Title: '70 cal look project
Post by: Gwar72 on March 21, 2016, 15:04:18 pm
Well where do I start. Been into VW's for the last 6 years and I have a always fancied doing a Cal Look project (sharing a unit with one beauty for 4 years) So a mate was selling a 1970 1300 beetle which was in my price range and look like the perfect starting block.

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/IMG_4181_zpsoah2mkbp.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/IMG_4181_zpsoah2mkbp.jpg.html)

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/IMG_4180_zpsdyhhdcqn.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/IMG_4180_zpsdyhhdcqn.jpg.html)

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/IMG_4187_zps4ta3webl.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/IMG_4187_zps4ta3webl.jpg.html)

So I knew that I had some welding to do (heater channels) but after stripping her apart I knew that the was more to be done. So the decision was made to do it once and do it properly (well as properly as I could manage myself)  ;)

So started to strip down the interior so I could get to see more of the body and floor...

Passengers (Left) side foot well

A post

Heater channel toast..!!  ::)

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/WP_20160227_16_07_52_Pro_zpswr5n1ocm.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/WP_20160227_16_07_52_Pro_zpswr5n1ocm.jpg.html)

So I could see that it would be a full heater channel panel needed so I started to brace it up before going any further..!!  ;)

Door off which was a swine @#*...!! Had to use an impact screw driver to loosen and then to drill out lower inner A post screw as that was rusted in..

These picture were taken over the last few months and more to follow (playing catch up on loading) so more to follow if you want..!!??  ;) :D :)

Keep going. What's the overall look going to be? Big or small motor?

I hope you return to the original 1970 style !

Good choice on inspiration! As you've probably noticed, we're not embarrassed by late models here, in fact quite the opposite! I'd go back to late panels but 1200-spec ones, just to be a little closer to Stoo's car. Use the same colour, the Lucas L488 indicators and the same lack of un-necessary chrome, just on a later car. Wheels are where it gets tricky - you need something a bit obscure but cool. Rivieras? Cosmics? Keep it 4 bolt!

Cheers  :) Yeah Stoo's car is ace but inspiration only not colour. My bug looks like it's Chinchilla grey on the dash so thinking of going along that colour route  ;)

So started to attack the heater channel/floor bolts. Some came straight out but others just spun round in the rotten channel so had to cut holes and angle cut bolts out...

Well had a look at the Hooky's A pillar repair post (which looks top quality) and using the alignment tool (works a treat) I mocked up how it would go...

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/WP_20160327_16_47_43_Pro_zps7hrmzicl.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/WP_20160327_16_47_43_Pro_zps7hrmzicl.jpg.html)

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/WP_20160327_16_48_01_Pro_zpstx9lk2uv.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/WP_20160327_16_48_01_Pro_zpstx9lk2uv.jpg.html)

Then cut out the rot....

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/WP_20160327_18_57_31_Pro_zpsvfklivkj.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/WP_20160327_18_57_31_Pro_zpsvfklivkj.jpg.html)

And trial fit again...

Just want to see how it went it, got a bit low cutting stuff out so wanted to see how it would look with something in place (if only as a mock)..!!??  :) :)

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/WP_20160327_16_48_24_Pro_zpstue758za.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/WP_20160327_16_48_24_Pro_zpstue758za.jpg.html)

So then went back to cutting out the rot on the rear cross member....

Looks like the VW Mexico part that I fitted to my car many years ago. Not strictly correct for a 60s beetle but fits so much better than the repro. The threaded studs are for a push fit clip that holds wiring in place - quite common on New cars. Whip them off with the grinder!

I was lucky to find an other verry good body
With almost no welding needed
But that was 20 years ago
You don t find them so easy annymore these days

Good luck with the build.

Finally managed some time up the unit since April..!!  ::) ::)

Scraped off the wax oil off the outer front wheel arches to see how it looked underneath. Not to bad so a little vertical patching strip where the bulkhead spot welds to on both arches and then start to look at some local media cleaning and priming before bulkhead goes in.

Media blasted lip to where bulkhead spot welds up under so not trapping any rust and then sprayed weld trough primer. Then started to weld in new metal into inner front arch to where bulkhead sides will spot weld to but then ran out of gas..!!  ::)  (pic to follow)  :)

I was going to weld up the front quarters but as there was so much to repair like wing nut mounts, lips etc so decided to replace whole panel...

Sensible move - if they need more than the bumper mount and lower repair its not worth fixing them. Get the genuine quarters tho - the repro ones aren't worth bothering with.

Seriously, spend the money. On my car we used one genuine and one repro. Eventually we gave up with the repro after trimming one piece and extending another, hammering it to fit where it didn't meet the original tank support or new genuine bulkhead. We cut it back off and bought another genuine one. On a late car VW Mexico stuff lines up and saves so much time and hassle.

Finally new metal going on..!!!  ;D 8)

Hooky's A pillar Panel going in, used the hooky's fitment collar to set and then tack welded in place. Then removed and tried door on for alignment, Fitted perfectly apart from bottom b pillar but the rear left quarter was hit at some point (will be replacing this panel) so happy with fit. will weld up A pillar tomorrow fully front and back ;) ;D

Nice work 8)
Been there done that... Agree with Neil about genuine panels though, you'll end up with a far better shell using genuine parts.
I've fitted loads of them & it's been worth it every time!
Cheers

CSP are a good source if the normal suspects in the UK can't help.

Well did a bit more yesterday  ;) :)

Rear inner part of the body frame on the left rear is in bad shape. Going to replace outer quarter so thought I'd start here behind on the support frame so I could the then weld onto heater channel.

The rot to come out...

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/IMG_20170228_140732_zpsplfgrndw.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/IMG_20170228_140732_zpsplfgrndw.jpg.html)

The donor vehicle, going to use several parts areas from this.... ;)

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/IMG_20170228_114139_zps8zlgnutd.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/IMG_20170228_114139_zps8zlgnutd.jpg.html)

Area cut out, the part I wanted was Ok. Outer quarter on this donor is too bad to use though so going for OG nos on that  ;)

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/IMG_20170228_122817_zpsvuv8gy8k.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/IMG_20170228_122817_zpsvuv8gy8k.jpg.html)

Cut off excess metal, drilled out spot welds where I could to make a neater job

Cut out rot area on my beetle  :o ;D :)

But decided to replace lip on one area first..

New metal on..

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/IMG_20170228_161622_zpsfco3lmld.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/IMG_20170228_161622_zpsfco3lmld.jpg.html)

Trimmed..

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/IMG_20170228_162209_zpsz04goilb.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/IMG_20170228_162209_zpsz04goilb.jpg.html)

And then clamped in place. Have got excess overhang on both donor piece and original as I will cut through with saw to get a good cut line match. But that will be next weeks job...

(http://i1053.photobucket.com/albums/s462/Pip72/IMG_20170228_165128_zpsckjr8pqw.jpg) (http://s1053.photobucket.com/user/Pip72/media/IMG_20170228_165128_zpsckjr8pqw.jpg.html)

Once cut will clean up donor panel part before tacking and welding in...  ;) :)

That's all for now  ;)

Strut cut ;)

Isn't it sickening when the donor car is better than the one you're repairing! Been there, done that! I haven't forgotten about bumper mount pics - now I can actually get to the wheel well!

Here's a factory welded seam on those A pillars
(http://i.imgur.com/vL60ko4.jpg)

I took a look at my '70 in order to verify for ya . . . My lower "hinge pillar" DOES have a solid weld bead from the edge under the door all the way to about that carpet nail hole!

Did a little bit more ready for the Hooky's replacement A pillar to go in. I want to cut it so the inner part of the hookys panel lines up better than I did on the other side. So thought I'd cut some of the front lower quarter off to get better access and see what bodges were done for wing bolt fixes..!!  ??? ::) ;D
