Title: 48 IDA Repair...?
Post by: Stoo the worm Simpson on March 28, 2011, 12:06:58 pm
Does anyone know if it is possible to tig weld an IDA, as one of mine has a worn hole where the accelerator pump lever sits in the main body of the carb....
I need to fill this hole up before i can re-drill the hole again,
Or is there any other way this can be achieved...like a pressed in bush etc.

I have circled the part in this rather bad pic...sorry i have know idea why it has come out like this.

Thanks in advance.

Stu, I can't see the pictures at work, but if you have a read through this: http://ultimateaircooled.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php/topic,1795.630.html you'll find some useful info! Page 43 onwards if it goes to the start of the thread!

Maybe you do not have to weld it up. I would try to drill it bigger and put a bush in (maybe with glue or press fit). Then put the shaft in.
My idea...

You can't TIG it, too much zink in the casting. Your carb will melt away. I would try the Timesert M3 method or the Helicoil ( ???).

I've TIG welded Webers before. It welds just like any other ally casting I've welded.

One non-welding cure is to drill the hole larger, and thread it.  Then get a new steel post custom made with that same thread on it. Loctite and screw it in.
