Title: License plate surrounds?
Post by: Jon on April 25, 2007, 12:01:37 pm
I know it's hot now, but how about THEN? Would you have it on a decromed 1979 built car? In my opinion no...

I keep a fluctuating stock of 60s vw dealer frames, and they are cool IMHO, but on a car like that, no. Maybe some dodgy black plastic version with VW trends or something on it would suit it better.

An old, scruffed frame is always a cool add-on to any old and cool car.

An old California plate with no frame would be my choice, just too bad we can't run those

I Have A Restored and Rechromed HARRY HILL VW  West Covina Calif. It is Dated on the Back 1954 Perfect Condition, I was looking at some Frames on Samba For Sale  some people want a lot of $$ for the Frames and there not that old?? I dont know what mine would be worth I have had  two Guys ask Me for Years if I Wanted to get Rid of It  But I Just Keep Hanging on to it  I guess the Main Reason Is I Bought Two Cars From Them in the 80's of course the Newer Frames are way Different then the old one... any Ideas on what it would be Worth??

I dont think I have ever had an early california sized frame - I understand the height was reduced in 55 ish?

That frame sounds awesome, re-chromed and restored it must be worth a couple of hundred dollars I would have thought. The prices seem to be on the increase, you dont see many for under $50 on the web these days, and those are normal sized dealer frames in average condition.

Do you have any pics of yours?

Si.

I don`t know the right answer to your question Brother....but plate frames are kewl....I tend to dislike the replica Empi-stuff and thats why they lower the standards on those original Empi-frames too....
So for me I really like those "right" dealer-frames...but the best ones are the "sayings"....like Zachs "yellow snow", and several others....

...hey I also like quake-lettering.....

Looks like this got a little out of control..
JHU: Like I said on the phone earlier, I think your car would be best off without a frame (who needs bling and extra weight?)
On a car as clean as yours will be it would look a little out of place in my opinion.
I would go for a blue/yellow California plate without frame for that periode correct look. Blackplates are cool, but blue is more '79....

Getting back to JHU's question. One of the things we used to do would be to take the "dealer" frames, have them rechromed and then paint the relief areas to match the body. Looks good on certain colors usually ones that contrast well with the chrome.

I'm sorry (now) that I used to use only a black frame back then. When I had my squareback, I got from Volkswagen West. It had both front and rear frames.......no big deal (then!). MY, how we have changed.

Rick, Henry and I ran those plate frames in DKK. The current dealer is still Ala Moana but not the same vintge plate frame. When all the V-Dubs were gone I did pck up an 80's Ala moana Porsche Audi frame for my 928 S-4. Car is long gone but the frame is now on the wiffy's SUV and still pristine after 12+? years. My original Ala Moana VW frame was stolen along with my 67 Black Ragtop Ghia. My third and last DKK car. Glenn

Years ago, I had a job at James Brown Motoring Accessories.  We sold loads of license frames..."Save a Tree Eat a Beaver" "Every Fireman Loves a Quickie" "Polish Mercedes" and so on, but the "Gas Grass or Ass" frame outsold 'em all!  I never had one on any of my cars though it was on the back of the sandrail trailer for twenty years  ::) ;)  The pic is me in my "youth" with my friend Grub's Ghia (sorry, I may have posted this before) with the GGA frame displayed proudly out back.

Here is my frame for the collection. Meltebeke Volkswagen was my local dealer way back when. And perhaps the only VW dealer in southern California that Sarge didn't work for.... Frenchy gave me this one, but I found the front frame at Drag Day for $20, and since found a new home on my truck (a non VW I might add). I often get thumbs up when people see the plate and frame.

And Keith, about the Haneline frame.... you know it had to happen sooner or later.

that's the one that I want.  My step dad threw mine out in the 90's 2 of them) it was displayed with my first cars license plate.  The frame had a porsche emblem along with the vw emblem.  My parents bought all their cars there through the 70's.

My folks bought a new red '65 beetle from Meltebeke.  I remember my dad driving my two sisters, mom and I up to San Francisco on vacation that year...the last "family" vacation was a cramped one >:( :P ::)

I found a University VW surround from Indiana Pennsylvania on a 59 I bought. It was neat at the time. Advancements in 3D printing I’ve seen from a former co-worker could basically have you creating/duplicating any type frame surrounds you could imagine, so they’ve kind of lost their uniqueness to me.

I've had the frame for years, it was a gift when I was about 9 or 10 from one of my parents' college friends who spent many hours riding around in the little red '67 that is now mine. Funny story, I actually own two of these frames, the one that's on the car is the one I got as a kid, the second one I bought at a swap meet here in Denver a few years back to put on the car so that the older one wouldn't get messed up or stolen. When I went to put it on, the plate wouldn't fit in the frame for some reason, no matter what I tried to do. I dug around and found the first frame in one of the closets at my mom's house, gave it a little polish out in the garage, and had none of the fitment troubles I had with the second one. It's been on the car for a few years now, but it always makes me smile a bit to see it.
