Danny,

well done for getting it back together so quickly, looks really good, just watched that video and it looks horrible :o :D  What torsionbars & shocks have you got on there? Also you really need to launch that on a 2step I think,it will help alot, the DTA has provision for it if you didnt already have it wired up?

cheers Richie

Post by: dannyboy on January 29, 2012, 23:12:08 pm
hi richie
the car has the same setup as it had when chris ran it
gaz coilovers and stock torsion bars it was ok until i wound them up a fair bit ::) i will move them back to where thy were last year and try again
when you are over mr sanchezes manor pop in and have a look

Title: Re: lil lizzy
Post by: richie on January 29, 2012, 23:15:21 pm
Ok,

not a fan of 2 springs on the same corner[torsion bar and coilover] but thats just my opinion,it obviously worked for Chris and for you :)  Why did you pre load it more, what are you trying to change? thought it always 60footed well before?

Will pm you when we are next coming over that way :)

cheers Richie

i mashed up the drive shafts/fulcrum plates and spider gears by having the arse to soft
but in hindsight i must have done that damage a while back as i had wound them up a bit near the end of last season when it was working well  ::) :D
never mind its all a big learning curve for me and im having a ball with it  ;D chuffed with a pb n/a while backing off a bit though must be more left in it than i thought

went on the rolling road yesterday after smoothing the map out it only made 157-159 fwhp  and that was a lot more than it made at the begining of the session

I'm sure someone on here had a calculation forum that would convert power and weight figures to et/mph?

Be interested to see if your figures match up?

Hi Danny, so yes, it is lighter but not super light - can't remember off hand kerb weight of standard bug of that year but have a feeling it's around 750 kgs ? - anyone correct me if that's way off please.

Hi Lee, yes I agree with both you and Neil and Danny and I were pondering all this the other day at the Rolling Roda. I have spoke to a few people re the validity of the figures from thoise rollers and they feel the figures are fairly accurate.

Yes if that formula could be found and used it might shed some light on this mystery as to how a car with only 150-16o bhp at flywheel weighing 690 kgs can run 12.2 naturally aspirated ??? Danny does run with Serpentine pulley and belt system in place and I have heard these rob a fair bit of power so this might up his figures by 20 bhp ? giving us up to 180 at the flywheel ??  Don't forget a lot of people quote flywheel bhp figures achieved off the dyno without cooling or transmission losses that factor in when using a rolling road as Danny did.

I for one was expecting to see between 195 - 210 bhp as a flywheel figure so was equally shocked, knowing how quick this car is.

wallace drag calc says 12.36@108mph with that weigth and hp

it made 168fwhp on a different dyno the springs are 2 years old cb650 i do run the same plugs all the time  as far as the timing afr info id have to ask ian at power engineering
as i dont know  :-[
he did say the dyno make approx 10-12 hp less than other dynos so it seems to be making the same power and

the other factor nobody seems to be allowing for is how good the driver is  ;D ;D ;D

Danny, in my old car I had a 2276 (10.5:1 comp, FK87 I think) that I bought off Jay Aldred. He'd run it in the first version of his buggy having had it built by John Maher. IIRC it had 48IDFs or 48DRLAs, and Wisecos to cope with a bit of nitrous when Jay had it, so I bought it without carbs/manifolds and without pistons/barrels. I put a set of Mahles on, my 48IDAs and had it rolling roaded at Raceshack. ::)
This is where the numbers get interesting. Jay had had the motor dyno'd when JMR built it, and it came out as 187.5bhp at the flywheel. Understandably I was quite disappointed with 129bhp at the wheels! >:( How can my transmission losses be nearly 60bhp?! >:( However, the purpose of the rolling road for me was to get the car running right and get the engine dialled in as best it could be, and the car ran pretty consistent low 12's (usually low 12.20's to mid 12.teens, best of 12.09) at 105-110mph, which I think is pretty close to where you were without gas?
I had a bit of a think after the first race meet of the year and remembered that the Mustang Dyno that Raceshack used needed a car weight inputting to the software to get all the numbers out. Unfortunately the softwares lowest weight setting that it would cope with was 2000lbs (907kg) and my car with me was 1639lbs (743kg), so a decent amount different. So I did a bit of working out.

First I wanted a correction factor for the weight of the car.
2000lbs/1639lbs=1.22, so that was what I had to work my RWHP figure against.
129bhp x1.22 = 157bhp corrected RWHP. That's more like it!
Then I figured in transmission losses, I'd read that 20% is about right.
157bhp x 1.2 = 188.9 corrected FWHP, close enough to what JMR had tested the motor at on his engine dyno.

Now this might just be a massive thread hijack, but in amongst those ramblings you might find a bit of info that helps you make sense of your numbers! ;D

Hi Neil,

That info is all very interesting indeed.

Danny's car was recently run up on a Dyno Dynamics Rolling Road which seem to be becoming more popular in the South East anyway, alledgedly for accuracy and consistency.

I agree with you the numbers are intresting and it's nice to have big one's but the real deal is as you say to endure your motor is performing as well as it can be efficiency wise etc.

My old JMR 2276 made 201 bhp at the flywheel no cooling on John's Stuska dyno. Within a week or two I took the bug down to Power Engineering and had it rolling roaded just for comparison and we got 202 bhp calculated at the flywheel with if memory serves 165 bhp at the wheels so nearly a 40 bhp loss through the transmission.

For those racing with cooling attached ( fanbelts ) the anount of power they sap varies and seems relative to the amount of power the engine produces - in general the more the engine makes the higher the losses seen to drive the fan.

On my new motor fitted with a "power pulley" this saps 14 bhp when belt is fitted.

You Raise another point here Shane, I didn't run cooling at all - when I had the little 1600 in the car I found that it made around 4/10th difference - yes, it was only in the high 15's, but with the belt on it wouldn't get out of the 16's at all.

176 na with belt on and 255 on the bottle the dyno is a bit tight on the numbers shane did a power run on the same dyno then went to another one and i think he made 18 more on the other one?

Yep as Danny says, I did back to back dyno rolling road sessions. No changes to set up at all. Both Dyno Dynamics rollers but the one Danny uses has a different newer software package and tends to read low compared to bhp figures previously achieved at other rolling roads. Even the technician where Danny goes says across a broad spectrum of cars his customers report this dyno seems to read around 15 bhp low as a calculated flywheel figure. My own car read 184 bhp flywheel ( with cooling attached ) and muffler at this road then read 200 bhp at the other dyno dynamics road. So I noted a 16 bhp difference.

If you apply that to Danny's figures his 176 bhp flywheel figure becomes 192 bhp which would seem about what you would expect with his spec 2276 efi motor n/a. Therefore his NOS figure with 65 hp jets of 255 becomes 271 bhp at flywheel on gas.

car ran good on the first few passes after  "oilfiltergate"  :D fitted a 30 shot of gas for tomorrow so we will see how it compares to the last motor on a small shot of gas .it certainly feels a lot more powerful na with 2 11.9s with a pretty poor 60ft as 11.8 was the best i ever ran on the old motor na

right a few issues with oilfiltergate turning into oildownthetrackgate on the sunday due to me not nipping up the oil pressure relif nut  ::) :o
resulting in the rngine buggering up the big end bearings  :( ...... anyhow on the way back from the track i rang alan from GAC he told me to bring it in and he will check it just in case, good job i did anyhow its all back in thew car now running oil lines on correctly  :D the new bgasser wings are on drilled and painted with the flake dummy headlights all from east coast gassers (robthemanx)  ;) the last thing to do before i can finally call the car car finished is a trip to prosign for neil to put the credits on the rear 1/4
but its finally looking how i first imagined it to  ;D ;D ;D

10.47@129mph i think there is a little more in it if all the elements line up  :D so im going to stick with the 96 fwhp jets for this season and wait to make sure engine is all good in winter rebuild before upping the jets to 120-150 over next season

I was at Jim's last month talking over plans for my car and while drinking tea, we stood at the back of yours for a while and used it as reference.

Certainly looks different now  ;D Those arms look great !

I like the way you say you'll start running some decent times! I'd consider 10.3s pretty decent! How far into the nines do you expect to go Danny?

Title: Re: lil lizzy
Post by: dannyboy on December 26, 2014, 21:05:11 pm
no idea neil, ultimatley im hoping to go low 9s but im not sure what itll take to get there, i would just like to run regular high 9s
10.3s was amazing considering the badly setup car as it was before, but i dont think there was longevity in using 150 hp of nitrous all the time,i still believe there was a high 9 in the old setup if i had the car setup properly as the coilover and torsion bars combined with stock springplates etc were not doing the job

Oooh that's nice, how narrow is the rear end now? Are you upping wheel/tyre size? I like the IRS setup, it should remain constant rather than camber on launch.
That engine turbo, nitrous combo should certainly liven things up not to say the old one wasn't  :o Can't wait to see this back out on track.

no idea how much narrower it is  :-[ :D im going up to  a 9 inch slick but wanted to be able to fit a 10 inch under there as well if needed ,i have no idea what to expect from the new setup ,but a few pbs would be nice  :D :D

I must admit , I was a bit dubious when you asked me to make some 2 inch oversize rear fenders with a flare on too , but with the fat rear end the car has now they really work well . Will you have enough clearance for the tyre when it squats ?

Looking forward to seeing it out again !

to be honest mate these are the old ones .i had issues with the offset on other rims even with oversize wings so i ordered a new set with much deeper backspace  there was a lot of clearance inside wheel on irs setup so i managed to get full travel of suspention without foulding the ol dwings  :) :) :)

And when you drop the oil, can I have it as it should boost the hp of my engine having merely been ran in yours. Any ideas for the first outing?

testing went ok got a issue with a bit of slip in first that is intermittent .could be driver error ?not sure main issue i had was the starter motor broke so i bought a cheap one to get back on track and that lasted about 5 starts.... but it ran 11.9  with either slip or massive wheelspin ????? in first so ill take that for a first weekends testing  :) roll on the next outing  :D

I wondered what was going on - I was following the reports on Eurodragster and saw a pic of Lizzy but then didn't see your number in the qualifying charts - no-one had names listed either, which was odd. Is it worth sticking a go-pro on the side of the car pointing at the back wheels to see if that gives any hints?

so the car is running well getting a little clutch slip in first on launch  so 60 fits are bad  but had a few 11.6 passes at 115mph  with 1.74 60fts   and one 1.62 60ft but missed 4th and had to shut off as a pushrod shit itself at the top end  but still ran 11.5  at 110 mph so plenty of potential ,motor feels soooo strong  8)

quick update ,had loads of gremlins that I've been working through or more like muddling through  :D anyhow most issues seem to be sorted now the rear end seems to work well and the zero camber change on rear is very noticeable with traction on the line ,playing with the cm adjustments to get the launch better and it ran 10.36 and 10.37 with fairly poor 60fts so i think theres a fair bit more in it yet
very happy with the whole car so big thanks goes to all involved in helping /working on car
