Title: DKP ROAD TRIP TO FEATHERLY PARK
Post by: johnl on October 31, 2011, 01:25:32 am
The next installment of my photos will be of our Sunday, February 1972 trip to Featherly Park in Anaheim.  I can't remember how this outing came to be but many of the photos you see of DKP cars in Keith Seume's books were shot on this day and at this location.  At the time the park was almost new and you will see that via the small trees.  Today I'd suspect they are huge, but I don't recall ever going back after this trip.

Greg Aronson shot most of the photos that are published in Keith's books with a Hasselblad Camera that as I recall he borrowed possibly from his brother Jeff.  The photos you are viewing here were either shot by Christie or myself.  This time I'll only do one photo per caption except for the first travel shots.

The first three will be on the 91 freeway driving east.  Christie stood up at speed through Butternut's sunroofand got these.  It was a typical February hazy day and I'd say this was about 11 am.  The car directly behind us in Mark and Cindy Thurber, car # 5 I believe to be Rick Winter and #6 is Greg Aronson.  Beyond this I just can't see or remember so help would be appreciated.  The second shot is more clear and you can see the train crossing very close to Tustin Ave.  In the final shot of these you can clearly see the sign with street names and also a Ford pickup that was more than likely almost new at the time.

In this shot we'd circled the wagons it looks like.  In the fore ground nose to nose is Rick Winter's red '64 and Butternut on the right.  I can make out Aronson's white car in the background and next to it is the "Toilet" driven by Stan Davis.

Butternut shown similar to photos that have been published.  It is sitting in the same position, but different camera angles were taken.  Mike Mahaffey's green split in the background and notice how small the trees are.

A front shot of Butternut with Rick Winter's red car to the left, Mike Mahaffey's green split at the rear of my car and to the right the black car I believe to be Rick Zavala's.  Possibly on the far right is Bill McMillan's zenith blue car.

Now those are some SUPER FINE photos there John!

Truly awesome you still have these around and we have the technology for All to see.

The rear of Butternut with the deck lid open showing the 1700cc engine which would be replaced later that year with the 1900cc 48IDA motor.  That may be Sarge's car to the left and once again I'm thinking Bill McMillan's to the right.  Note the Pepsi can on the ground to the left of my car.  I was able to blow it up and see the vintage logo..

This looks to be McMillan, Butternut, Winter and possibly Sarge's car on the far right.  I have no idea who the guy taken the photos is, but he is in some other of our shots.

Sitting on the left side of the bench is Mike Lar Lar Larsen.  The three to his right I can't identify.  Bill McMillan is standing to the far right.  Steve Liekus standing in front of Stan Davis' "Toilet" with Aronson's car to the right.

The Ford van in the background may also be Aronson's and I have no idea who the 356 belongs to.

Title: Re: DKP ROAD TRIP TO FEATHERLY PARK
Post by: johnl on October 31, 2011, 02:14:10 am
Arnie Mohlman standing holding the ball, Stan Davis standing on table, Bill McMillan sitting on table and the girl is unknown.  Ron Fleming's car at far left and Rick Winter at right.  Note the 91 freeway in the background elevated with a truck passing by.

Unknown Clemtine car (orange), Mark Thurber and I think Kip Ralston with the dark blue car.  Possibly Lisa Fleming with her back to the camera by the black car.

Possibly Kip Ralson's dark blue car.

The dark blue car once again.  I think that is Kip pointing to it on the left.

Mike Lar-Lar Larsen's gold car in fore ground.  Possibly Jim Brook's car on the left.

The infamous "Toilet" piloted by Stan (Captain Peanut Butter).  There was a story that Stan laid under the "Toilet" for a long period of time at the F&A shop adjusting the clutch.  The only problem was the motor was out of the vehicle.  Details, details, details.   ::) ::) ::) ::)

For the time that will finish this section of my post.  For those club members who's cars are not shown I'm sorry, but almost 40 years ago who would have thought anyone but us would have cared.  I hope all who view these will appreciate the times we lived and what we did with our cars.

Great friends and memories are all I have of these times.  I'd love to go back and live it again, but that is not possible.  Thanks to the current DKP guys and all of the other clubs they've made me feel welcome and I thank them all for that.

More photos and subject to cover in the future, so with that said please POST AWAY to the thread.   :) :) :) :)

Incredible photos, John. Thanks for taking the time to share them. By the way, the Porsche in the background appears to be a Convertible D to my eye, didn't one of the guys from FAT have one?

Hi Zach,  Glad you are enjoying the photos and who else could I share them with but this crowd.   ;) ;) ;)  Greg Aronson did build a 356 with a big 411 motor and air conditioning, but that was years later.  He always had the ability to create really nice rides.

I doubt there is really enough material for a "book".  Beyond that who would buy it except for a few?  In a way I guess I'm writing the book now and sharing it with all, so if you want a "hard copy" print the stories and photos  out and you will have your own DKP book.   ;D ;D

Great pics, thanks for sharing John.  The cars of course are very cool.  But another aspect I like is the people.  Seeing longer hair, lots of facial hair, and bell bottoms really gives the feel to the pictures of the time period.

Love that picture with Lightnin' Bolt.

Once again.... NICE PICTURES!!!  I have my own pictures that I've shared here from that event.  It's really cool to see some different shots.  Wild & crazy days indeed!  Zach hit it on the head with Greg Aronson's Porsche... the first was  a white (Fabs pic) "real" Porsche, the second was a glass kit car with the large Type IV motor.  It was light blue with a camel colored top.... bitchin' car that hauled ass!

Now I'm getting curious as to what the park looks like today.  Maybe this weekend I'll take the VW and drive out there and shoot some photos.  It might be cool if I could park in the same place and try to duplicate some of the shots some 39 years later.  If that happens I'll share the photos.

Come to America and you can see all of these places with your own two eyes and you might even meet a couple of us.   ;) ;) ;) ;)

Sarge says you can stay with him for as long as you want and he has left over Peanut Butter from the Stan Davis days so you won't go hungry....    :o :o :o :o    ;D ;D ;D ;D

Heres a Featherly park pic from 2009, Can't see the 91 anymore, feels secluded, still a cool place to hang out.

Thanks for the pics John, I grew up in Riverside and always looked up to you Cats in Orange County

Thanks for the photo.  The place sure looks like it has changed with the full trees that were young saplings when we were there.  I still think I'll go just to see it for myself and want to try and find the exact location all of my photos were taken.

Riverside was a cool place too as I seem to remember a company called EMPI that came from there.  Butternut was purchased at Econo Motors, so that is kind of a link.  Regarding the OC it was the best and although it has changed considerably still a great place to be.

Yes that's Greg's" real Porsche" 59 cabriolet with a "real motor" ;D a VW type1, 78x88, 40x35.5, w110engle, at first w48webers, later w42webers, for +fuel economy-less sound-more comfort etc.  This VW-Porsche hybrid was factually the (first VW engine) with dual mufflers, the intention was to make it quiet and still use the exhaust outlets through the bumper overiders on the Porsche.  A" funny thing "happened when we dynoed the motor,,,  ???  it made to much horsepower!!! I was building my 84x90.5, 42x37.5 w125engle 1.5/8merged motor at the same time so,,, if Gregs 1900cc made approx. 14hp more then it should, then mine should make more then we thought it should,,,and it did!!! ;D a freaking 19hp more!!! and the dual muffler trend was born  :) .      John and Fabs ,  thanks for the pics,  Great thread John.           KG

Hey John, that's a good shot of Thurber's dash, I have been trying to obtain some and still think I can, but family issues with the people are making it tough.   There is something that appears to be hanging under the passenger side of Thurber's dash,,, its an 8track tape, he had his player mounted at an angle , in a hidden fashion, well it would have been hidden if he( DIDNT LEAVE A TAPE IN)!!!!!    ;D ;D ;D        KG

Keith, I'm happy I was able to assist you with the photo.  In looking at the shot today I personally don't care for it because of a couple of reasons.  (1) There is no glove box.  (2) The mounting screws are clearly visible and it looks like a complete add on.  Remembering Aronson's plexy dash I recall he used pop rivets to attach and I think he had a glove box door.

When I did mine which was done in three separate panels I attached studs to the back side of each panel, drilled the holes in the original dash with a bit of clearance room for alignment purposes and then had Brad cover then with the same to materials that were used throughout the car's interior.  The main area was a material that looked like felt and then bordered with a small maybe 1/4" edge done in the brown vinyl.  The radio-8 track player along with the control for the front air shocks was mounted in the glove box, but I still had a bit of room for other things.  I removed the ignition switch and only had a "start" button in the center where the ash tray once was.  Because the car ran on a Joe Hunt magnito with the 78.4x88 motor I had a hidden kill switch under the dash very close to the steering column.

I feel I achieved my goal in making it not look so "bolt on" and I still think all of these years later it was a cleaner look.  I'm sure some would not agree and that is okay by me as each has to do what works for them.  Unfortunately for me and I guess everyone else I only have a couple of photos of all this in my recently discovered slides.

Ditch the chrome on the roll bar for either body color or silver... and that car would be perfection. It's been years since I've seen someone use a header with the stock exhaust outlets on one of those. SO COOL!!!!!!!!!

If I remember correctly Greg sold the car to a great guy named Jim Lojudice (hope I spelled his last name right) I bought my B&Cmodel Porsche breaks for my choptop from him dirt cheap  ;D ,( thanks Jim).  To each his own on the rollbar, the only thing I would change about that car is the owner,,,TO ME!! Greg later built a Targa with the stainless roof piece painted the same as the car and some people didn't like it, mostly Porsche purists, but I thought it looked awesome!  That's the reason we build cars isn't it? to reflect our own tastes & personality... ;) ;) ;)          KG       AS USUAL OUR BUDDY FABS HAS THE PICS... ;D  Thanks Fabs.

Keith, Jim Logudice (sp?) is registered on here and posts once in a while! He had a red '67 with blacked out trim IIRC.

I really think it would be way cool if John & Sarge and maybe some others went to Featherly Park and took pics for old and new times sake, anyone agree? Or am I just a big trouble maker?  ;D ;D          KG

Keith after scanning you post for trouble, the conclusion of the status came out as negative. Zero trouble content was detected. In other words, I agree with your concept, full throttle.

Round it up, John... get a few of the D.K.P. 1 people together and capture the moment(s). Like Keith posted, it would by cool.

My plan was to maybe make a trip out there later today with my '63.  Problem is as I write this at 8:22am it is raining.  If it clears in a bit I still may take the ride.  My boss usually lets me leave work early on Friday afternoons.     ;) ;) ;) ;)

I think it would be neat if something like this could be done, but the problem is only a few of the original guys (DKP 1) currently have cars.  Sarge, Gregg Bunch (who was not around when the original event took place) and myself.  Of course ANY of the original guys would be more than welcomed to attend in my view.  So after I scout it out and find that the original area would still be accessible to us I'll discuss it with the current DKP guys and see if they would like to participate.

How about some of you current guys chiming in on this with your thoughts.   :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

I could have sworn there was a pic taken from the underside of the car's rear, with the caption noting that FAT came out with the first dual QP set up... of course, it could very well be the photo I'm thinking of is not of this particular car, but I seem to recall seeing a similar exit point for the tail pipes.

The more the merrier is the way I see it.  I didn't make it out there today on my scouting trip, but plan to do so tomorrow possibly after Bugs 4 Breakfast.  Hopefully by Sunday afternoon at Nick's (weather permitting) I'll address the group.

Oops there I go again making trouble (thinking)  :D , just hope something fun, good and memorable comes to be....               KG

Keith,

I like your "trouble maker" ideas.  Well have to see how this plays out as getting many of the DKP 1 guys together might be a challenge.  I remember what Ron, Gregg Bunch, myself and others did to pull off the two reunions.  None the less I think it would be a worth while gathering.  Who knows, possibly in another 40 years there will be some young guys looking at what we did.

Keith,  Interesting story about the two pinstripes done by Shaky (Chuck Babbit) Jake as he did the same for me probably some years earlier on the Butternut car.  The work was actually done inside the Costa Mesa Auto Haus store as we took the front doors off and the car just made it through.

Customers were walking around it while the master did his work.  I wanted two "ghost" stripes just a shade off of the body color and it came out PERFECT.

On another note, after Bugs 4 Breakfast today I drove out and found Featherly Park.  Got lost a couple of times as I had no navigation in the VW, but I did find it.  Entered on the east end which I don't remember being there.  A car show was in progress and and it would have cost me 10 bucks to get in, so I passed but hope to return during the week when activity is lower and can do some driving around to see if the original photo site can still be used.

A really nice detail to the pinstripes on Jim's car was the tips at the front & rear, they crossed top to bottom, one rotation, ending together in one sharp tip, and the stripes were two different colors & one thicker then the other, and like yours, you had to" look" to see all of this. Great Work!!    KG

Pinstriping was huge in the seventies. We had one of our family cars done by Rim Brandt. I always dug on the ghost stuff so where you had to really look in order to see it. What you two are talking about fits the bill.

Less is more.

Here's a pic of Jim Logudice's 67, This was my inspiration car Dec 1975....
The Pin striping was BadAss! very subtle.

After buying and selling about 25 VWs, in 1977 I finally found my Java green 67 in 1977!

Lowered and Dechromed it, NOS 5 spokes (bought at the Empi garage sale), 145/165 XZX's, then installed a 1835cc, Berg C/W crank, 110, Zenith and fourtuned exhaust.

Sorry to jack your thread John, Thanks for letting me reminisce a little....

Hi John.

i would like to know more about this bus, that i love.

one of the best i've ever seen.

two or three details, but the right ones.

could you please post more pics if you have or stories if you remember?

As I remember the bus (Toilet) was first an F & A shop vehicle and somewhere along the way Stan Davis acquired it.  Beyond that I don't remember much about it other than the clutch adjustment story I've previously mentioned.  I'm still working on more photos and stories and have some ready to post currently, but I'm holding back a bit not to overload all of you with this ancient history.

One thing I can share is that last Sunday at Nick's I posed the question of doing a recreation of the 1972 road trip to Featherly Park.  Of the current DKP members that were present all seemed to say yes and I think it could happen sometime early in 2012.  I still need to go out and do some scouting for the original location.

I remember the "Toilet" very well. Sarge's single port motor ended up in it, less the Zenith. I bought that motor from Stan, with a Holley on it. Ran it for a year, racing

against my fellow NBVA club member Kris Klingaman. Those were good times...Too good to share all of them  ;D

Spent a little time today on the computer trying to put a road trip into reality and actually drove the Bug over to visit Canyon RV Park (part of Featherly Regional Park).  To put a long story short,
I was not permitted inside the park as they're not interested in letting non-RV types in... no day trippers, poparazzi, cruising, etc!!  Here's a link to the park as well as a map (our original photo
shoot was taken inside the small roundabout on the left side of the map... area Y15).  I tried.... :(

Jim,  Many thanks for your exploratory efforts.  For some reason I had a gut feeling it wouldn't turn out positive when I saw "RV" in the listing.  There are car shows there as that is what I ran into when out there last week.  I opted not to pay the $$ to go in and see a bunch of Low Riders.

I almost had to laugh when I saw the slogan listed on their web page, "Where Memories Are Made", but in our case it would be "Where Memories Were Made".  Sometimes you just can't go back no matter how bad you want to.

There are many other parks to choose from, so maybe we could still do something on the same order.  Who know, 40 year sf from now a new group of VW people would be looking at those photos and talking about how cool that was......    ;)

Okay, another story.  One of the Carlsbad Drag events Stan Davis decided to be towed via a bus and it might have been the "Toilet".  Stan placed his backside on a trash can lid and hung on to the two rope.  He wasn't there very long as things got HOT...   :o :o :o :o

The other memorable event occurred in the very early morning hours.  We were all in line for the gates to open and it was COLD.  There was a large trash can and some of us found what ever we could burn to keep warm.  Someone got "creative" and placed part of the Carlsbad Sign in the car and as it started to burn the owner, think his name was Larry, arrived.  When he saw this he did pull the sign and went ballistics wanting to know how had done this.  We all stood thee silent and waited for him to tell us to leave and never come back.

Somehow he calmed down and the even went on.  We won't mention any names here as to who supplied the sign to the fire, but as I recall his initials were "JE".  You guys figure it out......................    ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Hi Keith, It's been many years since we've talked or seen each other and thanks to the lounge here we are.

You are right about the Aronson '59 cabriolet.  Greg and I put together a package deal which you may remember.  I bought Greg's house that he and Jim Holmes shared for a while, he bought my mercedes for Jessica and I got the Porsche along with the house, remember that?  Anyhow, we put the Porsche motor back in the cabby with a 1750 kit and Greg driiled out the zenith manifolds and we put 42's on.  I later sold the car to Vasek Polak Porsche and he put it in his personal collection that was under his dealership.

Thanks for the paparrazi acknowledgements Bro ;D  As for the Toilet, I spent a load of time in the passenger seat with Greg at the wheel.  Back then, Greg was working out of his Dad's garage and I was fresh out of the Army trying to sell life insurance.  I spent WAY more time helping Greg by painting and installing the tin on the engines he was building.  We did all the parts chasing in the Toilet which had a bad habit of jumping out of fourth gear... to the point of Greg having to install a bungie cord under the seat to hold the shifter. ::) ;D  The high point of those days was 4:00pm when Highway Patrol came on TV.... BREAK TIME (time to siphon off a few beers from Dad's tapper).  Ah, the good old daze! 8)
