Title: Zf Diff installation

After a few dead ends and after buying a box that was supposed to have a ZF diff in I managed to pick up a zf diff over the winter and am hoping to install it this weekend.

Are there any ZF specific installation procedures I should be carring out or is it pretty much the same as the super dif install.

Hi Ron,

I got some very good and helpfull advices from bruce about drill the diff housing to get more oil to the discs.

And I modified both side plates at the gearbox with the oilholes as shown in the vw manual.

I would like to know if we can purchase new disc for ZF.And by the way where ;)
We got one waiting in the garage with worn disc so...

that's some big holes you've drilled there, what sort of size are they ???

also the extra holes in the side plates is that both sides . They appear to be above where the axle boot locates is that right ??

Hi Ron,

the holes are 12mm and extended them to oval and angeled them to grab up the oil like the existing middle holes.

I modified both sidecovers with openings directed to the backside.

I am not 100% sure about the function of the extra oppenings.
As I understand throw around oil should drop thru the top hole to the cone section and then to the bearing?
As VW advcived it for LSD I did it as shown.

Donīt forget to cut a little piece off the plastic cone spacer (between axlehousing - sidecover)
I even secured the plasic thing with sealer so it can`t be turned.

Hi Ron,

pre lubing especially at the discs is essential.

For the gearbox I use Shell Spirax GL5 LS oil

hey guys,
can I use differential oil or is it too viscous?
I found this in a local shop:

CASTROL SAF XA, but castrol says it can lead to reduced synchronizer performance

called castrol today,
and they said use SAF XJ, its used for BMW LSDs and should work
