Title: -59 sleeper project
Post by: Sepi on September 30, 2011, 17:43:45 pm
Yes, after all I'm here to show my second VW. After driving 26 good years a vintage 1952 original everything beetle it was time to get something else. I found a good candidate from 1959 some months ago. Previous owner had a plan to build a resto-looker and he did the chassis and bottom ready. Although too low suspension with original brakes, engine, gearbox etc wasn't my plan and I'm going to improve it quite totally.

My aim is to build a perfect sleeper without any signs of speed and power resources, so that one day I could drive it to our local vintage car get together and only the deep stroker sound from CSP python could wake up some ears.

My recipe for a torque engine is simple like this:

- polished Bugpack 84mm crank +8 dowel flywheel and Scat big bolt +Tommis billet pulley and Keimo's bolt + 5,5 Bugpack H-profile rods, new ARP bolts. Porsche journals
- VW block machined and reinforced, ff, 94mm Cima cylinders
- GB pushrods
- Scat pushrod tubes
- Schadek 30mm oil pump
- KS crank bearings
- micro sump
- DRD CNC L7 heads 42x37.5 for 94 mm
- MSD Billet T-1, MSD 6AL, MSD Blaster 2
- Dellorto 45 DRLA's
etc.... to remember something now.

New Rancho Pro-Street gearbox and CSP dual circuit disc front and rear brakes, Koni shocks, many kind of supports and stabilizers for suspension and chassis to help 5,5" smoothie rims with hubcaps and quality tires (maybe 175 / 195x15) to handle the much improved power and probably speed as well.

The best thing for now is to get a new garage ready within some weeks and being as close as possible to our house :-)

Here are some picks and feel free to advice me as I'm still rookie among these lookers. The engine is BTW going to be built by a pro - a friend of mine

This recommendation will fit perfectly to my plans to get a real GT power:

Hello,

I would recommend  JPM00806(263deg at 0.05” , 9.64mm cam lift and 106LC) very strong low and midrange with decent top end.

I also recommend 7075 billet dual taper PR, makes the engine less noicy and nicer to the valvetrain.

Parts are in stock.

Thanks

Johannes

Some work has been done for the chassis

It's looking so innocent - Later same style 5,5 rims and quality tyres will give better handling on the road - I hope so...

As I'm not willing to make a roll cage to strengthen the chassis and body, what do you think if I install kabrio supports? Any experience?

When the engine is ready, I'll add those bars for the rear support - just having some image for now

My next job is the body with so many rotten corners, although generally its quite straight...

Having just gone this route with high horse power and small tires -- the wheel hop is going to be substantial and can end up hurting a lot of parts including your trans --- you are going to need at least a 6 point cage that ties into your trans horns and stops all the flex right where it starts --- I just bought a RLR bolt in roll bar system to fix this problem

Those rims and tyres are just temporally fitted to move the chassis. I'm going to use these 5,5 " rims (http://api.vwheritage.com/_img/med/149834_01_med.jpg) and better tyres. The idea is to hide the great potential of my beetle to give a nice surprise for these beemers  ;)

The good and strong cage might be a must. It is just now too visible sign of tuned vehicle and I'm willing to try without it first - although there is a set of Recaros...

Great concept.  Nice job on the pan, looks like this car will handle great.  The kafer bar will stop most of the wheelhop I'm sure.  This car doesn't look to be a hardcore drag racer anyways.

Interesting concept on the Kabrio supports.  Are you saying you will install the heater channel supports, the front footwell pieces and also the rear seat bottom pieces?  I haven't seen that done before and it's a great idea for a stealthy and tighter car.   ;D

I got one set last year from VW Heritage http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_NCA-Wheel-Solid-5-5x15-5-205_act_shop.product_pID_149834_lang_EN_country_GB.htm
It seems to be out of stock at a moment. These rims are actually with clips, so even hubcaps are possible to use. And these are also with a groove for tubeless tyres. With an original theme of paint these will match to my plans. I cannot say how those will go to front axle as it is not narrowed and CSP brakes add about half inch per side

These heater channel supports (http://www.vwkaeferersatzteile.de/Body-Shell/Convertible-Holm/Heating-channel-reinforement-beams-1200-1300-1500::534.html) are easy to get but haven't seen the others for sale. Maybe the rear seat support could be easy to fabricate by myself, but the meaning is not so important with a hardtop. And for sure, I don't have experience if there is really any meaning with these  :-\

Extra piston cooling is very interesting - are you running high compression on this engine to take advantage of the added cooling?

CR is 11,05 - quite high but we have 98 oct. petrol. I wanted an engine with plenty of everyday torque

Its time to continue and the first modification is a rack&pinion steering. Unfortunately my beetle is with a king link beam, so the German system wasn't just a bolt-on. The left side shock is too close and the R&P system must locate about two inches towards right. I'll get some parts soon to finish this, but testing shows even now, that tie rods length will have about the same two inch difference. First I had a plan to extend the joint in the middle to get equal length rods, but maybe there would not be any meaning of such a minimal difference comparing original tie rods...? I'm going to use a 1203/1303 double joint for the steering column to get it align. Please advice me if I'm going to make something stupid or dangerous :-)

Picture about testing R&P steering...

Bodywork is going slowly by slowly. I decided not to be in a hurry and even I'm not going to have a target like the show stopper, It's nice to know that everything is tried to make well - or maybe I have to say as well as possible. I'm learning by doing  ;D

Body has gone to be sand blasted and probably tomorrow its on the way to painter. I'm preparing wings, doors and lids to be painted as well with the original fjord blue colour.

Quite sure, this summer will be my last with an original split -52 and then it will be for sale. No kicks with it anymore after 28 slow motoring 25 hp years...

nicework, which car is the rack steering from?

The R&P steering is from VW Polo. That system to fit it to beetle is a copy with slight modifications from a German set. Originally it was designed for ball joint beam, so I had to change the position of steering rack about two inches to the right. Left tie rod is a shortened VW beetle RH side rod and the right tie rod is from VW Polo.
I added the original steering absorber to make sure there is no daabadaaba when I go to annual inspection. Rules here demand a steering absorber when engine is bigger than original 1,2 -59 model...

thanks for the reply. it looks a really good setup.
wasn't possible to lenghten the connection piece between rack and tie rods, more to the center, to have them equal lenght?
i believe that it is always better that the original setup but equal lenght would be perfect, like 1302/1303.

The left shock with this king pin front beam is the reason for the off center rack. I got some good advice to reduce bump steer but it wasn't possible to avoid it completely. From suspension travel bottom to top it is still some millimeters - measured from tyre to tyre. As I'm not going to use low profile tyres and not driving rally or off road there should not be much meaning. I wanted to get more accurate and better feeling or connection for the steering

BTW - There must be something basically mad with this hobby of beetle body repair. Like front wings now. I could get a set of those with some hundreds of euros and maybe after some final touch those would be fine looking. But for some reason I have a set of old wings with rust and dents. Maybe not even OEM quality, just dismantled from this -59 and an other oval era beetle. I have done now about ten hours work to repair and straighten those and still some sand blasting and finish will be needed before sending to paint pro. The only reason must be to see the limit of skills and nerves - and lungs for dust...

After so many long days waiting the paintshop finishing their previous works, my beetle is now under professional care. Basically sand blasting didn't give any big cases and now the body is getting nice original fjord blue colour. Few places are ready and it is so nice to see those gloss results. If everything goes well, I'll get the body + all shiny pieces of beetle before Christmas. You'll get me then from my garage :-)

I have done some electrics and steering is ready. Some modifications should be done behind as air filters are quite a challange to hide under hood. There seems to be sand systems (http://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=3388) from CB & separed cone filters and low profile filters (http://www.itgairfilters.com/Megaflow-Product-Range.asp) and also I know a talented alloy smith who can do what ever is needed.

Thomas  (http://www.tacho-thomas.de/)can do many things! I wanted to get a fuel meter, but then updated the speedo as well. Unfortunately normal life goes on the very beginning of the scale

Test fitted front wings and it seems that I can use 5,5" rim with some nice modern tyre. The profile depends how low is good to go - maybe 175/65 or 185/60? Rear tyres will be 195/65-15.

Handling should be my priority but with a classic rake - so feel free to recommend good tyres and warn bad ones.

That wheel is very flush with the fender, a 175/65 will fit the 5.5" wheel very well, but it will slightly bulge out of the fender, and you will have some fender contact if you have call look rake. You will need either more backspace or a narrowed beam...

Love this car - any updates?

aussie - The cooler is 210x194mm from Setrab. Fan is 8". Brackets I did myself - as you may have seen...

There is something going on almost every day but not so visible. Slowly by slowly

Interesting connections under the left rear wing...

Just wondering, is the oil coming out on the right or on the left from that Mocal adapter with a thermostat to cooler. It should go first to the cooler and then pass the e-switch of the fan. Still easy to chance if somebody tell me how those outlets and inlets should be

Most of electrics are ready, but MSD + other fuel systems will be known when engine is ready to start. We had to shorten about one inch those bigbeef manifolds to get the engine lid closed and it is still very close with CB air filters.

Today I met the long time waited upholstery pro and the interior with new seat cloth will be done during May, but still better to think that this beauty hardly runs before August this year - or next...

185/65x15 front and 195/65x15 Firestones ordered. This was a test tyre and it fits so nicely, tho that look is a bit rally

Boss, the glovebox is original but I wanted to paint it to get away many stains. Now it looks a bit plastic but it will be hidden behind the cover.

New tyres will arrive on tuesday but first rides are still far away. Now I found some issues with as starter...

Interior and glasses, that's it! Not far from the registration and back to roads, but it might still take some time as the headliner was wrong colour. Even the box from WW was marked as light grey, but there was a nice set of beige linings.
I'm testing moldings and those original ones are a bit too wide - but maybe my eyes get to seeing that.

It was the first time outside and how innocent it looks! Just like I wanted - grandpa is propably going to buy some milk with his old beetle...

But as you can see, there is something wrong with the colour of the door  :( This might mean new paint and why this happened for an experienced (and expensive!) paintshop pro, I can just wonder. This is a risk if you paint all parts of the body separately. Anyway this is going back to painter for polishing and the we will have a discussion

Now doors are right and most flaws of paint have been polished. It's hard to make 100% with old parts collected from here and there, like those front wings. Left and right horn grill holes aren't exactly the same position and it causes the front bumper to look like not straight  :-[ But this beetle is built to go, not not for show, so nitpickers have to look another project

Anyway, interior is ordered six weeks ago from TMI, but I'm still waiting. As I'm waiting some moldings and stuff from local VW part dealer - who responces once a month and do not reply if he has any or anything ready to be posted to me. Nerves nerves... and no timetable for anything seems to be the most important lesson to learn with this project...

Hello

Very cool car (-:

I have some questions?
Your front brakes - Is that zero offset CSP brakes or
Your spindles is that stock spindles or lowered spindles?
Stock beam - narrow beam - Lowered beam?

Best regards Henrik Hagen

Title: Re: -59 sleeper project

Henrik, those are original spindles and normal CSP front brakes. It is quite out with those 5,5" rims, but ok to my taste.

OK thanks for your answer.

I forgot to write that front beam is original width and adjustable and now more or less half way up and down. I cannot make it much lower as those tyres will start to give problems

And NOW it seems that the long waited interior roof cloth lining is arrived to Finland and I'll get it done soon :-) After that we will start and tune the engine, make some final touch and then everything should be ready to MOT & registration. Let's hope the inspector would be positively surprised and I'll get the bug back to roads after 18 years.

Last days of my holiday spent to make some of those about million small things; interior, seat belts, etc. One wind screen was here but unfortunately it was for 65>. BTW, counting all those days to wait for a part or work to be done by pros' must be now almost a year and I have tried to plan what to do next and when. Amazing! But when the correct wind screen is here and on the place it should be, there are not many things to do now anymore. After registration and test drives I'm sure the gearbox will be done during next winter to stay dry and clean. Have anybody else such leaking issues with a brand new Rancho pro street boxes?

Tom ^ I bought this simple fan from Biltema (http://www.biltema.se/sv/Bat/VVS/Ventilation/Motorrumsflakt-25832/) Then I painted it and added the meshwire to intake. With a two position switch and a resistor I got it working like a modern gadget. That hose is from old Hoover

do you have a brand name for that R&P steering unit? love the sleeper setup!

edit:

Found it ;)
The R&P steering is from VW Polo.

For the sleeper style, engine lid couldn't be ajar in any corner and with these air cleaners the engine breathing works - so this much must be sacrifice. It looks a bit weird, but it works and removing couple of millimetres from lip the stack, it cannot effect much for the air flow - I hope so...

I highly recommend using a starter for a automatic bug -- -- You'll find the IMI spin at a slower speed than stock (reduction gearing) which can also be a problem at times -- I've never had an issue since switching over years ago, spins my 2989 without any issues

Skoda Felicia (http://www.startermotor-alternator-store.co.uk/skoda-felicia-19d-96-99-starter-motor-t219-6726-p.asp) starter is also recommend and as a spare it is easilily availlable here. We'll see. If this still have issues, I'll look something else than IMI

First kilometres driven and not bad at all. Still some fine tuning, but basic things were quite right. Steering was also better than expected, but I couldn't do any real test. So within a week or two I'm driving this beauty to inspection office to get licence plates and a proper insurance. I hope he will give me those important documents to enjoy these last warm days with my beetle.

This -59 beetle is completely assembled and tuned again here in Mikkeli, so I can proudly call this as The Mikkeli Edition

Still lot of small things to do but normal driving and testing is now possible and much easier. These modern europlates are for time beeing only as those wanted ones are here in Finland 900,-€ and I'll order those later.

Today got the correct lisence plate for this -59. It's now long winter to wait until next time on the road

Spring should be here, but only three or four days warm enough to ride this 59. Still tuning carbs and doing some other small things to get more confidence to travel longer trips
