Title: 8" slicks with stock width rear?
Post by: Jonny Grigg on December 27, 2013, 19:46:30 pm
Hi,

Just wondering whether anyone has fitted 8" slicks into a stock width rear end (swing axle, 21 3/4 torsion bars, short axle). I don't really fancy narrowing the torsion housing or cutting any more of the inner wing out.... By my reckoning I can get an 8" tyre in there, but it is tight and I have to lose the JayCee retainers and Swayaway adjustable spring plates....

From measuring and measuring again, I think I can do it with a Hoosier slick (9.7" section width) and a 7" wheel with a 4.5" inset. I need 3.75" on the offset including tyre to fit inside the arch, which means I have 6" on the inside... Close to the bodywork but looks like it clears. I am using 1" wider rear wings, but it is all cigarette paper stuff.... I will also have to change the spring plate and retainer set up, so am looking now at the Atomwerks adjustable drop plates, which look like they will be just about ok as the adjuster bit sits inside the wheel rather than along side the tyre....

Anyone else had any success fitting 8" tyres without narrowing the back end?

I had 8" slicks on a street race car with original fenders . but it is very close. Only works with original spring plates and cut the body braket inside the rear tire housing a little
i had the new style axle tubes and 6" fuchs rims made bigger to 7 on the inside.  MT 8,5 and MH tires

I had 8inch Phoenix on the old cab when they were still available, they just cleared with a stock rear wing and nothing cut from the inside at all, so yes it can be done, it was IRS but the only difference I see there is the offset needed for the wheels, with a 1inch wider wing it should fit easy :)

cheers Richie

Thanks Richie and Udo. Out if interest, can you remember the wheel offset and tyre section widths either of you guys ran?

No idea on the tyre section widths, but wheels are 6 1/2, 4inches in, 2 1/2 inches out Ercos

It can fit but it will depend on what you have for brakes, and what offset rim.

I just changed from a MT 8.5 to a Hoosier 8 and the side wall is wider.(7" rim)
Mine just fitted. just.

I had 8" MH 22 years ago and they were awesome fit, but I think you can only get 8.5's now.

Love the Hoosier traction, since it is the softer compound.

Thanks. Brakes are Jamar billet, but will need new hubs machining to take a Chevy 4.75" bolt pattern- no big deal- but also means I can fine tune the ultimate wheel position.

Looks like it'll all fit, so I might do a bit of internet ordering  ;)
