Title: Euro scene in the 80's...
Post by: xavier on January 10, 2011, 21:29:02 pm
I was going through some old 80's magazines last night and found some features on bugs from back in the day.

Here are some pics. Sorry no scans...

Note: That first batch is coming from Chromes & Flammes(a Euro mag published in 4 languages!!!! French, Dutch, English & German). A magazine with an editorial more oriented US cars, Rods, Customs,...

Enjoy ??? :D

That car makes me puke everytime I see pictures of it.  It just screams out cocaine lifestyle...lol.  No offense to the builder, as I know there will be those who will come in and say "the craftsmanship is absolutely outstanding."  That may be true, but IMO some things just don't need to be made, and the Pink Lady is one of those cars.

I think Dave Chappelle could have used it in a Tyrone Biggums sketch on Chappelle's Show.  Perhaps in a fantasy scape where Tyrone is a crack kingpin...lol. ;D

In the 80's we had a lot of nice street racecars in germany . We raced in public race at Hockenheim , Giebelstadt Austria ..
It was popular to use the new bumpers on an old car. Like my first racer  which is still in good hands

Show like that it's probably better to keep your mouth shut :) Maybe it was cut/edited that way or he wasn't manuscripted to any drama or maybe he was just Scandinavian/Nordic who focuses on getting his job done rather than talk about it?

First Finnish "Cal Look" feature in magazines from 1981. The parts availability (like wheels, "buggy ET" Sprint Stars were probably available at least second hand) in here wasn't the same then as now and some stuff got perhaps lost in translation.. The text in the article well describes what the Look is about.

Swedish Cal Looker pictured about the same time in Sko Uno drag races in Mantorp:

When things really when downhill stylewise in here was late 80's after the Finnish version of "Popular Mechanics" had a grand idea of having a series of How to build Cal Looker. It was around the end of an era when Beetle was still considered a cheap economical car as a first car, they were dirt cheap and too perfect candidate for such magazine series. It resulted a lot of pastel coloured enthusiasm with horrible mods which you can still see in the cars for sale forums. A lot of projects were started, never finished and ended up scrapped (two guys that I've worked with have offered a free Beetle if I only would fetch it from their parents/grandparents/summer cabin etc).

I don't know how much that trend of localised Cal Look contributed to the VW scene in general, making it stronger or making parts available  ???

About the wild white one with seagull doors and Ford racing stripes, was that Swedish?
Does anyone have more information about it?

Indeed, it was to me the very first cal look in France and owned by a "Rod & Custom" magazine member Christian Tahon. All the project has been done with the pure cal look design pre requisite.
All the Chrome & Flames" stuff was not good at all at this period. More often poor customs projects.
I'll post some pics of the VW stuff in France in the 80's later on.

Cheers
V.

Built by a swedish guy called Martin Westerlind, a 24 year old engineer.Took him 3000 hours.
Chassis is made of 75 meter of square tubing. Motor and box came from Porsche(Turbocharged Flat-six + 915).
Wheels are Magnesium BBS(11x15 fronts & 14x15 rears with 305/35).
1.90 m wide and 1.20 m high.

Welcome Vincent!
I remember Christian Tahon's car very well. I recently found the "Rod et Custom" 4-page poster and it is now proudly displayed in my garage.
You may not remember me, but we were both part of the same club, some 25 years ago. I even kept a flyer you designed back then, which I picked up at one of the indoor shows - possibly Autofestival in Paris.

Cool Stephan... I didn't put a face on your first name... I'm getting old.
That's funny because my "80's Cal look" project paint job will use the same linear design as this drawing that I've done "so long ago" ... revival isn't it  ?
What were you driving at this period ?
Cheers

I was driving the Ford Peppermint green '65 seen on the right side of this pic. Car was typical of the era (slammed, dechromed, one-piece window). When was the last time you saw a bra?  :)
Picture from the caravan to the '88 Southwest Bug-In. We ended up with over 100 cars.
Can't wait to see your '80s-style project car!
