Title: [SHIFTERS] - Which do you use and what do you think of it?
Post by: Jordy/DVK on January 03, 2007, 23:52:38 pm

 Hey Guys,

I'd like to know which shifters you use and if you're happy with it..

Which one do you have now? (brand/type) What's the reduction in throw (40% or 60%)
And what do you think of it?

 Thanks, Jordy ;)

Berg, 40% and yes I'm happy with it ...

Angled SCAT shifter, quite sure it's 40%

While driving it's a dream stepping up for a stock shifter. It's just that while idling my reverse gear is a little tricky to find sometimes, but that might be due to my shift coupler...  :-\

I was thinking of going for a BERG just because of the name. But I figured that maybe the guys from the USA who have better access to all those cool Type 1 tuning parts got experiences with other brands than BERG..

I do want to invest in a good shifter, because I think the effect of a different (and poor quality) shifter is very noticeable...

I'm still stirring my gearbox with a STD shifter btw...

I currently use a "indy" Hurst.
I had some problem to adjust it but now it is ok and run smooth, reduction about 40%

I use a Empi Eliminator in my Ghia, and I have managed to use it at the track as well, but they do need accurate adjusting.

My favorite shifter at the moment is the new CSP shifter. I have a 60% in my 66 racecar and a 40% in my 62 Beetle.

Berg 40% or 60% depending on your preference - they are simply the best shifters ever made for a VW

Also this is just a personal opinion but The Empi Eliminator has to be the WORST shifter ever made for a VW - I had an Original for about a year then fitted it in the Manx and promtly sold it about a month later because it was sooooo BAD and there's no way I could justify have that much money tied up in something I was never gonna use  :)

I think it's too bad GENE BERG quit selling those shifters with black handles.
I can only find the polished ones. I think the black looks good with with my red paint and black/white interior...

Does anyone perhaps know one for sale? (40% for '68 Bug)

I have a Hurst INDY in the Fastback. It took some getting used to, it shifts "ok". The GTV has the E-Z-R, shifts quite well, I was really surprised! I have a Berg in my '67 (bought new in '99), and it is by far the best, but I have decided to replace it with a DDS since that will be more period correct. The Scat and new EMPI shifters are GARBAGE!!!

at first glance, i'd say the 12" X bend...

Scat shifter. Very happy with it and pretty good quality, although I really like the new CSP shifters and maybe I'll order one.

I think the CSP shifters look a bit too modern for a classic bug...
But I am also considering a CSP, because I think for € 189,- it'll be money well spent...
(And I don't have to hassle with payment/shipping overseas...)

And I have yet to figure out exactly what type I need...

jordy, for that kind of money you can get a neat berg shifter off thesamba!
especially with the current $/euro rate!

my 2 cents

Diederick,  I'd use a Berg shifter.  My preference is a 40% with the extra bend, as I'm not really tall.  If I buy another, I may go with a 14" with the bend.

I use an old fingergrip 40% Berg shifter. The Berg shifters are the best in my opinion. With that said I really like the old copper Hurst shifters as well, looks cool and shifts good too

For street use I just love the old Hurst "trigger" shifters. Very nice to use and looks just right in my eyes. They come in both chrome and copper finish. Both nice, but the copper looks less like the Empi replica...

In my street/race car I currently use a replica Scat shifter, I think it shifts good but I'm about the only one who can shift with it.
It's much getting use to... really like the hurst shifters too, especcially the copper ones.

I must admit I prefer the 60% myself - I had one in the manx for a while and it was SUPERB but it was a friends and I had to give it back  :'( I am now running an Old Skool "SPARKOMATIC" shifter - it just a formula vee type with a nice base piece that goes with it (wait for the next volksworld magazine for a better look ;)) as a shifter its OK  :-\ but I WILL be fitting a new berg 60% for the Cruz down to Bug In  :)

I do Have an old skool Berg5 shifter handle if anyone is interested  ??? ??? ???

I had the 40% Berg in my '67 and a buddy had a 60% in his '62 so we traded up for awhile. At first it felt waaaayyy too close, but I got used to it. When we traded back I could hardly believe the difference! The throw on the 40% felt miles longer than the 60%! As far as Berg shifters go, I chose the 60%.

Post by: Jon on January 05, 2007, 10:13:48 am
I have been using a copper Hurst for years, but I’m not that impressed. The construction is to flimsy for hard and fast shifting.  That’s why I now use a Berg shifter, its not a world apart, but its more solid and takes the beating easy.
I have never split my Berg to see the magic, but from the Berg catalogue I see its just a steel ball jammed between two plastic plates/rings, much like the Hurst/Empi. It's not rocket science, so I guess there must be a "copy" out there that is just as sturdy... for those on a budget. Some of the cheep shifters I have seen appears to even have the same base as the Berg?

I have used an EZR for 10 years now, no problems until I came to fit my new gearbox and had lots of difficulties finding gears.  Have put the stock shifter in for now and will run it like this for 12 months or so and then possible either go back to the EMPI or maybe stick a Berg in.

I had a vintage 9 1/2" Berg in my '65 Ghia and I loved it! It never even needed any adjustment, just bolt it on and run it. My '59 bug will get another vintage Berg, this time a Ilocker. After running a Berg I'm not going to change to another brand, ever. Form, function, style, quality and reputation in a combination you juts cannot beat. But let me tell you that locker is a bitch to adjust  >:( I never got it to shift right in my Notch. So Berg all the way and they are one item which does not depreciate with age!

Title: Re: [SHIFTERS] - Which do you use and what do you think of it?
Post by: Jordy/DVK on January 08, 2007, 15:45:36 pm

Depends on your car. Early cars (i believe) ->55 and 68-> bugs had the shifter location somewhat closer to the driver.
For those cars you'll need a straight shifter to keep the handle in its original position, for cars with a bend in the shifter you need the one with the bend.

If you have a car from 55 thru 67 you could take a straight shifter to move the handle forward (if you have long arms) or the one with the extra bend if you want it closer to you.
For early and 68-> bugs you can take the one with the bend to move it closer and the one with the extra bend to move it extra close...

The length of the handle, and % of reduction also depends on what you prefer..
I believe 12" is the right length to keep it original. (don't know for sure)

I bought a old gear shifter from ebay it was made by Hurst and was called an Indy shifter. I put in in my '72 and it was terrible the gears used the make a crunching nosie. So I sold it on ebay and bought a berg locking shifter which was very expensive but really really good. I am using it in my 1972 beetle but when I sell it Iwill keep the gene berg gear stick and put it in my 1967 I am getting

The Indy Shifter is not the Hurst shifter to use. You need the one with the round ball and the loop to pull up on the engage reverse. Don't know that they ever had a model name

I have used Bergs on my bug and ghia and love them, I am about to do another and picked up an original Hurst, so will see how it compares (I must admit I do like the look of the Hurst).

Whilst we are on the subject of Shifters, is $500 bucks a good deal on a DDS shifter 8)?  Looks good apart from a small piece of the handle is chipped (where it fits the shaft)!
