Most influential club in Europe I don't know... but somehow I hope we do, because there are some very motivated people in the club that put a lot of effort to 'promote' this scene. Also, I think the reason why the club is so tight (and some will say selective) is that we're first and foremost a bunch of friends. The cars follow naturally. So, what do you guys wanna know? I'll give you my favourite top 3 cars in the club - Xavier's sepia 67 on centerlines (the archetype of cal-look) - Philippe's green oval (went 12.6 w/o nitrous, we'll see this year) - Roland's Jeans bug ;D (PS: that's quite a collection of pics Tero, thanks for that!) Lot's of cool cars and nice people ;) Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Tobi/DFL on March 08, 2009, 10:50:06 am I remember my second visit to Spa: it must have been in 2001 when I arrived in my freshly rebuild oval (I was given the "bible" about one year before from some guys of a german club called DFL or omething like that... :D . The car can be seen in the background of one of the pics, parked next to Manuel Brügger´s (Luftkraft) stunning grey single cab). I was so overwhelmed when I drove to the plateau where all those beautiful cal lookers were parked for show and shine. Right in the middle was a huge tent with lots of cal lookers parked around it. It was the DAS club booth and I was overwhelmed by the quality of the cars. The one car that was my favorite back then was Mike´s blue oval with gasburners and a Berg 5-speed if I remember correctly.
On the long trip home to Wolfsburg we talked for hours about what we had seen as we had never seen so many cool european cal lookers in one place before. Well done, DAS! I've always enjoyed Pat's sunroof car.........clean, small but stout engine(69x90.5 if it still the same as when I spoke with him some years back) and a pretty color combo. The tan car with American's (please excuse me, I don't know who owns this car) is beautiful as well...........heck, they are all great! Thanks for the pictures. Pat's car had a 1776cc until last year (best E.T. around 13.15 I think). He switched to a 78mm crank last summer and immediately did a 12 something (can't remember). Well, when I say He, I should say She... Vanessa (his girlfriend) is driving the car nowadays... and she's faster than him!!! He is now building a dedicated racer. Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Dave Galassi on March 10, 2009, 18:08:17 pm Thanks for the update Yves. That is one serious project. Again, congratulations to everyone in the club and give my best to Pat.

Seven years ago my friend and fellow club member Sven and I took off for a trip to the Super VW Nationals in France. You have to know that the french border is just 15 min away from my home in Germany but we had to go to the other side of France - to Lège-Cap Ferret at the Atlantic coast some 1300 kilometers (around 800 miles) to go. We drove all through the night and arrived at the following morning in our camp. Kobus was so nice to book a cottage (shanty, what ever you want to call it) for us and our swiss friends Chritophe and Marc. The green Split used to be Christophes car and now resides in the states, the Ghia is mine. The cottages were between pine trees and and there were lots of VWs, mainly Cal Looker, mainly DAS cars. Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Georg/DFL on March 10, 2009, 21:21:32 pm It was so cool to get up in the morning, woken up by a barking pair of IDAs or two... And imagine you open the window shade in the kitchen and you are looking at Muppet Racer - great!
Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Georg/DFL on March 10, 2009, 21:22:43 pm Another picture of our little camp. Sorry for the crew cab on 17" cup wheels. ;)
Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Georg/DFL on March 10, 2009, 21:26:58 pm Anyways, I guess you got the picture. Sunshine, cool show, fantastic cars, what else can you ask for. Our good friend Serge Le Flohic of Super VW Magazine invited us to his house so we drove in a convoi to his place. It was awesome to drive with so many DAS Lookers in one long queue. The following pictures are taken in front of Serges house. Wonder what the neighbors thought. ;D
Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Georg/DFL on March 10, 2009, 21:29:57 pm Another one. I was really proud to have my car there. ;)
Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Georg/DFL on March 10, 2009, 21:40:40 pm The best part is still to come. :D
At the early afternoon of the last day of the show (Saturday) Sven and I drove back to our cottage. The swiss guys had left allready and our plan was to clean up the place, packing things up, taking a nap and then going to a 60s styled McDonalds in near by Bordeaux in the evening. After meeting up with other people there we wanted to go on our trip back home. It never happend this way... We were just sitting in the car, talking about the last days as all of a sudden the windshield broke a thousand pieces. A big hole was at the passenger side of the windshield, luckily Sven was ok. We stopped, had no clue what had just happend. I thought: "Ok, it's nothing serious, it's just the windscreen. It's easy to fix!" Yes, easy if you have a new windscreen. But we weren't in Germany were I know people with Razoredge parts, we were in the middle of nowhere. It took me a while to realise that... Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Georg/DFL on March 10, 2009, 21:43:16 pm Some Germans stopped to help us and so we took the windshield - or what was left of it - out of the frame. Some other friends of ours from Hamburg, Germany, came by in their Split Bus and we followed them in their slipstream back to our camp.
Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Georg/DFL on March 10, 2009, 21:59:03 pm Back at the cottage we started to think about what to do. Sven suggested to lend two helmets of Serge and drive back in style. :o
After an hour or so the DAS guys came back from the show and Kobus, Freddy, Laurent and the twins instantly started to help us finding a solution. Laurent suggested to use two Type 3 sidewindows he had like on a v-screen 356. We tried it and even "borrowed" a wood slat from one of the slatted frames in the cottage that we wanted to use as the center piece. Needless to say it was to flat to cover the whole opening. Suddenly my friends from Hamburg suggested to take a Baywindow windscreen. They even knew of an abandoned Bay close by. Ok, give it a try I thought. They drove to that place, took the screen and came back. Kobus gave us the rubberfoam mattress of his T3 (T25 for you brits) Bus, that is located on top of the engine service flap. We used it to dampen the Baywindow glass and taped it onto the Ghia. Then we took the T2 screen and taped it also. After that we cut out the rubberfoam from the inside. Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Georg/DFL on March 10, 2009, 22:10:46 pm It was dark in the meantime, we still had to clean the cottage and packing up. We were frickin tired because we got up that morning by 6 a.m.
I rubbed Rainex on the screen because it looked like it was going to rain. I really wasn't sure if this would bring us back savely but there was no other chance. We left Lège-Cap Ferret by 10 or 11 a.m. and had no sleep. When we hit Bordeaux after like 40 km of driving I was so tired that Sven had to drive. We swap seats every hour, one and a half at the max. We just stopped for gas and to pee. We had rain two times at night and we didn't drive faster than 120 km/h (75 miles) all the way. The Ghia looked like it had diving goggles... :D And that is the view from the inside: Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Georg/DFL on March 10, 2009, 22:17:04 pm After 15 hours of non-stop driving we arrives at my house - tired but very happy.
I was really glad to had Kobus, Freddy, Laurent, the twins and the guys from Hamburg. They gave us good support and encourage us. Thanks again after seven years, I will never forget your help! And Kobus, I think I still owe you a rubberfoam mattress! :-[ That is real Cal Look friendship! It's great to see unseen DAS pictures taken by other peoples ! Hum, I need to answer to Sarge (he told us some great stuff last week :) So, what about stories and histories from the Der Autobahn Scrapers vw club ? This is Belgian Volks Genesis... Let's degin five years before Das was created. When I was reading Sarge's stories about is school memories with his VW friends I was thinking about Pat Deperne (Beril green '62) and me at school. We met in '88 in a art and achitect school from Brussels caled St Luc. We were in the same classes during 2 years. I well remember his low '6O Resto-Cal parked in front of the school. For a school work we went together to Versaille, King of france Palace whit the '60. +/- 350km from Brussels. What a incredibel travel for me ! This car was so cool, so old, so low ! On the way we saw a Split bus and Pat and the guy made a hand sign. So far from your home you knew this guy ? I asked him ! ...He told me "No, this Bus is a Volkswagen too" ! I was thinking ! Hey ! Thats a realy cool car ! In '89, my neighbour and best friend was restoring a '72 1300 in azul blue and customizing it a bit whit large white painted modular wheels :) Like all the Bug Fans at this time, we buy custom parts to one of the first Volks Shop in Brussels "VW Auto kit " (chee d'Alsemberg). They got a lot of Jonhy speed an chrome parts :) My neighbour took me to a garage where I met the boss, Fabio, the brother of Rowan (DAS '67 yellow). Some years after Fabio began his well known shop, whit Pat, ScaraBe. Pat and me go separately to a show at the parking from Autoworld museum from Brussels. "Hey what are you doing here ? Hum, something like you I gues ! :) In '90 Pat left school and and make his military classes during one year. I did'nt saw him again until 1992. In '92 I buy a Buggy and I decide to go at is home. He was there working on the restored chassis of his actual '62. Until this thime we never stop to see eatch other. We went to Jabline where he won a best of show trophy wit the fresh restored '62. In July '93 I brought a german imported sea blue '66 from "Le garage de Paris" a place dedicated to VW too. The '66 became my daily driver for years. Whit Pat's help the beetle became à Resto-Cal on 4,5 polished Fushes. At this time, like today, I was leaving in Brussels. at 25km from Pat's father's house Braine-l'Alleud. I remember my father just past away and I was there as often as possible after school and the weekend. We went to Volkswagen auto dismantler all over the country to take parts. Type 3 long ratio gearboxes was the holly grale to finde. We try to go as fast, as low as possible. Some places of our local highways were in real bad shape and by night we made scratching on the road... making udges sparks all the way. I met there (Braine l'Alleud) new buddy from the town. Phil Poliart ("No fear' Green beetle) and after "The Twins" Fred and Mic and some one who left the club now David Baland ('55 black Oval - DKP replica). At this time there were a dying club in Waterloo caled "Doc Genie Cox VW Club". (translation: like doctor in genicology vw club...) Pat and Phil where members of this 20 dissapeared members club. We took the same stickers, we whent to the same meeting place, the Quick hamburger restaurant, all freeday, during one year. Some time we were only two or tree people on the place. Having the new Super VW magazine was always a cool moment to share. We learn about Cal-Look at this time whit articles about DKP story from Stephane Szantaï. In July '93, Pat whit his '62 an me whit my Buggy, went to our firs Bug Jam at Santapod in England. We discover Drag Racing Races. We foud this so incedible ! We saw pictures in magazines but we discover the track, the sound, the smell ! It was realy amazing for us and so different from our continental basic meetings. It was like USA for us!!! We swore ourselves to do Drag Racing one day on this track ! UK seene was so active compare to what we knew at home. In November '93 we decide to found a new and more serious, DKP inspired, name for the club. Late at night in the garage from David Baland. Pat, Phil and me talked about names. And we remember what we dit on the highway during the year... And our new name ; Der Autobahn Scrapers was created. Pat Designed the new logo and the new stickers took place on the lateral windows. That's "my begining souvenirs..." back in the days... :) Pictures : Pat '60 in '91 Pat' '62 un '92 Our LowFlyer back in '93 or '94 Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: MacRavens on March 11, 2009, 03:14:13 am The club is also realy active in Off Road whit the DOD Der Off-road Division. Here in '94 Rowan's '68 passed where famous others do not want to pass.

There's something about having to "Mc Giver" stuff up out on the road when misfortune strikes that makes travel in an old air cooled car exciting. Thanks for sharing some interesting stuff... makes The Lounge what it is! 8) 8) ;)

Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: MacRavens on March 11, 2009, 11:23:58 am Cool pictures Georg and Stephan ! :)
One thing I remember from the early begining, when de club was not DAS mamed. At this time, when you got a new VW project you can always talk about it whit Pat ! Often he think about it during the week an maide a drowing from the future car project... He is a great artist and put his/our ideas on paper. It was always a cool moment to discover his own car modified before you did it ! And to see what the car is going to look like ! Talking - Dreaming - Drowing - Making ! That's the way we did :) Pictures : Pat's own car project. His display project. Phil's green Beetle project in '89-'90 My sea blue '66 project. See : http://vw.skynetblogs.be (http://vw.skynetblogs.be) if you want to see other VW drowings projects from him ? Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: MacRavens on March 11, 2009, 11:26:24 am Pat drew also his own Shop catalog whit almost 5.000 sketches when he worked whit Fabio at Scarabe.
Unfortunately, now Pat dont have the time anymore to draw but I knew he like that. Tree years ago we asked him to make the EBI 1 T-Shirt. Like often, he did the drowing black and white and I put the colors. It's always cool to do some artistic thing like that whit him. :) Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: alfie the monster on March 11, 2009, 11:26:53 am VW Action last summer ;D

Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: ESH on March 11, 2009, 11:50:10 am That windscreen fix is awesome Georg! I'm surprised it didn't start a trend! :)
It has always been a pleasure to meet up with the European guys, I guess with clubs like DAS it's all about a great attitude and maybe a few mixed grills. Though there are some great cars in the club over the years it's the people that have come to make it what it is. As an aside speaking personally the best time I ever had with my car was largely thanks to DAS and their Drag Day so thanks for that. Anyway keep the stories and photos flowing. 8) Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: LuftsickTero on March 11, 2009, 12:55:01 pm That windscreen fix is awesome Georg! And is he still in the club? Haven't seen the car in a while - like it alot so! Georg, the 73 you'r talking about was own by Jean-Philippe Bernard. He was on the club at the begining. Sold his car +/- ten years ago to build a Oval, after à Notchback, after a 356. He never finish the projects and lost contact and interest. He is working for the Waterloo Volkswagen dealer for years. We kew he regret his blue car... We still knew the new owner he is working near the Macdonald from Waterloo. But the stickers where taken off and the car is not anymore in the club. Georg I found also a picture from Lège cap Ferret ! I well remember your incedible adventure whit your 34 ! Cool to remember thoses days but at that moment it was not so cool ;/ Hey, man, that makes true souvenirs :) Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Georg/DFL on March 11, 2009, 14:26:12 pm One of my earliest memorys regarding DAS was VW Euro 1996. I knew maybe a handful of people in Germany who were into Rest Cal and traditional Cal Look.
And then there was all of a sudden that white Looker packed with Empi parts. And it was on european plates, from Belgium. I couldn't believe my eyes and waited for the owner to come back to his car. The guy was very young, didn't even had a drivers licence and his name was Kobus. :D Next to Kobus car was the twins green big window beetle that was stolen a few years later. At that time DAS was close to three years old and it was the first time that I saw some of their cars in the flesh. I was really happy to find some guys who were also into these looks, knew anything about Empi, DDS and so on. Great memories, indeed. Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: MacRavens on March 11, 2009, 15:57:56 pm Next to Kobus car was the twins green big window beetle that was stolen a few years later. Lowered on the front with a slightly narrowed beam, 1 click at the back, 1915 engine with 40 idf, engle 110 aac, simple t-bird. I've had lots of fun in that car and I did around 10.000 km with it in about 18 months. I had to sell it to be able to afford my bay-window that I love, but I miss that car. So i know it was rusty, with chrome wheels, lowered at the back but i had lots of fun DRIVING it! And not posing with my perfect paint... ::) wich is what i'm doing now with my 68 ;D Next time i'll write a story about this club. Diederick, there wasn't much of a "Cal Look scene", at least not in mainland Europe. I think the scene was bigger in England, that was at least my impression by reading Volksworld. In the very small Cal Look community back then the twins 62 was an outstanding car. Back in 1996 (that sound like 5 min ago for Sarge and John ;D) there was just a handful Cal Look people on the old continent. Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Diederick/DVK on March 12, 2009, 16:55:39 pm Thanks for the explanation, Georg!
So, did the scene over here on the mainland really pick up at the beginning of this decade, then? At least that's what I take from reading the stories on here. I've heard of the twins, but I have no idea who they are. Rolands car was also from them, but he allready told the story.
and xavier, the off-white goes pretty good with the sepia brown, good combination. ;D Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: MacRavens on March 12, 2009, 17:51:46 pm I am not into "rat look" VWs, but the one on the previous page is pretty sweet. It has good look to it and best of all its a late model, so no early VWs were harmed ;D. Any info or more pics on it? Hello Lawrence the "rat look" your talking about is not calling "rat look" anymore... it's a style, we call them now VolksRod. ;) This car was not a car whit DAS stickers but just a car build by 3 members... just for fun. Pat bring back a scrappy '68, Dav guive the seats and I guive te Engine. The new owner modify the rear of the car in "hebmuler style" and the engine is now a 2.3 l. I met him by hazard. Riding in brussel's park in the summer 2006. I took some pictures :) Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: autobahnrowan on March 17, 2009, 12:14:41 pm This was my 68 offroad with 16" split wheels, 181 front beam and gearbox. Maybe... maybe not... If he bought his car in germany it can be an export model like my old white 64 that had US bumpers and came from germany. I had an all original Java Green '66 that was imported from Berlin and it had full bumpers, too. I didn't realize that those bumpers were so common throughout Europe during that era. here's a photo of the 2 Off Road Vans that are still in Brussels cruising the streets now, not as effective in the mud as the beetles, but sure nice and easy on those speedbumps they have here! the cammo one is Mike's and the red one mine Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: ESH on April 14, 2009, 09:09:56 am Always thought those busses were cool toys, useful too. 8)
Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: MacRavens on April 15, 2009, 14:52:31 pm I found some old ones. From spring 94 or 95 in front of Pat's house near Waterloo
Pat's '54 offroad and my old sea-blue 66. On the 66 I change the 4,5 fuchs with Lemertz 4,5 and 5,5 because of new front diskbrakes. I realy need them because we put a T3 gearbox under the car. My car was prety fast at this time, like 170km/h on the highway. Pat's Beril green '62 whit one peace windows and polished Fuchs (just to try, for fun). Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: yvre on April 15, 2009, 16:03:05 pm Those picture's are a little big. Here are some smaller ones. Good to see it’s still alive ! You guys may not know it, but the club is holding a weekly meet at the local burger joint since its beginning. Usually, after eating, we hang around in the parking lot chatting for hours until we can’t stand the cold anymore… :) A few years ago, we would also drive to a nearby bar and had a few drinks there to finish the evening. I remember one day, Dav (the previous owner) came with the bus and, as we spent some time outside, he proceeded to show us the new subwoofer he had just wired in. He only had one tape – with some real loud techno music (that will probably be alien to the majority of US folks on this site). We chatted for some time, then decided it was time to have a drink. And as you can imagine, leaving the fast food parking lot was always a good reason to have a bit of sideways action as the cars were engaging on the road. There were these 2 guys along the road that were hitch-hiking. They were watching all the cars blast past them, but only one person stopped to take them… Dav' in his bus (with the music still playing loud), with a face and behaviour probably akin to somebody high on coke. You should have seen their faces when they saw the bus stop, but more importantly when they stepped out of it!!! :D I don’t think they had ever seen something like this! Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Sarge on April 15, 2009, 16:17:13 pm Cool story, Yves! Back in the '70's, it was common to pick up hitch-hikers (and to hitch-hike as well). I stopped once for a guy in the '63... had the close ratio's, solid mounts and a stout 1835 with IDA's. I left hard... banged through the gears and got to the next traffic light which, luckily for my new passenger, was red. He couldn't get out of the car fast enough.... ;D
Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: Wayne on April 15, 2009, 22:39:40 pm 1995 while working at Competition Engineering in Tempe, AZ one day 3 guys came in the shop (Mike, Rowan, Pat). They were very interested in early pop out windows and early convertible decklids (I think they purchased all we had). They hung around most of the day and asked me if I knew of any Type 2 buses for sale. I knew of a guy who had a 59 blue panel that was forsale. I ended up inviting them over to my house for a few beers. They ended up buying the panel! They said they were on a west coast tour for VW parts. Bugorama weekend came and they attended. I gave Mike my trophy. I introduced them to Frenchy Dehoux who spoke french which they enjoyed! I must say I have not meet 3 nice guys as them in a long time. They liked my vert and gave me a few DAS decals and a couple shirts. I kept in touch with Rowan and Mike for a few years after their visit. When Keith Sueme shot my vert for Volksworld they were the first to congratulate me and gave me a hard time for not wearing my DAS shirt. I have always kept and eye on their club and their cars. DVB has grown into a icon club. One day I will visit them in Waterloo!

Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: MacRavens on April 17, 2009, 21:51:46 pm I remember the license plate!!! Hum... ;D I got some private stuff... your thinking about this one ? When I bought the split the two licence plates were on it. The californian owner keep the front one. You want a story Nicolas ? Take this one : We bring back thoses tree vans at home after our cal-trip. I drive the bus six months until someboddy stole it in front of my mother s'house. One night my mother call-me and ask me if I was gone with the bus during the last 5 minutes, without give her a goodnight ? I was comming back from a august VW show, 100 km from there. Back home... my bus was gone ! It was a verry bad feeling. Every boddy who passtrue this kind of experience feel realy bad ! And you imagine a lot of stories... Why Who ? More than one week later, some boddy call me realy upset on my phone ! And ask me : "When are you going to move your F... van ? He sil parked on the front of my garage door from two days !!!!" ? Hum... ok I come, where are you living...? I asked ! :) This guy found my phone number on a paper in the bus. "Call 0097756XXX if my car disturd". Paper I put on the front window when I was in a bad parking situation. So, I bring my Bus back, but... unfortunately without his realy good engine... I got no job at this moment and I sold it. I just I keep the rear Californian licence plate as a souvenir. Now, the bus stil in belgiun in a garage waiting for a restauration. Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: fastfred on April 18, 2009, 07:57:27 am my car at freddyfiles (ninovemeeting) 1 or 2 (pictures by speedwell) ... nice pictures, fab, meanwhile i lost these cool blue carb tops, i frikkin do not know where i lost them (otherwise they won't be lost i guess) - they matched my blue interior ::) but the major thing i know from back then was that i just found out about the wonderfull world of dzus-fasteners (or how do you type that?) and that i just ordered my (local) body-guy to make me a rear valance that was easily removable with those dzus fasteners. the rear of my car was photographed alot then. at that time, it was a kind of exoticness tea spooning a "big" (that ain't big now anymore) engine into a little engine compartment.
i hope to find some oldschool pictures real soon, and most of all, some time to scan them. Nice job, Tero. 8) 8) 8) Now, how about some club "stories" ;) So, some of you asked about club stories…. I don’t know which « stories » you expect but I have one « à la Bullitt » movie…sort of... Back in the end of the 90’s, some guys of the club rented a garage to work on their cars… To make a long story short, some thieves broke into and stole a 66 panel split bus (double sliding doors), some working tools and beetle parts, some of which came from South Africa. There had been a lot of thefts at this time in the VW scene, and all the signs were showing that the thieves would have come from the Charleroi area (Charleroi is a former mining town with big poverty and a bad reputation, 70km south of Waterloo). One of our friends knew someone who lived in this town (he was a respectable citizen) and was in the VW scene. We went to meet him and he showed us where some well-known bad guys were storing their cars and had their garages. During one of our investigation trip we met the bad guys in question in one of their garage, we talked to them pretending being looking for beetle parts to buy, during the conversation, we noticed that some boxes in the garage were from South Africa (the solen parts!!) and the chrome 356 wheels that were on the stolen panel . :o We left politely and we went to the police to report the fact… A week later, the police called us to tell that we were asked to go to the thieves’s garage to pick our stolen parts…. Pat took his split window bus (lowered with Empi 5 wheels 135 front /185rear, 1600cc DP with a 32/36 Weber) and with Mike we went to meet the police and recover some of our parts. All three sitting on the front bench seat, the parts being stored in the bus, it was an heavy load….. We were just leaving the place when I noticed a yellow Type 3 fastback with Borbet wheels and a ragtop,…… one of the thieve‘s car!! , coming the opposite way….Pat made a quick U-turn and started to follow the Fastback. The fastback being chased by a split bus began to accelerate faster and faster in the narrow streets of Charleroi, so do Pat he also accelerated, this pursuit is still in my mind,….. doing 60MPH in streets where you couldn’t cross another car coming opposite, taking 90° turns at fast speed on 135 tyres (the edge of the Empi were marked ! ), burning red lights,…..the guy was really trying to escape....At one point the guy tried to join a main road but he was stuck because of the traffic, Pat had managed to place the bus on the left side of the fastback and I began to furiously open the split door into the fastback side, 3 or 4 times,….the traffic moved, he managed to overtake and we followed him as he get on the small Charleroi’s ring where his fastback took the advantage on the split….he tried to fool us by pretending staying on the ring just before leaving to an exit but his ruse failed. We followed him in the exit, he burned again some red lights and stopped in front of ….. …a police building…..he ran into it and pretended to be persecuted by us. We explained the story at the officer who listened to him and us …..he unfortunately had to let the guy go as he had no charges against him….. This is were Pat told the thieve that he had not heard the last from the Waterloo’s guys !! We had recovered some parts, some tools, the split 356 wheels, ……the right side door of Pat bus had yellow paint on the edge, the front Empi rims were marked, and the brake pedal was bent……but what a pursuit !! We were three friends, we were the DAS founders, we had lived a memorable adventure…. .....but that‘s not the end of the story…… ;) next chapter on his way : fast food rodeo... So you remember that Pat told the thief that we were from Waterloo, „You haven’t heard the last from the Waterloo’s guys !!“ Some week later my mother told me that 2 guys went to her home pretending to be police officers and asking for a guy named Pat (my parents home was well known in the neighborood to be a beetle place). But she though that the 2 guys were too weird to really be police officers, so she asked them their police card….they told her that they had left them in their car and left to pick them…..they never went back ! A week later we were at our fast food Friday cruising night (it was around winter so we were inside the fast food). At a given time , I went out with my then-girlfriend to escort her to his car on the parking when I saw a black Nissan Micra (waouh exotic!) with 2 guys and a girl inside. This was one of the thieve‘s car ! I turned around and came back inside the fast food to alert everybody….we decided to go outside to see what they wanted ! (and catch them if possible!) We went out around, we were around 10 guys, …the Nissan had moved a little far away on the parking….we went to her direction with the idea of surrounding the car… This is when they started the engine and drove into our direction….they really tried to crush us …they could have escaped but not they charged us with the car…. I had a snap hook as key holder, I threw it on their car and broke a rear glass…. Another guy put a coin into a trolley and charged the Nissan with it ( courageaous guy !)… ::) Another one went to his car ‘s trunk to take a tool and he threw it in the side panel of the car… Jojo (RIP) had no better idea than to stand in front of the car and jump on the hood (like in the movies!!) holding at the wipers….but he didn’t last long and felt (unharmed)… :o With all the noise people were going out from all the restaurants and shops around…girls were crying and screaming (as always), ….. It was a big mess….finally the guys left and a few minutes later the police arrived but didn’t managed to catch them….. We learned later by our friend in Charleroi that he had seen the Micra and it was in very bad condition (in fact it was the car of the thief grirlfriend !! ahahah)… We "recovered" the Split panel in a Belgian aircooled VW shop, the owner had bought it to the thieves (supposedly without knowing the fact that it was stolen….while the fact had been well related in the VW scene!!) , he didn’t wanted to give it back witout money in exchange, so it stayed (and is still) under a car port with a leaking roof, and is now rusted and in very bad shape !! I could have told you about some more stories related to this affair, but I prefer to do not .... :P Just to say that the thieves did not emerged unscathed.... ;D The end….. ;) Title: Re: DAS - Der Autobahn Scrapers' thread Post by: MacRavens on October 31, 2014, 11:38:38 am True stories !
