Title: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: levis on March 30, 2009, 22:35:46 pm like the titel says!
need to see some pics of tyres 185/65, 185/70 of perhaps 185/80. because this doesn't fit!! (http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/3/0/8/3/DSCF1454.jpg) (http://www.volksforum.com/albums/files/3/0/8/3/DSCF1453.jpg) Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: streetvw on March 30, 2009, 22:47:49 pm you need short axles!!!
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Zach Gomulka on March 30, 2009, 23:01:56 pm Yep looks like a euro '67 still sporting the stock long axles. Even a little 165 will be pushed right out to the edge.
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Jim Ratto on March 30, 2009, 23:16:21 pm I think "part" of the offset problem is the BRM wheel. I ran long axles with 5.5" 5x205mm chrome wheels (356 style), with 205/60 on my '67 and they fit within fenders.
Speaking of rear tires, I'm going to be replacing my Firestone radials here REAL soon... they're done. Looks the the Goodyear Eagle GT will be my next tire of choice... they have fantastic grip in wet and dry... probably 195/65. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Donny B. on March 30, 2009, 23:30:46 pm I agree with the folks above. Short axles and the problem will go away. What width are the BRMs?
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Rasser on March 30, 2009, 23:37:45 pm Yep - You need short axles, as mentioned before it will look dumb even with a skinny 165 :-\
Here is a few pictures of 205/70 on MWS BRM 5,5" rims - and SHORT axles. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Rennsurfer on March 31, 2009, 00:07:13 am Silly question, but do the M.W.S. and F.F. BRM wheels share the exact offset? I'm pretty sure that I have a late '67 with (I think) long axles and 165/70/15 Signet tires on the back. The wheels & tires sit just right for me. They're even with the fender and I have an earlier set of F.F. BRMs.
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Jim Ratto on March 31, 2009, 00:21:45 am the narrower tires look just right on BRMs and a long axle car like yours, Mark. I't the steamroller 205mm+ tires that begin to protrude from the fender. I'd leave your just as it sits... short axles on your car would give it a tame appearance.
See ya Sunday? Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Zach Gomulka on March 31, 2009, 00:22:55 am Flat Fours are 5" (like originals), MWS is 5.5". My guess is the offset is slightly different, but I couldn't tell you which way.
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Rennsurfer on March 31, 2009, 00:35:09 am Jim & Zach... I agree with you both.
And yes, I'll be there on Sunday. See many of you at that juncture. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: lawrence on March 31, 2009, 02:29:07 am Here is a 185/65 at the rear; front too.
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: javabug on March 31, 2009, 02:47:57 am Word up on long axles. I think late cars look just right with them...as long as your wheel/tire combo is appropriate.
(http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h311/cmhauer/Worriers/Java_3.jpg) Yeah, yeah I realize Fuchs are different than most everything else as far as fitment. These are 206/65 Bridgestones. ;D Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: levis on March 31, 2009, 09:33:22 am it's the offset of the brm's alright, offset +12.
the brm's are from msw and have the same offset as the ff brm's. short axles are not a option this year, don't have the time to do the work, so maybe net year. what kind of tires do you guys recommend? Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: streetvw on March 31, 2009, 09:50:42 am you might get away with a 195x65 tyre, are you freindly with the local tyre fitters if so you could get them to try a few sizes for you might be worth a try
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: jimi323 on March 31, 2009, 11:04:01 am this in mine...with 195/65 on 15x6 fuchs

maybe a smaller size Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: jimi323 on March 31, 2009, 12:19:40 pm That's a good-looking car! Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Rennsurfer on March 31, 2009, 14:04:25 pm Jimi, that's one sweet looking car. What year is it... '65 or'66? If so, the late body trim looks good on it. I've often wondered what that would look like.
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: jimi323 on March 31, 2009, 14:25:34 pm thank u Fred...i'm honoured to receive some compliments from you!
i posted my car some months ago..but with bumpers and a low profile front tires... however the car is a 1985 mexican bug (here in Italy after the stop of vw german production, vw import mexican beetles..untill 1986 i think) that i modified like a 66.. but works are always in progress.... ;D may be a day i'll post some pics of the "kafka's metamorphosis" ;D ...but i'm so lazy.... ;D sorry for my bad English...i hope you understand everything ;) Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Jim Ratto on March 31, 2009, 14:36:29 pm Jimi..... that IS a great looking car and nice shot of it too. 8).... same size rear tire I am going to use on my '67

Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Rennsurfer on March 31, 2009, 14:40:07 pm WOW! That's very cool, Jimi. I can't believe that your car is a 1985. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Rasser on March 31, 2009, 18:37:40 pm Ok, I have tried a few other different combos on my car.
I have already posted the two above pictures in the current setup: 205/70-15 on 5,5 MWS BRM - short axles. I tried both short and long axles with different tire setups, before i restored the car last year and had it painted beige. Below is pictures of the combos I have tried: 1. 195/65-15 on 5" BRM (Donīt know what brand, but one of the very first repros made) - long axles 2. 3. 4. 185/80-15 on 5.5" MWS BRM - short axles. You might get away with a 195/65-15, but i would lower your car an inch, to help the wheel fit better inside the fender. In my opinion, the only wheel that can get away with using long axles is the fuchs wheel, most others donīt have as much offset as the fuchs does. Hope this helps in your decision. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: lawrence on March 31, 2009, 18:54:57 pm Lawrence & Mike, I've always dug both of your cars. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: levis on March 31, 2009, 19:36:47 pm Thanks rasser! are those 185/70 or 185/80?
the short axles and the brm rims are a perfect match. i've got hold of some 185/65 tyres on 5 spoke empi's so i can see if the 185's will fit inside the wheelarch. thanks guys, really appreciate it! if you got some more pics, just keep on posting! Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Jesse/DVK on March 31, 2009, 20:13:21 pm Great looking cars Rasser, how much did you lower the cars in the rear? Both ones.. I really like the look of the beige car. I have a 64 so short axles FF brm with 205/70 but mine looks a bit to high in the back.

I have a 64 so short axles FF brm with 205/70 but mine looks a bit to high in the back. Itīs the SAME car! Just before and after restoration. Donīt know how much it is lowered, I had the torsions springs completely removed, and tried numerous different positions until I acheived the height I wanted. The inside splines of the torsion springs are different from the outside, so you can set the back at exactly the height you wanīt. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Rennsurfer on April 01, 2009, 01:05:53 am Sarge, you nailed the combo. Short axles, BRM wheels (for their offset), and the wider Type 3 drums. Perfect!
Like Ratto posted, if a BRM wheel is preferred, then shorter axles and/or a narrower tire is going to get them even with the fenders. Other options are look at possibly getting a set of Fuchs 911 wheels for their inset. As we all know, they have very little offset and will fit well under any year of Beetle. Or, simply check out other wheel and tire combinations to get the fit that you're looking for, Levis. Let us know what you end up doing. In the meantime, I'm guessing a cheaper and easier cure would be to opt for narrower tires. But I'm sure that you want wide ones. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Zach Gomulka on April 01, 2009, 01:26:41 am Looks great as always Sarge :) Ever thought of swapping the rear wheels for the 6.5" versions?
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Sarge on April 01, 2009, 01:45:12 am Hey, thanks guys! I have adjustable spring plates and I can barely get a finger between the back of the tire and the spring plate, so no changes for me.

Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Jim Ratto on April 06, 2009, 17:46:11 pm Both are w/ 195/65's. Just put 195/65 Goodyear Eagle GT on my car Saturday. I actually prefer the slightly narrower tire (was running 205/65 Firestone), mostly because the sidewall is much stiffer now (they do not balloon out like 205 did), and are "flush" with edge of FF BRM. The diameter changed less that .5", so gearing changes seem neglible. Even at a lower inflation, these new Goodyears seem to be much more sure footed than the squishy Firestones were up @ 34psi (and the centers went away from overinflation on them). Hard to say if the car tracks truer on I-5 and 118 freeway in the gusty wind, as I think I have a sour front wheel bearing, >:( I'll post pics sometime soon. here's a link to Tire Rack's info http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+GT&partnum=965VR5GT&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&place=0 Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Fritter on April 06, 2009, 18:20:07 pm Just FYI, this is Michelin XZX 165R15 with short axles and I think a 3/8" spacer on the rear. It worked out pretty good for me on MWS BRM's. And you can't beat the old school look of tread pattern of the XZX, the 165 profile, and the BRM.
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: lawrence on April 06, 2009, 18:44:46 pm Mike, the spacer in there really makes a difference and I love the traditional look of the michelin 165 on the rear of a beetle. Well done!

Thanks! the 145/165 XZX combo really made a difference on my '65 as far as drivability on the street, but then again I was changing over from M&H DOTs and 135 XZX's on the front. :o :o Note to everyone: The M&H's are awesome for drag racing, but not so awesome on the street, so if you mostly street drive your car, get radials. Much more stable. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: lawrence on April 07, 2009, 00:20:31 am I know what your saying, Mike. Sadly, I no longer own that car. :'( On the bright side, Bill Taormina from your area bought it, so it should pop up at various socal VW events from time to time. Dyno Don did a lot of the negotiating for Bill when he bought it from me in Feb 2008. Oh, bummer... didn't know that. I'll keep an eye out for it in So Cal. Did you use the factory (or like factory) fender beading on that? Looks good. Sadly, Zenith Blue is no longer available. Still more on the bright side, I have a '64 metal sunroof project I'm working on now...should be cool. The fender beading is pearl white repro stuff from Wolfsburg West, as are the running boards. Getting back to thread topic; what tires do you have planned for that car? Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Fritter on April 07, 2009, 05:41:17 am Chromies with probably 145/165s again. I liked that combo.

Buddy Hale paint right? Red interior. Looking forward to seeing the next one. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Jim Ratto on April 07, 2009, 16:18:53 pm Both are w/ 195/65's. Hard to say if the car tracks truer on I-5 and 118 freeway in the gusty wind, as I think I have a sour front wheel bearing, >:( I'll post pics sometime soon. here's a link to Tire Rack's info http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Goodyear&tireModel=Eagle+GT&partnum=965VR5GT&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes&place=0 a few pictures Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Diederick/DVK on April 07, 2009, 16:28:11 pm looking good jim! i'm not too fond of ballooning 205s on 5.5" wheels anymore, either.
did the back come done noticeably? Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: sheep on April 07, 2009, 17:01:29 pm Bergs old 67 is looking good, glad to see zavala replaced the rear tires.

And I did a good job putting it all together. ;) ;) ;) I miss it, but I am happy it's in Socal in the good hands of Bill Taormina. I just hope it is getting exercised and not parked in a warehouse with Bill's other gajillion collector cars. Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Bryan67 on April 08, 2009, 02:05:04 am Those 195/65`s are just too low profile fpr me. On my latest car I am running some Cooper Trendsetter 205/70`s that look much narrower than the BF Goodrich`s I`ve run in past. I like the new 165r80`s that are out now too.
Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Rennsurfer on April 08, 2009, 02:23:01 am 165/80/15 sounds like a great tire size. Never seen any on a Beetle. I'd like to find a 175 with the same profile as my current rear tires are now, down the road, when mine wear out.
Looks like Tire Rack has the Khumo in the 165/80/15 for $45 ea. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1.jsp?startIndex=0&width=165%2F&ratio=80&diameter=15&search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&manufacturer=Kumho&x=13&y=6 (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1.jsp?startIndex=0&width=165%2F&ratio=80&diameter=15&search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&manufacturer=Kumho&x=13&y=6) Title: Re: need some pics of rear tyres, except 205/70 Post by: Bryan67 on April 08, 2009, 04:41:27 am Yeah, they are basically the replacement for the old 165 size and are about an inch taller overall.
