Title: My New Race Car - NO MERCY and No Money.....
Post by: Russell on February 08, 2015, 13:30:18 pm
So over the last year or so plenty work has being going on in the background to get No Mercy back on the track, however, it needed to be modern, quick "Very quick", in fact hopefully faster than the rest of you......  ;D

SO with a new chassis rated at 6.5sec.... The car is almost finished apart from the power plant and ancillary's, I have stuck with the old style 4 link but beefed it up from 250bhp to 1000bhp, I am delighted with Cotsweld Race Cars work on the chassis and my Race Car Advisor, Richie Webb.

So here's a few snaps to keep you entertained. I'm thinking VW FASTER Garage....

Seen it in the flesh last time at Jim's and I can say pictures don't do it justice!!!! The quality of the built is really jaw dropping.
Will need more space at the track and a bigger crew now ;D ;D ;D

Wow, I knew it had gone to Jims for some work but I didn't expect a new chassis! Wasn't the old one up to spec? I seem to remember Jon Webster updating it when he worked at Hausers. I can't wait to see it now - first time I saw it was when it was silver and owned by the Dutch guy who's name escapes me. KS had the Goss car when I started going to events. Looks fantastic anyway - knew you couldn't go totally vintage!

Old chassis was er.... Old, bent and way too slow...

I'm actually quite far behind as we have been waiting for the engine to be finished but unfortunately the new heads seemed to take for ever I actually think VW paradise/Paradise motor sport were on a go slow. I'm sure they are worried that us Europeans may well run quicker than them this year, would be ace to see the fastest two VWs on this side of the pond and then we can have a UK/ USA shootout....

Richie "vert" vrs Kris laufer "hater mater"

No Mercy vrs Red Barron

And the once all that is done we can have the square vrs the notch.....

Nothing like dreams........😁

This was the car that gave me the bug for wanting drag racing VW's back in the early 90's.
Watching it launch against one of its many battles with Turbolance from the shed at the pod was awe inspiring for me.
Fantastic to see it being reincarnated in a more vicious format which will bring many a smile to us VW nutters.
Great looking work to all involved!
I may even get a chance to run up with it one day  ;)

Dreaming is at least free for the time being  :)

You should have used a certain almost-blind-engine builder instead  :)

Cool project and I like your plans. Go fast og go home. Can I ask what he have used on the chassi welds?

Keep on with good work.

Does anybody know, which engines this car has have before. I have one A-RPM engine (78x101,4), which should be one of this car's previous engines?

Cheers

As far as I know it never had a 4inch bore engine, only 94mm bore, but it had several owners after Keith and could have had that in it when in Europe

cheers Richie

It might have - when I sold it to Frank van Berkohm (sp?) I sourced a Pro-Stock motor from the USA for him. That engine was, I believe, an ARPM motor which, coincidentally, originally powered the car that Udo Beck now has...

I know when Lee Darby had it he used a big cc type 4 motor, around 2.6 litres IIRC.

Keith is right that this car had the ARPM engine when it was with Frank in Belgium. My friend Peter Bennett bought the engine from him and then I bought it from Peter and now it is with Jukka.

So watching my mate Kev D get his 55 on the track, made me think about posting an update, it may not look like a lot has been done, but it has, a couple of items to finish with Jim and some paintwork on the rear wings and rear wing and engine back in and we should be ready to stretch its legs, hoping to have it out this year so next year i can have a proper crack with it.

sorry for delay in updating, but work sort got in the way....

enjoy Russell

Car looks great.

We are thinking of using remote control ;) With Russell inside for the ride :)

Car is about 80-85% is done, I am putting engine together at moment, I have to wire all EFI etc and finish some plumbing once it is all in place, then back to Jim @ Cotsweld to set up chassis/corner weight and alignment etc and that's pretty much it
We did take a couple of steps back last year after some failures on my car showed us some weak points on this build, main one being this had VW size stub axles still using the original hubs from when it was 1st built, after I broke one of mine at Euro finals that are about 50% bigger O.D. & not 25 years old :o we decided we couldn't risk the VW size so Jim had to make all new hubs using same size stub axle & bearing carrier I have, this then led to new brakes, shock position needed moving etc etc, always one thing leads to several others so consumed a lot of time.

Looks like it will have a better starting point with less failure though so probably well worth the effort.

Not for this year, we will just focus on getting it all to work and then if we are happy with everything it can come apart to paint frame etc, there is always a few things that need moving/changing or made to work better when you actually race it so better to do them before that

Little update:
This week I got some time so I finished engine up, fitted all the header tubes/turbo/exhaust/wastegate and intake back into car, then engine in, had some minor issues with clutch clearance as car doesn't have motor plate so everything sits in different place in bellhousing, bit of head scratching while I figured it all out but sorted that now with some parts juggling :).
Next I finished up all the fuel/oil/brakes & clutch plumbing and have today bleed clutch and brakes, even got oil in the dry sump tank now and primed it through to pump, waiting on one fitting and fuel system will be finished :o
A few things are pretty close now so I put all bodywork & mounts/chute/wheelie bar back on to see if it all clears, 2 fittings are touching chute/wheelie bar top mount on top of case so I have to move them a little but everything else is good 8)

Next is the ECU and wiring  :o I have started by mounting all the sensors etc , next is actual dash

cheers Richie

Back on it over weekend, I wasn't happy with brakes, rear pads weren't staying on discs so creating a spongy feel on pedal on 1st push, not what you want in a car like this  :o so I added a 2psi residual valve in front of staging brake and then bled them again, this cured problem and now has a good firm pedal  :)
So onto wiring, I mounted dash/ecu and lambda controller in dash then started laying out wiring, measuring out where control boxes go and now I am slowly sorting through the mass of wires & getting correct wires to relevant place , once that is done I can fit ends and seal up loom. Sounds so simple like that :D

Gauges were in dash already from before we decided to go with Fuel tech ECU/Dash also I like a mechanical gauge as backup just in case a sensor fails, always have go-pro aimed at them in cabrio just to be sure :)

cheers Richie

Well car is all wired, cranks over, got oil pressure but much to cold here to start it on methanol, so next it goes back to Jim for windows and final set up  8)

cheers Richie

Big step forward today, I had finished up a bunch of small jobs after getting car back from Jim@cotsweld last week and finished up all the Fuel tech FT600 wiring and so it was time for 1st start up  :o 8) ;D ,

Car is now 99% done, so I will do some base some tuning and then it will be ready for testing at track 8)

Video of start up, I set it safe and rich to begin with and it started up straight away once I had everything talking to each other correctly

So, I know I'm a little early but sometimes its good to just say it.....

I want to publically say a massive thank you to Richie for his hard work and guidance with this project, yes its been easy for me to sit back and spend some money, however his efforts and the support of Jim at Cotsweld and Basti and a few more have made this possible.

I remember back about 1993 Volksworld did a pewter model of No Mercy and I always wanted that model, I was too late too order as I worked offshore and have looked for one for years, however when the chance to get the real think came up, it was like a dream...

So maybe this weekend will be the reality of it all... Sure hope so, Until then RICHIE thank you.

Russell

Yes I think its all good now, still some tuning needed as its super rich but that's not to much of a problem with methanol, I did a little test a week ago and it made 7lbs boost on spring only which will be our starting point and go from there with CO2 once Russell is happy with it.

Would you bring your car?

DDD? maybe ;)

Bit of an odd question but did those egt probes in the pic come with the 90 degree bend in them ? As mine are just straight.

Hi,

I saw this car at DDD. Very nice!
Unfortunately it was very hard to tune it the right way to make a good burnout/race.
I'm looking forward to see it race, and i'm sure you guys can find the right settings to do so!

Best regards,

Peter
