Title: New updated Salzburg pump available
Post by: Lids on July 30, 2012, 20:43:33 pm
First prototype, this was sent back for a few additional mods[attachment=1]

Final design:
Gears are larger than the original factory pump - 2 x 30mm on the engine and 3 x 26mm on the scavenge, the top side has more clearance to aid in fitting the pulley belt, the case scavenge union is set slightly lower & longer than the original works Salzburg pump to give more clearance to a standard type silencer box. Unions threads are 5/8" NPT.

What's it for?  Pardon my ignorance, but I've never seen a pump like that before...;D

Dry sump, I reckon.

correct.

You might ask why you would want to use this pump?  Well it allows stock size pulleys to be fitted.

How much are they?

Thanks.

Yh price?
At the moment I've got a D'S pump with 32mm pressure and 64mm scavange but I'm going to need about £400 of pulley system from speedshop to run it. Just worried about the smaller scavange?? But it worked for the slazbetg's.....

If you look at the spec its multiple gears so 78mm scavenge with 60mm pressure gears.

Out of interest, what size were the gears on the factory pump?

Cheers

This looks really cool, would it be possible to get the pressure side with axle support in both ends... and also the driven cog?

Not sure what you mean exactly (will pass question on) but if you look at the last pic closely you can see the axle supports for the two outer gears.

My question simplified, are all the gear axles supported on both sides? Or can they be for extra cost?

the original Salzburg pump had 2 x 26mm and 3 x 21mm

Yes all supported except the lower engine pressure gear which does not need a through shaft as it already has a long shaft.

Sorry but 30mm is too small to get the oil out of the engine . we are now at 38 mm and that works with 26 on the pressure side

Please explain.

This pump uses 3 x 26  = 72 if you use 2 x 38 = 76 no significant difference.  The 30 x 2 is on the pressure side.

its a good idea due to not having to faff with different size pulleys and also making exhausts fits also, which in fact would save a lot of money!

Where can I find more details on this? The website doesn't show anything.

what do you want to know ?

In short, everything! IMO, the design of this pump is brilliant as it allows the use of a standard size pulley. There's nothing else like it that I know of. But three prototype pictures and very little explanation of the design isn't going to be enough to get me to spend my money. What all is included? More detailed pictures of the pump by itself and mounted to a case, maybe even inside a car would be great so I can see what the clearance around exhaust systems, etc may be.
I'm curious to know why the engine pump gears are 30mm when 26mm works well in standard wet sump applications. I'm also curious to know why Udo thinks 30mm is too small. The original Salzburg pump utilized a factory 26mm pump on the scavenge (correct?), is this redesigned to streamline their design? I'm also trying to get my head around why there are 3 pressure gears and how they all work together. I can see that this product is in an entirely different league, but the CB 4 gear dry sump pump only uses two 21mm gears, and it also seems to work well.
In short, I have a conceptual understanding of dry sumps, but I'd like to know more about why this one is the way it is as I am seriously considering going to a dry sump for my next engine build.

FYI I spoke to Jim at the Slough swapmeet and he said that they are now all gone and that he probably wont do them again as most folk didnt like the price!!

Shame as it looked like an awesome bit of kit.

I would have been very interested in this product, shame it wasn't advertised or marketed at all before they are all sold, might have sold a few more to turn R&D costs into profit.

When i saw this post i was excited at the fact that a drysump pump was made and actually exist that would allow you to run the stock size crank pulley. Now all my excitement has gone to disappointment to hear the pump will not be made again i have a waterboxer to build and a T4 beast to build. To the original makers of the pump i would still make them but sell them in limited quantities to guys that really want them, this would mean that a waiting list system would exits, don't kill a good product because some people don't agree with your price.

Bad Bug (and others),
Just email Stateside direct and let them know, probably with a deposit...
