Title: Which front tyres?
Post by: nigelg65 on February 24, 2009, 18:29:28 pm
Ok, so I think I already posted this question but as I'm about to get my money out I thought I'd get the latest thinking...

What's the best size front radial tyre for both looks and handling?

I'm running 215/65x15s out back on 7x15 rims. At the front I'm using 5.5x15in wheels and I'm thinking 155x15s.

The car is a '56 Oval. The wheels are American Racing five spokes.

I can't believe Im going to say this but Smart car tyre's  :o . I run ZX 145's but if its a trade off between handling Vs looks  ???
Ive got a spare pair of 135 ZX's in the garage sat next to a pair of 135 70 Michelin's that I have sat around for another project and the Smart only sits about 22mm shorter than the ZX
Theory is that the 135 70 Smart low pro should be a safer tyre  :-\

I think Nico-67 has picked some nice tyres for his '67 - 165/65 on the front. They're not too low profile and don't look too wide either!

155/70/15 about as high as 135r15.
i'm pretty sure christofe of DAS (orange 1200) runs them on his 4.5" fuchs.

How about 175/65/15 Continentals. They are the same height as 145s but wider.

sorry if this is off topic but any of these tires around 22" tall up front, if so, how much of a drop in inches did you have to go?

ok, an old topic...

I'm planning on using 155's in the front but the only thing that botters me is the height of the tyres.  Now I'm running 135 SR's michelins and I'm planning on using 155/80's.  Will they have approximately the same height?

I little calculation:  155/70 is 70% of 155mm, so that is 10.9 cm heigth or 4.30 inch...

155/80 is 80% of 155, so that is 12.4 cm or 4.90 inch...

but how high is 135 SR, is it 135/80 or 135/70 or 135/60 or...  they don't specify this on these kind of tires...

Ow man, I get a headache of these old tyres.  >:(  ???

Who can help me?  I'm I on the right track here or I'm a completely wrong?

the orange sparkaefer from DAS has 155/70 which looks to be a good alternative; width of 155, height of 135.
other than that i don't think 155 looks bad at all. though a little tuck in from the wheels more it look better, have a look at the black oval ragtop from the greenhearts or ron jayburn DKP car ;)
respectively firestone and vredestein 155 tyres.

how come the change?

135's looks great but I want my car to be a driver, not only (trying to be  :D ) a showcar.  So it has to put up with rain, small roads in bad shape, etc so I hope I can improve the driving experience (cornering and braking) a bit with these tyres.  I have the set Dokke sells in mind.  These are 155/80's, I will take them if the height is approximatly the same as my 135's.  I know rayburn runs them but I can make up my mind on these small pictures.  + is he running 155/70's or 80's?

Pictures of lookers with 155/80's would be nice!

i can't look any up for you as i'm at work, just checking up on the lounge quickly. but rayburn runs vredesteins and those are 155/80. they are definitely higher than 135.
otherwise, have a look in the gallery on the website of my club. jesse used to run 155 front tyres and switched to 135, so i suppose you can then see the difference for yourself  ;)

This is a rather useful website:

http://www.powerdog.com/tiresize.cgi

I use it a fair bit to give a guideline for tyre sizes. :)
