Hi, Flow!

Definitaly a car with potential :) Not much have been modified, so it's gonna be cool to see what's happening to the car from modification to modification :)
You're probably a student and students don't have a lot of cash generally.
They have a very, very important thing instead - TIME :)
If I may give an advice: do as much as you can with your car yourself, cause later will be harder :)

Fingers crossed for the project!

Cheers,

rebel

Thank you Rebel !  ;D

You're right, I'm a student and as you says, I do as much things as possible myself on the car  ;)

Soon : new front tires (more high), buggy bar and new paint (engine and rear light)  ::)

Nice car, I like the wheels  8) You just need to put taller front tires, and to weld the bumper brackets holes on the fenders.

Title: Re: My '70 patina
Post by: speedwell on September 05, 2010, 13:04:45 pm
flow just my opinion  the buggy bar look a little bit to high , may be it's just the short decklid who gives this effect
(http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs425.snc4/46825_1512145556968_1034276873_1501174_8062630_n.jpg)

here's my car
(http://static.skynetblogs.be/media/86488/140644752.2.jpg)

the distance from the decklid to the  buggy bar looks correct

here's a blue late model  with buggy bars like yours   ;)

Title: Re: My '70 patina
Post by: Flow on September 05, 2010, 16:28:07 pm
I see what you mean but I think the model are different  :(

The only thing I can do is twist the bar... but when you see it in real, it's not shocking  ;)

I think it's due to the late model decklid too. iT Looks great with buggy bars and 3 spokes center caps !

I dare you to drive this Bus thru downtown Los Angeles.  I would bet you might stay alive less than 20 minutes.

Not the most politically correct artwork that I have seen.....

A "Picaninny" is a very hateful and derogitory awful word from the old southern state cotton farmers that means a very young man, not yet old enough to work in the fields.  The real definition of a "ninny" is undeveloped ball of cotton, so if you "pick a ninny" its not ready for use yet......  Get it?

Good luck with that.

Personally I would strongly encourage you to go with a different paint scheme.....  2 cents worth right there.

Interesting.  I understand....

Although we (here in Finland) do have something about the third highest number of guns in the world per capita, we use them mainly to shoot forest animals and not each other. That has something to do with our slave-free history (if you don't count the rule of Sweden and Russia as slavery) and of course we have had an long time agreement to help the poor & unemployed with social care and have free daycare, school (up to high school and university levels) and health care plus pension plans by the state. And we do have freedom of speech, two official languages and so on. You get the picture :D

But thanks for the heads-up and history of the picture. By a really strange coincidence I happen to have an retro plaquette from that Picaninny advert hangin on my kitchen wall! Now I have a story to tell about that cute little boy in the picture...it's funny how american 50's was so full of racism it boasted itself in adverts and newspapers.

And for the topic: that car is really nice! Like the wheel, bucket seats and the stance - and the paint of course!

J

so how have you lowered the car now? spindles or beam?

Title: Re: My '70 patina
Post by: Nico86 on April 18, 2011, 11:28:28 am
Looking good  8). Don't lower it too much now, just put higher front tires to fill the fender arches, spoke wheel-caps on the front, and it will be perfect. I would also put orange front turn signal lenses.

That's what I want, fill the fender arches  ;)

Spoke wheel caps come out too much on the sides, not very beautiful...  :(

Another one, I think it will be perfect with the color of your car and your white bonnet-bra.

PS : I've done a video sunday but when I watched it on the computer, it was too bad to be published  :D I'll make a better one this week end !!!  :)

La SP101 c'est du blanc direct, la SP118 c'est de l'apprêt haute température mais je pense que ça fera pareil l'une ou l'autre. Sinon la Julien 600°C ça le fait aussi et c'est une bonne marque.  ;)

Hey guys, it's been a while since the last time I posted something here... The car is still mine but has evolved a little bit and she is my only car since 4 years now !

So I have now Empi 8, repros from the 80's, and a Formula steering wheel, same manufacturer than the Speedwell if I'm right.

Yes I know, the car is not shiny but my student status doesn't allow me to afford a restauration yet...

The pictures are from this summer... Souvenir of the holidays  :'(

 ;D ;D ;D

Well, sometimes you don't need a show car to win prices... It was unexpected for me ;D

The car ran pretty well two weeks ago with 1200km in 5 days... 4.5 years mine and I want nothing but her !

So... I bought these scoops but I still don't know if I fall in "the custom side of the force" or if I let her as she is...

Fun fact : even if the speedometer is not stock, it went back to 0 km last week... Meaning that I made around 60000 km in 5 years... Not bad for a piece of rust  :P

I'm a little bit disappointed because a lot of the pictures are disappearing on this thread... I'm gonna try an other way to upload them.

So... I repost the last one about the scoop I added last summer. Currently I just fixed my direction issues and made a geometry in the way to improve the car for the 2000 km road trip to the EBI in June... Can't wait !

One the other hand, 2 months to wait and I'm no longer student... This will determine how long I have to wait to start my new engine project who will turn to be a punchy 1600cc. Reasonable for a start...  :)

this car has attitude for sure. the scoops work  on this  car as well.
i really would lose the daily driven sticker, but too much stickers aren't my thing.

what i do always look at is the wheels. it seems the spokes on 'real' empi's and aftermarket ones are so much different. but i like them both, they give the car a different look nonetheless.

I went to a great road trip this weekend in the Cévennes, a mountain land in the South of France... A total of 600km, with 200km on narrow and curvy road ! My little engine is still strong and only consumed 6.6L/100km on the highway !!

It was too the opportunity for me to grab an "as new" 85.5 Mahle kit for my projet...  :)

Hey ! Thank you for taking news... Sadly, no udaptes currently as I just moved in a flat and I have now an other daily who needs some servicing... The bug didn't hit the road for two months and it's happening for the first time since I have her ! Hard times to live for me but I have very little time (and money) to focus on her. Plus the gearbox is slowly going to break, the 4th doesn't want to stay in  :'(

But... I am slowly buying a base engine for a 1600cc that I want to put in the car before the end of the year !

DDD is not planned but the next EBI will definitly be !!  :)

Here are my two cars, one for the straight lines, and one for the curves  ;D

Not so much... I have some issues, the battery won't charge and I don't know where it's from... My electrical abilities are shameful so I am not able to resolve this by myself.

The gearbox is still dying and "little money problems" (new school year, tuition fees, new flat, slow as f*ck administration...) delay the work planned on her.

I can't wait to drive her again but I have to be patient and it is starts to get long !!

Short term objective : be ready for 2017

Long term and unmissable objective : EBI 7 !

I have had a brand new battery go bad after sitting over the winter. Try taking the battery out of your daily driver and hooking it up to the bug if it works that means your battery is bad

I would check the battery first as well. During the last few years I've had a lot of problems with batteries refusing to charge on different cars, even recent ones. If you have a battery charger or if you can borrow one, you will see if it's the battery or the car.

Seems they are only selling crap now, most of the time they are dead after less than 3 years only. And troubles with brand new ones after a few months only are common  >:( On the diesel Golf MkI, with the rough winter we have here, I have to replace it every 2 or 3 years, eventhough I'm staying away from supermarket cheap batteries. I'm buying Varta or Fulmen ones but they are still not the best. Stay away from Fiamm batteries, I had one that was dead after 18 months.

I don't think so because if the battery is charged, it will work for sure ! But if the issue comes from somewhere else, it will work only until there is no power inside anymore...

Hello everybody !
It's been a long time since my last post here... The reason is simple, my car has been sitting on a parking for nearly 3 years now due to multiples issues. But this time is over, the beetle is gone for some treatment to a well known french motorist : new discs brakes, new gearbox, new electricity, new fuel line and a new 1600cc engine.
So at this time the car as gone through a big cleaning, sit on 4 new tires, front has 135/15 Toyo and rear has 215/65 Cooper Cobra. Inside, there is now a big mirror like back in the 80's  8) and a rollcage.
Can't wait to put my hands on the steering wheel again !

Sounds good. Is that Rollcage made by the german Company "Matter"?
Still love the look of your Bug!

Thank you ! You're right, it's an old Matter rollcage from 1997 or something like that...

Okay ! The car is nearly done !!

She looks like trash right now but a lot of things have been made, and that's what is inside that matters the most   ::)
New front discs brakes
Completely new wiring
New gearbox 8:33 with a long 4
New engine : 1600cc with 40 Dellorto and some other parts that I will detail later because I understand shit about engines  ;D

that came out really well. only I would prefer to see a dynamo instead of a alternator to have it even more 70's. the exhaust looks super though.  ;)

Thank you !! The exhaust is an aftermarket black Ansa, cut and placed on the left then painted white  8)

We used modern parts from the basis of a used engine that I bought. Apart from the paint, we just replaced what was too old, so I understand your comment. I'd love to have a Magneto for exemple, but the engine builder said it was too complicated for a daily use, and I respect what he says because he knows and I'm an ignorant  ;D

It doesn't mean that it will not evolve later, with maybe a nice old pulley or something like that !

She's having a nice company during the time of her cure !  8)

By the way she lost almost all her blue paint on the top during the last years in the dry and sunny weather...

Nice to see you still got the car and it's still alive! I thought maybe you too abandoned the VW ship, as it seems it's been trendy lately  ;D

Great progress and upgrades, hope you are enjoying it on the road again now!

And it's done, the car is back on the road. Really happy with the work made by Slymotors. Now I need to make it reliable, then drive it a lot and a lot and a lot... And maybe a little bit of cleaning could be nice  ;D

Nice to see it back on the road! How's the engine going?

I'm so thrilled to drive it again !!  ;D

Had some minors issues with the oil pump and the gas pump as they were old and not working for some years. So we went for new and better ones.

Now the engine runs very well, just as I wanted. It's perfect for the modern traffic, a lot of torque, enough power to overtake when I want and 130 kph at 3000 rpm on the highway  8)

Ok so I repeat what I've seen but I don't know shit about all of this  :D
Gearbox : 8x33 with a longer 4th
Cylinder head : Mahle 90mm
Camshaft : CB Perf 2232
Valves : CB Perf Big Foot 31mm
Carburetors : Dellorto 40
Exhaust : Ansa

I don't know if I forgot some important parts...

We had issues with some parts so we switched for a bigger oil pump, an electric fuel pump and an electronic ignition. We kinda lost the "old school" look for something more efficient

I finally had the time to do some cleaning inside the car and add carpets in the trunk. It's so much better ! I like the idea to have an "old looking" car outside and something very clean inside  8)
