Title: Who ate all the pies
Post by: gyles on June 08, 2009, 10:18:28 am
I can't help it, I like pies.
I like all pies, so can never decide which filling to go for, whether to have a full on crust or a poncy puff pastry lid, cold pie with that nice jelly or hot pie with gravy.
Any advice from other loungers?
Please tell me I'm not alone in my pie fantasy world :o

Good call.  Pizza IS a pie.  Altho a little north of here, it comes in "trays."   ::)

Isn't there a song with pizza pie in the lyric's

"When the moon hits your eyes, like a big-a pizza pie, that's amore" ;)

System Of A Down also has it in one of their songs, a bit more on the hardcore side though!

Now, being an adopted Cornishman and not true blood I got it wrong  :-[.  I had been of the impression that a pasty was indeed a pie.  I had been thinking that a good proper steak pasty (NEVER try to palm me off with that ginsters shit >:( >:( >:() was fulfilling my daily pie needs.  Bridget (the missus) has corrected me quite firmly that a pasty is a pasty and in no way related to a pie.  She is proper Cornish so I suppose she should know ???.

Pizza is a pie. I'll take some of that :)

She (the missus) is however not Italian, but she still insists pizza is not a pie either.  Thats another one off the list despite my protestations of what about the song 'when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie' >:(

But what about those folded pizzas.  You know, the Calzone things.  Now thats gotta be a pie.  I really like the calzone ;D especially the ones full of ham, mozzarella and spinach.   :D :D

Cornish pasty

a piece of pastry baked with a mixture of meat and vegetables inside it, usually for one person to eat

pizza

a large circle of flat bread baked with cheese, tomatoes, and sometimes meat and vegetables spread on top

pie

a type of food made with meat, vegetables or fruit covered in pastry and baked

hope this clears it up,  ::)

So by your definition then a pumpkin or banana cream pie wouldn't be a pie because it's not covered??  ???  ;D

now I know this one.  Surely a flan is NOT a pie.  Its just some old sponge cake with cold fruit in jelly on the top :-\ ???.
On a related pie theme I have discovered there is such a thing as a pasty pie.  This is basically the filling from a pasty but baked in a pie dish with a crust under and over it.  My kinda pie ;D ;D

A pie is a baked dish which is usually made of a pastry dough shell that covers or completely contains a filling of various sweet or savoury ingredients.

Apparently:  "A pasty, less commonly known as the tiddly oggie or tiddy oggie or sometimes Pastie in the US (cos they can't spell proper like), is a crescent shaped filled pastry case commonly associated with the county of Cornwall in the UK.  It differs from a pie as it is made by placing the filling on a flat shape of pastry, usually a circle, and folding it to wrap the filling forming a raised semi-circular package.  The traditional Cornish Pasty is filled with beef, sliced potato turnip and onion and then baked."
So it's not like a pie at all then! :-\

I seem to have got to this topic fairly late, however:

I ATE ALL THE PIES

Gyles, if you needed pie assistannce you KNOW you shhould have called me.

You can't beat a cold steak and kidney pie, but a close second is probably a Wrights meat and potato pie (hot).

On the pasty front, there's a really good Pasty shop in Perranporth which does steak and stilton and its top drawer, the best I've had in Cornwall (and I've had a few hahaha). Unless you want to prove me wrong Mark and send me a sample up of your local's finest?

By the way, a new batch of potato wine has been completed - let me know if you're heading up to Bug Jam you can come over and sample some.

Of course, of course.  I should have thought that you were a pie lover.  Silly me .
I live a stones throw from Perranporth so I could pop down and carry out a quick quality control check ;) Which particular shop was that ???

Bug Jam.  Hmmm.  I am working on a pass out for the weekend (need to get a decent pb :-[) so keep that wine close to hand.  Good shit man ;D

Let me know if you want a space on our club camping gyles.... saves camping with the nobs. Well, you'll still be with nobs, but at least they'll be nobs you know! hahaha...

The one in Perrnaporth is on the beach side of the high street, just before the far end pedestrian crossing. Give them a whirl!

Hmm, Farming... it's an ideal way to tie up all your cash in assets you only need to use once or twice a year and land that everyone else seems to have an opinion on how you should farm.  You get free time at all the wrong times, like when all your family and friends are at work, the long dark winter evenings or when the tourist destinations are closed.  You get to do some of the worst jobs in the world, like shovelling shit, sweeping dusty grain stores or having your arm up a cows arse.  You get up early, go to bed late, have an overdraft bigger than the QE2 and smell like a pigs crotch.  But would I do anything different.... :-\ ???  That would depend on what career you have to swap me with ;)

Anyway, back on topic.... I have just remembered years ago eating a pie which was a thick crust, really pink looking cured pork and an egg in the middle.  Cold!  It was lovely, but can I remember what it was called ???

An Egg & Pork pie?

 :D

Some people pay good money to shove their hands up arses, so try to think of the positives... hahaha....

Gala Pie - like a pork pie with an egg in the middle. Usualy bigger, square or rectangular, served in slices rather than wedges. I'll get me coat... ::) :)
