Title: My 1975 late looker (late bugs can be just as cool)
Post by: JoeHurley1892 on February 18, 2013, 15:22:40 pm
Hi cal look lounge  :),

I have been a member on here for quite a while and i thinks its about time i put my pride and joy up on here for you all to see.

It is a 1975 1200 bug in its orginal miami blue colour.

It has been well looked after its whole life, so no bad rust to bother me haha :P

I have owned it for almost 2 years and i am constantly doing things to it.

Anyways, here is how I got it day 1.

It had some nice added touches to it such as quickshift, dropped spindles disc brakes convertion and Revoultion RFX Wheels

These Door cards where put in by the previous owner in the 90's ( i think the style gives it away) So went and got some standard ones

I never liked the wheels that came with car, they just didn't suit the style i was trying to give out of the car.

I was at a local vw show and saw a set of wheels which i liked.

They are Centerline copies (Smiths Wheels???)

As u can see they look abit horrid, and i thought... ah i little clean will get that all of.....how wrong was I.

Basically water has got under the lacquer, which gave it the snail trail apperance and the only thing to do is rub it down
I have no access to any air tools so it all had to be done by hand  :'(

It started coming up by using 400wet/dry and this how they looked after that, as u can see a majority of is off
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo1411.jpg)

Now i went through the grades and when back up to 1200 to give a reasonable shine, I then hand polished it with Autosol.... seems to be getting there
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo1706.jpg)

I then gave them a machine polish and got them to this  ;D. I personally don't think that is too bad for my first wheel refurbishment.

I then got some new Bridgestone  rubber for them, 195x65x15 at the back and 165x50x15 at the front

....a bit of a difference in size haha

I was getting bored of the 35hp so it was time for abit power and noise  ;D

I got  a 4into1 with glasspack exhaust

As the exhaust has just got protective paint for delivery on it, i had to get that all off and then put heat proof paint on it. Heres a few pics of it

Rubbed Down
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo2441.jpg)

First Coat of Paint
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo2442.jpg)

After loads of coats of paint, Gave it a quick coat of gloss black to make it shiny lol....even though u won't see it haha
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo2448.jpg)

Off with the old and on with new
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo2459.jpg)

With glasspack on, i was little dissapointed because it is not as loud as everyone says they are, but still gives a nice throaty roar. On the plus side it pops flames :D

Heres this cheeky homemade stinger my dad had on his oval about 25 years ago
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo2436.jpg)

So i had to bolt it on too see how loud it is  ;D

Heres a video of it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gk7apW4oWNA&list=HL1361198583

It doesn't do the stinger justice it was quite loud and very poppy :D

It was now time to sort out its stance  :D

I first got shocks all round
KYB Gas adjusts for the back
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3240.jpg)

KYB GR2 for the front
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3187.jpg)

The Build
For people that know the car, they always mocked the silly arch gap it had, and also the poke which i disliked lol. So I thought it was about time it did something about it.....

I am not particularly a big fan of stupidily narrowed beams so I thought a 2inch Adjustable Narrowed Beam would be ideal as the wheels and disc brakes would keep it from being tooo narrow and give just another tuck I am after.

Heres the new beam with old

With the Help of Danny Allen (Dubz-by-Dan) we first trial fitted putting the new beam together.

Firstly we checked to see where the leaves had to be cut
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3251.jpg)

and where the new dimples need to be drilled
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3356.jpg)

It also had to be converted to RHD which was simple enough to do
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3357.jpg)

Heres the beam all built......now time to fit:D

For laughs we wound them down, so the car was as low as it could go and this is the result lol

This will stop people moaning at my arch gap, (you couldn't even fit a penny in that gap lol.... that is waxoyl again not rust lol)

Woooops (it was that low the stud on the adjuster was anchoring the ground :D

I think it did look awesome like that but a little impractical, Danny thought we should just cut the thread and it would be fine so it was jacked up and came across this

Just driving up and down the yard a few times had actually removed the inch or so thread we thought was there to cut and was gradually going through the nut at the same time lol
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3401.jpg)

We lifted it up abit and Danny wanted the arse down on it as well, so we did that as well lol

So we dropped the rear down one spline
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3403.jpg)

and this was how it was when i took it home
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3400.jpg)

Looked better then before, but was to impractical and wasn't really what I was going for.

Just went for a little photo shoot of the car since having the suspension changed and sorted properly. I took these in the same place as how it was before the change as well.

Front:2inch narrowed adjustable beam, dropped spindles
Rear: +4 on the inner spline and -4 on the outer spline dropping it about 1inch.

Tyres:
Fronts 165x50x15 (Need to get slighly higher profile)
Rears 195x65x15

First thing was to sort the tracking and all that coz it defnatley needed sorted after fitting the new beam. So went down to my dads work and used his special machine :D

All the window realted stuff was getting tired so it need freshing up. First was the window rubbers.

I got a cal look window rubber kit.

Old ones
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3462.jpg)

...

Next was the chome surrounds

Old
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3711.jpg)

Next was the quater lights

Old
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3714.jpg)

New
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3715.jpg)

All Done :)

Title: Re: My 1975 late looker (late bugs can be just as cool)
Post by: JoeHurley1892 on February 18, 2013, 16:00:44 pm
Next was the wingbeading. The person who resprayed this obviosuly couldn't be bothed to take the wings off, so i have blue beading.

Old
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3718.jpg)

New
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3719.jpg)

Next on the neverending list was the running boards. Again these were getting tired and out of shape. Suprising none of the bolts were seized, which was a relief.

So fresh GERMAN quality ones were ordered. I ditched the chrome trim. ( I got rid of the stone guards as well)

The glasspack wasn't loud enough for me, and also wanted something slightly different.

So got myself a stainless bike can for £5 and fitted it to abit of Landrover 3inch fat exhaust pipe lol. Makes people think i have a monster engine in there hehe :D

It has abit more of a roar to it lol (Probably one of the cheapest stainless exhaust around as well haha)

Next on the neverending list was the interior

First was the seats

I came across these bucket seats on ebay. They are called Atech and are very comfortable.

They were a mission to fit as they sat to high on the original seat runners and i didn't want to bolt them to the floor. So the frame were cut by 2inch in height and the big hump thing on the floor pan was cut out and a new one fabricated.... but they are in and slide.
Stripped
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3724.jpg)

New "hump thing"

In...phewww
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo3756.jpg)

While they were going in a carpet was put in, but i don't have a photo of that.

Last but not least was the steering wheel. Its just a mountey one
I also made a new storage place where the radio used to be. It used to be a cd holder from some other car (which you can see in the picture below as well).

I took part in the Cannonball 89 Run from Lakeside to Southend.

What a bonkers cruise, there was dubs all over the place driving in all directions, so I followed one and just hoped it was the right way lol.

Luckily it was and the photographer snapped this shot of my car, it is now my desktop picture lol

We stopped for a mini show and shine and grabed something to eat at Karmann Konnection. It was packed by the time I had got there followed the wrong VW this time, so there was little parking space.  (Just my luck to follow the peach car which got an award for being the most lost)
I then got held up in the middle of the road and told to leave it there..... so I did and we blocked the road off....Sorry Saaffend

I popped over to Dubz-by-Dan to give danny a paint code. I then left with my car now running t-bars and indicators relocated.
Work that one out lol

I am amazed how doing a little change makes a big difference.

Fancy Shot (through a Cadburys purple bay window)lol
(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/My%20Beetle/Photo4374.jpg)

Having the indicators in the bumper, the intention was if I was going to run t-bars I would have put lucas lights on. I placed them in various places but they just never looked right. The wings always seemed abit cluttered imo.

So I suggested to Danny, how about we put them in the headlights. With abit of fiddling they were in.

Also got it into Ultra VW

and discovered this on the battlesbridge show review

Awesome!!!!!

Also went to players 6.0 back in Spetember.

What an awesome show, worth going to, even got a spot in the hanger.

(For you who don't know what players show, it is one of the biggest modifed car shows in the UK held on an airbase and in 2 hangers.)

Scrolling through the thousands of photos taken at the show, I came across these of mine, which i think look really cool.

Enjoy!!!!

I took part in the Volksworld 25th Party at Brands Hatch, where they were attempting to get as many aircooled VWs on the track for a massive photo.
I am not sure how many were there but it was easily in the hundreds.

And also found a picture of my car going round Brands Hatch :)

The show season is done for another year, so it is now time to start buying more stuff for the bug.

I havn't done much to it, I changed the fornt tyres to 155x60x15 so I can now have passengers in it.

Also got myself some 3inch  4point Willians harness, can't wait to fit them :)

I am hoping to have a little mouse motor  ;) in it for the next show season. so hopefully update you when it is getting built up

Its been too long, since i updated.
Since the weather has finally decided go above 0 it is time to fit these harness's.

First was to strip the rear.

As i don't have a rollcage yet, I had to fit the harness with a bit of modification.

I made a bar which would bolt where the rear seatbelt would bolt too. This would be storng to take the load.

Fitted,

I am not intending to fit rear seats anyways, so a bit of wood and carpet will do for now. Until i can get a proper carpet kit fitted.

Havn't updated on here for a while.  Currently draining my money on building an engine, but this came up cheap so had to get it.

I already had 40% reduced throw, but this 60% reduction feels completly different alot smoother through the gears.

Its been a while again, i know, but been saivng up and building a new engine for mine. I have finally built it and got it running, so thought upload it all in one go.

The plan was to build something that fun, relable and reasonably economical as it is my daily. So the plan was to build a HOT 1600.

I do like it when the postie arrives :D (Thanks Beetleragtop for most of the parts)

This is going to built using an AS41  1200 case with dual relief. The didn't need line boring or anything, first was to give a clean and drill and tap for full flow.

Started almost instantly which is a good sign :D

Soon time to fit it but first had to cut access panels to tune the Webers when there in.

First by cutting the holes out.

Came up with my own access panel covers from Ali louvered plates used inside of buildings for ventilation. They were £2 each  from tool station, Lightweight and easy to bend and mould to the inner wing and also may provide some coolng for the engine. I colour coded them and they fit a treat :) ( The studs have been cut down since picture taken).

Its been too long, but not much to report.

Just had it MOT and it passed which is good news :)

(http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l640/JoeHurley/20140315_080607_zpsace83d6e.jpg) (http://s1127.photobucket.com/user/JoeHurley/media/20140315_080607_zpsace83d6e.jpg.html)

Bad News the HOT 1600 started making a horrible knocking noise, worried it was the big end gone. Took it out and put thee old reliable 1200 back in for now to get me about.

Stripped the 1600 and on inspection the only thing out of place was the gudgeon pin on number 1 piston had started to sieze :( everything else was fine.

So the plan next is to build a new engine and this time it is going to be a little different, a little bit curious and a little bit crazy but I am building a HOT 1200 just to see what you can out of these little engine.

So watch this space.......

The HOT 1200 Build:

Due to other engine blowing up and insurance companys being a pain, i decided to build a HOT 1200 instead, I had always considered it just to see what i ended up with. This is to be a true 1200, no bigbore kits or skimmed 1200 conrods on a 69mm crank.

I started by using the AS41 case and the full flow setup from the 1600 engine as the starting block, and thats where similarities stayed.

I started with a 64mm crank which I got balanced and 8 Dowelled to take the 12lb lightned flywheel

(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3868/14867343401_7be45392b1.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/122395504@N07/14867343401/)

(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3899/14870399605_3949f2153d.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/122395504@N07/14870399605/)

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5557/14683787768_289b4ba398.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/122395504@N07/14683787768/)

Next up, was the barrel and pistons, it was an absoulte mission to find late 1200 barrel and pistons no one did or were out of stock.

So it dawned on me the only difference between a 1200 and 1300 is the crank size and 1300 pistons take the bigger 22mm gudgeon pin.

I had a set of high comp domed 1300 B+Ps so I would use these, however this would mean I would have to modify the 1200 conrods as 1300 conrods do not fit a 64mm crank.

The engineer managed to do them, but said he never wants to do another set again because it was so difficult lol

Just to put a spanner into the work, we also made the 1200 twinport as well.

So we used 1300 twinport heads which were slightly massaged to improve flow.

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5554/14870022022_ff3947f4ee.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/122395504@N07/14870022022/)

When measuring deckheight we had a small problem and that was the 1300 barrels would have given it very low compression due to it have the smaller crank, so to fix this we used 1200 Barrels which are shorter and this raised compression signifcantly lol

1200 on the left 1300 barrel on the right (bit of a difference)

Not only was I changing the engine but also the transmission

I wanted a performance box, just so that if I go for a bigger capacity motor in the future, it all there in the car already.

I was looking to build a performance one, however the price of parts indivdually would cost alot more then buying a Rancho ProStreet so I did that instead.

After 10 weeks of waiting it arrived :D

Just to make it more different I have some wider wheels to sit on the back, but at the moment they stick out the wings.
To fix that I will be using driveshafts form an oval which are 1.5" shorter then my current ones.

Engine is in YAY!!!!
Its runs great, sounds like a bigger engine, you have to pinch yourself sometimes to realise its a 1200. And also more room in the engine bay as its quite a narrow engine.

(I will be getting a new valence and decklid as these are getting abit grubby now)

decided the time had come for the elephant lights to go. The wings were going abit rusty and one was repro anyways so thought it was time for a change.
I didnt want to give the impression I wanted to make the car look look like an early looker, so I have decided to go for 1200 Lights at th back as they did use this on 1973 basic 1200 Models, So i am only 2 years out ;p.

As you know by now this car is built not bought and everything is done at home. So I guess its time for me to build a spraybooth.

For a first attempt at prepping and painting myself I dont think its too bad. There are a few places where its not mega smooth and abit thin of paint in places but its all things I can improve next time.

Looks great Joe, especially like the headlamp rims. Only change I'd make cosmetically is the rear lights - they look a little lost with the big valance and bumper slots. Tombstones would visually fit better I think. Love the 1200 too!

Obviously I have the scoops to allow cool air in, however no real way of it escaping as i dont want a vented decklid or standoffs.

So I decided to have some subtle air holes behind the number plate.

Started off with a 1300 decklid so had to weld the holes up and abit of filler and also cut the holes. (There is also an addition 36 holes drilled inside the decklid for abit of weight reduction :P

I had a week of from work and decided to start stripping the car out abit more.

I always hated the carpet kit I got for this car it never fitted properly and just looked rubbish. So I took the back half of it out and thought i would leave it just steel.

However there was 40 Year old carpet glue to contend with. Tried everything under the sun to get rid of it (Evostick remover, white spirit etc) The only that came close was a toffee wheel but that still took forever.

So i thought sod it, sand it back and respray it.

Here it is with the bare metal bits in etch.

Its been a while, as i have been collecting lots of bits for the new engine.

However finally had time to fit my new 1.2kg fibreglass rear valence.

The old valence was completely rotten and it pissed me off every time i saw it.

In addition the new valence is removable as well which should make getting the engine out bit easier.

Rotten!!!

I noticed the engine was leaning on one side, which i thought was bit odd.

So I looked at the gearbox mounts.... and sure enough one was knackered.

Engine out time it is then, lets test how much quicker I can get the engine out without a valence.

35mins later... its out.

As you can see the bottom right (in picture) has started to perish.

Being a late bug they use different mounts. So the new heavy duty grey wouldn't fit on the existing cradle.... I guess I will have to uprate that as well. The new cradle is bit more beefier haha.

So the time has come to finally see what this engine can do. So took it to North Weald Test and Tune.

It was very very busy, however managed to get 2 runs in. The best run I got was 22.83. I little bit disappointed as I wanted close to 20 Seconds.

However people who know North Weald know it isn't the smoothest of strips, the damp ground and headwind hitting the car on the way up also didn't help. So there is a possibility that the car was probably going a couple of seconds slower then what it can actually do.

Maybe advancing the timing bit and removing the fan belt may give it a little more as oomph . So I reckon there is a 20 second time in this engine.

On the plus side both times I was leaving the lights quicker then the other cars. First being a a 250hp Focus ST and the 2nd time a 500hp Pontiac hehe.

The only things I did to prepare for this is I took the air filters off, bolted the stinger on and removed the passenger seat.

Wow!!! Its been nearly 2 years since I updated this.

In September 2016 I decided to take it of the road for a winter to do 'SOME" rust repairs and a few upgrades.

Well the rust repairs and upgrades ended up nearly being a full restoration on the car,

Fast forward to May 2018 and it is finally ready to get back on the road.

Here is what I have been up to in the past 1 and half years.

Rust Repairs

Using the car daily had taken its toll on the car and i knew it needed some repairs doing, however I didn't realise the extend of what needed doing.

I started with a small patch on the floorpan and while I was sealing it up I noticed that the bottom of the heater channel looked abit soft. A little prod and scrape and I basically there wasn't one left.

Rear End

I always wanted to paint the tacky anodised blue air scoop things and get rid of some of the rust but to do this I had to take engine out.

However I didn't stop there and ended up doing a lot more to the engine bay. Whoops

This is how tired it was looking. As you can see one of the engine trays feel out.

(https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1727/40650297640_9f915b1f69_z.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/24W8pfG)20170129_174517 (https://flic.kr/p/24W8pfG) by Hurley Photography (https://www.flickr.com/photos/147589619@N04/), on Flickr

Then I got hold of a grinder and got carried away.

I enlarged the engine bay so it is easier to fit a twin carbed engine in the bay, but  I  still wanted to keep it reasonably stock looking on the outside. That was as much as i dare cut that the deckled still had something to sit on.

Just as I thought I was done with buying stuff,

I was at a show, talking to my dad and was like "A roll cage would really finish the inside of the car." And he was like "abit like the one I'm leaning on lol"

So that was quickly bought. Thanks megabug :)

I know its only a bolt in cage but megabug told me that this was the cage used for the bugstuff at the Volksworld Show before they went to health and safety and now have erecting tent competition instead wwwooooooow ::)

(For you non uk folk, the bugstuff was an event to see how many people that could get in a beetle in one go)

So this cage must be pretty strong.

So this needed painting miami blue of course :P

Now the battle was to get it in, Many ratchet straps and hands were needed, but It went in. I made spacers and used strong grade bolts to hold it in place.

I started with fitting the breather box, with the extra clearance that can be tucked right up high.

I was intending to build a 2276 turbo however, it was getting expensive and my bedroom is already full of car parts, so for the time being I am going to build a stroker engine with parts I have lying about. But first what crank shall i use hahah  :P

I  have a HOT 1600 which had 60bhp at the wheels in bits so I thought I would reuse most of the parts but add a 74mm crank I also had lying about in it. This will make it a 1699cc

Due to those monster trumpets i was having decklid clearance issues. I didn't want the standard deckled stands off as they don't look right on a late bug.

So I thought I would create my own and have it quick release as well.

I can't put hood pins on the side of the engine bay as I have cut them out to much for the breather box. So I have made them this way I can still run a standard decklid if that ever crossed my mind lol.

Thanks :), the bar that my harness is attached to is just a bit of metal i had lying about bolt to the original rear seat mounts, and the rear seat area is just 2 sheets of Ali panel painted satin black. I had it as 2 so I don't have to lift the whole lot up to get to the battery.

What it does is reduce travel at the rear when hard launching over bug ones, its just from what I read in books and what they used to do back in the day.

I am also running 26mm torsion bar and gas shocks so hopefully this combo will be a good compromise for street/strip.

I have only done 50miles on this new setup so can't really give any cons till I have done driven it a bit more and done some drag racing :)

Im sure some more experienced people on here will give you more of an insight into rear suspension setups.

Wow, great progress!
She looks new ;)

Thankyou :)

Thank you :)

Looks good Joe 8)  Did you get to drive it with new engine much yet?

cheers Richie

I have only done about 50 miles in it so far. It has a nice Carb chatter after 3000rpm :D
