It's so weird that the current owner of Thunderbird Headers/exhaust products makes a merged single QP but not dual...

What about the Flat4 dual quiet pack? Is that a good product?

The look is good and I'm thinking of getting one for my 1904cc. I heard it's being tucked far from the rear of the car when it's used with a merged header, but for me that will be for use with a 1"3/8 non-merged header (and it seems that they are made for using with a non-merged header : longer tube after the flange).

I think Dave's car had T-Bird dual QPs, but maybe somebody can verify?

I like the Flat-4 mufflers, but I don't think anybody stateside here in the U.S. sells them.  Plenty of Flat-4 accessories, like the steering wheels and BRMS and what not, but I don't believe anyone here sells their exhaust and engine products...at least not that I'm aware of.

If I remember well you can get it at CSP, but it will cost you a lot to get one shipped to USA...

Here's a couple of scanned pics of my old tullip yellow '70 with a 1 5/8" Berg Phoenix set up.  The Berg set-up always looked meaner IMO because it really tucked the mufflers up into the fender, making the chrome tips level or even pointing slightly downward.   8)  The red '69 was also mine running a Phoenix 1 1/2" set up.

Sorry for the poor quality of the pics.

Steve, your Kab with the T-bars was just perfect for me! It just "worked.

Back on topic, although without pictures, I used the Bugpack duals on my Ghia, but I bent them on a kerb - not like StreetVWs brother though - I did mine while reversing into a parking spot... I'll be rebuilding them for the Beetle soon though, and I'll be paing particular attention to getting them to fit the wing line!

Yes but if I remember well he had a merged header so he made the tube after the flange shorter. I have to search on his website. Thanks for the pic Fabs  ;)

Only this rather dark one I'm afraid.

This was taken nearly 10 years ago, so the design may have changed.

Yep Fabs that's it, he mounted the Flat4 on a merged header so it wasn't good and he only shortened the tube. On my engine I'll have a standard header.

Under the back of a late model with bumpers and non-merged header I don't think there's a need to shorten the flange tube, but yes I would have to check if it's too wide or not.

Can anybody tell me what the tubing size is on the old (berg/Phoenix/S&S/other brand) small flange QP's (between the mufflers where the flange is)? I could also use a measurement of how far apart the tips are from each other. Thanks for the help.  ;)

...back in England before Volksworld etc I subscribed to Hot VWs and there was an article about exhaust design which I think S&S helped with.  This had tube length and diameters etc.  I don't have this any more.  It would have been about the time of the HotVWs 20th anniversary.  Does anyone have this for the answers?

Hope this helps!

Sept. 1986 Hot VWs, the same issue with the horrifically gaudy "Top Gun" full custom of Ed Papac, had an article about exhaust system and header design, featuring a Q&A with the head of S&S Headers, I believe.  I was just reading it the other day.

If I remember right they did not have the dual quiet pack mufflers for the Ghias at the time I made my own as the angle at the rear would be straight across in line with the bumper to look correct. I was working on my motor tonight for the Ghia which I will be starting on this project next year about this time. Right now I am concentrating on the NSU project. The engine for the Ghia is a 1755 CC 69 x 90 NPR. I just finish rebuilding my 48 IDA'S this week and ready to bolt them on the motor. I will probably be posting pictures of it in a few weeks.

This is a nice one :-)
I have made the first 20 years ago for race cars that needed a muffler. Now we use them on all race cars up to 315 hp and some on the street. Mufflers are from 50mm - 3" .
My last one is a step muffler ,from 60-65-70 mm . I will see how it works

I used Beetle QPs on the merged header on my Ghia so that the tips were level with the bumpers. I was less worried about the angle of the boxes than about how far out the tips and centre stuck out! All Bugpack IIRC.

After reading some of the recent feedback on LowBugget, I don't think I'll be shopping there anytime soon.  As for my own recent experiences, I shot him an email asking about a single Kadron part, and didn't get a reply for like two weeks.

Here´s my 67 with a JSC (Johnnys Speed and Chrome?) Dual Quiet pack that I bought at EBI4.
I don´t like how it fits, but I don´t want to modify the Berg header or the mufflers so I will try with some other headers. It sounds nice with the 1848 engine.

Hey guys, I have a thunderbird dual quiet pack laying around. But it's different then all others on here. The mufflers are bolted to the centre Y piece. So it's in three pieces. It says thunderbird on the mufflers. Does anyone know something about this system? How old would it be?

Post by: bugnut68 on August 05, 2011, 01:01:57 am
Hey guys, I have a thunderbird dual quiet pack laying around. But it's different then all others on here. The mufflers are bolted to the centre Y piece. So it's in three pieces. It says thunderbird on the mufflers. Does anyone know something about this system? How old would it be?

Sounds like an early to mid '80s T-bird dual QP set up for a large three-bolt flange heater box header.  If I remember correctly, those large three-bolt flange headers had 1.5 inch tubing.

@ Bugnut68. Yes it has a large flange three bolt connection. I figured it would be old but not that old!
@fredy66 That looks like the one i have. Mine was installed on a non merged header. But the angle of the Y piece looks to be the same.  Funny thing is that the flange had 1 bolt on the underside and 2 at the top. When i bought a A1 muffler i had to cut off the flange and rotate it 180 degrees to fit the header.

I can't help but wonder what they were thinking when they made those systems back in the day... I can't imagine it would cost that much less to make it a three piece muffler kit rather than weld it all together! ;D

As I posted earlier, I have this setup but without the merged header. If you ask me, the dumb part isn't that they make the mufflers bolt to the "Y" seperately, it's that they made this setup from 1.5" tubing but the collector is like 2.5" diameter (tunability goes out the window!)!!! :o What the hell where they thinking by adding the large collector to an otherwise decent setup? I fabbed up my own merged collector to replace the large flange portion, but I need to weld it together and finish the inner cone part. I was even able to make the merged colllector 7" long (which hopefully will help the bottom end of my single port). Thunderbird systems are cool though!  I'm thinking of adding stainless flared tips but I'm not sure how to go about it quite yet....I'm concentrating on finishing the stainless 1-1/2" heater boxes I built and the merged collector before I start on the exhaust tips. I did also think of getting rid of the "Y" part between the mufflers, and welding the mufflers at the correct angle like Berg mufflers are.

I'm thinking of modifying the muffler to but i see when the new engine is inn the car.
this muffler was not meant for merged header we See what i can do.

Udo have you a photo of this system fitted to a car ? Are they available to buy ?

I hope that AJ's making these!

After reading some of the recent feedback on LowBugget, I don't think I'll be shopping there anytime soon.  As for my own recent experiences, I shot him an email asking about a single Kadron part, and didn't get a reply for like two weeks.

Not to be a dick but did you try calling him?  When I worked for AJ couple years ago he had a few duel quiet packs made not sure if he's got more right now or those ame ones?  Just bugs me when people bash him he is a good guy in my book and he's on the phone hekping customers all day long.

  OK soapbox dismounted.

My issue really wasn't as influential on my decision so much as the HUGE pile of unhappy customers in his feedback thread over on the Samba.  Now, I know that everyone has a bad day here and again, or get buried with business and don't always have the utmost in communication... but I recommend taking a hard look at Chuey's experience in that feedback thread.  There's never any call for physical assault in resolving issues related to questionable customer service.

EDIT: It wasn't Yamaducci that got shoved to the ground as he left the shop, but Chuey.  I corrected this in my post.

I don't know yamaducci or Chuey and haven't been on Samba forum but a few times ages ago I know that people bash AJ and jump on the band wagon bad mouthing him on many occasions. I don't know what incident you are speaking of, it may be valid and it may be heresay.  Nothing personal meant at you in my statements and I'm sure you realize that. There may be a bunch of bad stuff written true but there's also a boat load of good he's done. Anyhow I don't want to get in an AJ argument at all.  The quiet pack setups he had and may still have were pretty darn nice.  Let's not take this any further off topic.

I put a Scat 1 1/2 merge header and dual muffs (ceramic coated from Scat) last year on my 1776. It was very well made and sounded great but stuck out a little to much for my liking. I just figured I would share my pics in case  someone wanted to know how the Scat one looked like on a car.

Luv the dual QP's, wish i could run them.  On the subject of QP's, Gene Berg has been credited with the creation
of the QP muffler for the Cal Look VW.

IIRC Gene sourced the first QP mufflers from a ....Jeep !!

But then, I have been known to be wrong on occasion  ;D

hi, i`m looking for a 1 3/8 inch header to fit my bugpack dual quietpack mufflers, some of the headers i`ve seen are off centre and look like crap ! does anybody know a supplier of small flange headers in this size that will exit the car correctly ?
the berg dual qpacks look very nice , but when i looked on their website they have no exhaust systems listed

Best bet is to just get a brand new Bugpack header... then there will be no guesswork involved. ;-)

You might e-mail the guys at Bugpack to be sure, but in my experience they were.  I don't recall having a Bugpack exhaust with the collector off-center.  It's usually best to try match brands where exhausts are concerned, at least that's been my experience.

One of those Ghias in the posted pics has one jacked-up looking set up mufflers on it.  The tips are practically skyward... ::)

The best fitment of a dual QP muffler that I've seen probably in the last 10 years was on this mild custom ~'69 Beetle displayed at the Harwinton Bug-In event in Connecticut in June 2013. Owner told me it was just a "regular Bugpack". Was most likely a 1 3/8" header. Note how far forward they sit and conform to the curvature of the fenders, so that most of the muffler bodies are covered by the rear apron. Apron appearance is very clean by having the now unused two original exhaust cutouts filled in. Also, how close/tucked up to the body they are located instead of hanging farther down as is usually seen. Engine had Kadron dual carbs.
