My DKP II jacket is a "Mr Legg's", the DKP III is a "Port Authority"...

Richard, maybe you have a "one-off"... you sure you didn't have that made just for you ;)??

The first generation jackets were Peters... it was all we could afford.  Having a London Fog in the'60's required $$$$

Mark,
I obtained the jacket from an ex-club member. definitely not a "fake".
I have quite a large DKP collection, hats, sweatshirts, t-shirts, rally plaques, decals, hood badges, pins, etc., all from different club members over the years spanning DKP I,II,andIII.
Don't worry, I have no intention of posing as a member or decorating my car with the items.
Just a collection of a club I admire that will remain in my basement.
:-)

Here is a bit of history on the "original DKP Burgundy Jackets".  I worked at a tradiational mens clothing store, Howard Still's in the Broadway Center in Anaheim.  We carried the "Peters and London Fog Brands".  I sold most of the first jackets to club members.  The first batch as I remember were the Peters brand and then that company discontinued the burgundy color.  At that time we were able to get the London Fog brand, but the color was a bit different with a less solid color.

The Fogs were actually a better quality product, but didn't have the look of the Peters, thus the Peters brand was everyone's first choice.  As I recall these jackets were in the $14 to $18 range which was a good amount of money back in the day.  To put the cost into prespective Gant long sleeve oxford button down shirts were about $5 and American Made.  Corbin slacks (I still wear them today) were about $20 (today well over $125) and last were "British Walker Shell Corodvan leather Saddle Shoes.  If you are not knowledgeable with "Shell Corodvan" leather it won't crack where your toes bend, but will roll.  These shoes were about $32 back in then and today would probably be close to $500 if you could buy them.  These were all items a lot of the members wore in the day as we took pride in our appearance unlike what I see in the youth of today.

So the question is, what is an original DKP jacket worth today?  My answer would be "PRICELESS".

definitely, I love to come on here to see these fantastic items, the stuff you only see in books is brought to life by John, and many others who were there when it was all happening and like to recall tales of the old days. DKP stuff is sacred to most of us, and the chance to see these things is great. Knowing some of the history of the club, I would certainly say it is inappropriate if they were displayed on a car which wasnt connected with DKP. I wouldnt like to say if old members should sell their club stuff, but I can see the appeal in owning these things if you are an enthusiast, and they are for sale.

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the kind words, but I just like sharing the history of what once was.  I look back at it as Camelot and am thankful I was able to experience it with some great friends.

Last night I was at the DKP monthly event at Nick's and try not to miss them.  Myself, along with several of the original guys are so pleased that what we started as kids has grown into such a world wide thing.  Personally I'm thankful that I still have some of my original items, such as the membership card, DKP badge and my original patch along with other items.  My plan is to die with them.

That's cool! That was one of the questions I asked Sarge when I met him last year. Whats it like to see something that started out as a couple of kids fooling around with some cheap cars now an international hobby that thousands of people participate in.

For me I'd have to say I'm humbled by the way I'm treated by the younger guys.  Jim (Sarge) and I have not discussed it much, but I suspect he would agree.

i think its a bit sad some 'non' members collect dkp stuff...
surly, people in the club have earnt their place in it, and others have not by buying jackets or stickers to feel a part of it.

you wouldn't put a dkp sticker or paint a huge gfk logo on your back window?

Hey John, just curious if you have any idea how many DKP1 jackets were issued to members? Also any idea about DKP2? Just trying to see how rare these are with Peters and Fog. I noticed some were stitched in yellow stitching ergo..Members name, club name. I have also seen a DKP jacket in blue (very early) but that could have been a personal touch from a certain member??  Thanks for info.

Now you have me throwing a dart at the board.  I would say possibly 25 to 30 of the original Peters and London Fogs combined.  Some members back in the day didn't have jackets.

Regarding DKP II I have no idea at all.  Possibly some of the guys from that era can comment.

I do not remember any "blue DKP jackets".  Are you saying that had some kind of a patch attached?  If so it may have been something that someone just did on their own.

Last night at dinner I was telling my wife Christie about this thread.  She was there in some of the early days and came up with a question to me that I couldn't answer.  The club decals were a black or very dark blue, so where did the "burgundy" color for the jackets come from?  Any of you original guys have input??

Oh I was told there was some interesting comments on here and would have loved to have read them but was too late, if anyone has any comments that i missed relating to myself please email/pm me directly.

The DKP1 jacket that i have was given to me from Arnie when i purchased his car he was extremely upset as he had kept it in a safe place inside the car...... however the little field mice that through the roof lining was very tasty quite liked the jacket as well !!! Ill post some pictures of the jacket in shreds the badge is OK but it does look kinda cool when draped over the passenger seat.

On the subject of club collectables its great to see so many people have a passion for collections, its like fine art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder........

OK, John, here's another one: I understand the club badges used on the early jackets were made by a lady by the name of Lucille. What was the connection there?

Hey, if you can do posts in colo(u)r, so can I! :D

Keith,

Lucille was an older lady that was located in Anaheim who did the club jacket patches.  I think Peter Dayton found her as she was located close to Anaheim High School that Dayton, Huggins and myself attended.  Gregg Bunch has some info on her and the cost of the patch which was extrememely low for what you got.  What I'm saying by this is there was a good amount of work put into each one.  The patch was as you know a blue background with yellow or gold stiching which tied in closely to the club logo color.

I thought about something after one of my last post.  Club jackets were not assigned to members.  Anyone could walk into the stores that carried them and make a purchase.  Getting the patch was a bit harder as one had to be a member and then pay a few bucks for it.  I think only one patch was available for each member.

Regarding my post in color, I've done it from almost the beginning as it is easy for me to locate my stuff to reply to others.  So son, here is another lesson for you younger lads.  ;D ;D ;D ;D  I like the colo(u)r you've chosen as it is sooooooooooooo you..............   :o :o :o :o :o   ;)

Agreed.  I feel as if the members dont have a problem with it and nobody is trying to pose as a member, then who gives a shit who owns it now as long as it's for collecting purposes. If someone can afford these cars, than be thankful they are being kept in all their glory instead of being destroyed.  Regardless of  who owns them now.

Russell, I'd have to agree.  There is something strange about that patch.  To me it looks more round than what I have.  Also, the VW logo looks different.  Possibly there were different batches run, but I sure don't remember what you are displaying.  I always thought we just had one production run made, but then that was a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time ago.   :-[ :-[  John

Here's a pic of my original jacket patch.... huge difference.  I know Arnie had his own DKP club in Nebraska for a while, going so far as to make cards and a dash plaque, so maybe he had patches made, too.

I can tell you that there appears to be at least three different large jacket patches made. Roger Grago's has a black background, and the detail work on the breast of the "bird" is no where near that of Sarge's. And that would be DKP II issue of course.

My DKP I jacket patch is exactly like Sarge's as per my memory.  Guess I should get it out and verify.  Note the patch is more of an oval rather than round and even the VW logo looks different than Arnie's.

Not a bad idea.   ;) ;)  I'm amazed that something that as kids we never would have given a second look evolves into a topic that now I find so interesting to learn more.  Everyday when I turn on my computer and tune in it is like going to the movies as a kid and watching the on going serial (cliff hanger) to see what will happen next.

Here is a photo of Roger Grago's DKP II jacket patch. Hard to tell if that background is black, or really dark blue. Strange looking pigeon.

I will try to answer that question.... As I recall, Arnie and Terry  Schaefer (sp) were the last two members voted into DKP 1, before things began to shut down, including the club "swag" shop. That would be around early 1974. So, I do not think there was much of anything left at that point. Not until years later, when DKP II began to fire things back up, which would be around 1976-77ish. And for whatever reason, I fell into that void in between DKP I and II, when the club house was gone, and there wasn't much left but an occasional Sunday night foosball game at the Warehouse.

Hi Guys,

I ran into John L. at Cars & Coffee yesterday and he told me to check out this thread.  Let me share information on the patches we had made.  We had ours made by the same sports team uniform place that did our banner.  I don't remember the name but it was right around the block from Don Burns VW in Garden Grove.  I was working at Don Burns at the time so it made it easy to get stuff done on my lunch hour.
I had gotten an original patch from MikeTaylor shortly after we had started the club up again.  We wanted to change the patch a little and the club voted to make it Navy Blue instead of the original lighter Blue.  That was to be the only change.  When I went to pick the order up they were round and the detailing was not as good.  Randy Welch said "It looks like a pigeon with a pineapple body".  We were going to get them redone but never got around to doing it.
I had four jackets, one Peters with original patch, another Peters with our round patch (Which the paramedics cut off of me when I crashed at Bug In 18), a London Fog with our round patch, and a Pacific Trail with our round patch.  Deano now has the Pacific Trail  jacket.  I  just could not fit into it anymore.  The one Peters and London Fog jackets I still have.
Hope this is helpful.

All the best!

Roger Grago

I remember the day you center punched that car... I remember
you STRONGLY telling the paramedics NOT to cut the jacket !!
Maybe they cut it out of jealousy!!!!!      I was behind you to the
left and WILL NEVER forget the crash !!

Here is the NOS patch (1st DKP generation) I received as a present from Da Sarge, not so long ago - thanks again Sarge!
Neat piece! It's definitely oval + bigger than the (round) 3rd generation patch: about 6.5x5-3/4" (17x14.5cm) vs. 3.5x3.5" (8.5x8.5cm).

There are actually two original mint club patches.  Stephan is way younger then me and is what DKP is all about... I know he'll have that patch the rest of his life and he deserves it.  Pete Dayton, surely the inspiration for DKP in the beginning, has the other patch.  Pete has no pictures, plaques or club treasures from the past, so it seemed fitting to pass along something to remind him of good times.

I was thinking of the extreme differences with today's VW club logos, and the '60s DKP one. Today's VW clubs start with black, and add a dose of skulls, bones, blood, knives, bullet holes and flaming eyeballs. Boy, have things changed.

I made a huge mistake selling my DKP jacket. Wish I still had it. What an idiot, I sold it for money. Money is replaceable the jacket isn't. Actually I'd like the patch. I'm too fat for the jacket now.
I was at the doughnut shop the other day and I said to the guy,"man I am out of shape" He said what do you mean, round is a shape.

Well, I have some important info to tell all of you.  As most of you know I have great friends that are amongst you, but there are a few that stand at the top of the list.  Some of you know that they would be Jim (Sarge) Edmiston, Gary Michael Huggins, Pete Dayton, Gregg Bunch, Dwight Magill and the list could go on, but I think you get the idea.  Those names were in the beginnings of the DKP era and through the years they have always remained my friends.

I've told you the story about the Peters DKP original jackets, but I don't know if I told you what happend to mine.  Years ago I opened a closet and there it was looking rather sad and worn and yours truly had become to fat for it to fit.  I was cleaning out stuff and saw no reason to keep it.  No, I don't think insanity runs in my family.  I did remove the original patch which I still own to this day, but gave the jacket to Goodwill as I remember never thinking anymore about it at that time.

Of course time passed and then I realized what a bone head move I'd made.  Unfortunately, I couldn't change what had been done, but maybe I could find an acceptable replacement.  I've spent much time researching this and contacting companies from London Fog on down with no luck.  A couple of jackets were considered, but they just were like the original that I longed for.

UPDATE:  In recent times I was having a phone conversation with long time friend and co DKP founder Gary Michael Huggins and the subject of "The Jackets"  came up.  He blurted out to me that he still had his in the closet and it was almost like new.  My heart rate went up and I asked if he would consider selling it to me.  His relply was "NO, but I'll give it to you if you promise not to sell it".  I almost fell over with disbelief.

It arrived at my office today and as Mike stated almost perfect.  One button missing on the sleeve and a couple of spots that may clean up.  This jacket is so virgin that it still has the leather strap on the end of the zipper.  Maybe even better it fits me and is a great excuse to go on a diet. :o :o  Even more special to me is the fact that I sold this to him some 44 years ago.

My plans are to clean it , sew the original patch back on and wear it on very special occasions only.  I'm a very lucky person to have been gifted this, but even more lucky to have had Mike for a friend for the past 49 years.  God Bless you Mike and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

As I recall the very first jackets that were ordered when Pete Dayton was president they were London Fogs.  After some time passed and we needed to order more for the new members and to replace some of the old ones.  London Fog no longer carried our color or style (not real sure what the case was) so we found almost the same jackets from Peters and were less expensive for us.  That's how I remember it!!

After seeing this post Jim Holmes and I e-mailed and I also contacted Huggins who verified that the Peters Jackets were definitely the first ones.  Huggins stated as he remembers the reason was there were more of them available at the time and even more important they were less money than the Fogs.  It has been about 45 years so some of the memories are a bit (bad choice of words) FOGGY.   ;)  Jim of course was also there in the beginnings and he thinks he has owned two jackets over the years.  LUCKY MAN !!!   8)

Update on mine.  Last week I took it to the dry cleaners we use and did a lengthy explanation as to why this piece of cloth deserved such care.  The gal seemed to understand and said they would check a small area with the cleaning fluids before doing the entire jacket.  Yesterday I went to pick it up holding my breath and she had a big smile  :) :) on her face.  It came out as NEW.  8) 8)  There was one missing button on a sleeve that she was able to match and a minor seam stitching repair.  I left a happy man.   ;D ;D

Now I must start the hunt for my original DKP Patch.  I know I put it in a safe place, but have to find where that safe place is.  I suspect this may be the best "original" Peters DKP jacket in existence and I'll certainly treat it as such.  SEE, DREAMS CAN COME TRUE...

I have to throw this in.  As I was finishing my previous post I was buzzed on the phone.  Peter Dayton was there and we had a good chat.  He and his wife Claudia are spending a week with Gary Huggins in the Tucson area.  Got to speak with Huggins as well and gave him the "jacket" update.  He was pleased.   ;) ;)It is always good to talk to old fiends like those two as I feel without their efforts way back most of this VW stuff might not be happening today.

Ron Fleming does still have his original DKP Peters jacket and wears it occasionally.  Unlike some of us Ron has maintained his size so the jacket still fits pretty good.

Here is a photo of Ron and his Frost Wife Lisa at one of the Bug-Ins, probably 1970 or 1971 leaning against my car (then Firemist Green) wearing the jacket.
