Title: 356 oil pumps/tacho drive............
Post by: Lee.C on October 13, 2009, 01:53:15 am
Just had a thought aftter a friend picked up some 356 guages cheap - as a few of you might know 356 Tachos are driven by a special oilpump, My question is has anyone ever fitted one of the porsche 356 oilpumps in a Type1 VW case  ??? ??? ???

Also anyone happen to know where you can get the drive cables ??? ??? ???

(and I don't want anyone telling me to fit a 356 motor  ;))

I think the bolt pattern is the same, but not sure about the drive gear. Here is a link to new cables.

To take a slightly different tangent - has anyone ever had gauges rebuilt/converted to electronic ???

I did read that some feature car (volksworld I think :-\)
the guy had converted his old speedwell gauges over to modern internal - maybe simon fox, resto cal  :-\ :-\

Any thoughts :)

Have you seen the exhaust port design...  :o :o

angle flow based on a stock head, not bad for 1974...

I guess the other alternative is to find a cheap electronic tach where the needle starts and stops in a similar position to the porsche one, and either swap the internals into the porsche one, or swap the porsche face into the cheap one? Someone must have done this in the history of hot rod building at some point?! here is someone else asking the same question, and kind of an answer.

Why are you stuck on using a cable drive tach? Just curious...

not really stuck - its just cos the original gauges my friend brought are originally cable driven, it would be nice to keep them original :)

Late 356C's had electronic tachs from the factory. Here's a pic of the one I'm using in my split. Took a while to find in decent condition at a reasonable price, but a whole lot easier to deal with than the older mechanical ones.
Not that it helps you convert the one you have available...  ;)

Hmm that looks interesting - looks very similar to the one we have, you see my friend buys things THEN asks me questions  ::) ;) :)
