Title: Pank dragster-revival
Post by: Frallan on January 22, 2014, 21:45:38 pm
Finally it is happening.
I now live in the same country as this dragster.
I have collected parts for many years to get it running again.
Original engine from 1978.
This time with a Autorotor to bump up the noise factor.
090 bus automatic transmission.

To begin with, pictures will tell the rest of the story for now.

Edit: I will fix the size problem but not tonight. Sorry.

No SCC
At the best I will have the car running by end of season August/September.
Then it will only be local south Sweden strip testing on Malmö Raceway.
2015....that is not impossible.

Here is the transmission.

Return of the sub 300 kg. "Pank",-Definitely cool !! What nozzle size did Gösta Grubb at "Onaneramera" use on his "spraying device" ?  ;D

E.T.: 6.71 on 1/8 mile (street tyres) at Bug-Run back then ?

Regards from Griebel

Post by: Frallan on January 25, 2014, 18:47:46 pm
Griebel, you got your records right.
Now sub 300 kg will be more like close to 400 kg but double hp.
I think it might be something like 380-400 hp.

It will be a wide dragster. Maybe a bit wider than before but this time 10,5" slicks.
I love my Strange axles. A good feeling to know this part will not give trouble.
40 splines and gun drilled.

Best ET in 1980 was 10.14 and 208 km/h.
372 kg with me in it.
175 hp.
D/D record holder 78-79-80
10.27 and 204 km/h in 1979

Now it should be a bit quciker, but just for the fun feeling.

A good friend of mine retired (apparently!  :D) decades ago. He now runs his shop when he feels like it, just a small shed full of old equipment tucked away, still very much in demand by the hotrod crowd (he can still hand cut and bend louvres in bonnets, among other work.........). He's 83.
When he was 77, after 50 years of trying, he finally took his hand-made 32 Coupe to win THE big meet here. He built everything on the car before I was born, and I'm now almost 50. A bigger, nastier engine would go in every few years, and when he took the big trophy a few years ago he was running a 468ci alloy-head motor into the low-8s. This car, still in low-8s spec, is what he now drives through the local traffic to work in his shed............
Coolest read-deal hotrodder in the world I rekn!  ;D

Today I picked up my new front wheels.
Sent my 36 year old Avon Speedmasters to Jon Hansen in California.
They will be used on a nostalgia exhibition front engine dragster. Museum, not running.
In return he sent me these new tires and a stage disc. Thanks Jon!

Two very cool drawings I found.
Original drawing 1977.
Then the three wing front design that we built but never used. Pretty innovative to be 1978. I think.

Not a lot happened since spring on the dragster...but now with my beetle running again, basic clean up in the workshop, inverter heating going in, new fluoroescent electrical wiring soon (not like today with extension cords :-) ) , the dragster is in focus again.
Just got my S60 wiring loom from Martin at MEF.
Very professional! Thanks!

As I used to be professional wire loom maker (building three seater planes..... and not with extension cords) I had the initial idea to do my own loom but then changed my mind and invested in this one. I do not regret it.

For the sharp eyed you can also see a TIV trubo on the stand. So no, I have not changed personality, I keep on having few too many projects in the air at the same time, but that is just me.

Nope....in fact I see that I wrote "trubo"...... :)

But yes, it originates as a Whipple SC engine way back when I lived in Poland and then turbo and now when I am living in the same place without traveling, it is time to do something about it.
Look, I posted a little bit about it on this forum before.

For sure...... but under  the title Pank II.
I bought a VW turbo dragster from USA. Raced it and now it is ready to race again..... no turbo, a large Whipple screwcharger.
