Title: 70's Cal Look Guages - any pic's ???
Post by: Lee.C on August 05, 2007, 22:30:06 pm
Well as the title says guys I am looking for some pic's of "Original" 70's Cal Look Guages - I have heard the term "Cockpit" guages by VDO - Does this refer to a "Series" they did  ???

What guages did Mike Mahaffery have  ???

What guages are in the Chop top ???

What guages does Dave Rhoads run ???

Come on guys show me what you've got - I think you know why I'm asking  ;) :)

cockpit are a series of gauges by VDO, they were the most popular.  It looks like these have been constantly updated over the years.  Autohaus used to sell them.

VDO Cockpit...
The Chop-Top and Dave Rhoads' car both use this style.

This site gives you an idea of what's still available...

i already did some studies on the topic.

more correct gauges in my opinion would be: smiths replica or stewart warner deluxe on a plexiglas dash, or black vdo on a steel welded dash or padded by black vynil

Title: Re: 70's Cal Look Guages - any pic's ???
Post by: simon uk on August 08, 2007, 14:34:01 pm
there are some rather foul looking gauges around from the 70's! Those green logod gauges are disgusting but that makes them kind of cool. You would have to mount them in a black vinyl dash to get away with it them though  :) Still with stock style VDO, or EMPI or Speedwell for the classical look I think.

Si.

I had a feeling there might be some STRONG opinions about these AWSOME guages - I LOVE THEM  ;) :)

Also Bullit you are "right" Smiths or SW's might be more "correct" but I want to be alittle different  ;) :)

Also I am pretty sure it will be a padded vynil dash - still undecided though :)

hey monki there is not so much space to be different when u own a twenty million buit car!!! ;D ;D
everytrhing yuo do someone did before!!!!!!!!! :'(

in my opinion when in seventies they padded dashes their wish was to be modern. so no room for other things that black ring gauges  on black base. indepedently on the brand.

ran the jet cockpit gauges in my 66 bus in the early 1980's, wish I still had them (not the bus, except for how much their worth), just have the fuel gauge left.  very cool looking guage in the right car.

Interesting looking speedo: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=863201 (http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=863201) (Never seen before.)

Quote
VDO, 100 mph speedometers like this one were an option available at VW dealers and some speed shops about 1967 to 1972. They are more rare then the stock 80 and 90 mph VDO trip speedometers. The layout and bezel matches the VDO "Cockpit" series of gauges still available from VDO dealers (see dash photo).
