Title: DKK and the Cal Look Lounge
Post by: Jim Ratto on May 06, 2009, 21:02:22 pm
So how much did the Lounge do for getting so many members of DKK in contact again?

I think it's very cool that the group of you all got to hang again @ Bug In. Nothing quite as fun as reliving days of youth with VW club members from days gone by.
(I was in a small, but tight-knit club in the 90's, and we were like a family, although a heavily disfunctional one... it's always nice to get in touch with old buddies and see how fat they have gotten in 15 years ;D)

Jim,
Although I'm not a member, I must give my 2 cents. I bet in some way or anouther, it had everything to do with them meeting up again. Forums are great. That is the beauty of the internet. I've chatted with a few ol' timers that are anti web, they can't stand it. And they hate the whole e-mail thing too. I say they need to learn how to use it and their hands will cramp up too.

If it wasn’t for the world wide web, a lot of people would never make contact, or keep in touch with, old friends and family. When I see old friends I used to roll with, I crack a smile right away just picturing the things we did in our cars that we wouldn't dare do these days; since we are so mature now. ::) Furthermore, it would be a real bitch to work on and find old parts for these little tanks we love to haul ass around in. Very cool D.K.K had a reunion at the Bug-In. Casey.

I agree. I think the Lounge is a great place to poke fun at your old friends and make new ones. Best thing about it is that is has a life to it... it's not just a cyber-tech talk place to ask how to sync your carbs.  ::)
people here care about the history of the scene.

Dk Who?

Also, it's pretty evident that the "Deeks" will be in full force again very soon. Every time I see them, there are more members and cars rollin' out. Good stuff right there! Its probably only a matter of time till we are all going to some sort of D.K.K. hang out or event, huh.

It all started with our friend DKK Rick I think... I know he did a tremendous job in getting the DEEKs on to the lounge.
And I guess that their private section on here also has something to do with the reunion, if any other clubs would like a private section let Trond and I know, and we will look into it.

Rock on DEEK's!

this site is 100% responsible for us getting in touch with all our old friends from the club, making us go thru old phone numbers and calling old friends and i dont think any of us can thank this site enough. whats strange is that almost all of us still own a vw but didnt run into one another thru the years. let this be a lesson to all the younger members on this site, you will meet some of your best friends because of this car, friends you will have for life. :)

JHU, Trond, BeetleBug, DKK Rick, and anyone else that's responsible for this great site... on behalf of D.K.K. we really owe you all a huge thanks for getting us back together.

I echo the same thoughts as Randy's post.

Rick pulled me in. A few years ago I bought the URL www.derkleinerkampfwagens.com with the intention of throwing alot of old pics up [still haven't done it yet] and I had a few old members contact me through that. I was already familiar with the lounge when Rick finally made contact and he pointed me to our new forum. The rest was history.

I also have to give kudos to Mark [Fred] who took over the DKK reins when Rick started to fade. Thanks for all your effort, I hope to see you guys soon.

i'm a ex-prez from DKK..
The first VW event I have been to in 25 years was the Bug In last month.  I did internet searching about 5 years back for DKK and came up empty.

What a surprise to see the group...

The Lounge has been a great way to catch up being 1,000 miles away..

Thanks Lounge Guys..

Danny,
I would have to say no, But I do remember once saying to you.  "Here is your motor, get the flywheel torqued, it is not tight"    :)
I have done some motors for some friends but very few...  I did just ported a friends mazda rotary last week. I do love to play with getting air in and out...  I still have some untried theory's I would like to try out.  I'm building a 1/4 mile car so I plan on implementing a few.

Yea... seeing you brought back many memories too.
I'm sure at the classic we will be on reminisce overload....

The lounge is 98.6% responsible for getting us back in contact again.  ;D

The private forum has give us a place where we can put together bits and pieces from everyone's memory and trace down ppl... whether they want to be found or not!

We can't thank JHU, Trond and BeetleBug enough for this opportunity.

No... I ran a wire from the battery that came out in between the panel under the seat and the carpet and ended in a 2 wire plug. Originally I rigged it up so I wouldn't have to pull out the seat to charge my RC car. When I found the blender, I just cut off the end and crimped on a similar plug

Man, I thought I was the only geek to get into RC racing. I made the same battery mod in my bug. There was a time that every other entry in my checkbook was for a hobbyshop! I even used to do custom paint jobs for other folks RC cars to help feed my RC monkey!

Here's a pick of my highly modified RC10 Baja I used to race at a track in Costa Mesa I think [long time ago].

Did some off road racing but mostly on road racing.

in '92 I was Norrca Southern California 1/12th scale champion. I also finished 8th in the Norrca 1/10th scale Stock National Championships out of 60+ racers. I was the only racer in the A-Main that was there on my own dime (not sponsored). Everyone I raced against had more $$$ in NiCad batteries than everything I brought to the track with me.

When i joined there were two official requirements.  Rims / lowered...  From these two simple requirements grew the greatest trend setting VW club of all time.  People had so much pride combined with innovation and desire to be the best modivated us to improve our cars and help others do the same...  Wow i just got a tear...
But i do remember the unofficial (you had to drink like fish) rule...

But i do remember the unofficial (you had to drink like fish) rule...

I remember the car had to have a decent paint job, engine had to be clean whether it was huge or stock. And the overall car had to have been finished and presentable. As far as the fish theory is concerned... dunno, I must've somehow barely squeaked in, 'cause I only drank like a microscopic guppy. Wasn't ever a big drinker. Long as I had my dark bier(s), I was a happy camper. But I DID get a nickname that stuck all of these years due to the fact that I LOVE to eat food. Fred Flintstone.

 ;D

Heck, I was just stoked that there were freaks, like me, that wanted to have fun. That was the number one priority and the call of the day. And if said fun was had the expense of others... even BETTER.

Fred, if I remember correctly, I think your nickname came from your short fingers! I believe it was a McNew observation. As for your early car,  I think it would have looked a little more like this.

And Steve, your acceptance into the club had nothing to do with your car, you just looked good in shorts!

Jeffrey, you're absolutely correct. It was half that and I ate like a pig. Wow, I should have stuck with the ragtop... that orange DOES look rather nice. Good job, that's suitable for framing.

And Steve, your acceptance into the club had nothing to do with your car, you just looked good in shorts!

Whoa... now just a minute. We only had one girl in the club. (that I can remember) So if your above statement is true, did that make us all Adam & Steve? Eww. I prefer the Adam & Eve theory, thankyouverymuch.

Oh, my. What your day job, again?

 ;D

Rick, I've had that VW Trends issue since they sent me a bunch of 'em after they did that article on our clubs. And to this day, I can't remember that girl's name/car or anything regarding another girl in the club. But then again... I'm an old fart, these days and just happy to be still surfing and skateboarding. Can't remember too much other than what I ate.

Ya I remember her not being active for too much longer after we joined. Just remember that the car was a 62-65 brown maybe metallic with chromies and caps. I also remember that she was fairly petite. Other than that nothing.

Dave Smith... I knew it was a simple name, like that... thanks! Jeffrey, does anybody remember that girl's name? It would be really cool to get a hold of her. I gotta go take my girlfriend out for her birthday, right now, but I'll break out the old club address lists and see if there are any other girls' names on there when I get back home, tonight.

Carey is a guy

I was afraid of that. Being a unisex name and all. I'll keep looking at the lists.

(sigh)

Carey is hooked up with me on Face Book.  He lives out at the river.  Still into SPEED!!  He absolutely is a GUY!!  Fred, go and see if you can check out his boat.  He's CRAZY!!  I've been bugging him to come play with us.  It sure would be fun if he ever showed his face  : )
