I would like to give a big thanks to all the great people who came out (with or without their Bugs ;)) this past Saturday for breakfast.
I'm sure all had as good a time as I did. New faces, new cars and works in progress gave plenty to talk about.
I also would like to give a special thanks to MYTOY/Mark Ramirez for making the long distance trip and putting out the phone calls to help make this by far the biggest and best turn out thus far.
Ted, your pictures are awesome and chronicle the event perfectly, thank you very much.
"Crazy Joe" said he enjoyed himself and is planning to attend regularly if he can.
Hope all who can make it will put February 5th down on their calenders for the next gathering.

little drive after we eat??? I was wondering if a short cruise might be a nice way to finish
the event?? Let me know what you're thinking !!! How about some PRE-SUPER bowl fun! :D

Excuse me for not posting sooner. I'm still looking for words to describe what a great day it was!
With over 36 cars (and a motorcycle, Dave!) that turned out it was well attended to say the least, and has exceeded all expectations of it's success. Great showing of Karmanns too, with six Ghias and three Cab's. A few of the cars were locals attracted to the spot by the visual impact that the scene made. Thanks Randy, Sarge, Mark and Ted for recording the happening in pictures so well.
It was a great pleasure to meet so many new Legendary friends and put more faces to names as Hecker would say.  I want to thank all the people who traveled long distances and put aside their normal Saturday mornings to come to visit Whittier for breakfast, and no less thanks go to the "regulars" for their continued support. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did.
The staff of Ruby's Diner also wanted to extend their thanks and were pleased with our patronage. The manager assured me that given notice they would be happy to put more personnel on duty for our future events to accommodate the increased demand.
The brief cruise afterward was icing on the cake as they say, and a fun way to part company for the remainder of the day.
The first Saturday of the month is now firm, and we have talked of a schedule for the coming year, so keep posted for the next date.
See ya' there!
Bruce

WOW, what a great time at Ruby's.  I hope this will be an ongoing event and I'll make it a point to skip Cars & Coffee, sleep in and still have a great event to attend.  THANKS to all who put forth the effort to make this happen.

Side story:  I had to leave a bit early to meet with the termite people at home.  Driving down Whittier Blvd. by myself not bothering anyone I hear a BEEP !!  BEEP !! and look to my left to see a guy in a rather chalky white Dodge truck yelling something at me.  Finally I figured out he was telling me that my deck lid had the wrong handle.  I replied with "the car is ORIGINAL".  He comes back with is the car a '63?  (If he was so HOT he should have already known this) to which I replied "YES".  He continues to say "the handle is wrong".  My only response was "I'm sure happy I ran into the EXPERT" and made my right turn to head down Beach Blvd  It could only happen to me... :) :) :) :) :).

I'm ALWAYS  ready to cruise in my car, I guess thats a benefit to having a stock motor.
I've enjoyed driving it this last year -- thanks to Bruce  -- I think I've put around 6000 miles on it since
last January (2009)  He reminded me it should be time for a valve adjustment & another oil change.

OKAY  now we can be open to suggestions, what are your ideas ?  A cruise up & down Whittier?
How about down Beach Blvd to PCH ? A little coastline cruising, a short hop over to El Dorado Park? Let's
find out where some of you would like to go. ANY IDEAS are likely to stir some great times !!!   :D            Ron

A cruise to:
the beach
El Dorado Park (just like Craig Park, it's a regional one ran by the city and there is an entry fee... just a heads up)
Whittier Blvd. (careful on that one... hopefully, the local police won't have a problem with this since it's during daylight hours)

Some great ideas so far... please keep 'em flowing. This is shaping up to be a really cool gathering/event.

I don't believe 20 + similar cars driving in a lawful fashion up and down the boulevard  one time at 12:00 noon would bring on legal enforcement.

I agree, Dan. But we're talking about the very same law enforcement that used to hassle us all when we cruised that place, thirty years ago in our Cal Lookers. I'd park on the corner of Painter & Whittier, go buy some food at Der Weinerschniztel, some candy at the store (Ralphs, I think), and the cops would still give us a hard time. Showed 'em the receipts and that only bought us a little time. They'd come back a few minutes later and threaten to write us loitering tickets. So we'd move to another spot down the street so we could see the cars and look for our friends cruising.

Great memories and good times!

Like I said, it'll probably be no big deal. Most of those cops are most likely long gone, anyway.

I agree with all of ya, my take is, if we want to do this right, why don't 2-3 of us go to the Whittier PD and just let them know what we want to do. That we are all older nownand know better and that we obey the laws of the road. It's for old time sake. I'm sure they would understand, I hope.

Sorry Hecker, I'm not trying to start a thread jack on your successful thread.

Mark, I understand your point of view about the legal enforcement thirty years ago. It's relevent, but it also was thirty years ago.

Whitter shut down cruising Whittier Blvd. at night. There hasn't been any form of cruising there in years.

If we all 20 cars drove out on the boulevard, made only one pass to Der Weinershnitzel and back obeying all traffic laws at noon on a Saturday, again I doubt it would raise any attention. This is not a recurring theme.

I'm sure none of you were hasseled rolling down Santa Gertrudes to that park.

The only thing we have to fear -- is cops. !!!  I think as long as we obey all traffic laws - don't run any
lights, & keep enough space between cars, so as not to tailgate, etc. we should be fine!!! HECK, most
of the older cops NOW  probably had VW's when they were younger.           Ron

most cops dont think a VW can go that fast!! It was only a couple months ago that I was HAULING ASS down Whittier blvd, 48's at full song. Blazing past a Camaro when I saw a motorcycle cop about 200 yards ahead with radar in hand....I quickly pushed in the clutch and let of the gas to bring it down to a nice idling coast. Guess who got pulled over... wasn't me!!! I feel kinda bad he took the hit for me, but thats what you get when drive a camaro

My recommendation...La Mirada Regional Park.  Good free parking, and good spot for photos too.  Maybe 15 minutes from Rubys.  B 4 B was great as it was a fun morning event W/O taking up the entire day.  I think a short drive after is icing on the cake.

Gotta say Randy, that is pretty cool. But, yes, if we keep within the law and not draw attention, will be fine. I think the only attention will be people giving us thumbs up, it's happened to me. my thinking is to go down Scott Ave. to Lambert, make a right, go down to Santa Fe Springs Rd. make a right go back up to Whittier to the 4 points, make a right onto Whittier, then we cruz back to either to Ruby's or to the park we went to, What ya think??? Maybe have someone take some pics of everything or even video!!  ;D

Hmmmm just a few notes.......
1.As far the Whittier PD...I don't think those cops are still on the force ..! Most of them(P.D.) are way younger than us now ...! I don't feel like a target at all nowadays... !I have encountered many a P.D. in Whittier and I don't even get a look...!!

2. I was thinking the same thing about a cruise to the beach..maybe  Shoreline Village in Long Beach...? Great view and great for some pics with the Queen Mary in the background also Lots of parking ...? also places to grab a bite for lunch or a drink ( Mmmm Ice Cold Brewskie)@Tequila Jacks (Yes I do work there ..!),Yard House( Even More Cold Brewskie's),etc....

3.also El Dorado parks sounds good too...Very Classic spot

But I know some of us have a long drive just to get to Rubys...!.....Anyway I'm down for a LiL Cruizin after breakfast so any where would be cool....!!!

Shoreline Village in Long Beach... that would be COOL! Good suggestion, Randy. We could even include El Dorado park on the way, too.

Keep the ideas flowing, please.

Thanks Mark....Yeah I think it would make some great shots ....it's a very scenic spot...!
Starting next week they start setting up the barriers for the Long Beach Grand Prix in April..Last year I was thinking how cool it would be to take a pic with nothing but VW's crossing the finish line with all the grandstand and barriers In full "Long Beach Grand Prix style"......!! after that we could head down through Belmont shores ( Ocean to 2nd st)up to Studebaker to 22 frwy up to 605 frwy and get off on Spring st to El Dorado Park..? We could take the 605 W to 105 W to 710 S down to Shoreline drive ...?

Okay Y'all, just for clarity.

I was only proposing the idea of a 10 minute jaunt up & down Whittier Blvd. as a fit ending to a great breakfast event.

The BFB is the actual reason why we are gathering and most want to go home after yapping and eating.

Please, save your larger scale plans for a perfect day when we can actually spend the time driving and stopping.

For now, lets just eat breakfast at Ruby's and maybe take a quick spin.

I'm up for a cruise, whittier blvd. is fine, cruising turnbull canyon would be fun also.  I'm even in for a cruise to pch, then north (or south).
I say you (Ron) and Bruce make the call, and then post it up.  You guys started this gathering, so take it where YOU want it to go.
As far as the cops, I have been in 50+ nova cruises, without telling the local law enforcement agencies, and everything has been fine as long as you obey the law.

There has been no discussion, but the format has been to meet on the first Saturday of the month. The first Sat in June would be the 4th,  and the Classic is the following week on the 12th. The OCTO show is also on Sat the 11th, so it might conflict with some peoples schedules.
The 4th should still be a good way to kick off the weeks activities though :)

Funny, I've never been to Hillcrest Park during daylight hours.. don't know about the.. um.. homo thing.
As a bunch of crazy teens, we would do the Bigwheel rides after the park was closed.. seems like we had to hop a fence?? Hard to say, it's been over 35 years! As I remember it, there was a fairly skinny paved road that maintenance would use that ran all through the park. This road had some pretty nasty downhills and tight turns.. perfect for riding on your knees on an ill handling, plastic wheeled child's toy!!
Good times!

Dang, Rick... glad that crap happened after we used to hang out there.

Dave, your heart's in the right place... I still look for hills to either ride my skateboards down and/or a Big Wheel. Anything with wheels, and I'm happy.

We really need to include a Big Wheel or trike race at some VW events.

Well, after much serious consideration & many Ha-rumphs ....It is with great honor that I announce
The next Bugs for Breakfast scheduled for March 5th 2011 will begin at RUBY'S in Whittier @ 8:30 am
We will leave around 9:30 -- no later than 9:45 to drive as many VW's as we can to West Covina.
This will be a 12.5 mile drive that should be 35 - 45 minutes to the Memorial Service for SHUBEE.
I am asking anyone that knew Gary, anyone who knows anyone who knows Gary, anyone who ever
bought anything from him or sold anything to him, to show up for this short cruise. There will be
directions printed to follow / like a rally / google maps / and we should be able to make a statement
as we drive through the streets. If we can get the same turn out as we had last month it will be great.
I've spoken to friends of SHUBEE from the early 70's -- guys he went to high school with, etc.
TEXAS TOM is flying in from Austin,Tx for the memorial  -- he will be in town for Nick's Sunday too.
Hope everyone can make it, as I said before --- something memorable, not something we will do again, soon.

Ruby's on the 4th sounds great and also the drive to Shubee's memorial.  Christie and I are planning on attending both.

I'd like to comment on Hillcrest Park from days of long ago.  This use to be a place to go and park at night with your best gal.  Maybe the "same sex" thing was going on, but I never heard anything about it back in the day.  Speaking of days, there were numerous times that Jim (Sarge), myself and others would go up the hill and detail our cars.  This was one of our favorite "detail" locations.

I haven't been through the park in years, but now look forward to a drive through to see how much has changed.

This is great news for the VW comunity to show there respect to a good man that has been a friend to all of us, in person or the internet,  here in the State's and across the Sea's. Now he's with the good man upstairs not feeling any pain. So lets show the love and respect he deserves, and make this a grand Memorial Cruz to celebrate his good life.

THE ROUTE is .....Left out of Ruby's, a right turn at Colima over the hill to Hacienda where we will turn left.
Proceed north on Hacienda -- it changes names to Glendora & also to Vincent along the West Covina Mall.
We will continue north on Vincent under the 10 Freeway to Badillo. We will make a right & find the driveway
for FAITH COMMUNITY CHURCH. its about 12.5 miles & should take 35-45 minutes I think on Saturday morning.
I will also be printing out  some maps to hand out !! We should be able to be there plenty early or right on time.
I truly hope we can get a massive group of VW's to show up to pay respect to one our own. I think it will be
a great tribute to have a huge turnout.  I know my car will be there !!  ;D

Those who wish to participate in a Cruise to attend Shubee's Memorial should plan on leaving Ruby's no later than 9:30AM in order to make it to the Church by about 10:30AM.
See ya'll in the morning
P.S. Ruby's opens at 7:00AM if anyone wants to get there earlier please do.

Thank You for helping to make Garys Celebration of his life so special. I am sure he was smiling down when he saw all his friends new and old there and all this loving family too.  He was a special man and will never be forgotten by many. Will always miss him and hold him close to my heart always for he was my bestfriend and partner.
Thank You for all the condolances and emails and phone calls i have recieved.  Melisa and I appreciate them. Truely was a awesome day with 80 degree weather, blue skys and the church and restraunt filled with so much Love for Shubee. Loved hearing some stories i hadnt heard before. Guess Gary was holding out alittle on me.

Woke up to a gorgeous warm So Cal morning. Met my friend/neighbor/co-worker at a local gas station so we could drive up to Whittier together.

As you can see, we had rather favorable traffic conditions, or lack thereof.

The day ended up being a warm eighty degrees and perfect for taking out the cars for some enjoyment.

John L. has one of the coolest VW stickers I've yet to see.

A few more line up shots.

Really like this old VW license plate frame. I have one from this dealer, but you don't see ones this old with this font.

All in all, a very nice morning and good to see everyone. Texas Tom, hope that you enjoyed that ride in Schwimmer's car. I'm quite sure that you did. Glad that you were able to make it out. Have fun on the rest of your trip. Sorry for our harsh winter weather, too.

Well, funny you mention that....I was just thinking that as I drove home from work today!!!
If memory serves me right --- and I hope someone from D.K.P. will chime in --- there is a Friday
night event  @ NICK'S --- so why not try to get some people out Saturday April 30th ??
It would really work out well for any out of town / country visitors!! I'm totally open to feedback
from ANY LOCALS ...let me know if it can happen !! A Friday, Saturday, Sunday weekend  -- might
be perfect for those who can make one or the other or ALL THREE !!! ;D ;D ;)

I think so too. Bug-In, there may be a DKP Cruz night, don't know on Friday, maybe any DKP guy's can chime in and give us that info., but Saturday I don't think anything is going on. Now Classic weekend, yes! DKP Cruz night on Friday, OCTO on Sat. and Classic's on Sunday. I think were good to go for Bug-In weekend or Sat. morning. WE need the correct dates on the other happenings, that would straighten this out. See ya all tomorrow!!  ;D

Tero it's because of the TIME ZONE difference.....BUG-IN has always been Sunday here in the states.

some interest in a Breakfast gathering at the usual place  RUBY'S  on Whittier

We hope to see "TERO" from Finland !!! So get ready for a full weekend of VW Fun !!!

Worked after we corrected the typo we made into GPS, "Whittwood" instead "Whittier". Spent half an hour looking for the place, as oddly enough there was a Carl's Jr (which was the landmark Ron told us) near 10109 Whittier  :)

Anyway good to connect some usernames with faces and hear good stories  8)

Ron, don't feel too bad. At least you didn't send them to Stanton, like a few years ago when some people from Europe (Belgium?) were sent there. I'll never forget Schwimmer's classic response to that day.

"THAT can't be good."

HAHA!!

I don't know if this is the incident you're talking about but at one BugIn I told Bill that I was "Taking the Norwegians to Stanton" where some of them were staying and Bill responded with "That's not something you hear everyday."  ;D

That was my Lounge signature for a while

A small turn-out this month but just as enthusiastic as ever...
[attachment=1]
We all enjoyed meeting and greeting our special guests from Finland Tero and his lovely wife Sanna. We all had a lot of fun sharing stories over a "light" American style breakfast ;D It was very cool hearing his (and her!) tale of taking his car to the VolksWorld show and making a feature in the magazine. Congratulations on a job well done. Also, many thanks to both of you for taking the extra effort to attend, it made it a special event I'll never forget.

As a side note, we are going to skip the first Saturday in May because of Mother's Day.
The next event is planned for June 4th 2011 which should work out well and serve to kick off the "the Week"

Pleasure was all ours  :) This is what I enjoy most, getting to know new people and swap some stories. Also great to get a glimpse about depth of the scene (both today and what it was) and learn about other clubs, like DKK and DSK, that haven't been so widely exposed in historical magazine articles etc.

Yes, I DID... saw all the old guys, & got to tell a special story to a guy I'm sure didn't want to hear it!!!
It involved jail, bail, & a fast trip to the Louisville airport !! The year 1985. He remembered it, but did
not know all the details. Needless to say, he was happy I helped him out!  On the money front, I was
able to sell some old stuff just taking up room in the garage !!! That will help with my CLASSIC BUDGET !!!
Sorry to have missed Bugs for Breakfast -- but I had my own Bugs for BMX --- lots of people enjoy VW's     ;)

Ok guys it's that time of the month again ;D

We will be getting together this Saturday the 2nd of July for our regular Bugs for Breakfast meeting at Ruby's Diner in Whittier.

If the turn out is light and lowoval is planning to attend, we may switch it to Norm's Famous Burgers down the street. Norm's has regular internet specials, and this week it's two eggs, two sausage or bacon, two pancakes, coffee or hot chocolate for only $3.00! The parking is limited at this venue, but the food is great (better than Ruby's IMHO).

Anyone interested please chime in early.

See ya'll there!

That's one of our many original club cars and has a great story behind it. Joe "Skeeter" Larson is an original D.K.K. founding member. When he first built the '66, it looked like this:

That's how the car looked when he bought it back from the same guy that he sold it to back in '80-'81. The buyer kept the car all of those years  and moved three times. When Joe found the car in San Clemente, he was beyond stoked to find his high school car still intact. And in January of 2010, he bought the car back.

He completely redid the the entire car and decided to paint it new Beetle beige, built a big healthy engine, beefed up the transmission, disc brakes, European Porsche 911 headlight lenses, rear quarter window pop-outs, and had a gorgeous interior installed. I'll have to dig around and post up some recent pics of the car.

At this year's Bug-In.

(edit) Sorry for the thread hi-jack.

Sorry for not getting any good pics Ted, the battery's in my camera have died ::)
Good meeting and nice warm weather as usual. As well as the usual suspects the highlights were Mark R aka Kato had his new Weber motor in the '67, first timer and Ed Craigs neighbor Deans nice '67, and Ralph from the VW Goldmine brought his '56 oval he's owned since 1966!
The oval was a blast from the past, complete with dozens of dash plaques dating from 1968, including
Bug-In 1, 8-Track tape player with The Beach Boys playing, and vintage Autohaus and Deano stickers under the hood and decklid! Real sorry I didn't get any good pics of it, the ones I took with a phone are too large ::). I will try to arrange a private photo session ;)
Hope to see you guys next month.

I"d like to see more people and cars attend as this is a good event and makes a nice break from the early hours of Cars & Coffee.  Ed Craig said if he is not out of town he'll try and get that wreck of a Ghia started and make a showing, so if you see a cloud of smoke in the distance, don't worry it will just be Ed in the Green Monster..........
