Title: My '56 Oval - None more black Post by: bodgit on June 25, 2009, 16:13:06 pm Been semi-lurking on here for ages now watching everyone elses projects, figured it was about time I posted up pics of mine (with a little bit of encouraging from certain parties ;)).
Here's how I got the car in 2004, a reasonably solid 1956 (November 1955) RHD Oval that was originally a South African CKD car imported over to the UK in about 2003 or thereabouts: (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/399622868bace042389f85978422b5260e1.jpg) The car has since been stripped and shipped off to the boys at The Paintbox where the body has been acid dipped before having any problem areas fixed with the standard collection of repair panels from the likes of Wolf Parts, Auto Craft Engineering and Hooky's Panel Shop. New floorpan halves have replaced the crusty originals. It's been to Chris Isaacs Race Cars and now sports a six-point chrome-moly rollcage. Here's some spy shots of how it's currently looking in paint: (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/250609014.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/250609012.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/250609006.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/250609007.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/250609013.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/250609011.jpg) Transmission is a solid-mounted Berg 5-speed along with a Quaife diff. Engine is from Ian Clark at WPS and the planned spec is a 2387cc with 48 IDA's, FK-89 + straight cuts, magneto etc., all the good stuff and a reasonable upgrade over the pokey 1200 ;D. I think that's covered all of it for now. Matt Title: Re: My '56 Oval - None more black Post by: benssp on June 25, 2009, 16:50:20 pm nice one Mr Dainty, Si sent me some pics this morning ;D

Title: Re: My '56 Oval - None more black Post by: bodgit on June 27, 2009, 13:16:13 pm Ok, I've dug through my photos so here's quite few more "in betweens" to fill in the gaps:
Here's the car after I'd stripped most of the paint off (Nitromors! It burnses! Burnses us it does!) and covered it up with Halfords rattle-can primer, note those lovely white patches in the rear valance, full of filler :-\ (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0003.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0005.jpg) The body went off to Surface Processing Ltd (http://"http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/") to be acid-dipped and coated. The great thing about this is the good bits of the body look brand new, unfortunately it will find and highlight everything wrong too, including a horrible repair to the one rear quarter that I hadn't found when stripping the paint off. You can also see the daylight creeping in through the heater channels. (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0014.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0013.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0012.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0016.jpg) Meanwhile on the floorpan front, apart from my crusty & botched 'pan halves that had that lovely pop to them when you put your foot in the right/wrong place, the tunnel had gone in some strange places so it that was opened up to find oodles of grease and muck inside. The theory being something must have been rattling around so grease was pumped in there until the rattling stopped ::) Apart from the grease, there was the trim from my horn push and various units of south african currency (No Krugerrand). Cable conduits that would no longer be needed were removed and everything painted before sealing it back up again. The front mount for the 5-speed was also welded between the frame horns. (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/270908001.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/270908007.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/270908010.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/270908011.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/270908004.jpg) On the body, the heater channels needed replacing (you can see from the cutout section how bad they were), lower door pillars, front inner wing, front valance, rear valance (which has been made removable), spare wheel area, rear bumper mounts. Shane also properly re-repaired the rear quarter. As there won't be any heating, the various holes and pipes have been filled in and removed. In order to clear the 5-speed, the rear floor has had a hump added. (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0021.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0019.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0026.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0024.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0027.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0040.jpg) They also started to fill in my trim holes :'( (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0029.jpg) (although I must admit it does look better without it) Off to Chris Isaacs Race Cars (http://"http://www.chris-isaacs.com/") for the rollcage where it shared a stable with Pas' Oval for a couple of weeks ;) I think my only request was that I could still open the glove box, and wind the windows down without needing to open the door first. (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/600_matt-d1.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/600_matt-d2.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/600_matt-d4.jpg) After a few more small repairs here and there it's mostly priming and sanding everything down prior to being painted. (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0041.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/280209002.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0044.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/280209001.jpg) Apart from the body which is gloss, the floorpan and rollcage have been painted satin black. (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0087.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0090.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0091.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/IMG_0092.jpg) (http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/matt_dainty/May2009005.jpg) I think that's it, unless I can find any more stashes of photos somewhere. Title: Re: My '56 Oval - None more black Post by: nigelg65 on June 27, 2009, 13:37:19 pm Saw this one a few weeks ago when I dropped my Oval off at the Paintbox for a makeover. Very nice car indeed.

The Paintbox does it again!! Title: Re: My '56 Oval - None more black Post by: Nico86 on July 03, 2009, 16:04:01 pm Great job ! 8)

Yeah, I guess I am ;D I haven't driven it for about four years, almost forgotten it's actually a car and not a money pit that sits in a garage somewhere and eats into my bank account. It should (fingers crossed) be done in the next month or two, that's the plan. It was something a bit different and as you say "old style" :) I liked the photo you took in the picture thread too. Matt Title: Re: My '56 Oval - None more black Post by: 63 ripper on April 01, 2010, 09:03:18 am cool photos...love the engine details.
are you doing something different for your breather set-up as i noticed your oil lines are quite large ? Title: Re: My '56 Oval - None more black Post by: bodgit on April 01, 2010, 14:15:32 pm cool photos...love the engine details. are you doing something different for your breather set-up as i noticed your oil lines are quite large ? There's a big ol' breather box underneath along with the external oil cooler. You can see the two lines run from the magneto bracket and oil filler, then underneath, both rocker covers and the gearbox are also hooked up. I'll see if I can grab a photo. I really think the guy's at planet paintbox deserve to be bigged up a bit more for the attention to detail! love the berg 5 bulge! others that get close seem to get all the hype at the moment, whereas PlanetPB have been doing it relatively quietly for decades! (Si, I only said 'relatively quietly'!!! You are all still punk rock!! ;D)

......Eleven!!! Title: Re: My '56 Oval - None more black Post by: bodgit on April 03, 2010, 20:13:41 pm I hope the tach goes to..... ......Eleven!!! I'm embarrassed to say it doesn't, I did have a look for one and most of the 5" Autometer ones are the fancy playback models and/or wouldn't suit the car. I'll just have to settle for leaving 11's on the road ;D Matt Title: Re: My '56 Oval - None more black Post by: Pas on April 06, 2010, 23:39:34 pm It was great to see the car finished and looking so tough Matt.
