Title: SHUBEE PASSES
Post by: johnl on February 08, 2011, 20:33:12 pm
I just received the following e-mail and am only passing it on:

To Gary’s family and friends,

Please accept my deepest condolences.  Scott Bakken just called to tell me of Gary’s passing.  Shubee was a unique individual and a very good friend.  When he was working for me he never ceased to amaze me with his VW knowledge.  He knew part numbers and interchanges like no one I had ever met.  He will be sorely missed.

I just received that email and thought wtf.  Did a quick search and then saw he hadn't posted since January 21st.

He was a good guy and helped me out on numerous occasions to ship stuff, collect stuff and generally let me use his house like a post office.  Does anybody have more info that they can email me, I will be sending a card.

Thanks

Mike

Oh Damned!

I had been mailing him lately, trying to get more ancient knowledge on the days out of his memory. He told me he'd loved to add to the stories but was traveling and didn't have time to spend at the time. He promised to get back to me later. I was really looking forward to it as he was quite a character.

Race in Peace Shubee! Race in Peace.

Wow, I just for the email as well. Shubee was a good guy and he will be missed. Last time I spoke with him by email he didn't mention any health issues. My thoughts are with his family.

During my Auto Haus days I never really knew Gary well.  Shortly after he arrived and was working in the Buena Park Store I left for other opportunities.

My contact with Gary from that point on was through my longtime friend Mike (Mikey) Olivieri who I still see on a regular basis.  Mike worked with Gary and they both loved to eat.  For those of you who knew Gary back then you knew he was large.  There was a burger place at the corner of Manchester & Western Ave. called Starlite Burger.  The guys use to venture over and the owner was always happy to see them as they ordered tons of food.

Mikey to this day says of Starlite when the subject comes us, "Starlite, starbiright, when and where will we have diahare tonight".  It was funny, but now it makes me sad to see another longtime VW guy has left us.  Mikey and I still talk about what great cars Gary owned.....

God's speed Gary.....................

As stated earlier Gary was very heavy and I think he had surgery which can be VERY DANGEROUS with results like this.  When he was in SoCal last year for the VW events several comment that he just didn't look well.  Nothing more than my hunch.

Well, this is just a quick, get the facts straight post !!! Gary was in So Cal last weekend,
He had driven in to pick up a 66 sedan thats been parked for many many years. The plan
was to tow it home to Texas and restore it to his liking for a gift for his grandson. His
grandson is only 3, so Gary would have 13 years to do it to perfection. However, he took
ill suddenly & was in the hospital. He took a turn for the worse and had liver & kidney
failure. Fortunately, his wife Becky was able to fly in & be by his side before he passed.
Most of you know him as SHUBEE, but I knew him as Gary Shubrook. I will always consider
him my homeboy, we spent lots of time together from 1971 to 1988 when we went
different ways. Through the lounge we were able to re-connect, & he was the driving
force to getting my car running again. He is a legendary VW man & will be missed !!

Ron you speak the truth. Gary was definately Legendary!  He will be missed.  Gary had his opinions and moments but I am surely sad to see him go. When I would notice that he had posted I would almost always go to see what he had written first. He was helpful controversial and at most entertaining.  He had a good eye for what works.  He's swimming in BRM,s right now.

I never got to really know Gary that well. I talked to him at the Fort Worth Texas show last year, and out here a few times. What bothers me is that Gary is one of us. Our age, our passion, our same VW DNA. It's not suppose to turn out that way when you drive a fast VW. I think about his collection of VW parts and cool cars, his work shop, his dreams of how he planned to spend the next years of his life with his family. I do know, he is now in a better place.

The best car I have ever bought/appreciated and later sold was in fact Gary's BEAUTIFUL blue oval window with built trans/a monster 48 equipped beast/vdo/plaid int/brm's,etc....which showed his talents at building and assembling with meticulous fashion and attention to detail, an awesome daily driver that drove like grandmothers car until you pressed the pedal...SHIT or HOLD ON...I had lots of fun driving that car and can say it was one of the very best vw's ever amongst my many. This is Garys wife...  Yes shocked, tearful and missing him already. I was told about all the post and joined so I could see the
post from friends and associates.
He had some chronic condition but not a terminal. He has lymphademia and Neuropathy but he didnt let that keep him down. He left two weeks ago to come to calif to pick up a VW bug from a nephew and it was to be Our grandsons first "Project" and his first Car when he tured 16 years old. Cadan presently is only 3 yrs old but shares his passion for Cars and especially VW Bugs with his  Peepaw (gary).
I do plan on continuing his dream and by the time Cadan is 16 he will recieve a gift of a Shubee Quality VW bug and it will be from his Peepaw.....that he loves so much.
We are all shocked, crying and very emotional.
His Illness that brought his life to a end was Sudden (3days) and Snowballed (bowel obstruction followed by Liver and kidney failure). Gary fought hard to stay on this earth with his family and friends
but it was his time to join the good lord above.  he
He will be always remembered.....always loved and always Missed by all.
Please if you have any pictures please sent them to me at rsshubrook@gmail.com  we are preparing a slide show for his memorial service which the dates will be announced.
Thank you again,

Becky Shubrook

This is very sad news, I've had a lot of interesting conversations with him both prior and after meeting him in real life at DKP cruise night in 08. He was a knowledgeable and highly skilled man, and refreshingly free spoken. I respected his opinions on all things cal-look and loved his fresh twists on the subject. The world has now become a duller place. My thoughts goes to his family and friends, you have suffered a big loss, as have we all...

Post by: TexasBug on February 09, 2011, 22:33:47 pm
Gary Shubrook called one afternoon, then came by my house to pick up a pair of '62-'67 tail light housings.  He told me that he was heading out early the next morning to California to pick up a '66 Beetle. He was going to hook up and tow this Beetle back to Texas and needed the housings and bulb holders to support his tow lights.

I had no more contact with Gary until a VW friend called from Corsicana to tell me the sad news that Gary had passed.

I enjoyed talking with Gary and learned a lot of VW lore and parts information from him.  After 17 years working the VW parts desk, the man had a lot of knowledge stored in his head.  And, he was never stingy with his knowledge!  I can still hear his quiet voice explaining the ins and outs of one part or another.  His cars sport a number of parts from my VW parts stash.

Gary was a familiar figure at all VW events in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, especially, and elsewhere in Texas.  His '67 Beetle is a fine car.  And...he was working on a '58 Bug as well.

We here will miss Gary.  I still cannot believe that he is gone.  He will long be remembered as a Pillar in the Volkswagen Community.

Good-bye, Gary!

Texas Bug (jay salser)

I am still looking for ways to express how deeply I feel the loss of my very dear and close friend , William Gary aka "Shubee" Shubrook. :'( :'( :'(

I was the lucky one who was able to spend a little shop time with him at my home recently to help prepare his eagerly awaited new project for his Grandson that he was so proud of. I was able to spend two quality days with him, working side by side with the same goal and desire. It was just like old times when we first met in 1975. Had I only known.... :'(

THERE IS NO SCHOOL LIKE OLD SCHOOL!!!

With his embrace of the Internet and his passion for cars and Volkswagens in particular, he will truly be missed around the World.

My deepest sympathy's are with his wife family

May God Bless him

Proud to be his friend, Bruce

Becky just told me over the phone about these posts and I had to login and read them. It's obvious that even those who only knew him via phone and internet could tell just what a great and genuine guy Gary was. I think that's the most amazing thing about Gary. The Shubee Charm.

I met him at Barrett's and later worked with him at Small Car. He introduced me to a bunch of guys just like him.... quick witted, sharp tongued, VW encyclopedias. Actually, CAR encyclopedias. But some of my favorite memories are when he and I'd go "yardin'". I felt like a kid brother as we'd peruse the wrecking yard in search of rare parts.. which he'd make me remove. The best ( or worst :) ) was when we came across a 1967 Chevy II up on blocks. It was pretty well gone through and it looked like someone drained all the oil and trans fluid right there under the car! He gave it the once over and when he looked inside I heard "Oh, MF... it's a four speed. That bell housing is hard to find.......  Go get it for me." Of course there was no way I was going to climb through all that greasy mud under there and I told him so. Yeah... no way...  sure there wasn't. Gary grabbed an old sheepskin seat cover out of the junker next to it, handed it to me and said "There you go". But the best part... after I pulled the trans, dumping the rest of the fluids out of the bad crank and input shaft seals, drug myself out covered in grease and handed him the bell housing he said to me....wait for it.... "How you getting home? You're not riding in the Lumina like that."

Sorry for the long post, but I knew Gary 25 years. He was like a Big Brother to me in every way. He even hit me with a Stinger Baffle once. We laughed about that.... much later. So yes, Pray for Becky and the Family. Pray that Gary's up there with his "Ma" laughing like he always does. But Please also pray for the friends that knew him well. The ones that knew him much better than I do. This roads gonna be a lot longer than a 1/4 mile.

I don't know if there's a Nabisco up in heaven, but I do know that Gary's at the line, next to GOD and when the flag drops he just may Whole Shot him :)

You're bringing back some memories with the house story, Dave. It was on Patritti Ave. I remember it because he used to call it "Patritti Raceway" and he gave me my first ride in a 10 second car down that street. He called the car Mr. Tibbs. I don't think he ever timed it, but if Gary said it was a "10-second car" then I have no doubts.

It was about 10 PM and we just got back from the In-N-Out, in the Scirocco I think. He just had the muffler run under the car on Tibbs... first one I'd ever seen... and he had to fire it up. He ran it up and down the street to warm it up and then said hop in. So.... long dark street with maybe 4 light posts, cars parked on both sides so there was barely enough room to call it a lane. Gary starts Tibbs off with a roll to be nice to the trans and then NAILS IT! Of course he had a Deist belt for himself, but nothing for the passenger. That thing set me back so hard I was grabbing the seat bottom so I wouldn't end up in the back seat! I don't know which one of us was laughing harder :)

Patritti Raceway !

Hang on Rich, I'm scanning my old photos as fast as I can. I've got hundreds in albums, drawers, envelopes,
etc. I finally figured out the scanning / zoom / retouch / procedure. I ran across some from '75,76, & '77
last night. I' ll do my best to get them on here this weekend. Everyone here on the lounge will not believe
the pics I found.  The stories of the room are great --- I knew him when it was EMPTY    Ron

I will start the "vintage Shubee" with his second VW. This was a 69 from a friend in El Monte.
He had it painted Beige basecoat with gold pearl & clearcoat. The EMPI 8 spokes painted bright
gold mini-metalflake really set it off. This is the car he had while working at Autohaus in Pomona.

This is his next venture. We found this very clean stock '69 Ghia in a used car lot in Glendale, Ca.
A deal was made & he started making plans for a weber motor & wheels. This was in 1976, he
found a set of 2.0 litre alloys & installed a small motor with 42 DCNF Berg specials. Very good choice
since at the time the DVB clubhouse was 40 miles from his home in Baldwin Park. He made that trip
every week for meetings. The scanned photos of a 110 photo that is 25 years old are not as clear
as the digitals of today, so I apologize. The attention to cleanliness & detail is already evident. This
exercise is actually very therapeutic for me.  :D

In late 76 or early 77 a few of us left the large DVB club & started our own small club Der Selten Kafers
We wanted something a little closer to home & wanted to have a say so on the QUALITY of the cars.
The name means "The Rare Beetles" so we tried to include "old" cars as well as newer cars that were
unique or just clean & required dual carbs. These are a few pics of the oldest car in our club. the first
shows SHUBEE testing the t-bars. This car belongs to Steve Walker -- a 52 vert named OL' RAGU. Note :
the porsche brakes behind those real BRM's ENJOY the OLD SCHOOL. Hey Steve if you're out there you can
provide details on the engine.

Ron, those are great photos of a couple of Gary's early cars. His Ghia was one of the cleanest...but then, it was almost a new car back then.
As for those of my "Ol Ragu"...I've never seen those pictures before THANKS!
As for a motor, it was straight out of the Gene Berg shop and his thinking. A 1776, heads and manifolds ported by Gene, an Engle 110, 42DCNF's with an 1 5/8 inch merged header. At the time it was what was going on, now it gets called "Old School"

Jon, Ah YES, Patritti Raceway. None of were really thinking back then, but Gary's street was sure narrow. Some of those hard runs he took allof us on...we woudln't be doing that these days, would we?

That we all recall with fondness those who have gone. It's sad, too bad Gary didn't get to see what is being shared about him.

And I know that there are some here on the Lounge that felt no warmth for Gary. Too bad that that had to be, but the world would be rather boring if each of us all saw eye to eye.

well, i haven't been on here much recently.....cars are a low priority for me at the moment.......but this is really sad news, Gary helped me out with various bits of advice over the last few years via this fantastic forum.

Thankyou Gary!  car guys from all over the globe will miss you.

if there are cars in heaven then please let there also be 48IDA's.

it's ironic all cars on this page have trim. :)

That's because even back then, not everybody dechromed their cars, I personally have been doing this since '81 and have owned well over 70 cars and none have been dechromed. My deepest condolences to Garys family, you are never prepared for this

I know what you mean Died, Gary was a great one for adding fuel to a fire, and one of his favourite little "arguments" was the use of chrome trim on Cal Lookers! :D I never met him or really even conversed much with him, but did look forward to seeing what he'd written in response to discussions. Sometimes I got the impression that he'd type first and think later, but sometimes I think he'd write things just to see what reaction he'd get, and having read postings from those that had known him personally, I'm inclined to think that the latter is the case more often than I realised!
He will be missed, by more than just his immediate family and friends. RIP Gary.
Neil

Thanks for posting the info John, I got the e-mail this morning but can't get on this site on my work
computer. I hope we can put this together with our Bugs for Breakfast. From Whittier it is a 12.5
mile drive through the streets. I figure about 40 minutes or so. I think it would be very fitting if 25
or 35 cars show up!! It's all up to the lounge & the power of the 'net.                    Ron

Gary would have loved that ..... a cruise in his honor with his friends.

Yes Gary was opinionated but those who knew Gary knew he was good at what he did.  His Cars were great
quality and he never did anything half ass. Everything down to the bolts were correct.

I walked thru the garage today and was trying to remember what color he had decided on for the 58 Rag top. He
had changed his mind a few times whether to keep it the oringinal color or change it. Then I looked at the 67 Vw...
I decided I want it checked out and think I might might drive it to the shows around here with our Grandbaby. Let him
show it as His and Peepaws Car....... then Last I pulled the cover off the 67 Nova... I still am in Aw  when I see it.  Wow
he did a awsome job on that car.  Made me smile thinking about the times I dragged him Out of the Garage because I was
hungry or ready for bed and it was already 10 or 11pm.  Wishing I could go drag him out again tonight..... Missing Him terribly!!
Life wont be the same without my husband.

I think a Cruz in honor to Gary from Ruby's in Whittier to the Church would be very nice. The parking lot at the church is BIG, I use to go there. Plenty of room for 35+ VW's. Good idea Ron. I'm in.

I wish I could be at the memorial but I am unable to but if there is anything I can do to help let me know. I do not know if Gary had an engine for the 58 rag top but if he did have the parts to have it build I would love to build this motor for you free of labor. Let me know

Very cool & generous gesture, Frenchy.

I was just up to their home this past weekend ... picked up Gary's '67 to get it running and serviced for Becky to be able to drive and take Cadan, their grandson, cruising.
Becky gave us a tour of the house and garage/shop ... sure enough, the engine was there on his stand, covered and awaiting the pushrods we were going to measure for and cut to complete the longblock.
He's building a 2332 with Tim's stage 2 heads and an FK10 ...
Excellent and outstandingly detailed work all the way around on all his projects, and the shop is in perfect order awaiting the next operation.

... Cadan helped me load the '67 for transport!

Anytime Becky!

Got the '67 running like a watch, now it's time for a detail and I'll post some more.
It's really been great working on Gary's '67, even more so than my own. Can't wait to see you driving it!

This car was just exactly Shoob's way ... everything is just right, awaiting the first drive ... perfect stance, perfect look ... old school all the way.

Great pictures Tom...  Garys 67 does look good  :)  I have to figure out how to strap a car seat in the back seat so we can take Cadan for a ride on a regular basis.   Thanks again for taking care of everything for me.   I appreciate it.    When Cadan sees that picture he says  thats Cadan with Peepaw's Bug.
