Ok guys, I got a problem here. I'm cranking my new 1915 for oil pressure. As soon as the green light goes out I hear a puff from the engine and it is leaking oil. It comes from between the oil cooler and adapter (doghouse). I removed the oil cooler and put in new gaskets. Same problem again. Than I checked the oil relief valves.  The one near the flywheel drops out easily but the one near the pulley was stuck. I think this is the problem? I tried to sand it down and it moved easier. Tried again and still the same problem (puffing and leaking).

Anybody knows what I need to do to fix this? Just had some setbacks with my new engine I'm at the point of givin up.  :'(

are you using the right seals?  are you sure its not the cooler? if the Valve was Stuck it could have split a seam in the cooler? from to much pressure also check the  castining for cracks? is it a VW or aftermarket adapter?

The seals between oil cooler and adaptor should look like these. I've blown apart probably a dozen coolers in my VW life, and I'm sure more are to come. It does make a funny noise when it happens. Like Shuubbee said, if you wing the motor cold with a stuck valve (or if you have super high tension bypass springs) it will blow the cooler for sure. Run it w/o the fan housing and see where the leak is coming from. Spray the area clean with aerosol solvent first.  Happens to everybody dude... don't feel bad.

I have found that if your using an aftermarket cooler adapter the seal mountings are cut a little deeper than OEM.  Also different gasket sets have different seal sizes.  I'm not talking about the really fat ones but like the ones pictured above.  They range in size from .130 to .160 in thickness on the outer part.  You need to mearsure the outer thickness and use the fatter ones even in an OEM adapter.  I have had some leaks and that's when I measured them and found different sizes in different kits.  They look all the same till you measure them.  I showed John Rayburn and he couldn't believe it. The correct size to use is .160     After I discovered the differences I have not had any more leaking. You must check!!!  I hope it's the seals and not the cooler.     Good luck

Thanks guys, so I use these orange seals between the cooler and adapter and which ones between the adapter and the case than? Also these types?

The same ones, but you can get away with the thinner ones between the cooler and adpter.  I always use the .160  everywhere so no leaks.   Good luck               Dave Rhoads
