Title: New oil leak
Post by: Tony M on June 22, 2009, 22:45:57 pm
This one just started up, but i cant figure why? I now have oil comming up between my dist and case - not inside my dist. but right under the clamp. i have pulled my dist. out, replaced the o-ring and put a bead of silicone around the dist clamp to the case. I did find a good amount of oil on top of the dist drive. I let it dry for a day or two, the go out for a buzz and oil pumping out again. This is one area where there is no real pressure problems. Has any one ever seen a case crack into the dist/drive area ? Any info would be a help.

 Thanks Tony

Is it still doing it after replacing the o-ring.  What kind of breather system do you have?  Perhaps it is building crankcase pressure that is causing that.  Does oil show up anywhere else like around the dip stick?

Nope - dry on the dip stick - using an empi breather from v/covers and oil filler - had all 3 off last time driving - was thinking the same thing - made no diffenence.

you are sure its vented to the atmosphere?  Had a friend who fitted all the breather tubes but not an air filter so the crankcase pressure just built up and oil came out of the dizzy.

Have been using the same breather system for years now with no problems - This just came out of the blue.

It sounds like it is coming from behind the pulley or maybe the fuel pump or fuel pump block off.  Hit the case with brake cleaner and try investigating some more.  Keep us posted.

It is comming from under dist. clamp - have cleaned it many times and resealed many times - still from under dist clamp  >:(

If you know it is coming from that point then maybe it is the seal.  There are a few different seals out there-one with the "v" like the photos in the link and the other with the round sides

It may be a good idea to get an OE or Bosch seal and give it a try.  Slide the clamp on the distributor first them the o-ring, then maybe grease the oring and install.

If that does not work maybe someone else may have a suggestion for you.

Has the engine taken any kind of a hit to the distributor or front of the case?
There are a few oil galleys in the area, pull the distributor and inspect the inside bore for any cracks.

You may want to contact Glenn Ring who posted that photo to see if he has any for sale.  I had a hard time locating a non round one as well.  Good luck.
