The tires are 145/80s in the front and 165/80 in the back (both Firestone 560s). With 205s in the back my small engine wouldn´t make a move  ::)

This is my lil racer, warming thinks up prior to a mid 12 second pass at Santa Pod ;D

These are some pictures of my first VW Bug, it's also my very first car! Not a bad way to start do you think?  ;D

The car is from januari 1964.

It's now @ the local garage. They will put another 1200cc engine in it, and make the whole car 12v. They also put Flat4 BRM's on it. I want to make it Old school cal look. The front will be lowered with dropped spindels. Rear wil be stock, only bigger tyres, 195/65/15.

Only 195/65 tires are a little bit small, I would choose for 205/65 or 205/70 on a 5,5J rim.
If you still want the 195/65 tires, I have 2 tires if you intressed. There Firestone offcourse!

Nice car IDA48, but it´s a 65 model I think. Or a body swap.

Here is my '69 razoredge Ghia on Gasburners. The 1776 cc engine is gone and the car is waiting for its 2276 with IDAs.

Here's my 55 polar silver oval, rancho pro street, narrowed front beam, 2 liter engine with 48 IDF. It's in original condition, unrestored. After the car was finished, I've been keeping a wide smile on my face every time I'm sitting behind the steering wheel and push down my right foot!

Cal Parts and Blue streaks - A man after my own heart  ;D ;D by the way how much did you have to narrow the beam to them under the front wings?

Yes Fredrik's old car. It has a standard 1600 at the moment - got the car without the 1835. I've bought a new SCAT longblock 2332 - but I'm not sure if this will go into my -56 or my -67.

That black '67 could be the best example of Cal Look VW ever built. If it was mine, the only thing I would do is put a 010 or a magneto in it. Cheers to the owner/builder- what a great car.

Those lookers are pure porn!! I think you are right Zach, the black is in a class of its own.... due to style... and not cash!! Even thou I imagine it has soaked up a fair bit of that to! Had it been in any other colour I would have painted the headlights to, but in black this is A++.

Painting the Sprintstars black on the gray one makes a bold statement, and I really like it!

Gotta love those two lookers - black is the new bling!

The engine has been dry built , but I am waiting for the Udo Becker lifters ( coming soon )

When finished , I will run it on the rolling road , I am hoping to get 220-225 HP from it .

220+ hp is pretty neat! Are you using the CNC version as a base and add a little fluff`n buff? And which springs have you used?

I am using the CNC version , and am aware that they do not flow as well as they should out of the box , so I have done a lot of chamber and port matching work , which will improve things hopefully .

The heads came with the CB springs , I may go up to K-motions , but may run the CB springs to start with . I have found that the valve seats settle a lot after some use , so we will be having the heads off after some run time , and assessing the situation .

It should be a Ripper for sure .

Yes there is for sure some discussions going on the flow # of those CE heads, 270 something according to the homepage is far from the truth.

Have you used the special split Scat #1 bearing with the flange crank? Will the engine be used on the street?

Oh yes , all our cars are street , that's what Cal-Look is about , no race cars please .

The bearings have come from VW Speedshop , I think they are BugPack ones , I have used them before with no problems .

Wow, a flange crank in a street engine - how cool is that!! And this is not even the first one if I understand you correctly? Does the bearing cope well with the extra wear?

Hmmmm, maybe I will try a flange crank instead of a wedged one on my next engine  :)

I have one other customer running one on the street , and Paul Hamilton at VWSpeedshop , has one in his 12.5 second Bay window panel , that he drives 100 miles to York raceway , runs mid 12's all day , then drives home .

I think the trick is to not hang about at all on the clutch , shift as quick as possible to minimise wear on the thrust surface .

We only go over to the flange cranks , for M&H treads or slicks .

It's coming in to the workshop very shortly , I had hoped to be into it by now , but the work is stacked up against me , fortunately I have a friend helping me now , so we can gradually catch up .

I'll post pic's as it goes .

It has a stock 1500 at the moment , but is having the 1835 motor out of the Coral 54 Rag , when his new 2276 IDA motor goes in . I am waiting for the gearbox for the Coral rag , before I can do that , so it's holding things up a little , but we have plenty of other work to do .

Soooo easy to say - so hard to do  :)

Ok you have lost me you do not know what make are the bearings. I think they are BugPack because you have used them before. If i was to take $5000+ for a motor that i was putting together for someone. They would get a list of all the parts used  lets see (what bearings do i have in my motor). (Dont know but they are ok i have used them before) ok can i have my money back now. ???

I stand by everything I build , and our cars get driven all the time .

 I get my parts from the guy with the quickest Beetle and van in Europe , so if he supplies me some bearings and says they are good , I use them , I did before , and the car they were in got raced  , a lot , and driven on the road a lot , when the engine was taken apart for new heads and a freshen up , the bearings were fine .

And when my friend , that has the bearings , gets his car back , finished after a £ 40 K plus rebuild , he will get a list of everything in the car , what make everything is  , down to the last nut and bolt .

So far this forum has been a friendly place , try not to ruin it eh  ;)

I ask this question because also own a sprintkit in my 61 but over a 1200cc but I don't make any preparation engine - > stock just a empi oil pump with filter and empi oil sump

I build most of the motors , but H67 has had his built by Paul Bate , who is a member on here , and another prospect member has had his engine built by someone else . The club is not exclusive to my engines , it's just that when we started the club , I had built all the engines .

The blue 67 will be having a fairly mild 1835cc motor in it , we made the quarter mile time cut off 15.99 secs , to give the smaller engined cars the ability to get in the club .

 I 've used this Sprintkit for 20 years daily driver..

 Got it from the local Austin Mini garage in bangkok, brandnew with instruction manual..

 This kit came with 1500 adapter but didn't have the oil cooler..

 From the past ,inside the engine is stock 1600cc..

 It's OK for 1600 w/dual stromberg carb ,equal to dual 34 ICT..

 Now ,I've prepared ported & polished heads with 39mm. intake,32mm. exaust..

 H/D single valve spring, chromoly retainer..

 German lifter, chromoly pushrod..

 Balanced stock flywheel & crankshaft..

 H/D oil pump w/ oil filter , I don't have oil sump,but use windage tray..   

 This engine is fine , good respond from 2000-6000 rpm..

 But that I've told before, the idle is too high (14-1500rpm)..

 Maybe I 've change the cam to W100 , because I plan to install the air condition unit next year..

 I 'm very impressive with your sprintkit topic , I love this kit..

For me the engine could be a "black box". I don't care what is inside the engine as long as it does what it is supposed to do.

BTW, I have one of the fastest N/A cal-lookers  in europe and I have no clue what brand the bearings are! And yes, flanged cranks works on the street as long as you don't have the clutch down in traffic lights. Just have it in neutral until it is green.

...and keep the forum friendly. Isn't that what the hobby is about? Having fun!

Jesse, I think they did a pretty good job too, but Stephan took almost 600 photos of the car, and I think Street VW (Vol #53) used more of the detailed shots.

Rick - That is a Competition Engineering carbon fiber housing with a Porsche 993 fan and alternator.  It is the only housing I found that would fit the larger fan, both width wise as well as depth (it's a 115 amp alt with it's own cooling fan on the back side).

Nice rides people... My first bug was going to become a cal-look but a blond bimbo turned it into a pice of crap... My new one '69 bug (it is a cheepest version wchich has been made since '67 til '70 something - no fuel gauge, no chrome trim on the hood only VW emblem, 6V :D maybe any of you know how it is called... I heard that something like schpere kafer... sorry for selling). It is on a good way to became a cal-look... he has T-bars allredy :) and a twin dellorto engine (1600ccm for start...). I just realised that I haven’t sent in my looker... or should I call it something else?
I bought it in 2001 as a stock 64 1200, and mounted a Sway away front beam from Mags. Late that year I bought a set of burners a stuck them on. The 1200 gave up one day, and in vent the 1600 from my bus. It sat there for three weeks before a well used 1915 took its place. It did 10.5 at the 201. By then the drag racing bug had bit me and I bought a 2176 with IDA's. After my first ever engine rebuild it delivered 183,5 horses on 6000, it resulted in a 13.6 at the 402. I had terrible problems with carb vibration so I never got out the “potential” of my parts. But it ate 1300S boxes for lunch so a fully "built" Graffeo gearbox was ordered with 3.88 R/P 4.11, 2.46, 1.65, 1.26, and a swing ZF for good measure. With this box I managed a 13.5 before the engine case cracked the oil gallery. I then started a full restoration of the car, and the engine gets new heads and a new case. I hope to have the car in paint around Christmas… and at the street next summer.

that old '67 of yours, did it have beard seats, trimmed in tan leather & plaid centres, and an empi GT woodrim and oatmeal square weave carpets???

in an old Volksworld from around 10 years ago there were a couple of shots......i always regard that as one of the nicest interiors i've seen.  (apart from mine ;))

It is registered as a 65 but it is a 66.  It must be a real early 66.  It has ball joints but no hazzards.  Back when I got it I bought the 5 spokes and put new tyres all the way around.  The guy at the store talked me out of the 205/70R15s.... said they would never fit and he had bugs before, no internet back then.  So I went with the smaller ones.  :'(  Oh well live and learn.  I know the the engine would like the 70R15s better with the 4.37.  I will get them someday.

Lucas shouldn't be to hard to find even in France. Go to places that restore british cars. They were used on several cars as turn signals tail lights etc. I know they were used on Austin Healys.

It had an mot when I bought it & ran ok but mechanicaly it was pretty hammered!
The original engine had been lost and the front beam was badly narrowed so it could run 18" golf pattern wheels.
Its also lost the italian steering wheel, gauges and empi shifter along with the smoothed rear bumper.
Body is not too bad - theres some minor damage the rear end & front panel / wheel well.
Its had some welding along the channel closing plates & rear inner wings.
On the upside theres no gutter rot at all & the original interior is all there - even down to the period sterio!

I`m working on `Fast Company` right now, the ex Keith Seume / Custom Car project fastback which is jointly owned by myself & Russell, as soon as thats done I intend getting stuck into it!

Yep, its going back to december `85 spec - I`ve been saving the mags for 21 years for referance!
Fast company will be in guise no1 - straight orange, propped deck lid with hot 1776 & hopefully orange stripey interior - struggling with the material though!
Wanted that car since it appeared on the cover of custom car in july `87 - always hated the graphic`ed period though!
Got some current bug pics but they`re too big to post here - the fasty`s not a pretty sight right now!

Nice looking car javabug! You really should rub the paint out on that thing- it would make a HUGE difference! I use 3M polishing compound, and a lot of polishing cloths ;) Here is a before and after pic of my GTV.

Hey thanks Zach.  I'd love to polish it up a bit, but it isn't original paint and actually has quite a "texture" to it that would most likely just catch the compund and make a mess out of things.  At least on the hood and roof, etc.

the GT wheel was sold at the show to some dude whom no-one knew.....i was hoping to buy it, but didn't sell enough crap.

Cool - as long it's gone to a good home, long story: but it was a special wheel as it was originally sold to help pay for the restoration of someones Type 2 after they had passed away. Sorry, don't want to be morbid... I'm sure the new owner loves it.

Its a '71 1200, I have owned it for a long time.

Currently I am building a mild 2110 for it, I will also be fitting a different set of wheels. I am just waiting for some repairs to the paint to be done before I fit up the doors and add the trim.

Barring any disasters it will be finished for next year and will make it to European Bug In.

I like that late model!  Once it has an engine and sits just right, it will be very tasty.  I like the 2-liter Fuchs, too.  Not sure what else would suit the car well.  Maybe American Racing 4-spoke GT wheels.  Ooh, yes with gold centers.

Thanks for the compliments, I have a set of Mahle 'baby gasburners' to go on, I still have some polishing work to do before they get detailed.

To be honest I would love a set of genuine Empi 8's but when I was lookiing I couldn't find any. The stories of cracked wheels exploding are quite frightening as well.

My Mahles are nice and light so I am happy to run those especially as I have a lot of parts that need to be bought still so money is a bit tight.

I was coming home from beach buggin at sunny portsmouth and dropped a cam follower (i think) havent had time to take a closer look yet.
It took 5 hours for the AA to collect me and get me home with two kids in the car as well. I think it was all of 25 miles to my house from where I broke down, could have pushed it home quicker. ::)

Its a nice clean car and nearly as I have always wanted, still a few thing i would like to change, but I've had it 20 years next 14th Feb so it a real love bug ;D

Volksworld even left a card on the windscreen at EBI asking if I would like a feature on my car so it can't be too bad. I called back and spoke to them but they hav'nt got back to me yet, they must have loads of cars in the pipeline

As for the axles, yep short axles on the back with early 6" fuchs and a 10mm spacer get the wheel to clear the spring plate 8)

Short axles are the way to Go on all early cars even on a 67, the 67's with long axles, the tire sits out to far and you can see the edge of the tread with the bigger rear tires everyone runs these days. I like the Wheels Tucked in the Fenders, but not to much, I would never use more then a 2 inch narrower front Beam either.   IRS cars seem to be a little narrower in the rear then the 67 and 68 long axle cars.

A few in the works, a few of us on holiday, a few of us with other commitments and so on. We normally have a big turn out for it too, I don't think the crap weather on the Saturday helped either. There's always next year  ;D

Front beam is a CB performance  2” narrowed beam to allow for the dropped spindles and disc brakes . We replaced the adjusters and re- welded the beam as the factory welding was shocking. You could almost open it up with a screw driver.

I must say though that it rides real nice with their shortened leaves I think they have less temper in them to allow for their shortness. Also I’m running dropped spindles which also helps.

Its on the road now but I'm planning on redoing a few things over the winter  :-\
Still to do , the rag top , final interior , re-do the front end (binning the narrowed beam and 6js in favour of some 4.5s) , ditch the solid mount set up on the 901 (i cant hear myself think) and invest in a custom mounted neoprene  set up and most important of all ditch the 90.5 b&ps and 041 heads on my 2007 and step it up to some 94s with some cnc 044s and a pair of my own 48s  ;D

i'd say perhaps you need a thin spacer on the rear, or it may be just the angle of the photo...

and, i'm finally gonna ask it but, where i can i get those smooth running boards? they're are very nice touch to the whole look  8)

I agree about the rear spacer , Ive narrowed the IRS an inch each side to get the wheels in but your right they do need to come out a bit .
The running boards are basic OEM units its just the photo making them look smooth , but that is a good look , might have to investigate smooth board options :-\.

Here's mine, a little tired from all the driving in the past.  The engine is fresh, but the car has over 450K miles on it.  Just keepin' it tucked in the garage during the summer.  It's been up to 110F or more for over 29 days this summer.

I didn't like the center caps that came with the 5 spokes (plastic bullets). They were sand-cast by a friend (Geoff Peterson) in the club and then another club member cleaned them up on a lathe for me. The cast was taken off a sprint star cap.

Nice looking car.  Just curious, what's the deal with the driver's window down at the race?  Does your local track allow that?  We always have to run with the windows up, even when it feels like 120 degrees out! :o :P

Thanks, The window is up - I guess I cleaned it really well for the show weekend. Normally it covered in finger prints. At Mission on street legal nights they let you get away with jeans and a t-shirt, you have to have a helmet for convertibles and cloth sunroofs. When we started going to the track you had to wear longs sleeves and jeans, but I think they let up on the regulation when it got hot.

I had such a hardon for this car.  Fuchs and a 2 liter would have made it.  Who would have thought that roach from Oakland (still get chills when I think about what that neighborhood looked like) would have really been such a nice piece under the grime.

It runs a 2110, with 40 DRLAs, to try to get reasonable fuel economy so I can drive it to some European shows next year, its not 'run in' yet so I don't know how much power it has but it is good fun to drive, even though I am going easy on it.

Any thoughts on the stance, I am not sure whether the back needs to come down a touch or if I need fatter tyres, I have 165s at the moment. Can anyone reccommend a bigger tyre size that won't stick out of the arches with long axles 8)

Car looks great!  Maybe a 185 or 195 on the rear.  I'm starting to think the 205s and up are too large.

What's the story on the mufflers?  Look like modern QPs...?

I think I ran tall 195's on long axles OK but that was a while back so don't blame me when you're rolling your wings/fenders out!  We're putting 205's on a late car and will be using short axles as whatever it was I had was close. The last tyre I ran on it was a 185/65 and they didn't look right in the arch which I think is the problem with yours, more tyre height wise would be better probably.

Good looking car, Andy!  The tire game is always a pain in the ass.  I'd try some 195/70's or 65's.  Mike makes a good point for street cars with mid sized motors...too much tire makes for sluggish acceleration.  Big horespower can make use of the taller tires.  Good luck!

That's a god point, whatever it was I had before the 185/65's made the car lifeless with the stock motor it had which is why we put the 65's on but a 195/70 would probably be OK, a 205 is maybe too much though?

165 at the rear is a typical old school combo, but I also prefer when the wheelarches are 'filled'.
For me, the ideal size at the back with long axles is 185/80/15. It's tall, not too wide, and looks a bit 'classier' than a 205/70/15.
The thread patterns are usually older designs, so they suit a cal-look car better than the more modern /70 or /65 profiles.
Whatever you do, don't lower the back  ;)

Playing around with a 'tyre size calculator' a 195/65 or 185/70 are close to the diameter of the 165 so I could get a fatter look without altering the gearing. A 185/80 is 1.2 inches larger in diameter and according to the calculator would 'affect my speedo by 5%' so I presume it would also affect the gearing similarly. I think I may experiment with some scrap tyres to see how they look.

Javabug, the mufflers are stainless steel, I bought them from VWSpeedshop in the UK, they are only available as a kit which isn't a bad thing as I could weld them to get a close fit to the bodywork and also make them work with the merged header I have 8)

Here is mine.  66 deluxe restored 10 years ago and just swapt some engines and drove it!  VDO period gauge setup, geniune 4,5 and deep 6 inch fuchs alloys, 1914cc engine (still want to put italian IDA's on it), Convertable decklid, GTV steeringwheel was a weddinggift from my wife!

I assume Carlos is running a merged one.
Mine is a non-merged bugpack that I cut and rewelded at the right angle.

Well, when I say mine, it's actually Roland's, as is the 'loan' engine (1600dp) - thanks man! ;)

Carlos is clearly running a Gene Berg Dual QP.
It sticks out a bit more and curves back nicely underneath the fenders.

Not to step on any toes.. I have seen the previous discussion on the subject. BUT, do you guys not see this as a tribute/pay respect to the cars/club?
whenever I see a fake sticker like that I don't assume the driver pretends to be a member, but rather showing him self as a fan...
I'm not saying anything on right/wrong, but you guys seem very fast to stamp them as very disrespectful. Would you even consider the "why" before you judge?

Going to the car museum was one of the best days I'd had in awhile...

I have a problem with fake stickers...ones that are stuck on the outside of the windows, the wrong shade of blue, mis-spelled words, etc.  If you feel the need to display DKP's decals in your car, at least make it an original.  More importantly, make sure your car looks and runs to our club's standards.

Sorry Sarge but I don't share your fair view on this one . It takes a lot of hard work to set up a club such as yours and the fact that someone is prepared to rip off your stickers stinks , let alone stick them in a car which has not gone though your club entrance procedures , Those stickers on a car ( in my view ) show one of the highest accolade's that may in the scene would aspire to .  8)
No one should display any club log's in there car without themselves or the car being a official member of said club.
I can see that some may see this as faltering to that club , but it still don't sit right with me  >:(

If you want to stick a log of a cool club ( in your eye's) in your car join one , or even better start your own :)

for what its worth...i kinda agree with Trond.D,  and whether you approve of it or not, it seems to me that the people that put those stickers in their cars do so with the best  intentions.....to give the appearance of a true cal look car, (is any car in France, UK,or  Belgium in 2007 a real cal-looker?......discuss. :D)

Disagree! BUT, that said - it could definately do with a harder look which is quite difficult with that colour. Bigger rear tires or get the wheels further out would help and with a little practice I`m sure Torgeir can park his car a little better before the blitz starts flashing  ;)

I bought the car in 1996 thru Michael Hess and Dave Orozco from Jim Mayo!

since then i sold it once in 99 and got it back 2002, the car was built up in the early 90's in Northern California.

It's a 64 Sunroof US Spec Body on a 66 Balljoint Pan, the gearbox is a Long Ratio Freeway Flyer :-) Cruises Lovley!

I still have the 1500Singleport in it with a Holly Bugspray and Four-Tuned Exhaust header.. the plan is to fit my 1750cc (69X90mm Alu Nikasil Cylinders) with a set of EMPI 40PII Carbs... hmmmm Time Time Time... eventually i'll get around to doing it...

September '67-built '68 model, rebuilt to look like a proper '67! Now with T-bars instead of bumpers, 4.5" chrome 4-bolt sprints up front and Flat 4 BRMS at the back, and a serious case of laquer peel... >:( Got my old 1584 with 36 DRLAs in it at the moment, but should become home to my 12-second 2007cc motor at some time!

ok jim no probs my 5 spokes have some cracks  :'( :'( , but for me the moment they don't move (cracks)
but the next step is fixing the torquer on the car for a better driving pleasure , for me 5 spokes  are  some crystal wheels too fragile  :-\

Jim, if we saw more 5-spokes that were not polished, I would not complain.  Jay's 65 has the black ones, they work for me.  Some more silver ones would be good, too!

Sorry Fabs, I am not following you. I think your asking is the right side higher. I am thinking the right side sits a little higher since it looks like the wheel has more camber. I have the same problem on the '67 but I figure it evens out when my fat ass is in the driver's seat.  ;D

No, I think it is about right. The original Cal-lookers had stock rear ride height. Take a look at Deano's '67 in KS's book. You can see a lot of space between the rear fender and the tire. You might even think of bringing the nose down about half an inch. If you bring the back down and not the front it will look like the front has to much gap.

Me, I like the gaps between the tires to be almost even front to back and I like it to just frame the tire. Then all the rake your getting is from the tires.

i think it had a 356 engine in it and the late Bob Scott originally built it! it was done way back in the days, don't know if it was soo early that i would have been at bugins but this car has been around for long long time

very cool! i saw the car at the T3D open day last year and i like the car and colour very much. but i can't really appreciate the nipple turnsignals, i would have left them off, but this one is done like this many moons ago, so it would be 'wrong'. this car was at the bug in in the early 80's.

Well, my sons car is pretty much done for now.  It could be MUCH better, but its going to be his daily driver (he's 16) and if its TOO nice I'm afraid someone is going to want it more than we do...  I was around DKK when I was 16 (and on) and could only wish my first car looked like this.  Did I over do it?  He is definately stoked tho.
Suggestions?  I have'nt built a VW in over 25 years......... 

Nice car! Good to see that you have 3 point restraint seat belts in the car. I would probably put locking lug nuts on the rims tho.

And yes, I have installed locking lugs on the alloys, hope a pair of vise grips doesnt make me think I wasted my money.  I was thinking about a hidden kill switch or two but had yet to wire it up.  Next up is the headliner (its pretty much shot) then eventually some better seat covers.  The ones on there now are old school plaid and red vinyl from the 80's and they are starting to show their age.  Its a shame.  Thanks again, Morgan has his permit and will be soloing soon.   UH !

 i know,  it really isn't the year of make we all like but with its body mods and super condition its although worth having this 72 Typ 3
in our club. Its lowered by a Typ 1 beam in the front and 2 splines in the back. It has a 1641cc turboengine from ,, lowbugget.com and 4 lug BRMs on it. It has original 17550 km out of first hand and belongs to longtime clubmember Akky G.
I will post more pics in near future of other clubmembercars

the green one is one out of my own collection...........

I had these locks for my Cookies where the hex part would screw on and off like a regular lug. Under that was like a threaded convexed washer. In the washer, there were a series of random holes. The key had a hex with pins located to match the holes in the washer. Not much to get a set of vise grips on.

Also there's a kill switch that I think is called "Stop Action" Don't know if they're still available. If they're not turned off, they allow the car to run for a certain amount of time... then it kills the motor. The idea is that the thief hot wires the car and thinks he's in the clear then the car shuts down in the middle of the street and can't be refired.

Is that 130 pcd there pingo ? Are you running discs up front there buddy ? As i thought there were clearance problems with discs and blister erco's ?

yes man that wheels are 130mm porshe pattern and yes disk brakes its not compatible with the buble ercos,but i have disk brakes in front and i will make an 5/8 billet spacer and sway away long studs 60mm and thats the solution......
