And by the way: nice cars...

I've always believed that Jim Moore's Notch was the quintessential Cal Look T3 for the era.  Clean, well built and fast.  Darrell Baker's Squareback was another personal favorite of mine.  Fabian, can you help me with the pictures?  Thanks.

The graphic type 3 is currently for sale on ebay. A real 80's cal look. I love it:

Wow, that would be a great car to update with fresh paint and interior.....but it would be a shame to sand down such a great graphics job.  Its one of those cars that would be cool to have, yet you would be embarrased to show anyone you had it!  ;D

Now that black panel window square and the blue chopped car would be easy to bring up to date.  Makes you wonder where all thee cool cars went.  :-\

Fabian, that graphic`d square has been with that dealer for a while now - I enquired about it 2-3 years ago!
I`d have it in a second!

Can`t talk about 80`s T3`s without adding a pic of the orange grail...KS`s former baby which is now sitting in my garage - debut due for EBI 2 :o

There was a kid (weren't we all) in El Monte named Nicky who had an early Notchback.  1984 or 1985...........REALLY red with a 2180 built at B & B German Auto (Jim Behrens and Dave Barnes).  Fast car with a lot of street cred in the valley.  He would race just about anybody.  Never made it to a magazine, that I recall, but a real clean car.  I'll try to dig up a picture..........

Then there was a Turbo Notch in Velvet Green that attended the Type 3 Day events.......had four lug Mahles and was pretty clean as well.  Never saw that one have a go, though.

Let's not forget Danny Gabbard's car either.  Right there alongside Jim Moore's for quality.

Well, I set outto the event - Surrey Street Rodders' Wheels day – in the Fastback and got a few miles down the road when i smelt petrol. Stopped to find one fo the fuel lines weeping like crazy. Headed to Autocavan (I had a key for the workshop) and changed the hose before carrying on to the event. It still had the automatic trans, then, as well. VERY early photo. Thanks for the link. I think I'll be spending some money on their DVDs!  :)

Could this one also be classified under the 80'ies type 3?
This one was built in de US and was powered by a flat 6 Porsche engine and gearbox on solid mounts. It featured some customs tricks.
In the mid nineties the car came to Belgium and was purchased by Koen from a Begium vW shop Geko tuning. Porsche engine and gearbox were removed and a strong type 1 powerplant and gearbox was fitted. In this lay out the car was featured in Super VW magazine.
Later on, when GEKO stopped its activities, my friend Pascal bought the car from Koen, drove it like that for a little and started the rebuild with new paintjob.
About one year ago Pascal sold the car back on the Steve from Steve's VW shop.
First pictures was a Pascal bought it and the second was after the respray in Champagne together with my 65 1500S.

If anyone has more info about who had built this notch over in the states, I would be happy to hear it.

Hi Nicolas,
No, I didn't make it to the T3D this year unfortunately, but I know who you mean though. Sounds like you met a guy called Danny Lord. He has photo albums of Fastbacks, Notches and Variant/Squarebacks stretching back over the years.   :)

Yeah, he has them separated out for each model.  :) They look similar as they are just old school 35mm prints.  :)

That red square is one of my fave 80`s cars ever!
I`ve also got a pic I took standing in almost the same spot that one was taken - spooky...
Its now mat black with a red `flake roof, its been passed around a few owners in the past couple of years & is back up for sale now.I really thought about buying it, but with 3 projects already its just not going to happen!

hey could you send me some detail pictures of the front turnsignals? i will change the lights eventually to lucas round type for an better balance between the front and back. the back doesn't have the reflectors and the front will look a bit too 'full' with full bumpers and the lights imho. but it seems to be harder to find a good location of the blinkers as the front curves differently as opposed to a beetle.

thanks allready

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think those are two different set sets of wheels. In the color picture it looks like they are 14's (at least in the front). Danny?

It always had late 6s on it and one day borded I stripped the paint off the wheels after joni talked me into it. Joni my xwife. when I first built the car it had 2 liter alloys on it , before I got into DKK. Here are some pictures of it , Just after clipping it and when first built.

Dave.. I remember that Guy/car. When was in high school that guy would cruise Whittier Blvd in Montebello/Pico.  Car sounded meaner than anyhing i ever heard at the time.

First of all: The topic is "80s cal look type 3", isn't it? So please STICK WITH IT!

@Sander: When Fabian started this thread I thought about that very car. "Red Religion", as it was named by the owner Leon van Laarhoven, was a milestone car in the european VW scene for sure.
At that time there weren't too many modified Type 3s and Leon's car has won numerous shows like VW Euro (NL), Super VW Nationals (F), Bug Jam (GB) and VW Forum (GER). It was also featured in VW Scene and in Volksworld.

I wondered what might have happened to it and then, last weekend, I saw it again. It was displayed at the Kever Winter Festjin in Holland last weekend and I had the possibility to talk to Leon. It was a nice trip down memory lane.

I also remember that Red notch, We were going to street race one night. He had a little blonde girl friend, that she was so proud off. the car.  I asked her who was the owner of the car. ( Tall blonde kid ) She said that my boyfriends car.. :D I told him okay, lets line up.
But he wanted to see my motor first.  Just as I pointed out my car. some knuckle head kid jumped out back of a truck with a rifle. and all Hell broke lose. :o :o  We split the area, never to return. There was a mutual friend of ours named Wolfer ( Wolf Towing Co )  he tried to get us to re-raced but never happen?

What a story Art!   Yeah, Nicky wrote more than a few checks to B & B.........or his mom did.  I think she thought it was cheaper than rehab.

I have a hangar at a local airport right across from Jim Behrens, who built Nicky's engine and trans.  I see him quite often.  He's still portin' and buildin', just mostly for the sand crowd.  I'll ask what Nicky's Notch had inside the case........

Rifle.  Wow.  Where was that?

The Ralphs on Valley?  The San Gabriel Valley was his haunt.  I went to his house a few times trading parts.  Each time he was cleaning it.  Never saw him wrench on it, though.  I never saw the car at New York, one of the unofficial dragstrips here, but I did see him a number of times at Burger King on Live Oak and Santa Anita.  That's where the real deal showed up, many times on trailers.  Cash was king.

that would be very kind of you to do that. i am almost certain they are not 165's so 185/65 or 185/70 is an option as well. if you can ask him, it could help in a later decision for new tyres

Okay, now that everybody's stained their favorite blue dress over Gab's, Geno's, and Galassi's car...

This car resurfaced Spring '10 on Craigslist for I think $1,800. My pal Rob Mellinger bought it. It's still intact but a bit worse for wear. He's a historian so it'll go back the way he remembered it when he lusted for it. And yes, it's still in the pacific northwet (Tacoma now).

As for picture windows, no square was cool in the '80s unless it had 'em.

in the 80 there's a lot of big square side windows(one piece window)   why????  and  some square back were top chopped  those were cool  nice look

'80s Type 3 rides? Damn, this place just gets better and better!
My '73 Square I had in the early/mid 80s was Honey Brown, gold 5-slot mags with a matching gold "Z" 80s-swishy-thingy down each side, polished teak rails on the roof between chrome rails, too-loud 2" hotdog. From memory that thing was damn cool back then. I lost count of the tickets that car earned me! Hahaha! Wish I had photos.

Best of luck with your Square mate, looking good.

In my mind, the most 80's-lookin' Type 3, besides the "Suicidal Tendencies" Square, is this hot pink targa-roof Fasty that I thought was pretty ugly, but it did garnish a lot of attention in its day...
