Yeah Yeah I know the rear wheels are 4 bolt , but they look so much better if five .

Yes I have the article too , Paul Schley found Denny Grove's number for me , I called him a few months ago to talk to him about the car . He said he hadn't even thought about it in twenty years , and was a little shocked that some dude in England is building a replica of a car he drove for six months and crashed nearly fourty years ago .

Lots of sign writing left to do , and got to figure out how to do the lacework on the wings .

its been torture for me coming on here all the time whilst knowing that somewhere in the english country side there was a little VW Gasser in the making  ;)

Thankyou Fabs for all those scans - I had not seen a lot of them till now, especially the the crash  :o

By the way guys I think you should all know all the "sign writing" has been done by the Owner!  :)

I will let Rob take it from here and fill in the details  ;)

Rob, I'll try to dig through some old Custom Car Magazines. My Dad has virtually the first five years of complete issues, and I seem to remember a lace painting article in there somewhere! It might take some time... ::) :D

Basically though, it involved masking up the shape on the panel, a lace curtain taped onto it, and spraying though! :o

looks cool! there is something dodgy to me about building a replica of a crashed car, almost like tempting fate or something!

you should search on the Jalopy Journal HAMB forum for lace painting....there's loads of info not to mention amazing work going on.

Don't say that , Denny told me how scary it was crashing the original , he crashed Ned Bug 2 as well . He gave up with VWs altogether after that .

Any way  most Gasser replicas are built because the originals crashed .

The Lace work shouldn't be too hard , just can't decide wether to flat the laquer , do the lace in base coat , and then re-laquer . Or just do it over the top , so you can feel it .

Some times the lacework was done over the top , like the sign writing , these were only race cars and the paintwork was never that great . As long as they look good from a distance .

Did you do the lacework on your bike ? I love your bike by the way .

I'm ok, thanks. I have some problems with my Manx. but just easy problem because it's all new!!

Here are some pics of my bike tank. Capitan Blaster is the painter. he flaked my manx too. He is great with pinstriping, leteering and every kind of old school paint. on my tank he put a silver layer at the base than paint the lacework in dark, and than paint everythink in candy blue with the laquer on the top.
I know what you mean, for example lettering and pinstriping ar better without the laquer on top. but using laquer on candy colors you increase the deep effect.

Cool project, a great choice. I always wondered after seeing the picture in the first cal look book why a replica hadn't been built.
I have already built it several times in my own mind ;D

rob i found the colored pictures on the net if i remember well it was on the samba
for the others during the summernationals it was in dune buggies /hot vws  winter 71

and just watching on the net to see where i found the colored one ,and found another picture from my blog(i don't remember this one  ::) ::) )it was ip3 just aside the ned bug we can't see the ned bug , but just the door, for me  it was at the 71 summertionals too , because ipIII was there too and running against ipII

Yeah the date of the mag would be great , I know it 1971 , cause the car didn't exist any other year . Unless you would like to sell your copy ?

if anybody read my reply you would know that it would have to be in a mag after July 1971, as that was when the picture was taken.

Fibreglass deck lid I made has finally been painted , so I've had the sign writing brushes out again , not quite finished but looking pretty good .

If anyone wants any authentic ( ie. not very good ) , signwriting doing , let me know . I'm much cheaper than Melliard ,

Thanks Fabs for the Deano Van pics , got the sign writing done today .

Ned Bug has my buggy engine in at the moment to see how it goes .

Also been teaching myself Aluminium Panelling , I best wear gloves in my car , a few sharp edges around .

Rag Rolled !

I ended up using One Shot lettering enamel , sprayed on with an airbrush , then filled the gun with thinners and quickly dusted over it , and then used a plastic bag to roll and crease the paint . It needs a polish and maybe some laquer , but I'm pretty happy so far.

Crikey , nearly 2 years since my last reply on this thread and I have finally made a full pass under power in the Bug !

Nice and gentle on the launch , and through the gears and it went 12.80 . The car  went really straight and feels like there is plenty more to go .

Got some jobs to do now before EBI , the slicks are rubbing on the fenders due to the long race axles ( they were cheap second hand ) . Also the tacho has stopped working , and also need to raise the rear suspension a little .

Ned bug is now down south, a Rob was kind enough to sell the Ned bug to me at the tail end of last year

Nearly 18 years after seeing he original in the cal look bible the replica is tucked up near home  

Rob has made a great job of capturing the feeling and essence of the original and I'm grateful of his dedication to producing a great car

Hopefully it will be making appearances at Drag day and Gary's picnic and a few other events if time allows

Hi Ron , thanks for your kind words about the car . I miss it , workshop doesn't look right without it ! and its a shame I never really got round to running it properly , just a couple of low 12's , it had a lot more to give .

The motor is now in the buggy , so I'll look forward to a race at Drag Day . I'd love to race you in the Plymouth at Gary's Picnic too , wouldn't mind being beaten by my old bug !
