Title: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on May 03, 2009, 20:30:51 pm First a bit of history. I bought my first bug in october 1998 and this is how she looked ..............
(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9dc31b3127ccec601ba3b4a4200000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) I drove her around as she was for a bit and welded her up each year to get through the m.o.t. Finally in 2002 I fell through the floor, literally!! It was this point I decided to go at it full on and the restoration started. At first I began collecting parts and decided that a street/racecar was the way forward. I chopped the front end off and took the body off the pan before sending it for blasting. (I have lots of pics of this at home) On her return it needed the usual bottom 4 inches replacing and I continued to strip the roof paint as this couldn't be blasted off. I then mounted the body back onto the brand new pan (bought as the old one wasn't exactly straight due to 2 crashes that I knew about). I then mounted the front end and she looked like this. (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9dc31b3127ccec6019b770a8600000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) After a house move and a few other air cooled vw's along the way, I decided that although I was happy to have a go at finishing her off I just didn't have the level of skill I was happy with to build her to the standard I was looking for. (I will have a go on other cars in the future though!) So, after lots more parts buying I gave Jim at Cotsweld a call. I had met him at Avon park a few years before and his race car and the quality of the build were awesome so decided I wanted him to build my racecar. (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9dc01b3127ccec63cc7f6b36f00000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) At Cotsweld Jim started turning her into my racecar. Welding in new heater channels, bottom of the 'A' posts, both rear quarters, front bulk head and rear bumper hangers. Removing the dash and welding in sheet metal. Removing the inner vents in the engine bay under the rear window and repairing a few other small rust areas. He also began building my 6 point roll cage and aluminium interior panels. (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9dc31b3127ccec600109a6afa00000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9dc31b3127ccec6019ed8cb8300000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9dc31b3127ccec60063c92a0800000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9dc01b3127ccec63d3f6a93c300000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) Jim also fabricated a new bracket for the flip front. (Cheers PAS for the new front!) He has also made some really trick parts such as the seat mounts and decklid catch that are very cool. (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9dc31b3127ccec60051c62a1e00000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) My plans for this car are to one day run sub 13 second quarters and Ian from Wolfsburg performance services is currently putting an engine together for me. At the moment I am on the hunt for a set of good second hand 48 IDA's, anyone got any......... ;D (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9db22b3127ccec752364c3edc00000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9db22b3127ccec752db047e7a00000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) Most of the fabrication, repairs and bodywork are complete and I have to say Jims work is amazing. To say he is a perfectionist is a bit of an understatement!!! ;D Next comes the really exciting part of paint and build up......................... Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: vwcab on May 03, 2009, 21:36:14 pm Another racecarproject in the UK.Does everybody start racing overthere? ;D ;D
Anyway, good work so far and have fun with the build-up.What's the enginesize gonne be? And what wheel is that on the right in the last pic? Peter ;) (keep posting the pics) Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on May 03, 2009, 22:21:28 pm Thanks Peter, the engine is going to be a 1914cc for now and will be increased in the future (funds permitting). The wheel on the right is a Pro-et Fueller. I wanted something different inspired by the hot rod and custom car world. They will look stunning when on the car.
Cheers Paul. Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Pas on May 03, 2009, 22:30:54 pm Hey Paul

Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on July 16, 2009, 20:41:14 pm Hi all, well after a few months research and talking to quite a few people I decided to go for a new set of IDA carbs (cost of possible re-building Italian second hand etc etc)
Got them at a ridiculous price with manifolds and linkage so were too good to pass up! They really are a thing of beauty! ;D (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47b9d937b3127ccec7f4f789d5a300000040O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) Have just had a few bits come back after being triple chromed and they look stunning! Trying to decide what front tyres to run with also? Will update more soon............. Cheers Paul Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on June 22, 2010, 19:13:38 pm Ok a long delayed update!!
Floorpan is back from paint and it looks stunning!!! (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d803b3127ccefa39e47b471c00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/) Decided that I wanted something a bit different to black to go with the custom theme. Looks alot lighter in the pics but its a battleship grey I guess? The finish is like glass on the central tunnel which is awesome. The body is nearly ready to go at the end of the week, just the roof and a few other bits. Sorry about your hands Jim! (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d803b3127ccefa38115d279400000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d803b3127ccefa396abe479e00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d803b3127ccefa386a10677c00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/) Then it is build up time!!! The ali interior is also in for some painting action and the overall look won't be too different to Pat McDermotts '67 Fiat Spider in the states (colour combo anyway) Just need a new either Beetle wiring loom to modify or universal loom? Not long now though .............. ;D Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on July 17, 2010, 19:00:02 pm The shell came back from paint last week ......

The pics aren't the best quality as they are from a mobile phone but I think it still looks stunning and hasn't even been polished yet. More soon. ;D Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: leec on July 18, 2010, 21:06:57 pm Car looks fantastic. You are right about Jims work, it's

Went to see the bodyshell today and was blown away. The pictures do not do it justice at all. Jim has been busy and the body is now back on the pan, I had to post these pics as I can't stop looking at it. Again Jims work is awesome........... (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d901b3127ccefafd01383ab600000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d901b3127ccefafd5d59bbc900000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d901b3127ccefafc78e1dbb700000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) next step is a bit more paint, some powder coating, chrome and then put it back together!! More soon ;) Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: JSL on July 21, 2010, 10:47:38 am Beautiful!!! :o ;D

Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on September 30, 2010, 19:21:43 pm A bit of an update....
Past couple of weeks things have really started moving. I tried my hand at helping put the car back together (read got under Jims feet and kept losing bits or finding 3 of the same part!!) :D. Last week saw a majority of parts come back from the powder coaters and the finish and match to the floorpan are excellent. Then it was build up time ....... (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d711b3127ccefb68881d882f00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) Front frame work and fluid resevoirs with front beam. It takes so much longer to put everything together when you don't want to scratch it!!!! All fun though..... (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d711b3127ccefb688dac493400000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) The Neal pedal assembly and CSP shifter look fantastic!! Don't ask about the aftermarket handbrake........ never ever again. Need a good second hand original one to replace it!!! (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d711b3127ccefb68954e49da00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) We (Jim ;)) also had to see what the monster tach would look like? (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d711b3127ccefb688510498c00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) The next stage is more paint on the interior panels and doors and a few other bits....... (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0d711b3127ccefb683add098600000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) This is just a selection of the inside panels prepped and ready for paint. They look so good and again Jims work is second to none! More to come soon......... Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: AntLockyer on September 30, 2010, 20:20:02 pm Looks very nice indeed.
Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: JSL on September 30, 2010, 20:52:55 pm Loving it!!!!

Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on October 13, 2010, 20:26:22 pm More progress today. After I nearly ruined the new windows ::) and then Jim fixed them, we fitted them up.........
(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0ce32b3127ccefb0e070e9b8300000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) Once the windows were in we had to see what the side trim would look like ....... (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0ce32b3127ccefb0fd6677a6600000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) Battery in and MSD mounting plate. (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0ce32b3127ccefb0e59859b2700000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) Once the aluminium panels come back the inside will look awesome. More soon........ Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Dereck on October 15, 2010, 22:19:02 pm Such a lovely Bug and fantastic work. Thanks for sharing, a real inspiration.
Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: red baron on October 16, 2010, 10:05:36 am Inspiration si the right word, really stunning color combo and really good and well detailed work. I really like the mounting for the front end. this will be a really sweet ride!
Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on November 04, 2010, 21:19:14 pm Thanks for all the great comments guys ;D.
Today I went to see Jim as the aluminium panels were back from the painters and I was told they looked rather good........ (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0cf25b3127ccefbdcf092d41500000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) I was blown away!!!! The panels still looked wet, i'm so happy with them (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0cf25b3127ccefbdc7883557000000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) We then spent the day fitting the passenger door. Having never re-built a car to this level before I underestimated how long putting something you really really really don't want to scratch back together took. However after struggling with the door felt and one piece rubbers (proper mission ::)) It was on and had the beginnings of looking like a car again. (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0cf25b3127ccefbdc7505156800000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) Once the door was on we obviously had to try a wheel :D More soon.......... Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Dereck on November 04, 2010, 22:46:51 pm With each post it's looking even better. Looking forward to seeing for real.

Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on December 13, 2010, 21:34:52 pm Things are really rolling towards the deadline now. After 4 steering columns the front end is finally just about together with a few more bits needing painting. Jim has also mounted the washer bottle and fuel pump on the front which looks really trick, will get a photo of that tomorrow, the tank has now been finished and looks great!! At the end of January it goes to Ian at Wolfsburg Performance services for its motor!
(http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0cc32b3127ccefb8e2d10022c00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) The drivers door is now on just got to finish putting the window in tomorrow. We also had a trial fit of the flip front before that gets prepped for paint. The wheels sit so nicely, we could have looked at it all day!! :D (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0cc32b3127ccefb8edc35c3d900000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0cc32b3127ccefb8ed689425000000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) I know it not a VW but I had to take a picture of the full tube chassis Ford pop that Jim has nearly finished for another customer. It is fully pro-street and it is a work of art!! It is going to be an awesome race car when it is fully finished. I know I keep saying it but Jims work is simply mind blowing. In a word...slowly, it's in for paint currently and the pan is at Flatlands engineering for some mods. I need to update the build thread. Good luck with the remaining build, it is going to be a cracking car ;D Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on January 25, 2011, 19:36:41 pm Small update.....
Jim has been busy over the Christmas/New year period and plumbed in the fuel and brake lines.... (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc20b3127ccefc17624be8a700000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) I spent the morning fitting up the axles and tubes ready for it to be reunited with the car...... (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc20b3127ccefc17844569ea00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) It went in great, until........ We tried fitting the adjustable spring plates. They really aren't as easy to fit as normal spring plates does anyone have any experience of fitting adjustable spring plates as any advice would be great, having tried two sets of spring compressors, two jacks and a ratchet strap we gave up!! Even with little to no weight in the car it can't be that hard?? Before the day was out I had to try a rear wheel tyre to see how they would fit. I need opinions please as Jim hates the way they look and I am undecided but think I'm going to have to get new wheels ??? They look great side on and nice and fat its just they stick out too much in the arches, may be a different profile tyre would be better?? (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc20b3127ccefc17ff0ba83100000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc20b3127ccefc168b42093e00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://ttp://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc20b3127ccefc16fb48090c00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc20b3127ccefc16fb48090c00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1dc20b3127ccefc17645ae8b500000040O10SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D1/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) The fronts are so nice and 'tucked' I think maybe the rears would look very wrong, sticking out the way they do? Besides I get to buy some more wheels which is always good ;D (http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a0cc32b3127ccefb8fd927a31d00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) I think I know the answer but, what should I do?? Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Rick Meredith on February 01, 2011, 22:38:36 pm Not to change the subject but I don't think you are going to want the seam in the axle boot on top like that.

Thanks Rick, we moved them after the pic was taken, I put them on wrong ::) Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Wout on February 02, 2011, 00:14:30 am I had the adjustable springplates before but I can't remember how we get them on :-\, now I have 944 ones and they fit rather easy.
Maybe you can try with using longer bolts so you can start with the four bolts in it before you have the plate in to position if you know what I mean? Good luck!!! PS: The car looks allready stunning!!!! gr Wout Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: JSL on February 02, 2011, 11:02:40 am Not to change the subject but I don't think you are going to want the seam in the axle boot on top like that. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but whats wrong with having the axle boot seam at the top? Which way round should they be? Hey Happychappy, your build is looking awesome!! I quite like the wheels as they are different but still nostalgic looking ;) Do they do them in different off-sets? Is it Chevy stud pattern that your using? J Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on February 02, 2011, 12:03:24 pm Hi JSL thanks I can't believe its my car! I really really want to keep the wheels and they do fit but I can't get them in a different offset as they are cast and the smallest width they do in chevy five stud. Once everything is on properly including the front end and running borads will look again and maybe just change the tyres or not?
Adjustable spring plate problem solved though ;D As for the axle boots they are back with the seam/join at the top as we decided that this was the weakest point and didn't want oil leaking out, I think factory they were horizontal?? Not sure but we thought top is best to so changed them again. Cheers Paul Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: qubek on February 02, 2011, 12:17:25 pm Not to change the subject but I don't think you are going to want the seam in the axle boot on top like that. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but whats wrong with having the axle boot seam at the top? Which way round should they be? I used to put them that way too. But then the manuals says otherwise. My understanding is that the seam is less flexible then the rest of the boot, and when the axle moves up and down, the "lip" is gradually torn from the rest of the rubber. A little bit silly topic comparing to the rest of the work that is described here :) Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: AlexB on February 02, 2011, 18:46:07 pm Looking good Paul - do you want to borrow my Centerline convos to try on the back ? they are 6x15 chevy 5 stud - currently have M&H slicks on - we had similar problems with the 7 inch centerline autodrags on the rear of the Jagerbug - hence the flared rear wings :D

They didn't fit due to the calipers and discs touching, i'm guessing the kit for shorter axles has different caliper mounts and discs. Should be sorted by tomorrow though ;) Got the shocks and CSP torque bar fitted up aswell .... Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on February 09, 2011, 22:57:31 pm Are there urethane bushings in the CSP torquebar mounting ? It does look like they are but they are actually part of the shock. Colour matches very well with other urethane bushes though :) Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Rick Meredith on February 10, 2011, 01:33:04 am Not to change the subject but I don't think you are going to want the seam in the axle boot on top like that. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but whats wrong with having the axle boot seam at the top? Which way round should they be? The seam is not very flexible compared to the rest of the boot. Since the axle only moves up and down you want the seam at either 3:00 or 9:00 so that the boot will flex correctly. I usually put mine facing forward but theres no reason why facing backwards wouldn't work either. Very long journey but well worth it, can't wait to give her some beans at the strip!! ;-) Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: Happychappy on August 13, 2016, 23:07:09 pm Haven't put an update on her for several years so thought I would.......
After the Volksworld show I took the car down the strip for the first time and it was brilliant. I couldn't give it any beans as I had to run the engine in but once I'd done that I started to see what I could get with a target being 12 second quarter miles. I took it over to Das Drag Day and had a fantastic weekend running a mid 13 quarter and coming away with best Cal looker at Jeffs cruise to the King which was amazing! (https://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a6db08b3127cceec6f72a58baf00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00205740940520160529143529760.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) My best run to date is a 13.2 at 101 MPH set at Santa Pod. I have since had the gearbox re-built after breaking it at the Cal look Drag Day and a freshen up of the heads and made a few other small changes and will hopefully be out again before the end of this year and into the 12's. A wheel change is also very much on the cards............. ;D (https://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a6d911b3127cceece88b42e7db00000030O00SatHLRu1ZA9vPh4/cC/f%3D0/ls%3D00205740940520160730230624829.JPG/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/) Cheers Paul Title: Re: My '72 racecar Post by: razoredge on August 14, 2016, 20:41:34 pm Dude change the wheels? They look epic - I have wanted to copy the CB performance black cartoon drawing logo car for years and yours reminds me of it.

You haven't seen the new wheels yet ;D I'll still be keeping the original wheels too. I am a self confessed and identified wheel whore so need to feed my habit when I can....... Not sure what meeting yet as still trying to find one that I can get to when I'm not working, possibly hot rod drags.... Looks like you have made some progress on the race car??
