Ed Craig is the one who "decorated" the car to look like that !
It was for a VW day at Disney Land and decorating your car was part of the festivities.
It had something to do with the release of one of the Herbie movies.
It was all temporary and removed afterwards.
I was able to have a nice talk with both Ed Craig and Mike Mahaffey together about the car at Bug-In 32

And what did car guys outside of the VW scene think about Mike's split?

That was a fun era, height of the muscle car scene. The cruise scene was on Harbor Blvd. going between Big Carl’s and Taco Villa - straight out of American Graffiti. We were the anti-muscle car crowd that was basically laughed at. Before I built my car a fast street VW ran in the high 15’s or 16’s, hardly a threat to the muscle cars. The really fast VW’s were strip only – the Inch Pincher, Schley Bros, Vittone, etc. But no one that I knew of was using that technology in a daily driver street car. So I decided to go for it. Ron Fleming and I built the motor at Gene Berg’s shop when he first moved to Orange from Washington. I had it dyno’d by Dean Lowry. After a full pulls he just looked at us and said we were crazy, “you can’t drive this on the street. It has more hp than my Inch Pincher did a year ago.”  We just smiled, said “we’ll see”. Actually it worked far better than we had even hoped. It was a torque monster that pulled right off of idle. I’m sure the Vertex magneto helped a lot. Ron did a great job on the heads. Suddenly, I had a legitimate low 13-second street car, with fan belt, muffler, and Pirelli’s. American cars needed to have slicks and uncorked headers to run faster than that. Anyway, back to the muscle car street scene. They’d never seen a fast VW on the street before. I’ll share three of my favorite memories. I was cruising through the car hop section in the back of Big Carl’s and a guy in a Chevelle stuck his head out and started laughing at my car. I stopped backed up, bounced the front end a little and did a major burn out lifting the front wheels a few inches. I went back around, stopped in front of his car, yelled out “want to race that piece of s#*t.?” The look on his face was priceless as he slumped in his seat and everyone around was laughing. Another time I was alone driving at night on Harbor Blvd. in La Habra. I pulled up next to a 1968 Mustang fastback. He was obviously very proud of his car as he still had the white shoe polish bracket time of 11.85 on his windshield, presumably from Wed. night bracket racing at OCIR the night before. So I revved him off. He and his buddy just looked at me and started laughing. Obviously he didn’t take me seriously. He just pulled away rather quickly and I stayed a half a car back then punched it and lurched ahead of him. I’ll never forget the looks on their faces as they snapped their heads toward me in disbelief. So we pulled up to the next intersection (fortunately traffic was very light, no one else around). Now he knew I was serious. Watching the side yellow light anticipating the green light, we both took off burning. I shut it down when my speedo said 100-mph and I had him by about 2 open cars. He turned left, I turned right, splitting up in case a cop saw us. I would have liked to have heard their conversation after that. Shortly thereafter I was without my car at Taco Villa and we approached a crowd engaged in some animated story telling. Standing back and listening I heard them talking about an 11-second street VW. Man, I was wondering where the heck is that car. I didn’t know of any that fast. Then one of the guys from the crowd that knew me and had set up some races for me that he made some good money on whispered to me “they’re talking about your car.” I couldn’t get any more races from that crowd after that.

I think at one point Mahaffey's car did have a 2074cc in it built by him, Ron Fleming and Gene Berg. I think Ron did the heads. I know Mike mentioned on CLF it ran 48IDAs, Vertex mag and they had DDS dyno it and Dean was scratching his head saying something about "you guys are nuts running THIS on the street..."

There is a short mention in the 1970 Hot Rod article about the car too, running IDAs and a cam similar to I/Gas cars of the day.

One of the all time coolest hot rod VW's ever. AWESOME pictures!!!

that's what i read in the bible a few weeks ago as well.
apparently it put out more horses than the DDS gasser or something...  ;D

When I had it the license plate was UOT 994. I never had blue plates. The picture of it brown was taken at a Bug In at OCIR. It was only brown for a short while. I had Becker's paint it 1970 Porsche Conda Green. That's when I had the chrome removed. I left the bumper slots incase I got a ticket for not running bumpers, but I never used nerf bars or anything else - no chrome anywhere. The one interior black and white shot looking down toward the dash is after I had it. The other shots are what I had done. The seats had a black rectangular insert pattern. If I could figure out how to insert pictures here I would post some.

Hopefully my pictures appear. These pictures are not high quality. I wasn't into photography then. Most of the pictures you see were taken by other people. Jeff Aronson, Greg's brother, took the ones in Cal Look book.

Title: Re: Mike Mahaffery's 51 Split
Post by: mgmahaffey on April 11, 2007, 18:34:51 pm
No, I was working at a upholstery supply warehouse during college and an auto upholsterer customer of ours from Fullerton did the work. I chose him because he cut me a good deal and he was good. It was during my employment there that I met another upholsterer, Don Bradford, and introduced him to the VW scene. But I did take auto upholstery classes in the 90's at the local community college and did an interior for a '63 Ghia that has yet to be restored.

I had the 2180cc in it at that time. That was the biggest available at the time. It had an 82mm SPG roller with 92cc NPRs. I don't think the German companies made pistons and cylinders that big then (don't hold me to everything, my memory gets a little cloudy here) I had a 2074cc when it was brown but that disingrated halfway down the strip at Lions in Long Beach. The crank was a 78mm welded stroker - no counterweights. About the only thing available then other than the welded ones were Okrasa cranks, but I couldn't afford that. I was just a college student going to school full time and working part time, so I had very little money, spending every dime I had on my car (well, I left a little for beer money at the end of our rallys at Shakeys. Sarge would remembers those days, probably why my memory is a little cloudy ;-) Anyway, I figured the SPG roller would last. I couldn't afford to blow up another motor. This car was my only transportation and if it broke on Sunday I didn't have a ride to school on Monday. Our cars were not second-car toys, they were all we had, so they got driven everywhere daily. So my building such a big motor was risky for a "daily driver" - a term we never used. Plus no one to my knowledge had never done it before - at least Dean Lowry had never heard of it. I don't remember the cam but Ron Fleming swears it was an Engle 130 but I don't think it was that big. Ron did the heads, experimented with a D shape. I had bigger intakes but couldn't afford bigger exhaust valves. I used a holley fuel pump and a Vertex magneto with a 6-volt starter, 48 ida's - started instantly. Anyway it ran great on the street, a real torquer, better than anyone thought it would. Gene Berg cut me special 3rd and 4th gears to go with the limited slip. With the solid steel mounts and no engine compartment insulation, it was very noisy - couldn't even hear my 8-track, so I took it out. I never broke anything after that. But I did only run Pirelli's and not slicks and came off the line at only about 3500rpm (didn't want to break the tranny or spin the roller) and still ran in the low 13's. And drove it to school on Monday.

With all the current speed parts and big horsepower of today, it's hard to truely appreciate Mike's accomplishments of long ago.  I remember taking an all to short ride in Mike's car when it had the 2180; how it litteraly blew those poor Pirelli's away and how easily the back-end came out on the second gear shift...then the close ratio's...unbelievable back then!  One other thing...Don Bradford who Mike introduced to VW's at upholsery class years ago is the guy behind Brad's Upholstery and the "fat biscuit" Cal Look interior!  Good stuff, Mike...keep it coming!!  ;D 8)

I owned the car when those pics where taken.  I was at disneyland for contest and was trying to make it look like a 50's lowrider.  The "dingle balls" window etching...and flaames, were all fake, (along with the shoe shine white walls).  My wife in the pic had more flames in the bag that we were attaching.  The competed car was used in a VW book about Bugs shortly after.

It looked so bad, I was actually embarressed to drive it that day, but it did get a pretty good laugh.

Most of the pics here are when I owned the car.  (except when it was brown, or with the gold 8 spokes) The pics supplied by speedwell, and the ones with the white walls are when I owned.   Mike had it when it was brown, and also while green with black plates.  I had it with blue plates and BRMs.  I sold it witn CHrome wheels, (sold the BRM's seperatly), and the next owner put the gold 8 spoke on it.

Here's the story about the whitewalls and flames stuff. Didney was just about th release Herbie the love bug, and had a contect at Disneyland for VW's you had to "dress up" you are to be judged.  Finialst would get to drive down mainstreet in disneylad.  the winner got a new VW.  3 cless, humor, patroic, or nostaliga.  I picked the last, and ried to make my car look lkke a typical 50's low rider.  The girl in the pic is my wife.  Inside the bag she's holding at some stick-on flames.  The white walls are shoe polished on,  The green dingleballs in the windows were taped on.  The window etching is a decal.  I even had a green "brodie" knob the the steering wheel, and white dice hanging on the mirror.

It looked so bad I was actually embarressed to drive down there in the morning.  I was afraid people might think it was the "normal" look of the car.  Unfortunetly, I didn't make it look silly enough.  I wasn't a semi finalist, but the car behind me that looked like a giant pickle made it thru.

Currently, the car is red with BRM's again.  The current owner has had it in storage for 25 plus years and might try to bring it to the VW Classic this year.

This car has some great memories for all past owners.  It was well know with Mike as one of the fastest street cars around.  It was the first split wndow I ever saw, (back when it was still brown).  At the time I had no idea ithat I'd buy the car in a few years.  Mike sold it too me with a 1600 motor.  I just got married, so funds where limited, plus it was my daily driver, so never was able to put a big motor back into it.  he work I did was more fine tuning details on the car. For me, it was just a fun car to drive.  Many car rallies..many trips to Dodger games...even more camping in it out in the desert.  It went everywhere!

The current owner seems to have many good memories too.  All around great car!

I love 8-spokes, in fact I've had a set in my attic for years waiting......., but they just don't look right on a split.

There are some awesome pictures here of Mahaffery/Craig's car but one interior shot is actually of my car.
I think I've seen more of the car here than when Ed Craig and I were in DRA together.

Great thread

I'm guessing this is your interior dude  :) I was wondering about this pic as I did notice the gauges were different ;) And I know what you mean about 4lug 8's on a split - it just looks alittle wierd,

One thing I have been noticing is Mikes/Ed's COOL rear T bars - I am guessing he made these himself  :)

Pity that pic wasn't taken a bit further back and to the left a bit , would have been cool to get another pic of the two splits  8)

I'll post some more things on Monday about my car. But this weekend it's off to Phoenix for the Bugorama with Hunsaker and Fleming!
Mike Mahaffey

Hi Mike,
so nice to read more storys and see unseen pic`s. Please keep us updated.
Your split is/was one of the "true-est" lookers in my point of view.

Best Greetings!

I made the t bars.  They are actually from a 356 Porsche.  I like that they were a little fated and the upper portion was pretty short.  I cut off the lower portion right about where they started to curve under the body, then re - drilled the mounting holes.  I wanted the bars to sit close to the body.

" I like that they were a little fated " Sorry dude you'll have to translate  ;)

they were one of the first little details I noticed about that car, They actually look like they could be used to push the car if needed - I always wondered how they were made and now I can see - thanks Ed ;D

Didn't Bob McClure run something similar to those t-bars on his turbo'd drag beetle? I'm sure he had thicker t-bars... Speedwell, you have a picture to confirm (or deny!)?

I prefered the 356 bars as they were shorter and angled to the body a little more.  Plus I re-drilled so they also sata little closer to the fenders too.

Okay, I'm a little late to the party, as usual. But is that a Cal Look sticker on the ¼ window on your green Split, Ed? The picture with the surfers in the background.

The pic with the surfers and the gold 8 spokes was after I sold it, so I can't say for sure about the decals.
