Title: 66 Driver Status
Post by: OgCalLook on August 11, 2009, 03:58:50 am
I figured its time to post up some info on my 66.....

I haven't been on this site very long, but been into VWs since I was 15 - here's my intro thread.

http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,8287.msg126109.html#msg126109 (http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,8287.msg126109.html#msg126109)

Bought the car about 3 years ago, finally picked it up from storage in Kansas 1 year ago.

The original owner bought it in 66 and drove it until 1984, when he became to old to drive.
He finally sold it to the 2nd owner in 1991, the 2nd owner never registered it and he put limited miles on it.
He also put a 74 Ghia motor in it, along with drop spindles and Empis'

Bought it sight unseen from these pics.....

Fast forward to 2008 - the car gets dragged to Denver and back to driver status.
I'm now the second registered owner of the car.

Complete og 55K mile, paint and interior car. Drives nice and tight, no rust any where, even under the battery.

the rear fenders and decklid have been re-sprayed, but the rest is og.....

ditched the 5 spokes - just wasn't feeling it, for freshly powder coated 356s (not feeling the rack either)

Took off the rack, Bolted up a Quiet pack, 019, got rid of the POS 34pict3 for a 30pict1, tune up and valve adjust.
Actually runs good for a 60K mile 1600dp.

Got a vert lid hangin' on the wall....

Driving the car, and spending time sorting the car, new shifter bushing and a berg shifter.
Checking out shows/GTGs

After 2-3 orders from Wolfsburg West, all the little stuff is getting addressed -

Its been sitting for 24+ years, running better and better the more I drive it.

I used EZ off oven cleaner to remove 2 coats of paint on the decklid, got down to the original Bahama Blau paint.

Time to lose the bumpers.....

Yes, "Amazonas" Green from the factory - Doorcards are factory!
I've never seen one in person either, and only seen pics of 2 other cars - must be rare?

It has white dealer seat covers on it right now, but I'll post some pics of the og seats shortly.

Very cool car!! What does the future hold for it??

Title: Re: 66 Driver Status
Post by: OgCalLook on August 11, 2009, 18:58:17 pm
thanks Louis.
Zach - The whole idea with this one is to keep it a driver, improve it as I drive it.

The current motor (74 1600) only has 60k on it and never been opened up, runs strong but is burning oil (prob valve guides - has good compression)
Eventual plan for this motor is a 2176 (78.4 x 94)

But right now I'm building a 1914 - actually picking up the machine work today.
Demello C/W crank 10/10
W-120
Tims stage 2
c/r will be set at 9:1
1-5/8 merged
Rotating assy dynamically balanced
Oil gallerys drill & tapped
Full Flowed/berg sump
IDAs

When its built - it'll be a weekend swap - so I can keep it on the road.

I've got 3 dual side cover IRS transaxles, so when I get a box built, It'll be a quick swap also, then just need to weld in a mid mount.

Other than that, Some day I'll re-do the interior to original specs.

Sounds almost exactly like the motor we're building for AssHull's '67. Keep this thread updated ;)

Hey Sam - I'm ready to build it, I have everything but the straight cuts, pushrod tubes, and solid rocker shafts.
If the cam gears get here by Friday I'll long block it this weekend. 8)

I think that I have a set of merged daul QP's in the garage if you're interested.

Bugpack makes a Dual QP setup to fit their header as well. Its what I plan to run on my 2332.

Ok interior shots....

After 43 years, the interior is pretty tired, the cloth is pretty faded and hammered, If you look at the chart posted earlier you can see what it should look like.
Once I get the mechanicals sorted, I think I'll call Lenny Copp, and see if he can source it.

Yeah - I'm always amazed with Volkswagen's color combos.

It'll pop with a fresh Interior, someday $$$

Thanks Mark, I was thinking about straight green vinyl, but like you said its a "unique" interior, so it will get done OEM.

If we can, For sure, but I'll leave that up to the trim guy.

The door panels are nice, maybe just re-glue the driver door.
New Headliner, and new square weave rugs.

1914 is a great engine, Tom. I have one in my car and its a blast to drive. So what are your complete engine specs?

DMS C/W crank
120 cam
CB straight cut cam gears
26mm Shadeck pump
311b VW rods torqued to 30lbs
M12 Case studs torqued to 30lbs
12lb 6 volt 200mm flywheel
10mm stock head studs

Rotating assembly dynamically balanced

94mm Mahle P&C
Tims stage 2 ported 043s Heads (42x37.5) 53cc
Big Beef match ported intakes
.050" deck 9.0 to 1 CR
Manton cm pushrods
CB solid rocker shafts
Stock 1.1 rockers (for now)
Berg Full flow & 1.5 sump
Berg breather, Vented Valve Covers
Berg carb linkage
ALL GERMAN COOLING TIN...!!
1-5/8 ceramic coated merged header
48 IDAs 37mm vents

Not too worried about top end with the tims' heads, (Intakes flow 190CFM @ 25")
but I do want decent torque, so I went with non-welded ports, tall manifolds and 37mm chokes, It should make good port velocity.

Its short blocked now, gonna set the deck height next :)

If you plan on upgrading to 1.25's, just do it now. No sense in doing geometry twice! Looks exactly like AssHull's motor, except your heads are better. Should be a runner!

Thanks Mike! 145/165 on 4.5" 356s.
Thinking about 155/60s on the front  & 185/65s on the rear - something a little stiffer - I tend to drive a little fast ;D

Title: Re: 66 Driver Status
Post by: Fritter on October 18, 2009, 21:33:40 pm
Cool. What brand and model of tires are they? I had 145 and 165 coker xzx's on my old '65 and they were great but I'm looking for a cheaper option for the same sizes for my current '64 project.

Title: Re: 66 Driver Status
Post by: OgCalLook on October 18, 2009, 21:47:16 pm
the 165s are old XZXs from the 80s-90s (good tread but a little weather checked) - which reminds me I need to swap them, before I kill myself.
the 145s are run of the mill nankangs.

I'm seriously considering the Conti's

Title: Re: 66 Driver Status
Post by: lawrence on October 19, 2009, 18:51:43 pm
I like the 185/65 Contiprocontacts that i have on my car. Tom, I bet the 155/60s would not look good because they have a small diameter and are more suited to the hoodride/airbag cars. 175/65s would probably look much better as they are almost identical to 145s but wider.

Title: Re: 66 Driver Status
Post by: OgCalLook on October 19, 2009, 21:18:11 pm
I hear ya, I still like the big and little setup. Do your 185/65s fit the 4.5 rim ok? bulge?

155/60s are 22.3" according to - http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp - and I would have to lower the front some more.

I think I'll start with 185/65s on the back since the ZXZs have seen better days, and keep it open for the fronts.

Heres follow Lounger "allmenplayon10"s car with 145/65s but he's sitting pretty low, this is why I was thinking 155s might fit "straight" on the 4.5 with no bulge.

Title: Re: 66 Driver Status
Post by: Zach Gomulka on October 19, 2009, 22:15:50 pm
How about the Vredesteins in 155's for the front, and 185/70 for the rear? The 185/65 is a bit short, IMO, and the 185/70 is about the same height as a 165. I normally don't like the look of those tires, but I think the sizes would work perfectly on your car, and the tread would match front to rear. They would fit 4.5's and 5.5's beautifully.

Yeah 185/70s would be my preference, (rear wheels are 4.5s - they have 1" more offset than the fronts ) so I think a 185 is as large as I should go.

Is this where you were thinking? (Nice but pricey) http://www.lucasclassictires.com/RADIALS070609.htm

Wow - Its been over a year since I posted last......
I'm in Commercial construction, so 2009 was dead (no $$) This year we're slammed (no time) ;D

As the thread title says "Driver Status" so I drove it all last year, hit all the local shows.

Got the funds now, so with winter here, its time to get the new motor running.

^^^ that was pull #2

- Pull #1 was 150 mains, pull 2 we tried fattin' it up a little with 155s, but it was too much....

went back to 150s and got 134 whp @ 5900 rpm

not bad for 9 to 1 & pump gas.  Oh and I used and old 019 & "floater" points  ;D

Cool engine and good job, Tom. I remember the first time that I saw your car on The Lounge and noticed the rear wheels and their offset... but please refresh my memory; why do they differ from the fronts, again? Are both sets aftermarket or factory?

Thanks Mark, Havin' a blast with it. Won't be long until I break the trans ;D

Fronts: KPZ "1585" 4.5x15 356 wheels

Rear:  Lemmertz "1555" 4.5x15 356 wheels - They have 1" more positive offset than the 1585's

I don't know what the original application was.

Tom, small favour? I have a cab deck lid for mine, which I think is slightly earlier than a 66 lid as it still has the T-handle hole rather than the push button catch and a second skin on the inside. It is however the latter style semi w shape but has had holes drilled for a popes nose rather than than a later number plate light. The later holes have been brazed up. If you have a picture of the inside of the lid would you mind popping it up so I can see what it should look like as I need to fake this one so it is correct? Thanks Alex

Alex - Not a very good pic, but I had it already on the hard drive,
I can shoot another in the daylight later this week, if you want.

perfect, I have a late semi w cab deck lid with an early t handle catch. I need to fake in the push button latch. Just wanted to check it is all the same as the standard one. Thanks for that.

On the decklids, 58-63 is the same, 64 the center of the "W" was shortened, and then in 65 the push button latch was introduced.

yes, thats what I gather, the car is a '66, but the lid I have is a '64. This isn't to much of a problem as I can easily modify it to the push button latch when i find a suitable doner lid for the recess, anyway enough highjacking, thanks for the clarification.

Don't know if you've ever looked at the Restowagen site, but there's a bit on this resto thread discussing Karmann decklids.

It starts about 1/3 of the way down the page - worth a read as there's some bits I didn't know about different year lids.

Took Zach's advise and got some Vredestein Sprint Classics 185/70/15s
Hard to see, but they fill the wheel well out nicely!

Great choice. I like that size. How does the rear end feel when going through corners in a spirited manner? I have 185/65s and I really like how it handles.

I scrolled back up the page and I actually dig the 165s more. I bet that 1914 made 'em scratch.

Don't know if I can tell the difference or not, I like having a taller tire, and its nice having current tires (those XZXs were old)

What made a Huge difference is, I finally installed a pair of caster shims, its now stable at a 100mph ;D

This is so sweet Tom. I love it. I have a real thing for Bahama Blue Lookers as I always felt I got mine spot on, hope you don't mind me posting pics of mine on your thread. Selling it was a real wrench but wife (honeymoon) & baby meant I could no longer afford to play with my toys. :(

P.S. I love the steelies. Really sets its off.

Great looking car Rich! you DID get it spot on!
Post more pics - Love Bahama blue.

Buy a beater, so at least you have something to drive on the weekends.
I keep this one "Driver Status" because I have 2 oval projects in various stages, and I can always jump in the 66 and go for a cruise.
