Title: Nigel's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 07, 2009, 08:29:38 am So there I was with a couple of mate's at EBI 2. Sat around a campfire, beers in hand wondering what to do with my Oval. Well there were so many great cars to look at and so many details to be inspired by at the show that we got to throwing some ideas around and the plan came together.
A year later and the car is now at the Paintbox and the work has started. It's mostly detailing and it's starting to look good. Below are pics of the car before we started and the first work-in-progress shots. www.type-magazine.com Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 07, 2009, 08:31:37 am More pics of where we were before we started...

Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 07, 2009, 08:38:17 am As I'm fitting American Racing five-spokes there is a possibility the 4.5in and deep six Fuchs will be up for sale. With or without tyres. Flat Four 4.5in spare as well.
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: bodgit on July 07, 2009, 08:50:59 am An Oval at The Paintbox? You're in safe hands there methinks ;)
Will be interesting to see how it ends up looking, it looked pretty good when you dropped it off. Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 07, 2009, 09:16:25 am Well, the plan for the car is fun so it'll be interesting to see it when all the parts come together.
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: norm on July 07, 2009, 22:36:58 pm looked nice before, although those new wheels are spot on!
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 08, 2009, 08:15:24 am Cheers Norm,
It did look nice before but it's time to move on and change things up a bit. Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 09, 2009, 21:17:23 pm CSP exhaust fitted: needed a little fettling from the Paintbox but looks just like it should now.

Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 20, 2009, 23:03:45 pm So it's been a week or two since the last update so here are a couple of pics showing what's been going on.
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 21, 2009, 22:49:59 pm And now it's starting to get more interesting...
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 21, 2009, 23:24:31 pm Now that I have decided to go with the American Racings wheels I might have these up for sale by the end of the week.
Ansen slot mags; 7x15; 5.5x15 on a 5x130 Porsche pattern. They look so good I don't think they have ever seen a car!! Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: Paul Reveres Ghia on July 23, 2009, 20:34:47 pm whatchin this should be fun- not sure I'm loving those nasty BFG's though- Can't you get something a little more retro looking???
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 24, 2009, 09:27:51 am Hard to find white letter radials in the size I needed. I want to be able to drive the car and trust it so am not going to bias plys.
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: Paul Reveres Ghia on July 26, 2009, 12:55:33 pm Hard to find white letter radials in the size I needed. I want to be able to drive the car and trust it so am not going to bias plys. I was thinking of firestones but I see the f560's only go to 165 which I guess is a bit too narrow- what about Good Year? I seem to remember them making a 195 or 205 with a 70 profile??? May be history by now though as that was a few years ago!! Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 26, 2009, 18:50:10 pm Nope can't find any radial white letters tyres by those guys in the size I want.
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: Paul Reveres Ghia on July 26, 2009, 19:42:01 pm Simon found me some lovely fulda's a while ago as well- they were 195's if I recall correctly, had quite a nice retro shape to the sidewalls- Ah well, I'm sure my tyre obsession isn't going to make or break your project- Si may also remember the tyres they had fitted to my Ghia's wheels and my absolute obsession about getting the 'E' of Bridgestone lined up with the valves and top spoke of the wheels- Not a problem on a show car but as mine is more of a patina'd vehicle it could be seen as a little odd!(I am sure he just thinks i am a pain in the ass!!!)
Look forward to seeing some more updates soon- Please don't think I am being negative, just trying to help ;) Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: Muroc on July 28, 2009, 14:12:58 pm looked nice before, although those new wheels are spot on! yeah right, it was a nice cal look....RIP ;) Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on July 28, 2009, 20:52:55 pm Oh dear someone doesn't like my car. Cheers madfrog Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on October 14, 2010, 17:06:28 pm I know it's a bit early but am starting to sort my car out for next year's Euro Bug-In. Apart from a bit of engine work I'm thinking of adding to the paint, but am not sure which way to go. I still want to retain the '70s vibe so any suggestions gratefully received.
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: jick on October 14, 2010, 20:43:38 pm If it was mine I'd be tempted to get the interior all tied in to the theme of the car,
how about getting a really nice red 60's/70's style flowery or paisley pattern cloth, there was a blue (Japanese?) car recently in Ultra or Volksworld with that style interior and it looked ace..... Cheers Jick Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: fredy66 on October 15, 2010, 12:18:50 pm love it man
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on November 16, 2010, 09:37:50 am The car is now at the Paintbox and will get a whole load more signwriting this Friday/Saturday.
Should have a few more pics soon and the full story will be going in issue no.3 of Type magazine out early 2011. Check out our brand new website at www.type-magazine.com Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: vwcab on November 16, 2010, 10:08:45 am Cool, let the pics come. (..........and #3 :D )
;) Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on November 24, 2010, 18:57:35 pm Well the car's been with the Paintbox, Prosign and Phil of the West for a few weeks now and things have moved fast. Phil has now got the engine on song and Neil M spent a long weekend on the paint.
Here's a taster pic of what he's been up to. The car will have a full feature in the next issue of Type magazine. If you haven't heard of us yet go to www.type-magazine.com and see what we've been up to. Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: Zach Gomulka on November 24, 2010, 23:39:18 pm Looks very similar to the old Super Bee logo ;)
Are you going to do anything interior-wise? Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on November 25, 2010, 09:21:23 am Z,
Muscle cars are a big influence on me so you're dead right the Super Bee logo was a real inspiration. There is a whole load more signwriting which you can't see in this pic, more posts to come. Interior will probably stay as it is for now. We are going to have a big summer of shows, particularly in Europe, 2011 which means most of next year's 'car money' will be going on ferry tickets, fuel and BBQs. Roll on Euro Bug-In. www.type-magazine.com Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on January 20, 2011, 19:44:32 pm Just saw this on Julian's site. Best picture of it so far
Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on May 01, 2011, 15:28:46 pm Well at long last the car is finished... well as finished as they ever are.
And the full story is in the new issue of Type magazine. All the trials, tribulations and breakdowns I can remember!! www.type-magazine.com Title: Re: Type magazine's '56 Oval Post by: Martin on May 01, 2011, 18:54:44 pm its a crackin read! not put my copy down yet ;)
Title: Re: Nigel's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on December 13, 2013, 13:00:49 pm A reminder of sunnier days - May 2013, Lincs Vales, UK.
Title: Re: Nigel's '56 Oval Post by: Shane Noone on December 13, 2013, 13:29:44 pm Hey Nigel,
Cool ride, still love it. Can't remember was this same oval without signwriting that was on fuchs some years back ? Are you still hoping to sell her or keeping now for another season ? Be really ace mate if you bring her along to UK Cal Look Drag Day at Shakey next June ;D Cheers, Shane. Title: Re: Nigel's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on December 13, 2013, 13:32:58 pm Yes it is the same Oval that was on Fuchs (which I still have and am thinking about selling if any one is interested: OG 4.5s and Deep 6s). Have decided not to sell the car, this one is a keeper. To my shame I didn't do one VW show in 2013. My plan is to do a lot in 2014 to make up for it.
Title: Re: Nigel's '56 Oval Post by: Peter on December 13, 2013, 13:41:52 pm That was the car I wanted to buy as my first bug, but my mother wouldnt let me at the time :)
I liked it more in the previous guise... It was cleaner back then :-\ but of course its your car :) Title: Re: Nigel's '56 Oval Post by: nigelg65 on December 13, 2013, 15:06:45 pm Glad you liked it Peter. Yep it certainly was cleaner back then.
