Title: Nick's
Post by: Sarge on April 06, 2009, 13:31:55 pm
Had a nice time yesterday afternoon.  The weather was close to 80 degrees making for summer like conditions.  I took some pics and will try to post a few up tonight.  Longtime DKP member Art Alvarez had his Chevy wagon there last night after winning the Boyd Coddington Memorial trophy at the Del Mar hot rod show earlier in the day.... a HUGE honor!  John Lazenby drove one of his Chryslers (almost a city block long, it seemed) and also took a ride in Bill Schwimmer's rig (further setting the VW hook).

Seeing Al's award was GREAT! Congrats to him on his accomplishment. That wagon is very cool and nicely done. Got to talk to him about it at Keith's book party, awhile back.

Seeing John's Black '57 300 was AWESOME! I've seen his other cars at Cars & Coffee... but I don't recall this one.

Easily, the nicest 300 I've ever seen. I really don't care for American cars, but '72 and earlier ones do get my attention. John's is absolutely fantastic in every detail.

I hope that the ride in Schwimmer's car caught another Cal Looker back into the school, as it were.

 ;D

The ride in Bill's '59 brought back many memories especially being a sunroof car like my '63 was.  Bill was kind enough to supply me with a bit of info on an item and I'm currently in persuit of !! ::) ::)  Also, I'd like to public thank Bill for the ride and his support in helping me with this disease and his vast knowledge of how to cure it.

Look forward to seeing more of you next month................. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Looks like a fun time.  John, I think of the '57 Fury in Christine every time I see one of those old Chryslers.   ;D ;D

I remember an old girlfriend of mine's father had a '61 New Yorker with a square steering wheel, that was unique.

Mike,

Actually Christine was a '58 Plymouth which is very similar to the 57.  The general lines of Virgil Exner's styling was carried thoughout the entire Chrysler product line at the time.  I guess I swayed because I own the 300C, but it was the high water mark of all of the Chrysler products for 1957 and to prove that it was Motor Trend's car of the year.

Hey, if it works for you go for it.  Somehow I always expect to see Jerry Springer driving one of those around.  Most of the "Mopar Crowd" of which I don't include myself (I drive Chryslers and there is a difference) fits right in with that image.

Sounds great, John... Bill's '59 is a perfect role model for that ride. Hope to see you at Nick's again and at Cars & Coffee. I usually take my Zenith Blue '67 Cal Looker or my Polaris Silber '82 E21/320i.

The wagon to me looks like a Malibu. Novas were shorter and boxier. It being a 2 door is RARE :o

The Malibu/Chevelle wagon is, indeed, a RARE two door. Hardly see 'em on the road, these days.

By the way, if anyone's interested in buying a '64 sunroof... that picture (IMG 5363) Sarge just posted is it and it's Mike Herbert's. Contact him if you're interested. New pan half (maybe both) replaced and all of the mechanical stuff has been gone through. I think he mentioned the price being $2,800 or even lower.

You might refer to it as that.  Over the years what I've come to learn is there are (3) levels in the Chevy, Ford and Mopar crowd.  Level (1) would be your real "quality people", level (2) that would be your "middle of the road group" and then we move to level (3).  This group would be the "bottom feeders", but beyond that is the Mopar crowd is typically about (5) levels below the Chevy and Ford group at this stage.  I've never been able to figure out why, but look close and you will see they do exist.

Thanks for the kind words regarding the '57 300C.  Yes, the bellows do move when the pedal is actuated.  The master cylinder is directly under this assembly and is a real pain to check and even more of a task to fill.  Don't know what they were thinking when they designed that one, but it was used for years.

Bill's car was a fun ride and moved well.  I guess the thrill is not what it was years ago.  Over the years owning and driving "fast cars" one becomes somewhat use to acceleration.  Not to long ago I had the oppertunity to drive a DB9 Astin Martin.  Christie is a huge fan of the styling and I of course appreciate the engineering.  The car was fast and everything worked well, but it lacked something.  Got back into our M5 and found it far more rewarding and a bit less $$

With that said I would think that Bill's car is the fastest street VW I've ever been in.  Also, you must remember it is different when behind the wheel as opposed to passenger.  Other than seeing a group of my old DKP friends the ride was the highlight of my day and I drove home in the 300C with a big smile on my face thinking about it all....... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

They look straight to me. But I'm like Sarge... grew up in the '60s, watching cheesy episodes of television series, Batman. So perhaps it's largely due to that.

the Hella brand, and I am fond of this idea
Rick's car is superbly done, and should be a nice add on to the DKP members

They look straight to me. But I'm like Sarge... grew up in the '60s, watching cheesy episodes of television series, Batman. So perhaps it's largely due to that.

The camera was only tilted at the villains headquarters....    ;) :o ;D

Hey Sarge,

I'm missing that Special Picture for Frank...or was he not around...??? ;) ;D ;D

Nick's was the first time that I'd known or seen Taylor's car with different wheels. I think the car used to have Enkei or American 5 spokes, before. Either way... suburb car.

Hi Frank...  Your boy has been VERY busy brushing up on his driving skills lately and has not come around much.  There's unsubstantiated rumor that he could be behind the wheel of a certain race car at Bug-In 34 but I didn't say that.... ::) ;D  You'll have to make due with a shot of Crawford's rig this time around. ;) ;D  cheers!

Remember, that illustration was certainly never a DKP rule book. Fast, clean and an owner with the right attitude – they're the important factors.

How about a mixture of personal preference? Nothing wrong with that! I see your point though, certain people including magazines may not label it as cal-look.

Yes I suppose this could be seen as my own attempt to retain my own seven piece's of trim  ::) but its just an observation of my own .

HUH? What old established school? Mason's black '62... Schwimmer's, red '59, Rayburn's 'blue '64, etc. I don't understand.

All of the above fantastic cars , great stance , perfect powerful motors , flawless paint with wheels to cream over  8) 8) 8). But .... a lot of what would have been removed to get that strip inspired less is more look seem to be finding its way back onto the car ? and accepted as the look  :-\

Yep could have been nasty , an oversight after replacing my linkage on the 901 , in the rush to see how the new motor performed with a jet change could have cost me big  :o
All lesson learnt DON'T FORGET TO CHECK YOUR LUG NUTS  ;)

But getting back on topic , please don't think this is an attack on guys cars or the guys themselves , just a perception of what is the look  :)

Personal preference is the key. In my opinion, I really don't care what anybody or any magazine labels as Cal Look. The first rule is... there are no rules.

Being an official "Old Guy" it takes me a bit longer to get task done, but none the less I still do.  Attached is a photo taken at the last DKP Nick's event on April 05.  The people left to right are:

Gregg & Pam Bunch, Mike Johnston, Art Alverez, John Lazenby, Mike "2180 I'll blow your doors off" Mahaffey and Tony Alverez.  These folks are all alumni of DKP I and are still alive and well.  Sarge was also there but none of us volunterred to push his wheelchair into the shot !!!!   :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

How long I've known these people:

Gregg  1965
Mike J. 1964 or '65
Art  1969
Mike M. (are you ready for this)  1956  ;D ;D ;D
Tony Alverez  1969

You thought I forgot Pam??  Can't remember, but it was back in the '60's.  She was a Babe then and still is in my eyes.  ;) ;) ;)  Sorry Gregg.

Updates:  Over he weekend I pulled the 1600 d/p out of our '63 and it is almost apart.  Getting ready to do something, but haven't quite decided to leave it stock or build something bigger.  I won't ask any of you, because I think I already know your answer.......

No one said you had to build the fastest car in the valley. How about a 78 x 94 with mild heads, 1 5/8 exhaust, 48 IDAs & a w120 or w130 Engle cam. Be good for 140 - 160hp and you can use a beefed up stock geared transmission. Sarge uses this combo and having ridden in his car I can say its a nice setup. Gives you that extra power when you need/want it yet docile enough to be driven every day.
