Title: 30hp Tunning - Hints/Tips/Advise/links Please :)
Post by: Lee.C on July 27, 2011, 23:02:28 pm
Well as always guys - As the title says  :)

For reasons I can't really go into I have to swap the engine on the 51 Split soon, I have a VERY nice totally original 30hp motor from a later oval (54/55 I think :-\) it has not been run in over 20yrs! despite this I am faithfully assured it is in VERY good shape - It even still has its original VW logo'd fan belt  :)

The thing is although I LOVE my vintage speed stuff like empi, racetrim, dds etc - I know almost NOTHING about 30hp tunning  :-\

I am thinking..........

- A small raise in compression,
- maybe some porting/polishing,
- Dual carbs,
- Fram/356 style oil filter

So what would you do if you were in my position - Your thoughts please guys  :)

Depends on how deep you wanna get... there is a Vintage Performance section on the samba forums worth checking out.

BBT will soon release its own Pepco supercharger (Roots style) replica kit, bolt on to 30HP, mucho better construction than Judson vane compresor. That should do the trick ;D

sell this stuff to the vintage and originalo guys. to make hp out of the 30ps engine will coast way much more than typ1.
a repro pepcp will be very interesting. lets see how much it will be. mix it with repro okrasas and you will have 70 hp and i bet 3000 dollar minimum in heads and supercharger.

i will sell my supercharger (little screemer kit) it in the winter in fact of putting my bigger heads and my bigger supercharger kit on my daily driver. it make all day long 70 hp at 3900 rpm and 150nm( from about 1700-3000 rpm) on stock 36 heads with just more modern exhaust valves in it for sure its a 1192cc stock engine drove 11000km with it. boost all the time ;)

I´ve been looking down that lane for almost a decade (30 hp tuning) But just never found the time to develop it. Now we have repro Okrasa heads on the market at affordable prices. repro carbs too. I do not know the quality of these though. But the heads have a lot of potential. With a little carefull thinking they will support 90-100 hp easily. I or someone else just need to get around to it. - in fact Joe Ruiz may already "be there"

I can't believe no one has tooled up for big bore kits. A 80mm should fit easy, even an 83mm is well within reason. With the popularity of these motors now, I think they would sell well.

Lee, get in touch with Ray Schubert in Mountain View CA he is your best source for information and hot rod parts for 36hp/Denzel/2pc case 356 stuff. Ratio rockers, cams, blowers, ti valves, special springs, manifolds to mount Weber 2bbl carbs on Okrasa heads, or 40PII's

Being a firm believer that the power is in the heads, I had Jeff Denham (UD) sort me a pair of heads for my 'hot' 30hp, although I don't think he will appreciate me advertising that fact on here as he said they took more work than a set of full blown race heads  :o

x2 the bigger a port the more easy you can work on it. the 90° small bow on theintake is such hard to port.

i can't tell but wait till sep. after speedweek. ther you will see the potentioal of full race okrasas.
and also it is all double the work than on typ1 engines.
if somebody is interested i can offer a set of 83mm pistons and liners for 30hp.

I read that 48's are legal now :)

83's give you 1385cc. With a 74 crank you get 1602cc.

and one engine will be running 48's ;) this speedweek but for the most those carbs are way to big and also on this einiges they are just the balls of that bull.
the kit i would offer is best as a 1385cc with stock wide of the engine. an cc and compression ratio plus or with good heads stock okrasas or portet ones single or okrasas depends on the builder. the cylinders i will machine down to the wishes of the costomer. the pistons are kolbenschmidt new originals from the 80's.
if someone will offer some big money i could build a 1700cc that will make some serious power. it's all in the vitrine and boxes ;)
