Thanks

I know that they're hot enough to burn your leg and leave a nice patch of skin on the muffler... :o

I see Eastwoods do header paint that goes up to 650 C but muffler paint (not for headers, manifolds etc) that withstands up to 150 C
I'm not planning on using either of those but do you guys think those figures are accurate ?

On the muffler or the head pipe?  I can see the head pipe being up there.......

At the head pipe over 600 deg - at the muffler it will depend on if your at idle or at speed - 350-400 at idle - after running for some time - and hot ,hot, hot when under full throttle

thanks for the reply...
when you say head pipe do you mean the header or the pipe that goes into the muffler ?
is this temps you have seen ?
i would have thought temps would drop a lot more at speed due to air-flow under the car reaching the muffler ?

so i borrowed an IR gun today. after 30 mins at 70 mph + i stopped and took some readings. then i went for a long (45 min) slow drive at 40-50 mph with some traffic stops and some idling. the header (1 3/4 stainless) temp was 200-250 C max and the muffler a bit below that. the hottest part of the muffler was the flange. even the pipe into the muffler box was 200 C or under
this was just pulling over and reading it with the car idling.
