Title: Does this spark any interest?
Post by: Donny B. on March 21, 2009, 04:12:12 am
I don't really have any information on this yet.  Got this from a friend and thought perhaps there are others out there who might be interested.  It will probably be out of my price range.  Oh well....

[Homer's voice]Finally... l.s.d. that's legal.[/Homer's voice]

Donny, do you have any more information regarding that differential?

I really don't have any more info at this time.  It should be different than a Quaif as a Quaif is torque biasing, right? and this has clutches like a ZF.  No idea on priced and don't even know who is doing them or availability.  Hopefully we can create enough interest to get a bunch at a decent price.  As I know more I will post it.

Keep me posted for sure Donny. The next big purchase will be a Berg 5, probably next year. I was planning to go the quafe route but this might be better.

It doesn't... you may compare this beautiful work of art with the ZF Diff. It is basically a copy of it (technically). The Quiafe is a Helical LSD differential. The way the Quife works, it uses worm gears to shift the torque and drive to the wheel that is touching the pavement doing most of the work.

When turning round a left hand bend, the car shifts it weight onto the right hand side, a normal diff would spin the left hand wheel but the Quaife puts the power to the right hand wheel therefore giving you more grip and push through the corner.

This said, a Quaife doesn’t apply torque to both wheels as a LSD with friction discs does. The way this diff works (and naturally the ZF) is that both wheels get driven the same amount and they may brake free through a series of friction discs in a bend in order to compensate for the different wheel speeds of the inner and outer wheel. This can be adjusted by changing the tension on the friction discs.

A car with a ZF LSD will always be faster through the corners on a race track as it will help also when decelerating and braking and when the wheel lifts of the ground it still gets driven. The Quife shifts all to the outer wheel and the inner wheel stops turning when lifted off the ground in a thight bend. The Quife has no locking action when decelerating or braking.

Does anyone have more info on this LSD in the pictures? It looks great.
