Anyone else here drive a water cooled VW (as a second car, of course)?  Got to say we've truely enjoyed our '99 Passat GLX V6...over 208,000 miles worth with hardly a hicup.  The car is on Eibach springs and Bilstien Sport shocks with the optional sport 29mm front sway bar from VW.  Tires are Michelin Pilot Exalta's 205/55 16's. 

Was that second picture taken in Tustin on Walnut Ave.? Looks familliar.

I bought this 86 GTI, with 8 valve 1.8, two years ago while I was building the motor for my beetle. It needed a little work when I bought it, but after those things were taken care of I've had no problems. It gets great gas mileage, awesome handling, and is great for beach and fishing trips.

Yep... Drive was good. I'll tell ya the whole story after I get back. On my lap top in the hotel right now.

Nice GTI, Mike!  Seeing that engine reminded me of years ago cruising in Darrell Vittone's Diesel Rabbit Pick-Up.  An ugly white piece of shit with the diesel logo on the back, it had a very strong 16 valve motor mated to a close ratio five speed under the hood.  Darrell liked to get on the freeway slow...get in front of some impacient ass hole and, well you can probably guess the rest... ;D 8)

Thanks, Sarge!  A 16v swap into a Rabbit is a terrific combination.  That car was my very first Volkswagen of my own, I've had it since 1994.  Of course, it was a stocker GTI then.  Cruising around with Darrel V. is cool; in addition to his Empi history, I would also call him a hero to waterpumper fans having started Techtonics Tuning.  I only use TT's exhausts on my cars!

I feel fortunate to have spent time with DV back in the early 70's.  I was selling parts at a Porsche dealership in Riverside and Darrell used to come by for stuff for his 72 911-S.  You want to talk E-ticket rides, that Porsche was it!  The 2.4 was set up with high compression 92's (making it 2800cc's, I believe) and the trans had very close ratio (airport) gears...perfect for hot-lapping Lake Matthews at lunch time  8) !!  We still talk...maybe one of these days we'll get him to chime in here.  Your right about Techtonics, too...all nice stuff.

The big truck just dumped a load of new R32's out in the parking lot this morning...pretty nice piece! 

I've got a manky 5-door Mk3 Golf Driver with a knackered engine as my daily. 1.8 litres of pure boredom, rattles, smoke and water leaks. I don't trust it to get to the end of the road, let alone to a race meet or VW show. Every mile counts! :D
I recently bought another one (a GL or CL I think) in the same colour for £100, pirated the front doors (electric windows and mirrors), the GTI style colour coded bumpers, the towbar and the good motor, and weighed the rest in for scrap - got £73 back from the scrap man! Then weighed the catalytic converter in with another scrap metal man and got another £15, so all those bits to improve mine cost me £12! Bargain! Just got to find the time to swap the engine over - mine is well on borrowed time... :o ;D

Funny to see that the most of you drive a Volkswagen  :D

My Dad's Audi A6 2.5 turbo diesel had about 170k on it - it's nearly run in now... :D

Well I got the swap all done, everything in and running, and gues what - the clutch cable adjuster won't adjust, so the car is still sat in my garage and girlfriend is not happy! Just need to get a new cable now and everything should be cool! ::)

This car oozes evil. Everything it comes into contact with breaks! Since I started work on it my beetle has developed a misfire and a squeal from the front brakes (all just rebuilt the week before) and a lunatic in an MPV wiped the drivers front wing off it, and I can't fix anything because I've pulled a muscle in my back! Aaaargh! >:(

Looks nice with the GTi bumpers, clear indicators and smoked rear lights tho...  :D

It's finally landed in the UK  ;D

They want to deliver it to me week after next, but I'm in Egypt then  ::)

The new Audi S5 arrived at the dealership the other day...what a car!!  The red R32 belongs to Mark Thurber's son who is serving time with the Army in Afganistan...lot's of go-fast stuff on board here... 8) :o

One bad-ass ride...Only $60K, too!  The draw-back is gas milage...14 city / 21 highway.  The engine is 4.2 liter V-8 with 354 hp mated to a 6 speed stick shift trans.  8) 8)

Both my kids have water pumpers... My daughter drives a 2000 Jetta 2.0 and my son has a 2000 Passat 1.8 turbo. Have you ever changed the oil filter on a Passat? What the Hell ??

Ha ha!  Only a true european would notice that!  Good eye.  My GTI started out as a 1983 US-Spec Rabbit GTI, which had completely different dash board and tail lights.  I didn't connect the year difference in the small tail lights and the later dashboard until after I did the work.  Yes, for it to be more correct I should have the larger european tail lights.  If I were ever to redo the car again I would fix that, but its pretty unlikely I will ever do that.

My wife has a 2001 Audi A4 1.8 turbo, real close to a Passat.  Those filters make a damn big mess, don't they?  I put a page of newspaper on the subframe to try and help.

On mine the 1.5L D engine is dead so I picked up a GTD mk1 and I will put the 1.6L turbo diesel engine with the 5-speed gearbox. I don't know if the GTD rabbit was sold in the US.

The GTD have the same specs as the GTI with a turbo diesel engine, maybe the gearbox is different but I'm not sure.

The daily driver... '02 TDI GL Wagon (Variant ;)) Re-mapped, larger injectors, PLENTY of power, 40+mpg (driven hard). The car sees about 160 miles per day. My first TDI, but not my last...

Nice one, Ian!  Back in the old days, Okrassa / Oettinger stuff was sold through a place called Powerhaus here in the states.  The guy who did the selling was a guy named George Ferch who, to this day, is a loyal Commonwealth VW customer.  George still drives his Oettinger equipped Rabbit in once in a while... always gets a crowd on the service drive! 8) 8) 8)

Can't remember if I posted this before (CRS Syndrome....can'tremembershit), but here's the old 73 Datsun truck.  The motor was a 1600 with Badger high compression pistons, Fumio ported head, Racer Brown cam and springs, dual Mikuni Solex carbs, 2000 Roadster clutch and flywheel and Datsun Competition SSS headers.  After a good sorting out, the thing hauled ass.... until it was stolen one day and never seen again. :'( :'(

California Camaros used to cruise out to Colorado Bl, uncork their very "built" V-8's, cruise the Bl. and drive 'em home that way... Nothing quite like the sound of a bunch of open header cars going through a tunnel at freeway speeds! :o

I also think that was the best lookin mini truck made.  My high school buddy was in west side truckers, I used to hang out with them alot back in the late 70's.

After the first chapter of DKP closed and we sold our cars, some of us got into riding dirt bikes.  Ron Fleming, Greg Aronson, Mike Mahaffey, Mark Thurder and I all took that route.  We'd ride most weekends at Saddleback Motorcycle Park, Escape Country or Claude Ostein Park.  That meant having to get something to haul bikes in.  Ron bought a '72 Datsun and, when the '73's came out with the new rounded body style, I knew that's what I had to have.  I was totally blind when I bought that truck... I'm 6'2" tall and after a few months of smacking my head on the roof, realized I'd made a "small" mistake.  Those trucks were WAY oversprung in back, so I pulled the load leaf out and added a 3" set of lowering blocks to soften things up a bit.... MUCH better.  I had Brad's Upholstery re-do the seat which helped a bit with the head room.  After ripping a belt loop off a couple of pairs of Levi Cords while gassing up, I had all the bed tie-downs shaved as well as the logos on the front fenders.  The tail light surrounds were painted white and the tailgate bump stops removed.  The tube bumper was big back then... I liked the Gasser style look and had mine chromed.  Unfortunatly, compared to Ron's '72, the '73 proved to be quite a sled.  I was working in Riverside at the time and found a guy who knew his shit with Datsuns.  He recommended a 3" exhaust with a "turbo" (read Flowmaster) muffler as well as taking a 1" chassis punch and adding a dozen holes to the back side of the air filter housing to get more air to the engine.  The biggest improvement, though, was getting the souped up 510 motor from Darrell Vittone... that was the shit! 8) 8) 8)

Nice car Mark, love those wheels. I have had 2 stationwagons and 3 sedans of the 240 in the 80-90's, but the wagons are my alltime favs. Especally the GLT/Turbo. But they seems to be more or less rusted away here now. Hade lots of acessories for them but all is gone now, except some catalogs. If you wish i could send you one Swedish acessoriecatalog from 1994? Almost unread ;D.
