied from my friend Fredrik Nygrens dizzy who also helped build it. It has worked well on his 9.20 car.

It was a really strange season. I managed to get to 2 events. Bug Run Classic and a race at Kjula. At Tierp I realised that the left rear shock had gone south while on the track. The car was almost impossible to drive, still managed a 10.23 at 234 km/h. Borrowed a shock from a friend and went to Kjula for some racing. Right after launch shifting to second a cylinder went up in a million pieces. Hurting the head and the block. End of season...

Fortunately after taking everything apart it´s not too bad. It´s fixable, the crank, camshaft and turbo are fine. Have already started the work to fix it. Will manufacture new cylinders this offseason and do some other changes that I ran out of time to sort this year.

Hopefully a much better season next year.

I think what you guys manage to achieve in such a short season is nothing short of amazing. Good luck fixing up the motor and keep it off the street, actually forget that last part! ;D Mat (S)

No idea, but the adjuster nob does not work anymore

The shocks are bought from RLR.

Hello people, it´s been too long.

Last weekend I took the car to Kjula Dragway (awesome racetrack) This was my second race this season. The driver was not doing a good job until the last run on Sunday when he after some talk with his mechanic/friend got his stuff together and pulled a 9.05 run.

The new setup, sold the big bus. this is so much easier to handle

New transmission sorted! Lots of work to get it from IRS to Swing. Lets hope it delivers.

Did you use adaptor plates/blocks/flanges to hold the Swing axles into the IRS sides?
Do you have a diagram or quick pic (or is it a secret?  ;D).
I've always wondered if it could be done fairly simply with some machine work or if it required custom micron-level fabrication or expensive parts.

No special things. The spool is Rancho Conversion kit. But a regular swing spool will work as well. Sidecovers are for swingaxel and then the spool is shimmed for correct spacing so it does not move sideways.

Excellent,be good to hear it make some noise again 8) but before you start it put that oil filter in the bin and get something else, even a mann vw early golf/scirrocco replacement is better :o The quality of those Frams is awful now >:(

We are using wix 51515r which is direct swap,but for your deal i would be using something you can take apart and look inside regularly to see its all good

Fram changed owners I believe and quality went to shit, there are a couple of videos on youtube about it showing what they are like inside now :o

På en sådan maskin så är ju ett filter du kan ta isär, klart en fördel.
Kört System1 sedan 1985 och väldigt nöjd.
Liiite sugen på ett sådant filter som kompisen Jocke Dahlgren har i sin dragster. Dock en bit på dyra sidan, tycker jag.... en dag kanske. över 400 dollar.

How does that work?
Will the CO2 be used across the boost solenoid to keep the wastegate closed?

Yes, you put a target boost on the magnetic valves. The first ones let´s the CO2 pass from the bottle at for instance 3 bars and the second valves regulates it down to what pressure you want on the hat on the WG.

Not 100% correct ;)))
The first one tries to adjust the pressure in the top of the wastegate correct, the secon one release the pressure of te top of the wastegate.
As this is a closed loop Control with a pressure sensor both valves can regulate ;)

I'm thinking of going 1 3/4 inch on my engine (2789cc) but I've seen a few that look smaller diameter but they are also smaller engines.

It’s for launch control. As soon as the pedal passes the sensor the EFI will get a signal that this has happened and then will handle what will happen with clutchmanagement and retarded ignition and what boost to run.
