Title: Another 67 ... The Standard-But-Deluxe
Post by: Lt Charbon on October 26, 2009, 20:21:46 pm
Hi everyone,

It's been a long time since I've been watching your awesome cars and I decided to show you my first VW project.

The plan is to make a nice cal-look from a 67 Belgian beetle with the right parts at the right place and many horses to bring me from a strip to another by the road.

Here are few pictures from the base, the beginning of the restoration and what it should look like for season 2010.

More pictures and info soon.

Never posted before with this nickname and didn't like it anymore...

Let's talk about the base...

Here are pictures of the advertising sheet that VW Belgium (Dieteren s.a.) distributed at dealers to promote the 67 1200 Beetle.

My beetle is a 1200 Deluxe made in Belgium (Forest) , as you can see, it has some specific parts and it looks more like a standard bug than a Deluxe but they name it like that.

So for the best observer, you can see the following specifications :

  • Painted turn signals
  • No chrome around the windows
  • Standard steering wheel
  • Small ceiling Upholstery
  • No bumper guards
  • 6V engine
  • No chrome on dashboard
  • Door latch and window lifter Painted in grey
  • Small carpet kit
  • Just one klaxon hole in the left fender
  • Grey/Red fender Beadings
  • ...

I bought it in 2006 from my local VW dealer who kept it for his use, but after several attempt (5 at least...) he decided to sell the beauty.

Being patient pays sometimes.

Next step, pan specs...

Have a nice day.

Looks like a good basis for cal-look. How uncommon are these 1200 '67s.

and with my 67 fastback i pay the most taxes...  ::)

never noticed the small doorpulls. those 1200 standards are just great, but they should have left the trim off from the factory.

Hi Lt

I was just wondering when you would tell the story of your project on the lounge ... Now it began ! Good!

The proof that some guys from "Liège-Luttich-Luik" are more active than others could think  :o

So... you talked about pan specifications !?!  ;D

Title: Re: Another 67 soon registered for The Belgian Traffic Light Championship
Post by: Lids on October 31, 2009, 10:27:48 am
our mate had a 67 standard, he then went and installed fat trim on it including the dash.

It was mentioned in summer edition of volksworld where the now current owner was complaining about the aftermarket sunroof that was installed.  But he thought it was acceptable to fit a roof rack!!!! ::)

Title: Re: Another 67 soon registered for The Belgian Traffic Light Championship
Post by: Lt Charbon on October 31, 2009, 16:38:55 pm
I wanted that kind of beetle because it's a one year only model (with many specific parts), pretty uncommon in standard look and it was build in my country. 67 VW are also good bases used many times to make cal look VW.

Why cal-look ? Because I really like being a giant killer !!

Now, the pan...

As it is "Cal-look lounge" and not "Vintage lounge", let see how to upgrade this beauty... Here are the part list choosed to manage the power :

  • 2 inches narrowed front beam (adjustable)
  • CSP Front disc brakes
  • 356B Rear drum brakes
  • Big torsion bar
  • Original EMPI Camber Compensator
  • Koni 4 shock absorbers + steering
  • Strengthen transmission shafts
  • RANCHO Prostreet gearbox (33x8)
  • CB dropped spindles
  • 145/15 XZX Michelin front tyres
  • 205/70/15 Eagle GA Goodyear rear tyres
  • Line lock
  • Original EMPI 5 spokes wheels

My plan are to use well known, reliable and quality parts, I'd like to keep that beauty for a long long time !
I'd like also to make a car able to turn well, my horizon line won't stop at the end of a quarter mile...

Here are several pictures.

Next : motor specs and inspiration

Hey, hey, welcome to the lounge, (either for me as it is my first post  ;D)

Two points I would like to brought out, are :
1/ the respect LT made to keep the body sooo original; no way to tell him to do a US67 version:
"no man I want the body like it came out of the factory in 67.. in Belgium..."

2/the condition of the re-built: a big 1776 (year) old barn in east-south belgium (sorry I hope you didn't wan't to use the pics later in the post
(http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/4108/dsc09258im.jpg)

Sorry no picture of the smelling dead horse neither the little veal running around the car, but may be some more "out of the mind " pics to come ater on the presentation...

Anyway one first question;
205/70/15 Eagle GA Goodyear rear tyres
Didn't you had some cool 185/??/15 versestein clasic which looks reely good?

cool, just for 'reliability', save the 5 spokes a bit when you will push the pedal... i really, really like the rims, just don't brake them.

nice to see someone from Liège working like Mach1 posted

and even pictures to prove it...  :o   ;D ;D

what colour will it be?

Title: Re: Another 67 soon registered for The Belgian Traffic Light Championship

Thanks Nicolas. I keep the original colour : Fontana grey (L595). Don't worry for the wheels, I'll take care of them...

Raf, for the tyres, I changed my mind after seing this kind of rubber on another nice car (more rake, beautifull stance...).

Here are a few other period ads.
At that time, the commonly named "Standard" beetle was called "De luxe"... Belgium is a crazy country!

US had only 1500 beetles in 1967, hadn't it?

So what are the differences between US and Euro '67?

Title: Re: Another 67 soon registered for The Belgian Traffic Light Championship
Post by: Lt Charbon on November 07, 2009, 22:20:54 pm
Thanks Mach for these nice docs, 67 are so particular.

So for the motor, I decided to make a powerplant with at least 150 HP and a certain amount of torque in order to have a car that is able to run smooth at low RPM and also push hard once passed the 4000 RPM. In a word, a nice 2,3l HotStreet motor. That's why I choose the following pieces with the help of a well known Belgian motorist :

  • 82mm crankshaft VW journal
  • 12V 200mm lighter flywheel
  • Autolinea case 94X86, reinforced CYL N°3
  • Straightcut camgear
  • WEBCAM 86B T1 camshaft
  • Rockers 1.4/1
  • CB ULTRA MAG cyl. head 42x37.5  94mm
  • KENNEDY clutch 200mm 2100 lb
  • Daikin clutch disk
  • GB damper pulley power size
  • 3.3 L GB oil sump
  • GB double valve springs
  • GB Oil pump
  • GB full flow kit
  • 5,5 empi rods
  • Of course, Weber 48 IDA's
  • Type4 oil cooler
  • Round doghouse fanshroud
  • 912 12V generator
  • Merged A1 Muffler 1 5/8" + MEGAFLOW
  • GB breather box
  • Scat short inverted manifolds
  • Bosch 010 distributor + original Bosch blue coil

Compression ratio should be 9.5

I'll also try to make the motor look like the first 48 IDA equipped cal look motor. That's why I'll put a small generator, inverted short manifolds, GB linkage and 010 distributor.

More pics soon.

Now, let's have a look at the resto of the pan.

In order to have a nice car, and as I'm not a confirmed welder, I decided to make the resto of the pan by myself while the shell was welded and painted by professionals.

As you can see, the nose and the corners were rotten, I picked the clean corner on another bend pan and replaced the nose with a new sheet of metal. I also painted it by myself. All that works with the help of my friend Mach1, Redraf and snowball.

In order to protect the pan from the rust, I made it "metalized" (métalisé en français, sorry). In fact we projected on the sand blasted pan a thin layer of melted zinc to prevent oxydation. Then we painted it with 1 layer of washprimer, 2 layers of grey primer and 2 layers of black paint. I hope not to restore it again for a long time...

Even the inside of the nose has been sandblasted... It was just about rust extermination.

The 1200 "standard but Deluxe" is nice in original condition.

Nice too when it's a little bit modified.

Here is a picture (sorry for the bad quality) of the parts to pimp the inside :

  • 912 steering wheel for the "not so deluxe" sport touch
  • Shiftstar gearstick also "not so deluxe"
  • VDO pressure gauge
  • VDO temp gauge
  • VDO 8000RPM tachometer

Next time : Welding works on the shell

Thanks a lot, but you have to know the truth... All that work hasn't been done these last weeks, here is the timing of the project :

  • Welding of the shell was done last year from september to december
  • Primer coat on the shell has been done in spring this year
  • Painting of the shell, in last aug.
  • Welding of the pan, anti-rust treatment and painting this summer
  • Rebuilding of the pan, this september
  • The shell met the pan this september too
  • Doors, wings, decklid and bonnet incomming from painting
  • Building of the powerplant and assembly of the shell this winter 2010
  • Hope to be ready for FreddyFiles 2010

As I didn't have space enough to rebuild the car in my little garage, a very kind farmer allowed me to use his stable during this summer when the cows were out all the days... Very very beautifull uncommon place to rebuild a nice little car !

Here are pictures of the mess before installing the parts and the corner of the farm I used...

Thanks a lot, I make my best to build a nice bug !

For the steering wheel, I just replaced the VW one by the porsche and push a little forward the turn light switch in order to have more space for my fingers.
I still have to try if they touch it when I drive...

It is not easy to understand that you finished building your engine!
More time on oil and engine parts than on the internet isn't a bad thing!

I can't wait to see it dinotested!
So see you and THE engine at Pat Open House on June 19th!

Hello loungers,

It's been a long saturday but with my friend Mach1 we did put the engine in the bug ! 4 hours of work, 2 liters of sweat and several bad words were necessary to fix it on the gearbox... Finally, maybe I should have cut the rear appron. Perhaps for the next one. ::)
Now I just have to finish some details and by the end of the week, it should start and roar as well as in my dream.
So the next update should be a video one...
Here are some pictures I'm proud of :

Yes!!! Even if the Standard but Deluxe '67 was not completely finished and ready for drag strip action, it was at Bitburg, quite discreet.
I'm happy having flight back to Germany to see it and have a seat in it!
I'm sure it/she will be even nicer on the strip!

See ya maybe this year in Torino or in 10 months...

Yes, ready for Spa. Can't wait to test it on the track.

So for the number(s) of the beast ...

To remind, the engine specs are : 2276cm³, Engle FK10, CR 9:1, 010+Blue coil, rocker 1:1,4, 48IDA, CB ultra mag oval port

And we obtain : 160hp at 6200rpm and 210Nm at 4500rpm

First attempt for me to build a vw engine. Very nice for street use as I wanted it to be.

Good Job laurent, you have a great car but i have more information for you .

I have the same model that you but an even rarer version ( 1300A 67 with sunroof, without chrome pack on the car )

I asked to the museum vw , my birth certificate of my 67.

L87 pearl white

built :  25 april 1967

delivery to the vw garage: 2 may 1967 , cologne Germany

Model: 1300 A with sunroof

M-codes
M86 equalizer spring
M095 wolfburg 1 radio
M089 34 BHP engine ( 1300cc not 1200cc )

Title: Re: Another 67 ... The Standard-But-Deluxe
Post by: germanvador on August 27, 2012, 10:34:31 am
on my bith certificate the vw museum make an error on one M-code ( M086 ),  i asked for the other information on the standard models 1967, they said that.

The model says "standard" does not exist any more August 3rd, 1964, it is replaced by the name " VW 1200A ".

August 1st, 1966 the " VW 1200A " becomes the " VW 1300A "

July 31st, 1967 the " VW 1300A " officially do not exist any more.

My 67 was produced on April 25th, 1967 it is thus good one 1300A, it has the emblem on 1300 on the back hood (that by way of the 1300 of 1966)

The roof opening  round corner two folds (periode on 1958-1964) is not an option as we read it everywhere.

The customer asks for a model opening roof, on one standard (he will have automatically a ragtop roof) ,on a version deluxe export (it will have automatically a metallic opening roof)

The typical model 111 is one 1200/1300 without opening roof, the typical model 115 is the version 1200/1300 ragtop
