Title: Can busses ever be cool Cal-Lookers?
Post by: Wünderwolff on October 25, 2010, 19:33:58 pm
Well, imagine you have a cool but ratty Cal Look Karmann Ghia and just for arguments sake let's say it is blue and runs high 13's. Now imagine you want to up the ante a little bit more by adding a Turbo next year, so you will crush any of the previous set Club Speed Records. And then for some very strange reason you fall in love with a Bay. Are you too far off the beaten path so even a few good smacks of the Bible as written by Keith won't set you straight? Or maybe, just maybe, can said Bay ever be considered a Looker, and even more, be considered a full, valid member of a Cal Look line-up?

Can you all post up some pictures of serious contenders! I'll start the series of, although it is more of a race car than a Looker.

the busses that are posted in this thread are very cool and can, in my opinion, be considered cal-look.

however, for some reason, i always find it strange to see a bus on fuchs or brm wheels..

Stylistically, I think buses can retain 'Cal Look' appeal... but as for performance, I wonder how stable they can realistically be with enough power behind them?  I feel very prone riding around even in a relatively stock or mild bus, but I would be terrified to ride around one with significant horsepower...but then I'm a coward.;D

Wimp  :P I can understand that you feel a little more vulnerable as there is NO bonnet in front of you to give you a false sense of safety. But you can always cage a bus as you can with a Bug. (pics below of the Cool Flo 56 Panel). I've run mid 16's with my 1776cc and (on private roads only) sat at 100mph quite comfortably, Been a passenger in the green Panel above which a fair few years ago ran mid 13's with a 2332cc engine. I think just like with bugs it's all in the set up and parts used. Obviously Stock brakes are a NO NO, but uprated vented disc brakes seem to do the job quite nicely. Buses are really stable and great fun to drive when set up properly! I'd argue they are much more stable than beetle's at Speed due to the weight and extra wheel base!  ;D I can't wait for next year I'll be running my new 2276cc engine which is currently being built. Roll on the low 15's maybe 14's  ;D

Lol, very nice work, first of all!  Bus looks great.  Second of all, I was being partially facetious  in my response, as I'm a big fan of Jason Lang's 13-second bus that regularly hits up Sacramento Bug O Rama. You are right about that false sense of security in a Bug, I won't deny that...  ;D

There was a "cal-trans orange", bay window panel with BRMs featured in VWTrends years ago. It was pretty sweet.

Most of the Type 2s that I've seen hardly seem Cal Look to me. There's a very small handful of 'em that have caught my attention:

Sean Lucero (D.K.K.) had a gorgeous royal blue late model ('74-'77) panel w/911 alloys and engine. SUPER fast and lowered just right.

Paul Mayeda (D.K.K.) had a very clean '71 that was Ruby Red or something like it. All stock, sat perfect, and had BRMs. Single FourTuned quiet pack. HUGE sunroof in the back. I always enjoyed sitting in the back of that thing, cruising w/the top open.

Mark Ito (D.K.K.) had a cool lookin' root beer brown & white '67 with 911 alloys. I forget which engine he had, but it wasn't stock. We went to Bug-O-Rama in 1981 with our cars.

John Blesgraaf's super sanitary white '69 was featured in Volks World, October of 2007. Other than the rear end sitting too low, it's perfect. Un-polished 911 alloy wheels look SO right at home on that vehicle. Just a bigger engine, and it would be a blast to drive.

Now look what you have done Fabian, you went and posted some really old pics that may be offensive......  Hah!  Lyle Schaffer, absolutely one of the funnest people ever showing his third leg (almost).
That other pic with me (I was skinny) and the others on the roof and Hicken at the keg in Lyles bus, and then hippy Meredith with the porn 'stache'.... beautiful.  Absolutely beautiful.  You can kinda see Luceros bus on the far right with his hot blonde gfriend in the back.

Oh yeah, as Fred/Mark said Sean Lucero's Bay window had the 911 6 motor in it and she pulled strong.  It was a bit of work to get it all to fit but it hummed.  The guy never seemed to jump on it tho.  It had blue shag carpeting and a small fridge in it, ALWAYS fully stocked (not for long) and I also remember some surf art airbrushed on the inside door panel.  All orangy and 70's looking, like that era's T-shirt art.  Anyways, Fabian stop posting porn!

And yes I believe a Bay window CAN be Cal Look

More motor will be coming soon in this one ;)

Zach, I dig your SC.  Great inspiration for me on what to do with my own.  I've left mine stock height, but I've been seriously considering lowering it when I bolt on my new rims.  Yours looks great, especially with those rims.  I have questions and will send you a note.

Funny how you can spot this bus on some vintage pics, always on the back or half-hidden by "more interesting" cars that were the theme of the pics in this era.

What happenned to the real bus ? It dissapear when the track closed down ?

Back to the subject, I hope so, my wife has a 66' bus that's in storage, planning on doing a Cal-Look Bus, stock height out back and a lowered stance up front with a nice engine. Will see when its time to do it.
Carry on gentleman!

No offense to the owners of the sometimes legendary busses, but the last few pages I have seen a lot of race busses, one of the checkboxes ticked, but needs more to be cal-look (or less  ;D). I have also seen a lot of support busses, very cool, but to be the center piece of a cal-look line up instead of lurking in the background  ??? Some campers, perfect for towing the racecar and sleeping at the track (some even race them). Finally some true 80'ties lookers, very period correct, but somehow a period I wouldn't want to be seen in  :o

Some of the entries are very close or even spot on. Dyno Don's, Jesus's and the Auto Technics bus spring to mind, though the last two could do something to loose the trim!

So, I'm not convinced! Give me more!

Or else ... Might this be the epitome of type 2 California Look? According to the seller it is, what do you think?

No, it's not mine.

Yet  ;D

People who know me do know I have a weird taste for freaks (when it comes to cars, I would never ever call my girlfriend a freak!). I did send the current owner/seller an email, but I wouldn't go as far as calling this Cal Look. I don't think I would ever be allowed into a Wunderwaffe line up.

But if this isn't a cal look bus, then what is?

Here's a shot of my '66 circa '82, either on one of my waning days of DKK or an early DBO days [I spot a DKK and SOTO sticker in the rear window]. Paul Chee, his neighbor Gordon and I had our buses featured in the '83 VW Vanagon TV commercial. Here are a few pics of that as well. Note, we raised our buses and Paul swapped his alloys for stockers for the shoot.

Wow...all these buses got my creative juices running for my project.  I already secured my alloy wheels and motor parts. Now to get started on the body once my chop has the motor in and is back on the road.  That blue standard panel with the 911 fan and IDA's says it all!  The single cab pick up is clean too!  Nice posts Sarge!

Strictly speaking, most likely NO, Buses cannot be CalLook ... unless they can run under 15.9 in the quarter ...

Sorry, I didn't make the rules, I just remind OTHERS of them.

Having driven it a couple times before he sold it,I can tell you that Bob Cook's blue panel pictured above would certainly run under 15.9. It had/has a 2276 with IDAs,that sucker would scoot.  Another freind of ours has a oval with a 2332 and stock gears that ran 13.30s @101,and he and Bob would play from light to light leaving the local cruise in,and the bus did pretty well. It didnt have a problem showing my DD Acura taillights big time from a 75-105 rolls in the interstate..repeatedly.  :D  That thing was a blast to drive.

I didn't take too many pictures this past Classic 2011 week, mostly at the OCTO show. This Type II jumped out at me...
[attachment=1]
It's not a "Bus", but I think it has a Cal-Look inspiration for sure. Not sure if it could run the numbers either :D
A little less camber/more rake and a bigger rear tire maybe? T-Bars? 48's for sure!!!
I thought it was cool.

Could this be the best "cal Look" bus yet?

Showed up at EBI4 looking like nothing more than a nice panel with a set of 356 wheels
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v645/orb666/DSCF7220.jpg)

A poke around the inside reveals a nice steering wheels, aux gauges and a set of original 356 seats (and on further investigation it was running polished 356 drums all round, the fronts cut down to hide discs)

But then you went round the back for the money shot
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v645/orb666/DSCF7219.jpg)

and yes that is the real deal :o

Yep its mine :)
Its got 2 x adjusters in the beam and the spring plates turned 2 splines & notched to suit, shocks are 20 point spax adjustables made to length.
Wheels are 5 1/2" x 15" empi slots, front tyres are 165/50/15's, rears 185/65/15.
Front anti roll bar has been removed for clearance & the bump stops all cut down.
Its got a stock width vw beam.

I'll probably change the front tyres to 165/60/15's as theres more clearance than I was expecting, also adjustable spring plates will help when changing the rear wheels.

Not much else to say about it right now, interior wise its a walk through with 2 x 3 seaters in the back & its got a stock sp 1600 for now.
Got a few dents to fix & it'll be ready for a coat of shiney beige ;D

I believe a Bus can be Cal-Lookers. I have a 66' standard bus, in storage, that I would like to restore to a Cal-Looker. Install an IRS, at stock height, Run a 69' beam with 71' disk spindles for disk brakes, adjusters on the beam and leave it STOCK width, lowered just little, and very subtle but nice interior, Alloys all the way, and of course, a very potent IDA motor. ;D But most of all, make it fun to drive. ;)

The 69 beam is wider than a standard bus beam.  And a bay beam on a split raises the front end by 2", so by the time you have lowered it you don't have a fun drive.

You are better off getting some new Brazillian bay king and link spindles that are already setup for discs and then dropping them.

I actualy already have the. 69' beam with the 71' disk. Yes its a little wider but not much. Just need it rebuilt and adjusters put in. Don't plan on dropping it much, and I don't want it narrowed. Going to run 5 1/2" Alloys all around, should be ok.

It won't be okay, it will rub on the arches.  And as you have to lower it 2" to get it to standard split height it any further lowering means the ride is pretty bad.

Try it though and you can find out for yourself ;)

It`s a 4" narrowed ball joint beam, late Bay window disc brakes, wide five adapters and 2.5" drop spindles. On the back it`s 3.25 inch drop plates only.

Well,

I'm slowly going to the end of my 76' bay window project. All weldings are done and with the summer coming I will have more time to work on it and hopefully get it painted this fall.
I would build a cal look oriented bay window. I don't want to make a copy of how they were done back in the day as most of the time they were more custom rather our "less is more" mojo.

My goal is to apply the basics cal look rules on it.

Single color paint job. No white roof,no chrome headlight bezels or white bumpers. (I really dig a burgundy paint)
Lowered but not slam and some rack.
I have a set of 4 late 6" Fuchs still in original finish. I don't want to polish and paint them in high gloss black to stay with the utility origin of the vehicle.
Basic interior, no camper furnitures. (I think I will plasti dip the cargo floor, no worries about scratches and no plywood flooring).

Voilà, basic but I like this plan.

Do you have any advices, thoughts or ideas to share with this project?

Thanks.

All great aspects. Only advice: no rack. There are enough VWs with racks to last till the end of time and beyond. It's so refreshing to see a Bus without one.

X2, Hoping to start working on my wife's 66' bus, making it a true Cal-Look. And NO narrowed beam, and NO rack, just a slight dump and stock rear. A mild 1776cc with IDA's, I hope.  ;D

Thanks Fred ,
The stance is in part due to the home brew bug IRS conversion .
I narrowed the hubs to get the wheels in just right and retained the bug shafts in the process  8)

Here´s my 66 deluxe

It may not be perfect cal-look, but it is imported from Riverside California  ;D

Porche 944 vented discs and turbo calipers on all four wheels, sway bar, brake booster, IRS etc..
4,5"-165/60/15 up front, and 5,5"-185/70/15 at the rear.
Currently running a 1600SP with a set of 32PBIC mounted on old danish "TOBU" manifolds. Hope to have the 356 engine running for next season.

I put in a blistering quarter mile of 19.5 with my 1641 at 96 bugjam "pictured" I thought i was flying  :D
Wheels were B blasted eagles and the interior was trimmed out in grey to match the bumpers .
I bloody loved piloting that truck around  8)

Blimey i  remember this truck well.

Finally got the 1966 356/912 industrial engine "deindustrialised" with a 1720cc biral cylinder kit, Elgin 66509 camshaft, a custom-built  exhaust etc. etc.
The 13w is now running better than ever - I´m loving everything about this new engine!  .....and it has working heating and exhaust is not too loud, so the family loves it too   ;)
VW should have had that M356/912 option back in 1966  ;D ;D ;D

I have an adjustable stock beam,Kieft&Klok dropped spindels and adjustable coil over shocks in the front. In the rear I have lowered the bay a bit more than 1 outer spline.
Riding comfort is really nice...

This is my bus and I feel like it's Cal-Look inspired. It's a 1976 right hand drive double sliding door panel that was assembled in Johannesburg, S.A. It has a type 1 engine from the factory as well as a lot of other weird stuff not found on the U.S. market bays that I've grown up with. I bought it a few years ago ago from the originals owner's son.  I lowered it with spindles and put a set of fake gas burners on it. the engine is a balanced 1914 but otherwise stock. I had a friend make up some vinyl graphics inspired by the inch pincher too.  I occasionally use it as a parts hauler/mobile advertisement for my shop.

It's been a long time I didn't post anything but I found this cool.
It's a scan I made out of a magazine and the pics was taken during Bug Jam 2000 (UK).
Also, I read with lot's of interest Russel's post about bus and rat look craze in the magazine and the hobby en général. A bus is a lot's to work to properly restore. I'm knee deep in a 76 bay window resto and what a job! I hope to turn it into a Cal look, hopefully this year (  ::) ). Let's see how the hobby will evolve when people will get tired of seeing always the same ratty, rusty full of junk cars that are filling the meeting nowadays.
By the way, a bus like this scream cal look and his a ride I would gladly been seen in  ;)

here're 2 old pictures , on the 1st we can see that the bus had ansen wheels

hey cool to drag his out again as my neighbor is now working on the chick iverson bus. his boss bought it and now they are restoring it. he actually doesn't know the 'history' of the bus, so i will fill that in for him. my neighbor is working after his shift on the bus to get it all good again. looks like a nice project.
but i looked at the pictures a bit better and found that the one that ran ansen wheels wasn't a two door bus. where there different ones in the 60' and 70's as well?

the later one and the new one have both double doors.

i think there were two busses… one double door and one single door. look at the pictures with the sprintstars and the one with the ansens.

Here's my 69 original paint Deluxe, I spent last summer driving around Europe in it. Greatest trip of my life and I'd recommend it to everyone

It has a 0.82 4th with a 4.57 R&P hooked up to a 2109cc motor, 44IDF's and an Engle 120

Thanks,
It is all original paint, just buffed a few times to make it shiny again.  The bus has the usual rocker/dogleg/windshield rust, but the floors are mostly solid.  It is our new cheap daily driver family truckster, and I am using it to prototype my newly designed spindles and hybrid beam combo.  Working good so far!

My then 8 year old son spotted it down a side street in tiny town Wyoming.  He and my dad left a note on the old guys door, and the guy called me back, and we made a deal.  It had a small engine fire, and the guy parked it for 12 years till I bought it.  Its got some dents and rust, but we drive the crap out of it, and I dont have to worry about the parking lot at the soccer field.

Here are a couple pics of the new spindles I built.  These were just before I finished up the caliper brackets.  The new spindles are 3.5" lowered, about 1/2" narrowed, corrected Ackerman angle, use new modern hub assemblies, giant calipers, and 10.5" vented rotors.  All of the parts are super easy to get at any parts store in the country.  They are built to work with a new bolt-in hybrid beam I built.  The beam has the bottom tube moved up 1.5" so it has the same ground clearance as a split beam.  If you have ever driven a lowered Bay, you know how low the beam is, and how much 1.5" will help.  The spindles and beams will be in production soon, and I already have a Willwood caliper option, and a 12" rotors shouldn't be to far away.
