Title: Other vehicles you have or used to have... anything goes
Post by: Dave Rosique on January 15, 2009, 23:28:19 pm

The pic Sarge posted of his old Mini Truck got me thinking SOME of you might just be in to other stuff besides VW's.

There are no rules other than I'd like for this thread to be about cars/trucks/planes/boats/motorcycles or whatever that YOU currently own or used to own... anything goes (including VW ;)) The more pic's the better...

I'll start this off with something normal and work my way in to some of the "different" stuff  ;D

Here goes... 1982 To#¤ta 4X4, great vehicle to tow behind the Motorhome...

This spends most of it's time being lent out to my friends when their VW's are down ::)

I'll add another To#¤ta to the mix. ;D My daily driver is a 07 Tacoma access cab, 4cyl and I have a '56 Beetle of course.

I used to own an 86 GTI and a 88 ford f150.

What is it with To#¤ta's?! A lot of my VW friends have them as second (or first ::)) cars as well.

I´m a "die hard" VW enthusiast. After using my old ´61 as a daily, I switched to a 1984 Mexican bug "silver edition". After few years I purchased a Golf from German military surplus. One of few cars made on special order of Bundeswehr.

The pic was made during my trip from Hamburg when we stopped to visit Wolfsburg factory.

Good stuff guys!!

The Military golf is cool!

I see a trend as well Zach... I must admit I'm diggin' the FJ Cruiser :)

I'll stick to my current collection 'O junque for now...

Next one:
1950 Flxible Visicoach bus/motorhome conversion. Converted back in the late 60's, I bought it in the early 90's (Rayburn was there ;)). I use it every chance I get... it turns heads everywhere you go.

I actually picked up on the picture of your RV and the one behind one of your Burros on the thread with Jeff's Burro yesterday. I've got a bit of a think for those old RV's and RV's in general.

This is what i just bought and will take to SCC, not as old as yours and needs some TLC but its got a tail lift and the Bug fits in the back. A 1975 Bedford Plaxton Coach, a house with workshop on wheels  8) ;D

This is my old boss' (when i worked in the restoration garage) '73 Dodge Trafco Team Lotus RV.  The actual RV in which Mario Andretti and Ronni Peterson sat during their seasons together to have briefings and coffee, right up to the '78 Italian GP after which Peterson died and Andretti won the championship. Andretti wouldn't use it anymore after Peterson's death and Team Lotus sold it.
My old boss Jim is a member of the Lotus club and proper anorak, so i've seen all the documents and pictures. He owns it with two more friends and it's still here near Bournemouth, but looking a bit tatty again.

I'll play...but its nothing too exciting.   :P

Diesel Rabbit pickup.  Was my daily driver for two years.  It gets used as a truck.

Needed a second car to put a car seat in, and at the same time had to get rid of our '07 Mustang GT.  No luck selling it outright, and the dealer we got it from had a '03 SVT Focus so we traded.  I feel a little dorky driving it, but its a 6-speed, and is stiff and buzzy like an old GTI.  Hoping being a Ford I can drive it without having to worry at all.

I've had quite a few cars, but I'll limit this to my favorites.

1968 Camaro SS350. I love my bug and all, but this is proibably my favorite car of all time. I bought this car in May 1997. I drove it year round, in the snow for 9 years and in over 90k miles, it has never let me down. Since I bought a WRX a couple years ago, it doesn't see snow anymore, but I still drive it all the time.

2002 Subaru WRX. A couple years ago, I decided that it would be cool to get a car that got decent mileage, was good in the snow and could haul a lot of stuff around. this is what I came up with. It also runs high 13's in the 1/4mile and wil fly on the highway too, as seen below.

1989 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 After I got tired of of blowing transmissions in my bug at the dragstrip, I got into 5.0 mustangs. They are by far the best bang-for-the buck drag car. This one has run a best of 11.1 @ 129mph and I drive it to and from the track on pump gas every week.

I wish I had kept this one. It's a 1998 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS in Arcadian green. From what I understand they only made 200 of the Impreza RS coupe in this color. Subaru geeks call it a "Unicorn". I only had it for a couple months last year before a guy made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Oh well, at least I had it for a while.

Thanks for playing along... it's fun to see what you guys have / had sitting around.

Frank, that Bedford Plaxton Coach looks sweet! It's nice to haul your car without a trailer ;) Maybe you can post some interior photos sometime... and that Travco! If the walls could talk on that one!

Javabug... nice load on the old Caddy there! The Focus is a good hit... My son commutes in one and really likes it.
Now's a good time to tell you, I really like your '67. When I was a kid I had a paper route, and the route manager used to cruise around in a Java Green '67... I think I was around 12 or so... the car looked like new. I really liked VW's, even when I was that young.

Redwagon, How could anybody not like that Camaro?? Good choice on the WRX... the police will be out to see you tomorrow :o

Mr. Plummer, The Mustang and red truck are cool, but the old Nissan with the Alloys, now that's a throwback!

I'll toss another one of my fleet out there...
This one is my 1960 Ragtop Baja that I purchased off Craigslist last year DIRT cheap! It had no motor and had been sitting at least ten years, but it's fairly straight and rust free. I'm converting it to IRS, and building a very mild 78.4 X 94 engine.

I noticed it there too as I’d recently been looking at American RVs and bus conversions, shame they cost so much to ship, that and the fact that I haven’t got anywhere to put one.

This is what i just bought and will take to SCC, not as old as yours and needs some TLC but its got a tail lift and the Bug fits in the back. A 1975 Bedford Plaxton Coach, a house with workshop on wheels  8) ;D

That’s definitely a step up from your 2008 RV, should make the long haul races a much better prospect.

WOW, cool bit of memrobilia!  8)

Thanks Dave, I appreciate the compliments.  I really like that car as well, and am looking forward to making it nice.  Looks like it might be a long, gradual process though.

That Baja looks great, almost exactly what I've been dreaming of for a "daily" driver.  I think it would be killer to have one to drive year round out here in PA, snow and all.  Unfortunatly I think you'd really have to take it apart and do the body and pan in a tough coating and make sure its sealed up real good in certain areas, or it would only last a few seasons with the salt they use on the roads.

1968 Camaro SS350.

The Camaro looks great.  The gold pant/black stripe is a great combo, along with the Torque Thrusts.  I grew up digging muscle cars, and I'm working on finishing my dad's 70 SS 396 Nova.  Just took the nose apart for a clean/detail, but I'm a bit slow getting it back together.

I've always been into old cars in general and grew up with american cars.
Though most of my time nowadays is spent on VW's I couldn't imagine not having some vintage Detroit steel in my garage. I've had a few over the years, but will limit this to the two currently in my posession.
The '55 Plymouth Savoy is my summer cruiser. Nothing special to most people but it's the car I never forgot after seeing it for the first time when I was 18. Now it is in my garage and I just love it.
Then there's the '59 Chevy truck. Workhorse and time machine.. No other car I have ever owned has given as many smiles per gallon as this one. It just laughs at modern plastic cars  ;D

1965 Ford Half Ton.  I bought this after the Datsun was stolen to tow the sand rail.  Mike Martin (husband of Julie Martin who owned Deano's old '67) was the guy who built it... wish I had a pic of the black lacquer (spray can) dash Mike did 8) 8) 8).  Babe's Paint (Lazenby's firemist green / butternut) did the body in red lacquer... later re-done by Becker's in a more forgiving enamel.  When I bought it from Mike, it had a nicely built 390 with a C6 automatic.  I later upgraded to a 460 and then added the suspension from a wrecked 3/4 ton, disc brakes and power steering.  One morning I woke up to find it missing... never saw it again. :'(

Here's my 1st 4 vehicles...
The Yamaha RD350 that I traded for the 68 Bug
Note the "ULTRA RARE" Fuch hubcaps on that baby  ;D
Sold the Bug and bought the Datsun 510 the next day
Traded the 510 straight across for the 59 El Camino. It was my first attempt at a restoration. Wish I still had it :(

I think the Bug is the only one I don't miss!! What a P.O.S.!!

Then got married and bought my first new car, a 1985 To#¤ta van, lowered it and put some nice wheels on it and drove the wheels of off it while raising two beautiful girls! We called it the silver bullet!

I've got many more but need to dig them up... I think the wife's current car may be the only car that I haven't altered in some form or another  ;D

So after a full size GMC Van with lift kit and 33 inch tires (same paint scheme as the Voegtly's)
I downsized to the 80 El camino
Then built the '94 Impala from a ex highway patrol car(http://home.pacbell.net/dustinp/)
Then bought my second new car, a 2001 Chevy Blazer Extreme
Then started remodeling the house and needed a truck so bought the "I'm hung light a light switch but check out my 2001 GMC HD2500"

But wait, there's more...

Back in 1997 I picked up a 1966 Chevy Nova 2 dr Hardtop (non SS) with original paint that the previous owner had converted from a straight six, powerglide to a 383 stroker motor & Turbo 350 trans (13.59 @ 104mph, poor 60ft. time). After I "made it my own" and drove it for 10 years, I tore it down September '07 to repaint and it finally came back home in November '08. I have a TCI front IFS and 4 link rear suspension powdercoated and ready to bolt in when the funds and motivation become available  ;D

Good suuff Dustin!!

I had an RD350 years ago and lived to tell about it ;)
I'm diggin on the 510 and el-Camino.

The Nova is very cool. My first fast V-8 car was a '74 Vega...

Next, how about a Mercedes Unimog??
This one is a Swiss import and I'm in the process of licensing it for the streets here in Ca. :o

Here's some more from the fleet...

1968 VW Burro. I bought this car off the original owner/builder back in the early 90's... 1968cc, single Zenith, typeII rear torsion w/reduction boxes, original "Orange County Burros" club sticker on the hood... it's a little rough around the edges, but it's tons of fun and gets used ALOT!

1947 Chevrolet Fleetmaster... I tried to buy this car 20 years ago back when it was in much better condition, but it was not for sale... fast forward to 2006, my buddy calls me over to see the old Chevy he just bought... The PO passed away, the car changed hands a few times, my buddy ends up with it and then sells it to me. I'll hot rod it at some point AFTER my Oval is running, but the car is fun to drive around as-is.
Oh yeah, it has genuine A-1 exhaust on it (Split manifold and dual pipes by Manny) ;)

other cars I have owned or currently own?

1967 Convertible Bug Narrow Eye Baja burnt orange (no I didn't do the Baja Job to the car, so take it easy!), 1641 single port, stock carb, sold to my girlfriend in 1989, she sold it to Sheep..so on and so on. Hot boxed that car I don't know how many times.

1970 VW Bus (The Scab) blood-clot red, with white roof, 1679cc single port, stock carb, S&S Rally Muffler 4 tip. Drove it everywhere, got it stuck in sand 3 times in one night @ Pismo, seen UFO's in Taft with it, jumped it going into Long's parking lot next to Buggy House, leaving battery in the street.

1971 Westfalia (white). Bought this off a friend, had a 1776 with allthe wrong stuff in it when I bought it put the 1679 from Scab in it, but with 041 heads and Kadrons. Fast for a bus. Lots of storage inside for odds and ends and a very cool air horn that used to scare people something silly.

1981 Fiat X19 dark green: say what you will about owning a driving a Fiat, but I put 77,000 miles on it in one year, with only a few setbacks....  a blown radiator hose.... a flat tire resulting from the car rolling down across a highway and into a ditch (e brake was weak) from a 7-11 in Angel's Camp, and it would overhat the motor when you turned the wipers on, but that was only towards the very end. Nothing RAIN X and elbow grease couldn't fix.

1985 Wasserboxer Vanagon, silver/blue interior. One of my favorites, stock 1900cc did alright. When I first bought it, I put 10,000 miles on it in a month, traveling to South Calif, Death Valley, and back and forth between Bay Area and Quincy CA twice a week. All in a month. This poor car met its end in a fireball on First St in Livermore one Sunday. Very sad.

1990 Jetta silver. Biggest pile of crap ever driven. Everything you want to say bad about the Fiat really deserves to be directed at this piece of junk.

1999 Ford Ranger 2.5L white  Basic Pickup Truck. Ray Schubert used to laugh and say "that truck should have a bar code on the side it is so generic" As plain as it was, it was a fun car.

2002 Subaru WRX WR Blue, aside from my Bug, has to be my all time favorite car, hands down. Did everything very well, went like hell, stuck like glue, stopped on a dime, sounded good, comfortable and tough as nails. Lots of trips everywhere on pavement and otherwise. Nothing could stop that car, except me rear ending a To#¤ta Tundra with a tow ball. Killed the WRX. Stupid me.

Current cars...
2006 Subaru Legacy GT 2.5 Turbo, midnight blue. A real sleeper. Funny how many guys you can pick off either on a backroad or at stoplight dragstrip in this car. High 13sec 1/4 I think. Too quiet for me. but very comfortable and sticks like a leech. Probably never get rid of it. 95% as much fun as the WRX was.

2007 Honda Accord V6 EX (wife's car) graphite grey. it's an appliance really, with 240hp. Safe and reliable.

1984 Alfa GTV6 Maratona, orig silver, black leather interior. A project shared between my dad and I and eventually my son Lucas. I've always lusted after a GTV6 since I was 12 years old or so and we found a nice example a few weeks ago at an ok price. Car is clean and sound, with very few issues for a 25 yr old Italian car. Want to find some Ronal A1 wheels for it, which for the GTV6, are like BRMs for VW Bugs.

and my blue '67 Bug,

Cool!  Cant be a car guy without owning an Alfa at some point, right?  Someday I will have a GTV replica.

I echo what Low Oval posted about your car, Cornpanzer... WHAT A CAR! Don't ever sell that work of art. I've been wanting an early 911 since I was a kid. Should have bought one when they were cheap in the '80s & '90s. I'll always regret that. They're sky high, these days.

Finally scanned some of my old rides

My very first car. 1981 Olds Cutlass Cruiser. 305cui SBC. 6 seats and large boot. Bought it 4 days after passing my test, whilst my buddies were driving around in shitboxes or souped up hot hatches. I couldn't even park it outside the college in Berlin so had to leave it in the teachers car park, but no one ever said anything, cause they didn't think it was an apprentices car. Sadly got t-boned after 3 months by some twat in a GTi. If I had owned a bug then I don't think I’d be around anymore.

That's what the GTi looked like...

Then bought another one which needed some work and made one out of the two. A thing which would repeat itself to this day in my car life. ::)
1979 Olds Cutlass Cruiser 305cui SBC. Oh I had some fun in this thing...

I then part ext it for my 1972 Olds cutlass S 350cui. Got it as a project and put it on the road to smoke around. Eventually took it with me when I move to the UK and restored it whilst at the restoration garage. It got me into drag racing myself not just spectating anymore.
Pre restoration at the 3rd Mopar Nats at Santa Pod

Post Restoration now with 455cui Olds Big Block.... the tires never stood a chance ;D

Had to sell it when the garage went bust, sad day, otherwise I’d now be racing this as it was an evolving project.

The rest are not in order of ownership.
A couple of cars which non UK residents may not be familiar with and I had in between and as side “entertainment” apart from the string of Mk1 and Mk2 Golfs including GTi's and 16V’s and all sorts of Beetles including a '70 with targa roofs and suicide doors.

1964 Ford 105E Anglia 1500GT pre x-flow. Actually bought 3 and made this one which was still a rust bucket and got sold aside the hundreds of parts. Some I kept for a later project...

1973 Vauxhall Viva HC 1256cc. Again I had a blue '71 before which I drove to Berlin and back to Bournemouth once 1300miles round trip and a red '72 which was for spares with the gold one.

Also had a Viva HA Van Ex GPO which I wanted to put a 16V GSi engine and 5 speed Manta Box in, but broke it for parts eventually as I realised I haven't got the time.

1990 Alfa Romeo 164 3.0 V6 nice cruiser but when the ABS started to play up and not even the Alfa Dealer could help it got sold. No picture but most know what they look like

Bought this as an unfinished Body and chassis and basically build it with all the parts I had in my workshop including leftover paint from the Olds.
'27 T Roadster with 1500GT pre x-flow from the Anglia spares and 2000E 4 speed, 13" Viva front wheels (from the red spares car) and 14" Volvo rims with Good Year F-40 cross plies. What a bucket of fun in the wet...

My favorite out of all the other Bugs I had apart from the ’67 now.
1960 1600TP with 1500 box and the most solid RHD Bug I owned. Some of the bolt on bits like pop outs, fog lights etc came from a scrap ’59 which I got in part ex for a MK1 Golf GTi.

Then I made this out of the scrap ’59 in 6 months after seeing a couple of pictures of a basket case pick up someone made and thought I can build something like it but better. The whole floor and body was moved back 6” on the chassis/tunnel. Stock Type 3 1600TP with twin Solex under the bed. The rest again made from parts kicking around in the workshop and swapping around. The car is still regularly driven around the area by the guy who bought it of me. He also owns a trike with an actual Beetle body back end including roof. It’s not just me…

My ’69 Bay, again bought as a project, done up, used for a little while and sold. 1600TP full flow oil system and 2 litre box for cruising at 75mph all day.

And last two cars which where part owned and build by me and buddies.
’29 Ford Model A Sedan, Rodshop body (Dave Palmer of now Creative Engineering)
3.5l Rover V8 with Holley bucket, Box section chassis with Jaguar S-type rear and dropped I-beam in RHD on Cragars. Driven to Le Mans 2002

Then my mate hit a lamppost leaving a roundabout on a damp new years day cruise and bend the chassis, but the body was unharmed. Rebuild in 5 months on tweaked ’32 B rails now with narrowed Chevy 10 bolt rear in LHD on Torque Thrust II’s. Driven to Le Mans 2004

1967 Mercedes Benz 250SE. Car was beaten up but very solid so we used a totally rotten but low mileage ’71 280S which had been left as a donor for all the trim/chrome and interior and made one nice one. Again two into one. And spares got sold off on eBay for funds. Drove it all the way to Switzerland and around France. It got sold and paid for my ’67 now.

Ok, here we go with my non-VW-car-history... Starting with something scandinavian

1993 Saab 900 S LPT (low pressure turbo, for the Saab-newbies :-)). My first "real" daily driver, as I never had to have one, cos I either took my girlfriend's car or used public transport. Loved that Saab, low mileage, one-owner car, great condition, several trips to Italy, lots of memories... Still love it and wish I still had it... But I had to sell it, to buy THIS:

1963 Chevy Bel Air 4dr Sedan. Even if it only had an 230c.i. inline six with a 3-speed (three on the tree), it was a great cruiser... and it was my first american car. I really loved it, spent too much money on it, but it was worth it, cruised all around Switzerland, to Austria, Germany... Good times. Originally, I had planned to use it as a daily driver, but well... I felt bad using it in the rain, not even to think of the Winter, so I bought another "real" daily, a Golf Mk3 station, 2.0 litre, 200k kms on the odo. It was cheap, never broke down, but I hated it. I hated it so much, I don't even have a picture of it. The only pics I took of it was when I decided to sell it, to buy another Saab 900! My love for Saabs never came to an end, and I just had to have one again. So, when the opportunity came to buy a 1993 Saab 900 S LPT in red (not the same red, but the cars are almost identical), I HAD to have it. It's my current daily driver. And I think, it's a keeper.
And why did I to sell that '63 Bel Air? Just because I'd found my childhood's dream... an early 50s style leadsled:

1949 Chevy DeLuxe Sport Coupe. It's nosed, decked, the door handles were shaved, it's lowered in the rear, the roof was chopped 3 inches, it's got a hopped-up 235 inline six with Offenhauser dual intake, Fenton split exhaust manifold... 3 speed with a Nova rear end (really tall, great to drive on the highway). I imported it from San Diego in summer 2008, and I'm currently working on it to get it street legal in Switzerland. I love it. And it's a keeper, definitely.

... Ok, here we go with my non-VW-car-history ...

I haven't got photos to hand of most of mine, but here's the list!

1968 Beetle (still got - now looks like a US spec '67 and likely to be my O/FF race car)
1960 Beetle (written off after three months of ownership by some silly tart driving into the side of it)
1968 GP LDV Beach Buggy (bought for £300, spent another £300 on it including paint!
1971 Karmann Ghia (swapped for the bugy plus another £300! fixed up into a Grago-alike!)
(http://muchos.co.uk/members/neil hab2/Ghia Thunderball 2000.jpg)
1966 Beetle (bought to race, but was too good so fixed up and sold on)
1966 Beetle (Headstraight, my choptop race car - ran low 12's)
(http://muchos.co.uk/members/neil hab2/Headstraight - bigbang03.jpg)
1970 bay camper (2-litre type 4 motor, written off by brake failure and teminal rust!
1981 T25 camper (sold when I stopped racing)
1970 Beetle (quick fix up and cal look - wish I'd never sold it!)
(http://muchos.co.uk/members/neil hab2/jeff1.jpg)
1971 Beetle (1200 model - sold to a work colleague's son - nearly finished)
1951 split window Beetle (long term project!)
1970 Beetle (late model cal look project, just finished in December)
1972 Beetle floorpan (to go under '70 above, hence the K-plate!)
1974 Beetle (scrapped)
1993 Mk3 Golf Driver
1991 Passat estate
(http://muchos.co.uk/members/neil hab2/passat.jpg)
And part shares in several Mk2 Golfs, mostly GTis, although I've never driven one!

Wow my list's going to be pretty boring compared to some of these  :o

72 Beetle - wrong 'un with early panel but hey I was 17!
Citroen BX - Thankfully got written off by someone jumping some traffice lights.
Mk2 Vauuxhall Chavalier - Bought as a stop gap after the above. Engine blew up New Years Day, I had a Basil Fawlty moment and kicked it. Lots.
Mk2 Golf GTi - Real early one, loved this car but EVERYONE drove into it  :(
Company Rovers/MGF's/Mini's - Too many whilst I was selling them! Mainly had big arched Mini's as they were the most fun  ;D
Ford Mundano - Ewww company car
Alfa 164 Cloverleaf - Black with Tan leather, virtually mint condition. Black with Tan leather, full Alfa history. Awesome car with thenicest sounding V6 ever. Sold it for more than doublew what I stole paid for it.
58 KG Coupe - Wish I'd never sold this one. Pretty much zero rust, now sat left in bare metal in someones garage. I want it back  >:(
4 Mk4 Golf GTTDi 150's - Company hacks, great fun with superb mileage!
Audi TT Roadster - Yeah, many jokes about cutting peoples hair  :o
Audi S2 Avant - Made a fortune when I sold it, even though it needed a load spending on it when I bought it.
Audi 80 V6 Coupe - Biggest pile of shit ever. My one and only lemon car I've bought
New Shape Pissrat 2.0 TDi - What can I say, Das Drag Day and back on 1 tank of fuel  ;D
Mk3 Golf GTi - Bright met Blue, 50k on the clock, sold that one for a profit after 7 months of owning it.
Mk4 2.0 TDi Golf - Perfect daily driver these, I'd have another tomorrow!
3 X Alfa 159's - Great looking cars, nice and comfy but damn they're sloooow
Alfa GT Coupe 'Blackline' - Awesome car, 18000 miles in 5 months and it didn't miss a beat, nor did it go through tyres, and I drive hard  ;D

Some where in there fits a 195? Oval rolling shell I bought. Never collected it from where I bought it, turned it on for a small profit within a few weeks. And of course my 61 Beetle which I'll own forever. I nearly sold it once, and called the guy up when he was on his way telling him to go home. I'd rather put iot in the garage and leave it than sell it. My g/f will be sold into slavery before that goes...

Out of all of those, I wish I had the Alfa 164 and my KG back.

You guys are doing great! I've seen cars on this thread that I never knew existed! :)

Here is another one from the fleet...

My dirtbike... yeah, big deal a dirtbike... Hey, I said in the beginning anything goes! Riding helps keeps me somewhat sane  ::)  The bike is a 2002 Honda XR650R, hopped up a bit to 60 horsepower(est), and weighs only 275 lbs! This thing moves! These bikes are known as the King of Baja. I've made it street legal... the bike was originally sold in the states as off-road only, but with so many land closures for OHV's in California, plating it for the street is a good way to get around much of that. I've ridden bikes since I was a kid, and at 51 years young they still make me feel good... hope the knees hold up ;)

Anybody else ride?

~DR.

NOW, WE'RE TALKING! That's cool, Jim... I'll take that doghouse ANY day. In a perfect world, I'd have a sailboat... but I'd settle for a power one. Either way, I get to fish. Mmm, fish.

Campingsite near Bad Camberg in '99? Well it left some kind of an everlasting impression  ;D

Mark,
In college I used to sail on lake tahoe pretty much every weekend in the late spring and summer months.  I originally wanted a sail boat, but the wife can't handle the slow speeds of a sailboat.

Too many VWs to list, other than to mention 1950, 1951 (Okrasa powered), 1952 (my drag car), another 1952, 1953, 1954 (first dual-Webered car), 1955 blah, blah, blah – and two near-identical 411LE Automatics, both Gambia Red. Mk1 Scirocco with Janspeed turbo and Bilstein suspension (back in 1979 – cool car).

Non-VWs:
1963 Austin Mini
1964 Fiat 600D
1966 Renault R10 1100
1968 Ford Zephyr Mk4 V4 2-litre (black, red interior, Appliance five-spokes... pseudo-Yank!)
Alfa Sud 1100 (roller-skate on steroids!)
Vauxhall Cavalier
Mk3 Ford Cortina (for two nights...)
1951 Studebaker Champion Starlight Coupé (bought off Dave Kawell – stock as a rock and cool as f...)
Rover 216 (Jap-crap in Brit clothing – actually not as bad a car as it sounds)
Bedford/Isuzu long-bed pick-up (bike hauler)
Rover 825 Vitesse (fast and furious but shit)
1966 Porsche 912
1971 Porsche 914/6 (an original 'six')
1974 Porsche Carrera 2.7 'outlaw' thingie (backdated to pre-impact bodywork, uprated suspension, stripped etc etc)
1980-something Porsche 928
1964 Porsche Junior Tractor
There are others, but I've forgotten them now, plus a load of motorcycles...

Current line-up:
1965 Bug
1998 Alfa Romeo 156 2.0TS
Vanagon with 2.5-litre four-cam Subaru motor
Microplus Explorer with dual Yamaha O/B motors

Bit boring, really. ::)

That's the one. Limburg campsite, by the river. We caught the red-eye ferry and drove down. My passenger even managed to get some sleep at 70mph on the Autobahn!  :o

18 Hebmullers but only 1 Fugitive ;) When I parked it in Bad Camberg it was surrounded by a crowd 3 deep...

Ah, youth.... nice pic, Scott!  Sandwiched in between my first bug and the '63 was a 1956 Ford Parklane two door wagon I bought from the neighbors down the street for $100.  I drove this to Fullerton JC for a short time until a drunk plowed into me where Harbor Blvd used to curve west and become Whittier Blvd... totaled the car but I escaped unscathed.  Wish I had a pick of the white spray canned wheels and the dual 36" glass packs that exited in front of the rear wheels as well as the sprayed on window tint ::).  It had a 292 V8 with a three speed automatic (on the column) that you could drop into first and hammer then raise the shifter a click and drop back down for second gear and a nice chirp from the rear tires... 8) 8) 8) ;D

Some cool cars on this thread. Sarge, that wagon ROCKS! Us surfers like wagons. I haven't heard of anyone mentioning spray on window tint since the '70s. Forgotten about that stuff. I watched a few of my school mates apply that to their muscle cars and Cal Lookers, back then. Trippy stuff.

Well... I'm late to the party, but I finally found a couple of my old car images.

First pic:
When I oversaw the aircraft refueling at Long Beach airport, I also detailed cars and airplanes. This was one of my client's Cessna Citation with my Zermatt Silber '86 Cabrio in the foreground. Fun little car that bought when I got married. I converted it to Euro spec, added the Ronal bigger wheels, Audi Quattro leather steering wheel, Golf GTI rubber golf ball shift knob, Euro bumpers, removed the cat. conv., and added Hella H4 headlights. Also, a bigger muffler/outlet,  small factory front spoiler and GTI fender arch trim. I removed the Cabriolet badge and sawed off the last three letters so it read Cabrio. Shortly after I did that, VW started calling the new convertibles the same name.

Second pic:
A couple of years after I got divorced (mid '90s) I got a big tax return. So I went out got myself a Zermatt Silber Porsche 944 for my birthday. Slightly lowered it, repainted the Fuchs satin black and used #0000 steel wool to bring back the factory sheen on the outer anodized parts. Added the Hellas from my Cabrio, found a 951 Turbo rear lower valance and had it painted with factory paint (DANG, that was expensive paint!), replaced the 951 Koni rear shocks with new ones that I bought from where I used to work at Circle Porsche+Audi from Don Metz. Those weren't cheap, either. Don and I got on the P.C.N.A. database and looked up my car. Turned out that it was special ordered from the factory with a 951 Turbo suspension. Which explained why it had the upgraded undercarriage. Ended up getting the Porsche Kardex from the factory and signed by the family. Custom ordered plain black Lloyd floor mats for it. Removed the partially working Blaupunkt Monterey radio and found a used Blaupunkt Reno one for free from a fellow P.C.A. member. Had Long Beach Radio fully rebuild it and installed that.  Later, added the 951 Turbo lower rocker panel trim. Disconnected the power steering, too. When I went to the lower profile tires, it felt just like my Beetles and current BMW E21/320i. JUST RIGHT. I loathe power steering. Had it for five years and enjoyed it a LOT! Top ended it into the 130mph range, many times. Fun times in P.C.A. too. The underside of the car was it's claim to fame. You could literally eat from it... yes, it was THAT clean. I spent countless hours (I had a great paying job with tons of free time) making sure that my daily driver Porsche was cleaner than most show cars. Blew some judges minds at shows. HAHA!!

I'll have to dig up some more pictures.

My two current daily drivers.

First pic:
The best car I've ever owned and the car that I've owned the longest. My trusty 5spd. Volvo 245DL Estate/Wagon. The original and previous owner special ordered the car and on a European Deliver Plan. It's no big deal to a non-Volvo fanatic, but in the States, 5spd. 200 series cars are a rare sight. Which is why I bought the car after my second son was born. I felt unsafe driving two newborns in my Cabrio. Also, I liked it because it had roll up windows (I hate power ones), no roof rack, and vinyl seats. They also added the optional jump seats in the very back. So, legally, I can carry seven people and they all have seat belts.

I removed all of the badges, slightly lowered the front end, added Euro front turn indicator lenses, used Hella side indicators from an Audi, added a Hella rear fog light (wired it to the factory rear ones), added Bosch front driving lights (not in picture), painted front spoiler with factory paint. Normally, they're black in the States, removed the cat. conv. and front muffler (like Turbo configuration), removed the guts from the airbox for more flow, got rid of the 14" narrow steel wheels and hubcaps and found a set of early Turbo wheels. Blacked out the spoke centers. Early ones were all silver and late ones are blacked out but the outer lip is halfway blacked out. I wanted something different and in between the two types. Tinted the windows, added rear Turbo factory speakers and Turbo VDO amp and oil pressure gauges. (In the States, cars only had front door speakers and no gauges. We camp/sleep in it, surf, skate, fish, and haul a lotta cargo in the back. To me, it's the biggest station wagon from Europe I've ever seen. It's been the most reliable car for me, too. When I bought it, the odometer was showing 44,000 miles. It now reads 280,000. The car's only halfway to an engine rebuild. I love my VOLVO!

Second pics:
A year and half ago, I found a mostly original Polaris Silber 1982 BMW E21/320i 5spd. on Craigslist for pretty cheap. Only had 148,000 miles. But with a few lame aftermarket bits, as well. I bought with some extra money I had. Put the correct exhaust tip on it, got the right shift knob, tucked in the front bumper a few inches, removed the front side amber reflectors, replaced the BMW logos on the wheel center caps, and just really cleaned the car inside and out. I got just everything working on it. I dig this car 'cause it's very simple like my Volvo. Easy to work on and everything is manual! SO COOL. No power steering, windows, etc. Even the two-way sunroof is cable operated and works awesome. I found a set of n.o.s. Hella H4 & H1 headlights at Bill & Steve's for dirt cheap. Same ones that I used to sell at Auto Haus. It's also been a fun little car to drive. It's taken us all over So Cal. I never see the E21 (shark nose) cars on the roads any more. They made tons of 'em, but they're a very rare sight. I've always wanted to restore a BMW 2002, but they're way too much money and this car is more refined and no one wants 'em. Works for me! If I keep this one, the only thing I'll do is put European bumpers on and paint 'em the same color as the car. The car's rear end sits higher than it does in the picture of me taking off hard from the Cars & Coffee event.

Very cool. I learnt to drive in an E21 and think it was a great car. It was a '76 in met grey with a beige half leather interior and was a family car from new, I think it was sold in '95 and replaced with an E28 528SE. Selling it was definitely a mistake in hindsight, by the time I'd done with it it still had less than 60K miles on the clock but a guy kept knocking on the door of the house and offering (very) good money for it so in the end it went. It was a really good car to drive and one of the things I remember about it was the gear shift being super positive and the overall drive being very predictable (in the dry). After that a lot of cars I've driven have been dissapointing by comparison. I've been very tempted to buy one for a while and will probably fail to stop the urge at some point. Because of the 2002 I think the E21 is often overlooked but they're good cars.

Your next job is pictures of the new Rabbit GTI you bought, Mark.

Now that I'm here thinkin' of this stuff... I just realized that I still have those Ronals with GTI center caps and tires. I returned the Cabrio back stock U.S. specs when I sold it to buy the Volvo. That means my Euro bumpers are still here, too. COOL! I gotta sell that stuff on Vortex or whatever site all of the waterpumpers are on, now.

Anyone think that stuff is worth anything? It's old 1984. But I think it just might be. Hopefully, it'll get me closer to finishing my 1915cc. HEE!

Chances are those are the nicer "old" euro bumpers.  I think "back in the day" they were a bit heavier and nicer than they are now.

Wish I had some spare cash I'd help ya out with that stuff.  What size are the Ronals?

I'm guessing that the Ronals are either 14" or 15". It's been so many years, I forgot. I'll have to go dig 'em out. Haven't laid eyes on those in a LONG time. Hopefully, the bumpers fared well, too.
