Title: Edit 16/17-8-2014 The Aircooled Elvington Mile: Land Speed Record runs
Post by: Airspeed on January 17, 2013, 22:49:10 pm
Happy to announce that I just got the date confirmed that we can (and will!) be able to run timed and sanctioned 1 mile top speed passes at Elvington airbase (UK) under the organisation of Straightliners who have lots of experience organising this for motorcycles.

We will join in a weekend where also bikes will make their runs and a Wheelie contest (for the bikes....) is also part of the program.

All aircooled (and even non-aircooled VW bugs and ghias etc) cars will be able to run, but special attention will be given to the 'International 36hp Challange' and all records set in Elvington will be eligible for the 36hp topspeed records when the guidelines for these classes were met: www.burlyb.com for more info or PM me.

Anyone from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark interested?
If so, pls PM me for details.

Best regards,
Walter

It would be cool to see some vintage speed cars joining us. At the moment two dutch lowlight Ghias will attend with 'Big Blocks' (non-36hp).

For any 30hp based car that will pass the 160,9km/h speed, Burly will personally send you this awesome silver hat:

and I will donate a cool Bonneville 36hp T-shirt the fastest 30hp based car of the event!

Best regards,
Walter

That would be very awesome Richie!

It scares me though to think of what speeds you're capable of attaining if you had an extra 3 quarters of a mile... ;D

Do let me know if your comming with a car or not, as spectating is free, but the participants pay for their own race in these events so costs are high to run (not your regular drag race fee).

Cheers,
Walter

I am thinking more of the 3 land speed cars that are sitting without engines in a dusty garage in the UK somewhere that need to see the light of day again :o ;)  Buit I would like to go 200mph in an aircooled car :o,another dream of mine  :)

I hadn't make that connection yet, but your soooo right of course! Silly me!
One of those is actually still the current all time fastest aircooled land speed racer ever! (187 mph iirc)
Pls do convey the opportunity  ;)

You know both ambitions can be had there... ::)
Wouldn't it be cool to take a few records from (the) americans?  ;D

I like your thinking!!

I need to make one minor correction. Yes, Larry Monrreals #57 green Ghia is the confirmed (santioned speed meet) fastest air cooled VW bodied car at 167.480 mph (269.532kph) in 1987. Larry used the 1875cc drag engine of Bob Godfrey. The fastest all time air cooled car is the lakester of Jared Collier and Mike Manghelli also at the Bonneville Speedweek. Mike built a 2800cc Autocraft engine that went 189.786 mph (305.431kph) in 1985. The other air-cooled VW that went fast was Hans Dahlback in Sweden. He took his 1955 street legal turbo-charged bug sedan to a top speed of 174.705 mph (281.160kph) in 1988 on a Swedish airport in a private, non-sanctioned top speed test.

Thanks for stating the current records Burly!

I think we should aim for the fastest aircooled with and without Aero records  ;D
as I think Richie has gone almost that speed (174) at the 1/4 mile alone already  ;)

If you think of participating, please let me know in advance, so I can fill you in with all the details, even if you decide not to run after all, lemme know if you consider it.

Cheers,
Walter

Walter, LSR speeds differ from drag speeds due to the fact the LSR speeds must be maintained for a much longer distance with a given engine. A competitive drag engine turning a fast quarter mile speed would in most likelihood blow up long before it ever reached the one mile timing trap used for most VW land speed racing. LSR engines, while highly tuned, are not quite as "delicate" as drag engines and subsequently, the two types of speeds/records cannot be truly compared. Kind of like F1 cars and LeMans racers, LSR racers are focused more towards engine endurance plus top speed.

To keep record keeping simple, the Big Block and Water Cooled VW Challenge records are selected only by main body style with the only variations being those powered by 36hp engines, since they in no way could compete with their more modern Big Block siblings. SCTA/BNI full competition racing offer's over 543 different class breakdowns in the automobile categories and another 370 motorcycle classes. The SCTA/BNI classes do break down the body styles from Production (no aero) to Altered (minimal aero) to Competition (maximum aero) along with many other engine, induction and gas/fuel type considerations to reach that number of classes. As a matter of practicality, the VW Challenge records will always be kept simple with minimal classes to eliminate confusion.

Thanx for the question.............................

Burly

 INTRODUCTION:

A crew of four North Carolina craftsmen have been building the body, chassis and engine for what is a recreation of the most beautiful Volkswagen ever crafted, the infamous 1939 Volkswagen KDF Type 64 (aka Type 60K10) Berlin to Rome racer.

(http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr301/36hplandspeedracer/36%20Type%2064/type64010-Copy_zps245ffc6d.jpg) (http://s494.photobucket.com/user/36hplandspeedracer/media/36%20Type%2064/type64010-Copy_zps245ffc6d.jpg.html)

This very special project began almost three years ago and is now 80% complete. The chassis is rolling and the front and rear windows were recently fitted.

(http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr301/36hplandspeedracer/36%20Type%2064/DSCN07532-Copy_zpsccba0f01.jpg) (http://s494.photobucket.com/user/36hplandspeedracer/media/36%20Type%2064/DSCN07532-Copy_zpsccba0f01.jpg.html)

The car will compete in the 36hp Challenge Unlimited 36 category and the teams goal is to capture the fifty one year old record of Dick Beiths Pepco supercharged belly tank racer (aka lakester). Minimum speed goal is 130 miles per hour against the 51 year old record of 129.68 miles per hour.

(http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr301/36hplandspeedracer/36%20Type%2064/type64171-Copy_zps22c64164.jpg) (http://s494.photobucket.com/user/36hplandspeedracer/media/36%20Type%2064/type64171-Copy_zps22c64164.jpg.html)

Wolfsburg Wests Okrasa style heads will be part of the potent big bore 36hp engine being developed to meet and then exceed their goals. Our "1" Club hats are off to Bruce, Dave, Whitey and Elbert.

UPDATE:

It has been a couple of months since we first introduced the Type 64 project being crafted in North Carolina for the 36hp Challenge. Below are some new photos showing the progress to date. The world is watching as this team continues to create a very special reproduction of the 1938 Volkswagen Type 64.

Very happy to inform you that Peter has broken the WW36 Bus land speed record with his '52 Barndoor by quite a margin: he drove it to 85,8 mph (last record was 68,xx mph) at Elvington just two weeks ago now.
Big congratulations to Peter Englezos from Cogbox transmissions!!

Title: 36 Hp Type 64 Coming to the Challenge
Post by: 36hplandspeedracer on January 13, 2015, 20:07:58 pm
Below are two new photos of the T64 dash and engine compartment plus reposts of earlier photos that became deleted. Hopefully these will not disappear a second time! While you can see progress is being made, this will be the last update post for awhile.

The publicity this car has generated created a problem for the builders with too many interruptions from both media and curious observers calling and stopping by the shop(s) and it has seriously slowed their ability to spend time completing the T64 versus "talking about it"! Any further updates will be at the discretion of the builders and it is requested that all contact with them be deferred until after completion of this very special 36hp Challenge racer.

G'day everyone

Below is the latest T64 36hp Challenge racer update from Dave at Copacetic. Enjoy.........

Burly

Happy New Year!

It has been a long time since the last photos in July, but the work continues.

(http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr301/36hplandspeedracer/36%20Type%2064/DSCN2294_zpsq2ahpbwy.jpg) (http://s494.photobucket.com/user/36hplandspeedracer/media/36%20Type%2064/DSCN2294_zpsq2ahpbwy.jpg.html)

The doors and lids have been been assembled. The front lid and doors are hinged and latched.

(http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr301/36hplandspeedracer/36%20Type%2064/DSCN2269_zpsjtqixx1t.jpg) (http://s494.photobucket.com/user/36hplandspeedracer/media/36%20Type%2064/DSCN2269_zpsjtqixx1t.jpg.html)

The rear lid needs more attention to the fit, and it will be pinned and latched rather than hinged.

(http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr301/36hplandspeedracer/36%20Type%2064/DSCN2273_zpsjljzotdb.jpg) (http://s494.photobucket.com/user/36hplandspeedracer/media/36%20Type%2064/DSCN2273_zpsjljzotdb.jpg.html)

The difficult engineering and design issues have been solved, though I am certain that there will be refinements before the project is complete.

(http://i494.photobucket.com/albums/rr301/36hplandspeedracer/36%20Type%2064/DSCN2259_zpsrepnxxmb.jpg) (http://s494.photobucket.com/user/36hplandspeedracer/media/36%20Type%2064/DSCN2259_zpsrepnxxmb.jpg.html)

Yes, there is still a lot of work left, but I can see the completed body from here.

I’m still working on the taillight configuration, but I think I’ll stick with “snowflakes.” Fortunately, the taillights will be pretty simple to change around. It looks like each of the original T64's had three distinct and different configurations, so I figure a fourth would have also.

The rear 3/4 view shows the "snowflake" 55 to 57 taillight assemblies. I will describe them as "non T64" style to distinguish the clear definition between the Copacetic T64 vehicle(s) and the KDF originals.

I’ll let the engine and chassis guys update you on their progress.

Out of country Challengers will need to email the address below for a quote on shipping to non U.S.A. addresses.

Below is the image on the front of the T64 "T".

"Versuchswagen" translates to "Experimental Car" in German, which is a great name for the team of dedicated VW enthusiasts recreating this most rare and iconic Volkswagen from the mind of Dr. Porsche.

Just received these photos of the next stages of the DSS36 36hp engine being crafted for the Type 64 36hp Challenge racer by Whitey Worsham of North Carolina. Simply amazing the new technology being applied to these ancient engines. Photos by Bruce Cook.

The Type 64 crew from North Carolina has shared many body images and now the the highly modified 36hp engine being prepared by Whitey Worsham of German Automotive together with Bruce Cook is nearing completion. The photos below share some of the technology Whitey has engineered into the mighty 36er including a solution to the problem of lifter angle when using Porsche 356 lifters and finding 85.5mm pistons. Enjoy............

Title: Type 64 Coming to the 36hp Challenge
Post by: 36hplandspeedracer on March 28, 2016, 20:26:57 pm
The Type 64 crew from North Carolina has shared many body images and now the the highly modified 36hp engine being prepared by Whitey Worsham of German Automotive together with Bruce Cook is nearing completion. The photos below share some of the technology Whitey has engineered into the mighty 36er including a solution to the problem of lifter angle when using Porsche 356 lifters and finding 85.5mm pistons. Enjoy............

amazing engineering!
i don't understand the cylinder head though? have they welded up the exhaust port cooling fins? water cooling?

Jeff Huber of the Gear Garage has completed the transaxle for the T64 and all the components are now coming together in preparation for the first test. When Bruce Cook reinstalls the Dave Miller/Copacetic body back on the race prepped chassis, it will be for the final time. Stay tuned, getting close............

Title: Type 64 Tribute is Race Ready
Post by: 36hplandspeedracer on February 12, 2018, 00:20:59 am
The Type 64 tribute car is finished and race ready.

The results of the Team Versuchwagen Type 64's A2 Wind Tunnel test were spectacular and verified the aero efficiencies of Kommendas original sketches. And some surprises as well. In the tunnel, the vehicles tires are placed on top of sensitive computer connected electronic scales mounted under the floor which record variations in pressure as air flows over, under and around the body at various wind speeds. The biggest surprise (lesson?) came when improvement was found by removing the Copacetic Metal Shaping fabricated full belly pan along with the rear fender skirts/spats. This combination provided the most stable pressures at higher air flow speeds. It was determined the rear skirts/spats added 50 pounds of lift to the rear! It was also determined that installing a 4 3/4 inch  tall perfectly vertical spoiler at the rear deck lid area would actually reduce lift, add stability "and reduce drag" making higher speeds possible without increasing horsepower. There is no front splitter, air dam or spoiler. The wind tunnel engineer running the tests indicated he had never seen such a early example of aerodynamics prove so successful. Kudos to Erwin Kommendas foresight and natural aero expertise.

This car will be raced just once in the Type 64 configuration, in April at the ECTA speed trials in Blytheville, Arkansas, http://ecta-lsr.com/. After that, Dave will remove the T64 tribute body where it will then be installed on a second VW chassis/floorpan designed strictly for street driving at which point you can expect to see Dave enjoying the car at east coast Volkswagen and Porsche events. Bruce Cooks race based VW Beetle floorpan will then have a stock Volkswagen Type 1 sedan body installed and then delivered to the A2 Wind Tunnel to give us the first actual wind tunnel test of a Beetle air cooled sedan. After the VW Beetle wind tunnel test, the Bug will return to Arkansas for a attempt to capture the 36hp Challenge DSS (vintage dual carb) Bug record.

Press Release

Team Versuchen
Type 64 Tribute Vehicle
March 5, 2018

For immediate release:

Deja Vu

It has happened again. In 1939 Dr. Porsche created the KDF Typ 64 competition car to race in the Berlin to Rome high speed endurance race. World War 2 happened and the Typ 64 never turned a wheel in anger, leaving Dr. Porsches dream unfulfilled. Deja Vu, and now the new handcrafted Typ 64 tribute car created to race for top speed records has met a similar fate.

Much to our regret, Team Versuchen, the group preparing to race the recently completed Type 64 KDF/VW/Porsche tribute car, has no option but to announce that planned competition with the car in April at the E.C.T.A. land speed event in Blytheville, Arkansas, will not take place. Due to legal complications, Team Versuchen has severed all ties with Copacetic Metal Shaping and Dave Miller.

It saddens us to advise all Team Versuchen followers, especially after all the effort and investment over the past six years, that it will not be possible to utilize the Type 64 tribute body or the unique custom components designed specifically for this special vehicle in a competitive environment.

All of your interest and support has been greatly appreciated.

Sincerely

Team Versuchen
Bruce Cook

Hi, What a shame. It would have been awesome to see it run and used for what it was built for.
Is there any chance it will be used somewhere else?
Cheers Paul
