Title: DKP 1 in Pennsylvania
Post by: javabug on May 14, 2009, 02:42:54 am
Not sure what you did this morning, but I had the immense pleasure of spending a few hours with John Lazenby today.  John was en route to an off-brand meeting and I managed to intercept his flight.  Super-rockstar Mike Maize even joined in on the fun and came down to my turf for the occasion.  We met John for breakfast and proceeded to occupy a good two-plus hours with excellent conversation, stories of the old days, and plans for the new days.

It is no wonder DKP I made such an impact on the scene we all love, having people like John involved from the beginning.  Today goes down in history as one of the high points in my air-cooled VW life.

John being a nice guy and checking out the Java Bug:

Rockstar Maize and John (Mike's not on the phone, he just can't believe what's going on):

Right before I geeked out and asked John to sign my Cal-look book:

Watch this space, John probably won't be near a computer until next week.  Maybe we'll get his perspective then.

I'll tell you, I couldn't be more glad that I made the drive down there. John is the kind of guy I would feel lucky to meet even if he was not into VW's. Combine that fact with the truth that he was there from the beginning of everything we are into and its not hard to see how special the time was for Java and I. Time flew by and even the waitress was cool about how long we sat there and exchanged stories. I love that John is mystified by his celebrity status....one more unforgettable Cal-look experience! Thanks for breakfast John, I am buying next time I get out west ;) I don't know whats up with this rock star thing?????? ::)

What can I say about all of this.  It is Friday night and Javabug Mike and I are here together at a hotel in Lancaster, PA looking at Chrysler 300's.  I'm blow away by the reception he and Mike Maize gave me on Wednesday morning.  It made my trip worth while.

We intend to enjoy the remainder of the evening and I'll be off to the 300 Show tomorrow and then home on Sunday to finally start a build for the '63 motor.  Any suggestions as to what size????

As big as you see fit. After all... it IS your name on the registration to that good lookin' black '63. Glad that you're having a good time back east. Hope to see you at the Classic, next month.

Engine size... Depends if you're stuck on vintage like most of us, or smart enough to not care!

I'm totaly honored that you feel that way about my previous '63.  That car was really a big part of me and I think I've already stated that in previous post.

I've now returned to So-Cal after a great time in Lancaster, PA.  A big part of that was due to the two locals that took time from their schedules to come and visit with me.  As stated below I'm blown away that someone would make a long drive to see an old guy like myself.  It is guys like you two that are my inspiration to get back into the VW world.

Java came over to the 300 host Hotel on Friday evening and stayed until about midnight.  We shared stories and I introduced him to the world of Letter Cars.  I think he appreciated the history and engineering of the mark.

My hope is that both of these guys will come west in the future and I can share my toys with them.  We can take a high speed ride with some weight behind us............... ::) ::) ::) ::)

Hey John, I am glad you had a good time in PA! I wish we had time to get you into some more of our scene here. I have been wanting to come out for one of the big shows for a while now, it has been years. Build your self a nice 2110 or 2276 with IDA's you know you deserve it... ;)

John,

Stroke it.  After blowing up my first 66 VW motor in 1971, I jumped to a 74mm stroke and 92s. In later years, the 82mm stroke became a favorite.  Dean Lowry used to tell us buy as much cubic inches as you can afford. So, I went big and never turned back.  With all  the parts available, you can build a driveable big engine...kill it on cruise nights and still drive home.

Glad to see you moving back into the hobby.  There are a lot of us gray hairs in HOt VWs.

Hey Lee, My friend John has it in a 68. It's cool it has Venolia slipper skirt 88's and some cool ported stock valved heads. They are topped off with solex 40 P11's on old "Genes" manifolds. Got wicked sound to it....I am sure you would dig it.
