Title: Where did you take your aircooled VW this week?
Post by: richie on July 06, 2016, 12:23:59 pm
I was thinking while working on my car, its summer and there are lots of shows, races, club meets, local pub meets, cruise nights etc etc  and lots of us must be taking our aircooled VWs out and enjoying them now summer is here, I know this is cal look lounge but most of us enjoy seeing Aircooled VWs being used and enjoyed as intended so even if its a stocker or vintage performance, whatever let us know about as long as its not a rusty dragging along the ground dangerous piece of sh*t   ;)

So come on tell us where you took your car, if you got pictures even better and if was a non VW meet what other cool stuff was there?

Might as well keep this thread the same as "What did you get in the mail today" etc etc.

Didn't take my Beetle but I went to the Le Mans Classic last weekend. Nice cars all round as usual and the best weather so far this year. Loads of old aircooled Porsches and some nice Bugs, Buses and Ghias.

I and two friends went to "Drag Nite " in South Carolina for the event. My friend and brother John Toomey ran a personal best with a 6.41 1/8th in his 2050 lb car( 1.20 on video, yellow bug racing dragster) . I unfortunately got too greedy on my tune up and cracked a cylinder . The event was fantastic and we had alot of fun , met some new friends and visited with old ones. Mike McCarthy

pretty good for us to drive, a bit less for the organisation.
because of the bad weather only a car of 10showed up, this meant we could do a run come back to the start and do a other one directly. We did like 20-25 runs in one afternoom!
track condition was bad due to the rain, but we had fun and where able to go al to the end of the track (1mile) because they didn't closed it in the middle.

That cab is very nice Russell - tell us more!

I drove my Beetle last weekend too. It went up the drive, reversed onto the front garden while I moved some stuff in the garage, then one of the 145s burst so I put it back on the drive to sit for another three years.

A bit late with this, but a few weeks ago I took my VW down to Leeds for VW Festival. It was about a 120 mile round trip which had me a bit nervous as the engine had only been in 2 weeks. However it all worked out well, bar a little bit of oil out the breather lines. This turned into a good excuse to fit some stainless steel rocker covers with JIC fittings :).

I came away with 2nd best Air-Cooled at VW Festival.

DDD in Bitburg for me too, around 500km one way trip. Weekend was a blast and the 3.88 R&P really makes a lot of fun at the autobahn. For next year on the to do list is a radio.
Good to read nicolas that you arrived safe at home, the engine sounded real awfull....

Harv hooked up the trailer and dragged the Ned bug to DDD for the weekend. Saturday had a foggy start which burnt off by 11 and Sunday soon dried out by 10am after some heavy overnight rain.

A great weekend with more than its share of laughter and great company. A special thanks to Mike and Fred and their club for putting on a great show and looking after us.

The track really suited Harvey and Ned with a string of passes on or around his pb followed by a new pb of 11.75 on some slicks that are now truly passed their sell by date.

See you all next year for sure.

i am pulling the engine today and tomorrow it will be on the stand. i was a bit heartbroken because i ran it quite a bit this summer and even MOT was without a problem, so when i first had to change the external cooler and then cope with the rattle i was pissed to say the least. i had all my racing gear with me… but i am glad i just went and was able to take my fastback to DDD, it has been years since i took it.

@felix thanks for your concern, car looked great as always!

@Richie, no pictures from my part, i was too busy holding my beer and burger.  :P

Still not been to the Retro Show allthough it surely looks good. My kind of cars there.
That coach is a Bedford OB I will tell you (and I would wouldn´t I :-)  )
It was for sale for ages, something like 120k.
But has a very posh interior. Did you look inside?
Nice Hillman Avenger and Datsun Wagon.

It used to belong to Peter Christie, had fake BRMs on then, he sold it to Kev D and I bought it from him about 5 years ago.

When we got it we swapped it out to Porsche pattern brakes, fitted some drop spindles & a new beam as it was not good, then fitted koni red shocks all round and a few other little mods Richie does to improve cars like this.

I built the 2276 IDA engine myself for my previous 71 "late looker " and kept it when I sold that to go into this, cogbox built me a close 1st to 3rd ratio box with stock 4th. that's about it

Here's the link to the '71 build, the engine info is here.

At Saturday I made two test runs ever with my "new" drag beetle. Last run were 11,137s / 191,90kmh. I'm happy!  :) I think that there is more to come..

I think that it's about 10 years when this bug were at strip last time. With some different technics. Maybe somebody recognize this bug..[attachment=1]

Went to the breakfast club at Shelsley Walsh hill climb this morning. There were lots of different cars there, Ferrari 512, Lotus Elan, a couple of Peugeot 205 Gti's, various Westfield and Caterhams, lots of Morgan's etc.
Good cooked breakfast, beautiful scenery and an interesting variety of machinery.

Local dinner was having a Christmas Eve classic car meet, so we took the opportunity to give the red cabrio a run out and let our new dog Max (that we just adopted from a rescue centre) enjoy the wind in his face and meet some new people.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171224/95ec8323c68b26bb9d7e2e2b07028937.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171224/5ea2e8ba18451666283e1454b5e8186f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171224/1e2e140ac141880d28488e51f96aa3df.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171224/3893083059a7c3c9fcd2b45cb5ee4625.jpg)

I took my car to the London museum of steam and water to the steam and gasoline show. It’s a small show put on by Neil Melliard of Pro Sign and Neil Brown. Plenty of cool cars and you can also have a look at the museum.  Not a vw I know, but it is aircooled and more cal look than a trike

After demolishing the current garage (asbestos sheet/wood frame) at the Crofts house last weekend I needed a new temporary storage solution for the 63.
Harvey (Nedbug) has kindly offered a bit of storage so made the 40 mile trip today. Great fun

It drives nice, can’t really tell the difference as I never had a problem with swing axle.  I’m driving it longer distances and fixing the problems so I can try and make it a 10 second street car. No A frames or trailers needed  ;D

Well, since my little brother bought a slightly Frankensteined little '74 standard a few weeks back, my dad and I have been working on getting it ready for life in Chicago as his only car, so we saw fit to do some junkyarding for the harder-to-find parts.

Here are four of the bugs we found, the fifth wasn't worth getting anything off of.

Once we'd gotten our little stash of parts together, we hid them and took a little walk around the yard to admire some of the scrap. This is one of the last really old-school junkyards around, and there are cars in here older than my grandparents. This Edsel, for instance, has been in here since both my parents were in diapers.

Eventually though, the heat got to us and we decided to get out of there, having some beer outside an abandoned house across the dirt road from the yard before finding a brewery with some food options.

So between the drive too and from the junkyard, the drive to Denver later that night, and the drive home yesterday, it ended up being a solid 200 mile weekend for my old warhorse. Hopefully y'all got out and did some fun stuff with your weekends!

Pretty cool Andrew.
WHere I live (London, UK) I dont think there are ANY old school scrap yards left... :-(

BTW I would definitely have grabbed that Edsel AND the Ford Fiesta MK1 in the row behind  :D
I bought my last Fiesta for £50 running on 3 cylinders, a £15 rocker shaft from the scrappy and I had a daily for the next 2 years!!

Oh trust me, if I had any real money/space, that Edsel would be coming home with me ASAP. People over on FaceSuck keep saying I'd be better off finding one with a grille and a windshield, but as far as I'm concerned, any Edsel is a good enough Edsel to save.
