Title: UK aircooled VW drag weekend 8th/9th July, with street car shoot out
Post by: richie on January 05, 2017, 12:49:33 pm
As the guys that run the UK Cal look drag day have got dates confirmed for this year for 8th & 9th July at Shakespeare county raceway we are planning on running the Street car shoot out we hoped to have last year before loosing track dates.

So going on the basic things I took from the previous discussion this is the provisional idea.

There will be a approximate 25mile cruise around the local area to show the streetablity of all cars [and have some fun ;) ]  planned for Saturday late afternoon/early evening and the format for racing will be based around 2 different classes:

" Actual street" & "Modified street", with them both then split into N/A and power adder groups for quickest in each.

The plan is the "Actual street" class will be run exactly as you drive it on cruise and will be street legal at track as well, so pump fuel, mufflers, treaded tyres, fan belt on etc, working lights, indicators, horn and wipers required, and will not allow burnouts, the idea is so cars are just the same as if you pulled up to a stoplight on street ;)

"Modified Street" will allow you to swap parts after cruise, slicks, stingers and race fuel allowed ;D

So if you are interested please reply on here so we can get an idea of possible numbers, and at this time we welcome any input to the rules etc so tell us your thoughts & ideas :)

cheers Richie

Hi Richie,

I would like you to put me down for this, 2 things are preventing me at the moment:
1. I need to finish my car - working on it most evenings to get it running - I have the determination to make it in time
2. Its my wife's birthday weekend - this may take more work than the car (which is a lot!)

I'm going to attend.
1 question, why no burnout allowed in the actual street class? Surely some heat in tyres is a safety thing?

Lee

Lee,

1st, good you will attend :)

as its supposed to be "actual street" class and run just like car is on cruise and burnouts are not legal on street it seems to fit more, also I don't think adding heat in a normal street radial tyre by doing a burnout is a safety thing no, tyre manufactures didn't design them that way did they? .

Next people will be wanting slicks as its a safety thing etc etc, got to draw the line somewhere :) The class is aimed more at those that never usually race there cars, and most likely will drive them their and home, this should also help save a few gearboxes maybe :o
cheers Richie

I am planning to be there,
'Actual Street' sounds good to me as I usually drive my bug to the strip, run it and then drive it home.

All fair points :) looking forward to it now. Got a few changes planned for the car this year to chase Harvey down. Thank you to all who are organising.

Baz, I reckon I mst have more work to do than you, you should post a picture up, maybe there could be a prize for the person that has built a car and got it running to be there in the shortest amount of time😄

What, burnouts are not legal? Upps... ;)
I would not ristrict it, with street tires you would slow the e/t's. So personal taste.
But it's always a nice show for those who are not that fast, but like a bit fun...
Other rules and idea i find perfect!
I must look when my holiday slot will be, would love to go to gb for some good fun and nice people.

"Actual Street" rules sound like the best compromise set-up I've heard personally in a long time.

Have fun!

This gives me something to aim for too. Actual street, no burnout to try to save a stock gearbox! I'll be using the 2007cc motor that ran 12:50's in Headstraight in my full weight Beetle. Maybe run low 14's?

The 'actual street car shoot out' is really cool and deffo my thing!

Great to see you organising this Richie.
Once my car is actually driving - hopefully in a few months - even if it will only be N/A - I'll want to sign up for this 4sure!

Is it a problem if the car is not really cal-look?

You'll get to meet my new crew man - he doesn't know much about cars, has only been walking a fortnight and can't really follow instructions, but if I train him up right he'll be able to get those small hands down the back of a hot engine with little regard for his own safety...

I had to give a wry smile when I read the Practical Classics article on Cal-Look, they referred to passenger grab handle on a hot VW as the "FM handle".

I can live with having the seat in.....but running around Stratford with Sian in is a no no....i get punched in the leg..arm...ribs...as soon as I hit the go pedal...think I will develop a you need to sit here with the van and look after stuff excuse by July....
That or bag a willing passenger before then.....

Ooh, tough one! My wife has booked a campsite around Stratford upon Avon so her and her sister and the kids will spend the day pottering around the area on Saturday then Wellesbourne market on Sunday. I'll go and join them for tea on Saturday and back to the track on Sunday morning. I think my niece wants to do the Saturday cruise though!

Any EU legal treaded tyre so yes DOTs and drag radials allowed as they are legal tyres in plenty of European countries, the no burnout rule will stop them having to much advantage

do you have to use real Radial tyres in the "actual street" class or are M/H dots allowed?

Any EU legal treaded tyre so yes DOTs and drag radials allowed as they are legal tyres in plenty of European countries, the no burnout rule will stop them having to much advantage

cheers Richie
And you would have to do the 25 mile street cruise with those DOT's then right?

what will be happening on each day? Its my wifes birthday on the Saturday and she would prefer me to go on the sunday, I would prefer to go for both days!

Saturday will be open RWYB, so anyone wanting to run street class but try belt off/burnout/slicks/stinger etc can do so on Saturday as it wont count toward actual times, just need to be there in plenty of time to do cruise sat evening
Sunday will be time trails, open rwyb and also I think we are going to have a quick 8 for race cars sunday afternoon[ qualifying sunday morning] and possibly quick 8 for other groups as well if enough interest

cheers Richie

I will get one of the organisers to confirm, but I am sure you can get advanced tickets and maybe cheaper that way, but you can turn up and just pay on gate as well

Re: Ticketing folks, we don't actually get involved with ticket sales, we just organise the fun for y'all - tickets can only be bought direct from Shakey on their website, or  by calling them. They can of course be bought on the gate as well.

Sat Gate £12 per person - Advance £10 per person - Sun Gate £12 per person - Advance £10 - Weekend £22 per person - Advance £20.00

Racers: Track fee is £25 per day or £40 for a weekend of unlimited runs.

Shakey's rules, copied from their website:

TEN ITEM CHECK LIST

1. It is now a requirement of Shakespeare County Raceway that you MUST wear a crash helmet for drag racing at all events in 2015. This includes Public Track Days and Lifestyle Events.

2. Bring your drivers licence for signing on. Provisional licences (car or motorcycle) will NOT be accepted. - NO LICENCE NO RACE!

3. Wear suitable clothing that covers your arms and legs when racing. Gloves are required if you are driving an open top car. See Download's page ref: 'Car Safety' for further clarification.

4. Windows must be closed when racing.

5. Seat Belts must be worn.

6. Motorcycle riders to wear leathers, gloves, appropriate motorcycle approved boots and helmet (jeans & trainers not permitted). See Download's page ref: 'Motorcycle Safety' for further clarification.

7. Intercooler spray bars not to be used. The track policy is perfectly clear on this, any car dropping fluids will NOT be allowed to race!

8. Make sure that your motorcycle is clean and not dropping oil.

9. All motorcycles must have an adequate manufacturers or after market chain guard. Also oil & water catch cans if required.

10. Shakespeare County Raceway reserves the right to define additional rules governing the running of the event and will advise all registered entrants accordingly. Track managements decision is final in any situation or dispute.

Had a look at what you've been working on while I was dropping the car to Jim ;)

Jims done his bit now,  should be home Friday. Chasing heads and other engine bits that should be done by now.

It'll not look pretty by July but should move under its own power.

I am still plugging away at my car, every night I am putting in 1-2hrs but it seems like everything is against me.
I have no idea when it was last on the road but it was only supposed to need a little bit of metal work - nearly a year later I am still welding and cutting!
If I pull it off and the oval will be there I will not win any awards for what it looks like and I will of had no seat time in it!
The problem I have had, apart from buying an incomplete car is that too much of my time has been taken up on my pillar drill after reading through the weight saving thread ;D

Good idea, I've never really liked the idea of the lowback seats with a 4 point hardness, but at the same time, I don't want to weld seat mounts into my bug, so today I made a compromise. I know its not perfect but its mine haha

For the street car shootout I am thinking that instead of doing a actual race ladder sunday afternoon that we will take an average for everyones best 3 passes on sunday, this will allow anyone who needs to leave earlier to get a ferry or has long drive home to still have a chance of winning  8).
So requirements would be

Complete cruise Saturday evening[approx. 6.15pm leaving from outside front of track for this] and then do as many passes on sunday as you want but just hand in your tickets for your best 3 passes on sunday.

There will be 4 categories
Real street naturally aspirated
Real street with power adders[any]
Modified street naturally aspirated
Modified street power adders

I did think about a bus category but as there doesn't seem to have been any interest from bus owners guessing its not needed?

At this time please voice your thoughts or opinions, once I order the trophies its to late ;) ;D

Peach/Kaferboy maybe you can put this on your facebook page as well ?

cheers Richie

Not one for the street car shoot out , but im almost done , after a delay in getting heads back from the

Broen, if you can't stay at the track I know there are plenty of campsites and guesthouses close by. We've stopped at a couple of sites locally.

So real street is treads, two seats, no burn out, belt and the cruise

I take it there is no turbo or gas in this class ??

Yes, & the cruise is required for anyone running the street classes, "Modified and Real"

I take it there is no turbo or gas in this class ??

Each class has 2 categories, N/A and power adder so although allowed you won't be competing against it if you have a N/A car :)  You can still pair up and run against anyone you want to though

Yep I'm out too as it doesn't look like my trans is gona be back in time. Gutted.

I'm not even bothering with building a trans. I'm hoping that no burnout and 15 year old tyres will compensate for 160bhp and help the stock '67 box survive!

And my RAC membership is up to date...

Edit: to do list added

Find distributor, coil and leads, exhaust gaskets and header nuts. found all except leads, also found and fitted clutch - kind of important...
Fit exhaust and ignition to 2007cc motor. had to modify cylinder head tins AGAIN to fit spark plugs! Arse of a job when the rest of the tin is already fitted...
Empty four years worth of crap out of the car.
Finish cutting back the paint.
Get ready for first MOT since 2013.
Fix whatever caused it to fail the MOT - not expecting a first time pass!
Take to the workshop and swap 1500 for 2007.
Fit carbs (hope they clear bodywork).
Fit tacho and rev limiter if possible.there's a tach already in the car! Bonus! Arse, tach isn't connected!
Been working on the lights - now only missing one headlight, one main beam, one indicator, one brakelight, all on different corners!
Also annealed the copper exhaust gaskets to fit tomorrow. MOTis booked for 9am but going to have to cancel it - rain has washed out last night and all but an hour tonight and I'm working on the drive...

Got to get it done - father in law has booked tickets, bought a tent, got grandson for the weekend!

MOT rebooked for Monday morning, all lights work but need new indicator bulbs as they don't show orange any more. Going to treat it to new wiper blades while I'm at it. Need at least one 145 and probably both rear tyres too - think I've got some over the unit but they might end up being commercial tyres on the back, so they should save the gearbox... Spending the rest of the day making it look presentable! Think the clutch cable tube has broken free of the tunnel too.

:D now thats a good list!

I can beat the 2013 MOT, mines booked for the 7th at 10:30am and it will be the 1st one since 2009!  :D :-\

I've got front indicators and adjust rear bakes left. Possibly a bit more depending on how this week goes.

Keep pushing guys its going to be a good one  8) 8)

Drove my car over to my parents tonight for my dad to take it for MOT in the morning. Brakes are woefully bad, one hub gets hot so maybe a collapsed flexi pipe. Certainly need a front tyre changing so we'll just see what else it fails on. Then the 2007 can go in it and I don't have to worry about he slipping clutch on the 1500!

Failed MOT on three tyres,  one back brake not working at all and the other one a bit crap. And a "small patch" of welding. That'll be body mount on the drivers side and rear crossmember / heater channel end plate and battery tray on passenger side then...
Found the tyres, got the back brakes apart (new cylinders and flexis to buy tomorrow) and cut out most of the grot. Treated with rust killer so tomorrow is welding for me and brake building for dad. Re-MOT on Wednesday daytime, motor change Wednesday evening! Shake down on the way to school Thursday and Friday. What could possibly go wrong?

Drivers side welded and back brake rebuilt (cylinder, flexi and solid pipe!), passenger brake stripped and cleaned, floor virtually done, crossmember repair started, heater channel end plate repair to do. MOT now on Thursday! I'm hoping the 1500 can come out on Thursday night - I hate that thing!

Hi Keith, No Pit Passes required, you can drive right up to the strip and get out, there is a large field on the left-hand side after the main toilet block. Park there and you literally only have meters to walk  :)

MOT passed at 5:30!

Dad and I are over at the unit working on the 2007 - I'm setting valves and dad is dumpling valve covers for clearance. Header is on but motor is still on the bench.
About to call it a fail and just use the 1500 to get me to the track so at least ive got my car there. I don't want to pull the 1500 out and then not get the 2007 in and working and have to leave the car at home.

Just home, still with 1500. Carried on until just after 10pm and went to get the carbs and linkage. No carbs. Pair of 48IDFs missing. Eventually found them in a box in completely the wrong place at 10:50 by which time we were just looking to make sure they hadn't been stolen after our break in last year.
Brought car home, followed by dad, then had to get a lift back up to Wolverhampton to collect my daily driver!
I'll see you all later - I'll be the one asleep on the banking with a small boy shouting "car!" every time one goes down the strip!

I don't think so Eddie, it's only a public track weekend / RWYB that the VWs are taking over!  I'll ask Peach in a bit tho.

Had a great day today, met up with plenty of old friends, didn't see much racing due to small boy, but evening cruise was great fun! I haven't taken any photos but I know quite a few of the others did!

Ron and I had a great day – damn it was hot!

Good to put some names to faces. Congrats to all involved for what looked like a fun no-hassle weekend.

Love Danny's Notchback and would happily have taken it home with me! Sad not to see No Mercy make a pass, but not as sad as I am sure Russell and Richie were. It will be awesome once it's on track and I personally can't wait to see it in action.

Again, well done all, and thanks for making us feel welcome. My last trip down the strip at Avon Park (oops, showing my age...) was in 1997. 20 years ago - where did the time go?

Until next time...  8)

Start of the cruise for Street car shoot out, there were more cars who made it as well but these were only pictures we got so if anyone has pic of whole line up please share :)

Cruise went well, total distance was just over 28 miles through some great scenery in local villages, then few miles on open roads at 60-70mph,  and back through the town center,  the stop start traffic through Stratford on a Saturday evening was fun, throughout  the cruise we had an amazing amount of people waving, pointing & staring, cars flashing lights, even taking videos and pictures as we passed through which was cool  8)

Thanks to everyone that took part 8)

Nice vids richie.
It was me you gave the rocker cover gaskets to .....cheers for that . I'd wouldn't have made the racing  without  it.
It looked like there were some "official" type photographer's track side ?? They had high vis on anyway .........do they
host their pic's anywhere?  I'd have liked  a nice  pic of my car on track,I probably won't make back racing there before it becomes
a housing estate....... :'(
